When tragedy strikes and team orders are called for, will Archie and Noah’s love survive the fallout?

Noah is devastated when his best friend is badly hurt in a fiery crash, and shocked when the team’s rookie steps up to take Augusto’s place. Not only is Archie inexperienced on the track, but he’s a threat to Noah’s heart when giving in to lust and passion could only end badly. Caught in the chaos of Formula 1, and despite being terrified of losing everything, Noah falls for Archie one passionate but secret moment at a time.

In his rookie F1 season as Deacon-Graaf’s reserve driver, Archie is called up to cover for an injured driver. He’s determined to earn a permanent place in a team, but for now he’s thrilled that he’s driving alongside his idol, Noah. Falling for his teammate is as simple as breathing, but their romance threatens to expose them to a media frenzy, leaving Archie facing a stark choice — love or career.

This M/M romance from RJ Scott features teammates, a secret affair, hurt/comfort, and is set in the high octane world of Formula 1 featuring fast cars, driving at the limit, spectacular crashes, heated rivalries, and of course, a HEA.

Each book in the Lights Out collection is a standalone story, and the books can be read in any order.

I loved reading a book set in the F1 racing world - I went into this book knowing absolutely nothing about it but this story made it easy for people who know nothing to understand what was going on. Some will say it had way too much of a focus on racing, but I actually sort of liked that I found it pretty interesting.

As for the romance, the pacing was pretty weird. When things aren't paced or built up in a believable way it sort of ruins the romance for me.

And like Sarah said, the last chapter of this book included a big spoiler for book 3 which was a bit odd for me. I have read a lot of multi-author series and they always do a good job at hinting at future books but this one dropped a big spoiler which is sort of weird?

This was a solid opener to this new multi author series set in the high octane world of Formula 1 racing.

It's not a sport I know much about, and I thought the balance was perfect between the technical aspects needed for the setting and the romance itself.

Noah peed me off for a lot of this book, though, and while there's UST and a couple of hot encounters between him and rookie Archie, the relationship element is serious slow burn.

It works, but I would have really liked to have seen more between them when they weren't just getting off or having a "fall-out" over either the racing or Noah's rejection of Archie each time he got frightened by his feelings.

We do get a lovely epilogue seven years in the future, which was a really nice way to show how they'd moved on together.

As this is a multi author series that occurs concurrently, there's also hints and snippets of stuff going on in the background that I found fascinating and definitely added to my anticipation for the other stories.

RJ writes a sweet relationship development in the later part of the book, which made me really happy, and I loved the visit to Noah's family.

All in all, I enjoyed this opening romance a lot.

#ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review.

Always love a motorsports book, there don't seem to be that many and it's something I want more of - give me all the MM MotoGP, F1 and Motocross please!

I liked how there was a good amount of info on F1 if you've never watched and for me I think it was easy to understand - but then again I've been watching F1 since I was tiny and live really near to Silverstone so it's ingrained knowledge - maybe it doesn't make sense to newbies 😂😂

The relationship was interesting, although it took a long time to get going and the book ended more abruptly than I like - it felt like there was more to come but it just stopped! I'd also like to have seen more of them outside the racing season and also to see how they decided to go about things with the team etc. because it was just left very vague.

Definitely interested to read the rest of this series and even though they're classed as standalones, the characters from each book were featured, as well as events that relate to the storyline of each book. For me they're not truly standalone as they share crossover content and characters, so I'll be reading in publication order.

(2,5 stars) Team Orders, the first in the multiple authors' series centered around the racing world of Formula 1, was not an easy read for me. I didn't find it surprising, although initially I did hope to be proven wrong for once, but it is just the fact that this particular author's work doesn't work for me at all. Long time ago I gave up even trying to read the prolific hockey series they co-write with another author (who I suspect also doesn't quite work for me).

The only reason why I even started reading this story, and had to fight not to DNF on multiple occasions, was the fact that this was the first in the series, I was interested in exploring, because if this story was somewhere in the middle I would have skipped it entirely. Even tough the series is advertised as standalone stories that can be read in any order I don't think that is entirely true. Or at least it wasn't for this particular story where the characters and relationships from three other stories were referenced in passing (and even spoiled in one case).

Anyway, on to my half assed summary about the characters and the plot.

The story opens with Archie Harris, who fresh of his F2 championship win has just been invited to join the Deacon-Graaf F1 team as their reserve driver. The reserve driver (from my limited understanding of this story) is somebody who helps the team run the data on the cars' performances, drives practice laps with the drivers and in general helps discover issues and opportunities for the team to race better. (Excuse my obvious lack of knowledge about anything related to racing.) Archie's future is promising and he's not sweating anything except maybe his not so subtle crush on the team's number one driver, the veteran Noah Fournier. Noah, who happens to be tightly closeted bisexual (opposed to Archie's not as tightly closeted gay), is the one who immediately calls him out on it, advising Archie to be less obvious with his heart eyes and then can't help kissing Archie anyway, messing with Archie's head entirely.

