Finding Your Way

Rate this book
Zanda is seventeen. She is Latvian. She wants three things in life: to stay in her home country, date her boyfriend, and have a career. There is a problem with each of these things, though.

Zanda’s friends and even her family think that she should board a plane and depart to England the moment she graduates from school. Her boyfriend is intelligent and every mother’s dream, but he is Russian. She plans to study at the university but hates the thought of having to live on the ugly outskirts of the capital with her parents for four more years.

And then, there is Zanda’s love for the countryside. Witch’s Pond is a small, lovely town where her grandmother lives and where Zanda spends her summers.

Zanda feels torn between her equally ardent dreams about having a life in the capital and living in the countryside.

Meeting the infuriating and handsome nineteen-year-old Latvian guy Viestards, who like her has different views on how he should live his life, makes Zanda’s dilemmas even more complicated. However, Viestards’s dream to turn his land into a profitable venture is endangered. And it will take a lot of gumption to pursue this dream against all odds.

It is the summer of 2008, the last one before the global financial crisis. While for Latvia it promises to be a time of hardships and challenges, for Zanda’s family and for Viestards it might be a time of opportunities to change their lives.

There is a slight touch of magical realism in the book that conveys a deep connection many Latvians still have with ancient pagan roots and traditions.

“Finding Your Way” is a contemporary young adult novel set in Latvia in 2008.

I’ve been in love with books for as long as I remember myself. The typewriter my first attempts at writing had been made at still sits proudly on its shelf in the basement, and when I go down there, I always have an urge to save it from its exile.

I’ve always been writing something. Diaries, letters, poems, short stories. I’d even attempted to write a novel a couple of times when I was about thirteen. Still, there was always something more important than my writing.

There was always “real life” reminding me of its undeniable claims. “You have to study, you have to work, there is no place for fruitless dreaming,” it whispered. And I moved forward as if running on rails I couldn’t step down from.

I’d spent fifteen years, trying to fit into the office work pattern. Do you remember Kevin Kline in the “In & Out” movie – “men do not dance”? Well, that used to be my philosophy – real people don’t write books. They work, they build careers, they travel through the corporate jungle. And despite I was feeling miserable and out of place every day of that climbing the ladder process, I managed to build a relatively successful career after an ambitious shift from the private to the public sector. The job I had wasn’t boring. It was actually pretty exciting. I worked with internationally funded projects and met people from all over the world every day. But it failed to ignite a spark in my heart.
After my son was born, I had a unique chance to stop and rethink not only what I’d achieved so far, but what I really want from life. I made a decision to leave my old life behind, and I’ve never regretted it. Changes in the daily routine led naturally to changes in my way of thinking. I finally allowed myself to be who I really was.

Since then, I’ve published six books.

The Neglected Merge fantasy romance/drama trilogy:

- Book 1 “Neglected Merge”

(i) Silver Medal in the 2021 Global Book Awards in the Science Fiction / Fantasy category
(ii) Award Finalist in the 2021 Readers’ Favorite International Book Award Contest in the Fantasy General category
(iii) Honorable Mention in the 2021 Royal Dragonfly Book Awards in the Science Fiction/Fantasy category.

- Book 2 “Tangle of Choices”
Honorable Mention in the 2023 Royal Dragonfly Book Awards in the Science Fiction/Fantasy category.

- Book 3 “Shifting Directions”

Books set in Latvia:
- “Finding Your Way”
Honorable Mention in the 2023 Royal Dragonfly Book Awards in the Cultural Diversity category.

- “The Accidental Cop”
(i) Finalist award in the Pacific Book Awards 2023 contest in the Best Thriller category;
(ii) Honorable Mention in the 2023 Royal Dragonfly Book Awards in the Fiction Novel category.

