This self-help manual lays out a path to inner peace and happiness. I’m a chronic overthinker; it wasn’t until I went through two significant periods of depression that I finally realised I was my own worst enemy and really needed to change. As Nicole Gauder explains, the human condition is prone to negativity, seeks it out in all situations, in every aspect of our lives. Positive thinking is a matter of choice.

Each chapter has useful advice and tips. For instance, the beliefs you hold about yourself need to be evaluated, are they toxic, holding you back? Also, the power of the imagination is a helpful tool; no matter what else is happening in your life, there is a sanctuary you can reach in your mind, can imagine yourself there, experience peace and happiness by association. Another example, is procrastination being a stress producer, whatever is preying on your mind, that needs done, don’t keep putting it off.

This stress-conquering guide will be useful to dip into, to re-read when I find myself slipping back into my old thought patterns. I recommend this book; it is concise, informative, encouraging, and most important of all – empowering.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This review is 100% my own opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I influenced by the publisher/author in any way.

Conquer Stress by Nicole Gauder is not the book you might expect from a spiritual adviser -there is real work being done here, not just general advice! Yes, she advocates the power of the mind and positive thinking, but what makes this book stand out to me is her writing prompts. Throughout the book, she explains what you need to know about a topic, but then follows up with questions that are meant to cut to the core of your inner thoughts. Sometimes, the answers you find might sting - your own reasons for holding yourself back. She always follows these with a series of questions that leads you, from one answer to the next, on a pathway to new thoughts. It is clear to me that she understands that just reading a book won’t solve your problems. You have to roll up your sleeves and do some digging yourself.

There is a lot of helpful and empowering advice in this book. She focuses on mindfulness but actually takes the time to explicitly explain the process of building this mentality. She addresses both sides of your thoughts, beliefs, and actions - the positive thoughts and the negative thoughts. As someone who has worked in health and wellness myself, acknowledging the difficulty of overcoming negative thoughts is a hallmark of an experienced practitioner. Only inexperienced practitioners tell you to just think positive thoughts and the universe will answer. Nicole’s 10+ years of experience shine through with her practical advice that focuses just as much as dealing with the negative as it does with increasing the positive.

The chapters are short and easy to digest. Sometimes, I would read an early chapter and wonder how you would actually do what she suggested. Be patient - she introduces ideas early to let you digest them. Later chapters then delve into them and guide you with her writing prompts.

Recommendation: this book, while advocating actionable steps, has a strong element of spirituality. If that does not speak to you, then this book is not for you. If you are looking for advice on conquering stress and the tools to make changes to your thoughts, then I absolutely recommend you not only read this, but follow her writing prompts. Her advice and writing prompts remind me of “The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem” by Nathaniel Branden. A key difference is, it took me weeks to work through his tome, while I was able to read her easy-to-digest book in a day.

A short but enlightening little book, Conquer Stress reminds readers that the mind is a powerful tool and our perception is something that is fully under our control. Whether or not you are happy is for you to decide, as happiness is a birthright for you to control. There are a variety of things you can do to take advantage of the powerful tool that the mind is, from guided imagery to reflecting on limiting beliefs and finding the solution that can be embedded in a problem.

I think that I would have liked the book less if it had not had those questionnaires and chapter reflections; the chapters by themselves would have sounded quite superficial and platitudinous to me. However, having those clear, relevant prompts and recurring chapter reflections made the concepts and techniques offered in this book seem more useful and applicable. These reflections and prompts helped me admire how powerful the mind is and how just passively moping about a problem instead of actually using it is like a deviation of your own freewill. I especially enjoyed identifying my own limiting beliefs. Long story short, the top two limiting beliefs I have are that 1) I am not accomplished enough and 2) Community/connection is overrated. I was also able to devise my own modified version of guided imagery to motivate me throughout the day to accomplish my goals in a stress-free manner.

For any potential readers, I would recommend giving this book a go... but only if you are willing to answer at least some of the prompts or pause for reflection. Introspection will only help augment the content in this book.

I really liked the book Conquer Stress by Nicole Gauder. She wrote such an interesting and helpful book for everyone to read. Anyone who is under stress or not should definitely read this book to get some helpful tidbits on how to conquer your stress! I loved the introduction where Nicole states that happiness is your birthright. This is such a true and poignant statement. In this book there are also parts of each chapter where you can reflect on what you read and also there are parts where you must answer some questions as you go. In a good self-help book, in my opinion, you need to do self-introspection and this book has many questions as you read in each chapter and also where you have spaces to write in the book or to grab a piece of paper. I felt great after reading through this book and doing each of the reflections and self-introspection questions each chapter. I highly recommend people who are feeling stressful in their lives to read Nicole’s book and hopefully like myself, you will feel better in no time!