When Noah's teammate Augusto crashes badly in one of the first races after Archie joining the team and ends up in a hospital in critical condition Archie is trust to take over his place as the team's second driver.

All through this turmoil Noah keeps blowing hot and cold when it comes to his attraction to Archie and that gets boring right away. Even worse, instead of acting like a mentor to Archie or at least getting some therapy to deal with his issues regarding Augusto's crash and potential danger to himself (in case it turns out there was a major flaw in their cars), he uses Archie as his personal waste disposal for dumping all his personal and team bullshit on him. Archie's offense on the other hand was his unwavering puppy-dog crush on Noah, even when Noah did very little to deserve his affection and when Archie himself deserved so much better. So... it's safe to conclude neither Noah nor Archie have managed to win me over with their personalities.

As for the romance, the progression of their relationship didn't feel organic at all, it was like one moment Noah was adamant about not getting involved with Archie, then the next they were in bed together every chance they got, and in love with each other envisioning their forever together.

It also felt like Noah's decision came out of nowhere. It was mentioned few times in passing but never as an actual consideration until the very end

Above was just one example of the major pacing issues in the story, because for more than half of the story we had to suffer through Noah's faffing about acting on his attraction to Archie or not, and then all the important conversations and major decisions about their respective futures were condensed in a single chapter at the very end of the story. Maybe if so much time wasn't wasted in the beginning on Noah's pointless indecisiveness there would have been more room left for the actual romance and less rushed ending.

Since I managed to push through the end of the story I will list below the references to other characters from other books in the series. (It might be just me, but this would be one of the things I'd look for in other reviews.)

Karl Neumann, the main character in Black Flagged, who is mentioned as uncharacteristically quiet during a media scrum in the beginning,

Lennox Bradley, the main character in Full Throttle, who also happens to be Archie's friend from their F2 days,

Robert Andilet, the main character in Rookie Mistakes, makes a few appearances in the story, being generally affable in his role of a veteran and the oldest driver on the circuit.

Mateo Llorente and Dean Williams, the main characters in Pole Position, are mentioned in the very beginning as and then on the last page of the last chapter the author drops a major spoiler for their relationship which I was so not okay with... (I'd read one connected multiple author's series before and in general the authors were quite good at not spoiling the plots of the other novels while still finding a way to tie into them in some way.)

Themes: dual POV, rookie/veteran, closeted character/s, F1 racing

2.5 stars. Not a strong opening for this highly anticipated multi-author F1 MM series. I just about died when I saw this was going to be a thing. I used to be wildly obsessed with F1, not so much these days, but I was so into it when I was younger. Part of my obsession was the glamour of it all, the travel, the mysterious inner workings of the teams. All of that. So this felt like something actually way overdue, I've never read an MM F1 book before. Imagine my delight.

This book, however, was not it. While I enjoyed the racing aspects a lot, the romance was terrible. We have Archie - an up-and-coming rookie, acting as reserve driver for a respected team, and Noah - a veteran in said team who Archie has been crushing on for years. These two have zero chemistry. Like absolutely none, the tension is so forced, they blow hot and cold and the relationship progression makes no sense at all. In fact, it takes them 70% of the book before anything real happens, and then the L word is like dropped in there at lightning speed, but I just wasn't buying it. Archie is such a bland character, and Noah was kind of a dick. I was not rooting for them and felt no relief when they finally got their acts together. It was also not really hot at all, there are some lacklustre sex scenes late in the game, but I was pretty bored by them.

The writing is choppy and inner-monologue heavy. It just wasn't an effortless read and I have to say that I am really disappointed. The upside is that the rest of this series is authored by other people, so hopefully it gets redeemed in the end.

I don't think I've ever read a book set in F1 racing before, and I have to say I'm impressed. Not only was it exciting and engaging, it was also sweet and heartwarming at the same time. I'm pretty excited to see what else this series will bring

Fresh new multi author series. I’ve never read about Formula 1 racing drivers so this was new and I enjoyed learning new things about motorsports. This had a solid start but the romance fell flat for me and the storyline in the second half seemed to be lacking. There was some things I had issues with, a big one being 2 fairly major spoilers for 2 of the other books in this series. Keen to check out the other stories by different authors.