Women's Fiction:
- "Broken Chances"

I really loved FINDING YOUR WAY by Latvian author Eve Koguce. I have enjoyed Eve’s fantasy books immensely, and I have to say this was my very favorite because I loved the way the author brought the love and pride she has for her country into the book. Zanda is a young Latvian girl who is a about to graduate high school and has choices ahead of her. Her father works at a wood processing plant and her mother works in childcare. Her family has grown up outside the capital city of Riga in housing that is safe but older. Her brother has moved to the UK, like many young people do for better economic opportunities. FINDING YOUR WAY explores many themes like dating people from other cultures, whether to stay somewhere that represents what is in your heart even if it might mean more financial risk, politicians and wealthy businessmen taking advantage of regular citizens (this comes into play with Viestards, a young man who lives in the country that Zanda gets to know as she spends time with her grandmother in the summers.) I just really enjoyed this novel because I love books that immerse me in another culture and make me feel like I have taken a trip to somewhere I’ve never been. The descriptions and lovely setting were so well done and I’m really excited to see there will be another book! 5/5 stars.

Beautiful coming of age story

What struck me straight away, was how beautifully written this book is. The coming of age story of a young Latvian girl called Zanda. A modern girl who has seen first hand the struggles in her country growing up. Nonetheless Zanda wants more for her life, she is focused and driven to be independent and to stay in the country where she was born and loves.
The story shows us the strength and determination of this young girl, woman who goes on to have a career whilst never losing sight of herself her country or her family.
Herein also is a beautifully woven love story that just fills your 💓 This book is both uplifting and heartwarming.
I especially loved the additional information from the author at the end about her country and to learn some Latvian words, what a gorgeous language.
I highly recommend this book.

I'd been missing Eve Koguce's beautiful writing, compelling characters, and wondrous storytelling, with the completion of her "Neglected Merge" dystopian-fantasy-romance series.

Thankfully I didn't have to wait too long for a new book - and more of the above - by this author, though it was a departure from the pure fantastical, into the magical realism stream, with Koguce's latest novel, the coming-of-age story, "Finding Your Way", set in the first decade of the 21st century.

Set in what I understand to be one of the world's most picturesque, enticing, and desirable countries - Latvia - "Finding Your Way" introduces us to Zanda Blumfelde, a young Latvian who is at a crossroads in her life.

About to embark on her university education, a tumultuous yet exciting summer stretches before Zanda, filled with interesting new friends, the allure of the cosmopolitan city of Riga, the pull of the stunning Latvian countryside, the gorgeous beaches, the summer festivals, and an attractive, kind, loyal, and intelligent new boyfriend, Aaron.

Aaron seems like a great catch, the son of academics, well-off financially, but there's one big snag: Aaron is Russian. Latvians and Russians are inextricably intertwined over centuries that have included various times of Russian rule. But when the action of "Finding Your Way'' unfolds, Latvian has already gained independence from the then-Soviet Union for almost two decades, and has been a member of NATO for several years.

Despite the shared heritage, and close proximity, a certain general measure of suspicion and mistrust, and discrimination against one another, exists between Latvians and Russians (about a quarter of the Latvian population), even though many work together, are friends, or intermarried and have children together, or have close relatives of either country.

This makes the prospect for Zanda and Aaron's relationship succeeding more difficult.

Moreover, Zanda is a bright, capable, strong-willed young woman who is fiercely proud of, and attached to her country, and her heart tells her she'll be happiest being in Latvia, becoming a professional or some sort, rather than trying her fortunes abroad, like many of her friends, and even her brother have elected to do.

But which Latvia should Zanda cleave to? The dazzling capital of Riga, where she envisions herself working in a successful office job, or elsewhere?

For, over the years, family visits to her witty and plucky grandmother in the enchanting village of Witch's Pond, have always placed Zanda in touch with the side of her that is captivated by the pastoral and rustic.

Yet that summer between high school and university, Zanda encounters a handsome, enigmatic, and captivating young man, Viestards, whose lands  are threatened by the greedy and unscrupulous forces who covet them. She is drawn to Viestards, but what about Aaron?

And what about the life Zanda thinks she wants, and deserves?

"Finding Your Way" is a book, foremost about choices, and the decisions one makes that shapes their future. Will Zanda be able to make the right choices, while negotiating the challenges and positives of her culture, upbringing, and heritage, while forging a path that is true to what she holds dearest?

Once more, Koguce has excelled in creating characters that the reader can't help being drawn to, that are extremely well-fleshed out. The protagonist is complex, and the situation around her is complicated too, but it brings out the best of her innate abilities, values, and spirituality.

There were many moments I was frustrated with her, moments I cheered for her, but ultimately because Koguce writes her so well, from all the angles - flaws, blemishes, and positive aspects - I UNDERSTOOD her.

Zanda has been sheltered, and is somewhat innocent and naive in many ways, in her upbringing, and has had to play dutiful daughter to her parents - whose marriage seems imbalanced, with her somewhat distant mother carrying most of the burdens, emotional, financial, and otherwise, where her father seems to merely 'exist'.

Her brother has succumbed to the lure of migration abroad, for the promise of stable if unexciting employment, and scorns Zanda for being resolved to make a life in Latvia. Zanda bears the burden of varying expectations from her family with grace, fortitude, and common sense, while striving for her own future, which is very admirable.

With the charming romance dilemma of the book, Zanda must decide not only what but WHO she wants. Both Viestards and Aaron are good people, smart, and offer different things to Zanda that she would want in a partner. But she can't have both...she must choose.

The secondary characters are also phenomenal. The obstinate but endearing Viestards, and his courage in the face of trying to preserve his sustenance, the pleasant and affable Aaron, still haunted by a previous relationship, cautiously developing something with Zanda, the alluring but somewhat mercenary and bewildering Gerda, the long-suffering but stoic Lauma who is the glue holding the family in place, all these and more make up a great auxiliary character group for the novel.

I must add that the bewitching country of Latvia is like another character in the book. I have never been to Latvia, but Koguce swept me away with her evocative writing to this place of white sand beaches, lush forests, beautiful fauna, and stunning cultural metropolis of Riga. Koguce is Latvian, and she has enthralled me, writing about her homeland through Zanda's eyes, and made me long to visit Latvia one day.

Koguce tackles some fascinating themes in "Finding Your Way". Dating outside of one's culture, staying and rooting oneself in one's home or spreading one's wings abroad, what it means to be an adult, what it means to be a loyal friend or partner, rigidly adhering to and valuing tradition or being more progressive while still maintaining ties with one's heritage, continuing to persevere when all seems hopeless - these are some of the compelling themes explored in the novel.

I loved the element of mysticism, linked to the agrestic Witch's Pond, whose very name screams supernatural. Do magical creatures like mermaids, ghosts, and fairies exist? And can they only be seen, when one is bonded with nature, and the more sylvan domains of places like Witch's Pond? And what do they want with humans?

Koguce's prose is one of the things I missed most about reading her books. It is elevated, with a formal, lyrical, poetic element that bespeaks to the somewhat fairy-tale moments of the books so well, in addition to the starkly real and slightly dark aspects. It is beautiful writing, that some may take a few pages to get accustomed to, but once you do, I believe you'll find it as lovely as I do.

Koguce captures so expertly, all the uncertainty, angst, and glory of being young, in love, conflicted, and having your life ahead of you, and not knowing quite what to do with it, with competing opinions of elders and contemporaries playing a part in your decision-making.

The author also writes a wonderful love story, combined with some fantastical elements, a bit of thriller-mystery, with some sinister undertones, along with heart-warming family ties, some political undertones about prevailing attitudes and values of Latvia of the time period, and a lot of hope and optimism.

"Finding Your Way" is a rare novel that will transport you to a wondrous country you might not have been to before, written from a fascinating perspective, with awesome characters, elegant prose, and delightful story of a girl entering womanhood, with all its adult freedom and responsibilities. I was happy to take part in Zanda's journey.

A glowing five stars for this marvellous book!