I absolutely adored Archie, but Noah, well, he was a completely different story. Truthfully, he was a complete asshat for more than half of the story. His back and forth - hot and cold routine gave me whiplash.

Once Noah finally decided that he was ready to pull his head out of his ass and be with Archie, he was a completely different person. He was actually likable.

Archie and Noah had chemistry and they were hot together, but I wasn’t sure what kept Archie coming back after being pushed away over and over.

I liked the premise of the story, and while I’m a NASCAR fan, there was too much car talk in this book. I loved the actual racing scenes, they were action-packed and exciting, but the actual car talk, how it works and whatnot, was too much.

Still, this was an entertaining and enjoyable read.

I was waiting for this one, especially since none of the others had an update on Augusto.

Grumpy and Sunshine. Now that made me laugh, hard. I could have gone without 'oh the younger one is so awkward and obviously in love with the older one what with all the blushing, staring and being weird'. Archie thing could have been toned down a bit, as it's a little too obvious. Even with all the rumours later, it should have been obvious to anyone with two eyes and half a brain cell.

I guess I can attribute it to grief, but Noah got very weird all of a sudden after their first race together. And Archie could have been flustered because of what Karl Neumann told him just before the race - it's mentioned in Black Flagged but not at all mentioned here - where Karl basically comes out to Archie and Archie gets so flustered he crashes.

I do think Noah's mum is a bit too forceful about two of them coming out. It's easy to say you should, looking from an outside, but in their situation, I wouldn't have come out of the closet, either. I do like that there is hope for a more inclusive F1 in the future and out-and-proud LGBTQ+ drivers on the circuit.

Obviously, this series doesn't have an order cause most of the books are happening more or less at the same time, but I read this one last, and I'm glad I chose to do so. It was a good way to finish the series. I think the only book I liked more was Black Flagged, but Pole Position I liked just as much as this one.

I’ve been a huge F1 fan for many years, so I love reading books that are set in the sport but I’m also always a bit wary of them because if there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s when those books inaccurately portray the main aspects of the sport. There were one or two minor inaccuracies in this one but overall, it’s definitely a romance you can enjoy even if you are an active fan of the sport. I also enjoyed the romance in this one and am definitely interested in continuing this series at some point.

Yes, my opinion is 100% biased🤣. Not only is it an F1 book, but Noah and Archie reminded me so much of Sebchal (Sebastian & Charles). Their dynamic and relationship rather than the characters themselves lol.

I know it's been 4 years since they were teammates and 2 years since Sebastian retired from the sport, but I still miss them very much): (Especially Sebastian!!). We need another repeat of Suzuka 2023🥺.

Anyway, if it wasn't for that the book would've been a solid 2-3 stars because of the pacing. It was all over the place LMAO.

ALSO MALAYSIA 2013 I SEE YOU, the author really knows their shit and I love it 😝! Sebmark you'll always be famous :P

Team Orders is the first in an all-new multi-author m/m romance series (interconnected standalones) set in the high-octane world of Formula 1 Motorsport.

Yes *nods*, I know anything sports related is an anathema to me, but really, get a grip and stop that chuckling! *rolls eyes*

I’m embarrassed to admit it’s been forever and a day since I last read an R.J. Scott book *blushes* but I won’t be making that mistake again in a hurry…

Archie and Noah’s story sucked me in from the off, even if I did have to give myself a crash course (excuse the unintended pun) in motorsport terminology via the tinternet!

Can you imagine the pressure of starting your rookie season as a newly minted F1 reserve driver? Not only do you have to prove that you deserved the call up from F2, despite a winning season, but also hide an integral part of what makes you you. *snorts/mutters* Which is easier said than done when your teenage crush is now one of your fellow teammates/mentors.

*sighs* Why do I always want to mother characters like Archie? With his eyes projecting everything from hearts to hurt. He’s quintessential sunshine and I just wanna grab him for a hug!

I don’t know if it’s the Virgo in me, but I’ve been known to hold a grudge… (all will become clear.)

Noah’s middle name is Conflicted! It makes sense that not only would he be conflicted by Archie taking Augusto’s seat after the horrific crash but also over his burgeoning feelings… it-doesn’t-mean-he’s-gotta-be-an-ass-about-it! Stamping all over my boy’s feelings like that. Grumpy butt that he is *fold arms*. Hence The Grudge. I wanted Oscar-worthy grovelling!

TO is an intense adrenaline fuelled ride packed with heat and emotion where love is the ultimate win.

Love is in the air and at the racetrack!
Archie and Noah . The rookie and the legend.
Their attraction for each other was instant and nuclear in intensity.
Being F1 drivers for the same team caused issues that needed a delicate handling.
I just love how the author handled their love story!
We get attraction, intense heat, conflict, more heat and then........man it took the breath right out of me reading a certain part of this book!
I don't want to give anything away but I will say this....Archie and Noah's journey from the beginning to the end was beautiful to read.

The reader is in for a rollercoaster of emotions and you will meet amazing side characters! So buckle up buttercup!

Love is Love 💖
Fingers crossed that Cody gets his story told too.

I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Darum geht’s:

I have to admit that I know even less about F1 racing than I do NASCAR, mainly because of where I live. But I am so excited to get to read all of these books in this Lights Out series. Some of my favorite authors are involved. The first one is Team Orders by RJ Scott, whom I already love. Noah and Archie are the rookie and the veteran, both at odds with each other and with the insane chemistry between them. It doesn’t help that Noah’s best friend was almost killed in a crash. These characters gripped me from the first page. Neither one is sure of what they should do. Noah just needs to get out of his own head and they both need to admit what they really want. These two are perfect for each other; they just have to figure out how to make it work.

I’m not normally one for motor sports but when I saw the blurbs for this new series I needed to read. Team orders is the first book in the lights out series and it honestly sets high expectations for the other books.
I loved Archie straight away, he is such a sweetheart. Noah however was hard to warm up to at first and the hot/cold mean attitude towards Archie made me feel like slapping him for hurting Archie. Archie is a rookie coming up from f2 as a reserve driver. He also has a huge crush on his teammate Noah. Noah is closeted and basically Archie he needs to stay hidden like him. There’s clearly a mutual attraction and not just on a physical level. It causes a lot of tension and Noah’s grumpy a-hole side comes out in full force. There’s a slow build to their relationship and a few emotional moments some of which left me with tears in my eyes. When Noah sees sense he and Archie have a sweet connection the blossoms into a lovely relationship and their HEA was well worth the wait.
There are so beautiful friendships in this book, Noah and Augusto seem more like brothers than just team mates. I also loved the banter between Archie and AJ these two are way more than brothers they are best friends. I hope that at some point there’s a story for AJ as he really make me smile.
While there is some steamy times they aren’t as spicy as some I have read but to me that suits who Noah and Archie are as people.
This is only my second book by R J and I will welcome any recommendations of her previous work as I thoroughly enjoyed team orders and R J’s style of writing. I honestly found it hard to step away from this book as I wasn’t ready to say bye to Archie and Noah:

This is definitely a treat for any F1 fan. The insights and behind the scenes action are amazing . Being a F1 fan for over 40 years I can attest to that. Another treat is the relationship between two drivers on the same team - almost impossible to 'get out of the the closet ' if they want to keep their careers. So they need to find a ballance between their professional and personal lives - which is near to impossible, because the whole racing circuit mostly depends on sponsors who might drop them (and entire team in some cases) just at the hint of some of their sponsored drivers being gay.
What I loved the most is that this book is portraying the drivers that most "fans" would hardly notice, because the crowd mostly tends to cheer for the top dogs - the demands of their job and passion to get to the top, what are they willing to sacrifice to get there, although many never will. So does any other book in this amazing series. Each is a standalone written by a different author portraying different couple but featuring same characters in the same time frame and you can read them in any order. Some will get to the top, some won't, based on hard decisions and life altering choices.
This book in particular was a heart stopper for me. I've seen many tragic accidents (too many If you ask me) in F1 and other sports, but experiencing it from another driver's POW was heartbreaking and masterfully written.
I'll definitely read the whole series.

From the start this book has intensity about it. Noah is closeted and this oozes out in his 'grumpy' and rehearsed personality, he has pressure coming at him from so many angles; the racing, his sexuality, his feelings for Archie and fears for his best friend, Augusto. He does what he does best: hides. This is not easy when he had to race alongside Archie and it causes a lot of tension between them. This book will definitely appeal to those who love motorsport. The races are well written with lots of thrilling narration. This is a slow burn due to their secret relationship and the intimate scenes are not overly detailed but we somehow still get their emotion and love for each other coming through strongly. You find yourself rooting for them to get themselves sorted out.  The epilogue jumps 7 years so we get our happy ever after and updated with the secondary characters.