I've just returned to reality after immersing myself in the life of Zanda Blumfelde from Riga, Latvia. Zanda, is a girl you might find familiar. She is so sweet, innocent, caring but at the same time hardworking and ambitious. You will see reflections of her in the young women in your life- daughters, sisters, friends or perhaps even when you look in the mirror.
Author Eve Koguce offers a glimpse into a proud country, part of the European Union, with a lot of opportunities for those willing to look. Yet, you see that many young Latvians wanting to take the easy route and migrate to countries like UK or the USA for better opportunities. This is where Zanda stands out. She is ambitious, true, but she doesn't want to take the easy route of migration. When others around her see a struggling nation she sees herself being a successful professional in Latvia itself even though she is not quite sure what she wants to do, yet. She has a plan, a shimmery plan but her path is not so clear to her. But whatever it is she wants it to be in Latvia, and I love that about her. She is not portrayed as patriotic or anything but Latvia lives in her heart.
Everyone believes that Zanda is a city girl born and bred on account of her affinity to better her prospects through education but Zanda's heart is always ruled by the magical village which her grandmother lives in - Witch's Pond.
And just as she is torn between her love for the hustle and bustle of the city and the quiet beauty of the country she is drawn to two young men- both confident, collected, caring and genuine, but one from the city and one ambitious but destined to plant his root in WItch's Pond. Zanda's heart is again torn by conflict.
Finding Your Way is a novel about choices. It is a story about accepting the truth that we may be conflicted at the best of times, but as long as our heart is in the right place, and we are willing to work toward our goals, we will always find out way.
In Zanda, Author Eve Koguce has created a beautiful character. One so achingly real. You feel her doubts, and because of the skill with which the author has presented the character as a reader you never resent, or dislike Zanda, even when she is conflicted terribly about the direction her life should take. You the reader, never feel impatient with her but you're willing to give her the space to breathe and make up her mind.
Latvia and Zanda together with the rest of the characters are magical and will hold your attention and before you know it, dear reader you might end up giving them a piece of your heart.

Zanda is a young woman with lots of promise. A hard working student from Latvia. Aaron is Russian, the pair are dating and experience young love, but culture means they will never have a future.
Zanda has ambitions of bigger and better things in life but she must navigate the politics, culture and pressures of her country whilst not loosing her own dreams of the world.

Zanda goes to stay with her grandmother l, Ausma, for a while, after completing her school studies, and before her university studying begins. The midsummer festivities, and Ligo Day are due. On visiting her grandmother at Witch’s Point, Zanda encounters a mythical creature. But was it real or not? She begins to see them again, but they only appear visible to certain people, including Zanda’s grandmother’s neighbour, Viestards, who has made an impression on Zanda.

The pair become close and as Viestards livelihood and land is compromised, Zanda wants to help.
Finding Your Way shares a summer of growing up, change, chance, and challenge. It is a wonderful journey with wonderful characters, and a sprinkling of magical realism.

I enjoyed the Latvian language in this throughout. It added to the authenticity and education of the book. I also enjoyed the gentle focus on politics, trade, financial struggles, and culture of the country.

"Finding Your Way" by Eve Koguce

🧞‍♀️If you want to feel yourself a student again, travel around Latvia and meet a mermaid, this book is definitely what you need.

🧞‍♀️The Plot: Zanda is a young Latvian girl. Leaving her school years behind, she is about to dive into adventurous University life. But before making the next step, she finds herself in a sort of a salle d'attende, a waiting room named summer vacation. While her friends enjoy the summer to the fullest, Zanda faces uneasy choices. Drifting on the waves of the boiling Baltic sea full of first love challenging choices, future career perspectives, revealing true friendships aspects, and sneaking into the first sights of adult life, beautiful Zanda is trying to find her way. And only time will show whether the choices made were the right ones.

🧞‍♀️The Writing Style: I've read all the books by Eve Koguce and enjoyed reading them so much. "Finding Your Way" doesn't differ much from the author's previous trilogy. It is written in an exquisite style. There were so many intrigues, mind-blowing twists, and true-life heart-squeezing episodes. But all the stormy and calm events were perfectly described in the tiniest details! I could feel the drops of the sea salt water on my lips, enjoy a delicious pie on the occasion of the name day of the character, pick up the cucumbers in a cozy garden and say 'hi' to noisy seagulls flying around. Traveling around Latvia, peering into secluded and mystical places, made my imagination bloom to the full. This brilliant, thrilling, beautifully emotional young-adult novel warmed my heart, making me travel back in time when emotions ran high and everything seemed a bit more miraculous than in adulthood.