This was a great multi author series opener, and I’m so glad someone has written a series set in the world of Formula 1 racing; it was exciting, emotional and a great read.
Archie is adorable and I loved him and Noah together, although Noah had a little bit of redeeming to do for the way he treated Archie in the beginning. They have an instant attraction, which is tempered by their being on the same team and keeping their true feelings under wraps, but boy oh boy when the heat turned up, the slow burn went from zero to a hundred in seconds.
I loved the secondary characters in their racing team, especially Augusto, who added some humour to the story, plus we also got to meet characters who will appear in the other books in the series, with glimpses into their lives to whet our appetites.
This was a definite page-turner for me that I couldn’t put down, and I highly recommended it.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

I know less than nothing about car racing. And yet, RJ Scott wrote the book, so I had to read it. And there is a lot of detail about racing - she clearly did her homework and/or is a fan of the sport. But even though I didn’t have context for the details of being an F1 driver to make sense, I found this a thoroughly enjoyable tale.

First off, can we just talk about Noah and Augusto’s friendship? What a delight. I loved that they could be competitive and still be besties. Their relationship is so refreshing. Often m/m romances don’t develop non-romantic relationships so this was a breath of fresh air.

As for the romance itself, Archie and Noah and their inextricable connection ….. (*fans self*) ….. serious hotness.

Add in the way that Scott deftly handles all the noise in Noah’s head and all of Archie’s insecurities as a new F1 driver, and I found the story to be riveting.

5 stars.

The thing that I absolutely love about RJ’s writing is she draws you into the story quickly. She doesn’t relinquish it till you have your HEA. Archie and Noah are both closeted race car drivers with Archie being the called up rookie. RJ explains the F1 racing where it is believable. I was captivated by both MC’s and the storyline. The chemistry between both Noah and Archie is palpable and you can feel why they fell for each other.

I refuse to give anything away in this book or the series. I was fortunate to receive an ARC of this series and I’ve quickly read them. They are that good. So do yourself a favor, quickly download this book and enjoy the series. ❤️

I enjoyed this book for the most part. Archie is really sweet and I was cheering for him to find everything he wanted in both his career and his romantic life. Noah… well he was a bit of a different story. I struggled to warm up to him for the entire first half of the book. I’m used to getting the back and forth in romance books of course, I just think Noah rubbed me the wrong way in how he did it to Archie. But when he finally showed how he felt, he became completely likeable. Their chemistry was always present, and when the two characters are equally as present in the relationship, I ended up adoring them. And then there was a super sweet HEA to make your heart sing!

I really enjoyed this book. I haven’t read a race car story in a while, it was refreshing to read another type of sport. It gave me insight of the race car world, answering questions if I happen to watch it on tv to answer why they do that. It was a slow burn to get together and stay together but once they did it was too quick to the end. I really enjoyed this couple that I hope to see them as cameo in the other books. I’ve read most of all this authors books and was not disappointed. Great book.

I really enjoyed the book. This is book 1 in a multi author Lights Out series about formula one racing. Archie is 23 and won the F2 racing. Noah is a veteran racer for the F1. Archie gets called up as a reserve driver and has had a crush on Noah for years. When he meets his idol, it was so cute the way he fumbled. This book is all about how they navigated their racing career with trying to slowly start their relationship. Loved the way they interacted with hot and steamy scenes. Cannot wait to read more on this series and I especially loved the epilogue.

I really enjoyed this book. There's a good mix of factual information about F1 and storyline to keep you interested.
The lead characters work well as a couple and had a nice slow burn to the relationship throughout the book.
The storyline offers heat, excitement and conflict...what more do you need as a reader.
The epilogue jumps 7 years so you also get a happy ever after.
Would definitely recommend this book.

Great start to a series I’ve been anticipating since it was announced. There’s instant attraction between the rookie and legend. Archie and Noah are thrown together when a teammate is injured in a race. Noah tries to resist the draw he has to Archie but it doesn’t last. It took a bit for me to warm up to Noah - he was very hot and cold with Archie. Once they were on the same page, they were so hot! Looking forward to the rest of the series!

The romance development felt choppy and abrupt, almost like I was reading a summary of their relationship.

I would’ve loved to see stuff more hashed out and explored (especially about Noah and augusto’s friendship, as Noah had so many feelings about the accident but we never follow up much with augusto besides brief updates).

What’s the point of a forbidden sports romance if you break the tension within the first 10%? Also, the writing is pretty bad. I hope the other books in this collection are better.

Good start to this new series of F1 books. The writing is very natural and it's clear that RJ Scott knows the world of Formula 1, as it's very obvious that she has done a great deal of research beforehand. The story is well written, with some angst thrown in. Archie is the rookie, Noah is at the top of his game, their attraction is immediate and has the potential to cause all sorts of problems. It's a bit of an emotional rollercoaster with a good balance of action, relationships and romance. There's a good cast of secondary characters, especially AJ and Augusto, both of whom add to the story. There's a lovely epilogue too. The story provides a good base for the whole series, looking forward to the next book. 4.5 stars.