🧞‍♀️The Characters: It felt like I met an old friend, and she told me a chapter from her life. It seemed as if I had known Zanda for ages. I mean that the author succeeded in making the main character so real that I felt the connection from the first pages. Spending time with Zanda in a salle d'attende, I met many lovely people that were such a pleasure to meet; some appeared to be "not my people." It means – bravo to Eve Koguce! Even if you want to take a shower after meeting the unpleasant characters, it is a huge achievement to create them in such an elegant style. All of them are described in a royal, well-mannered, and polite tone.

💙The Fave Quote: “Most things don’t deserve to be taken seriously.”

🥰Would I read other books by this author: Undoubtedly!

🌟My humble rating is: 5/5

FINDING YOUR WAY is an utterly captivating read which I demolished in three sittings. Set in Latvia in 2008, the book explores so many themes within its pages, including the history, customs, and culture of Latvia. We hear much about Koguce’s motherland, and her passion shines through in her words. I loved the smattering of magic realism throughout the story, too. Zanda is a delightful MC, a sweet, somewhat naïve young woman, who also possesses a strong mind and works incredibly hard to realize her ambitions in life. I loved the supporting characters too—Koguce is an expert in writing strong, credible characters. Finding Your Way is a coming of age novel about choices, and those choices aren’t always straightforward—everybody has different dreams, and sometimes life throws a curve ball. The love interests are pleasantly executed, and between the kind and loyal Aaron, who lives in the hustle and bustle of the city, and the enigmatic, sweet and strong-willed Viestards, who lives in the country—Zanda has yet more choices to make. Witch’s Pond sounds positively captivating, and so well written. It’s some place I’d love to visit one day! Finding Your Way is a magical read that I’d highly recommend—you may lose a part of your heart to Latvia.

This was a love letter to Latvia and although not my usual choice for a book to read (it contains no time travel, murders or talking cats) I really enjoyed it. The link of ancient, recent past and new Latvia were very interesting. Eve Koguce knows how to engage a reader and I appreciate her writing style. I look forward to reading her next book which will also be set in Latvia but with a different outlook and a male perspective according to the "About The Author" notes.

We first meet Zanda Blumfelde, aged seventeen, in her last year of school in the early 2000s. Life in Riga, the capital of Latvia, can be challenging although it is possible to live well enough, as Zanda does at home with her parents. Her older brother, like many young people, has moved to the UK hoping for a better life.

Unlike her peers, Zanda envisions a much better future in Riga, where she dreams of a career and family life. Fiercely independent, she fights against all advice and challenges that might take her away from the path she is determined to follow.

A chance encounter with a neighbour to Zanda’s grandmother, who lives in the country, changes Zanda’s life yet also sets her on her way. But does her life unfold the way she had pictured? You truly need to read Finding Your Way to learn how it all turns out.

In your reading you will become immersed in and enriched by Latvian culture and traditions.

Eve Koguce writes with eloquence and imagination so the reading experience is truly enjoyable. The story is intriguing and I found myself constantly wondering what would go wrong. This aspect of the story turns out to be a surprise.

Koguce never fails in her storytelling and Finding Your Way is worthy read for everyone.

Finding Your Way is a magical, beautifully written coming of age story that celebrates the Eastern European treasure, Latvia. I loved learning about the culture, the history and the challenges the citizens faced and the changes and growth that have taken place over the years. Koguce’s gorgeous, vivid descriptions of the city of Riga and the countryside village, Witch’s Pond, made the places come alive.

Seventeen-year-old Zanda is on the cusp of adulthood and has several hard decisions to make. While trying to figure out what to do with her future, she must choose between her Russian boyfriend and a handsome, infuriating Latvian young man who further complicates her life.

The romance was cute and enjoyable to read and reminded me of a time when every glance and touch made me blush and every new experience made me feel so alive.

I liked the plot twist and the way the story was wrapped up at the end.

I really enjoyed this book and recommend this lovely tribute to Latvia to those who love learning about new lands and romantic coming of age stories.

4.5 Stars. I normally avoid romances but this book is more than that. I recommend getting out a map of Latvia and reading the appendix on the history of Latvia beforehand. History, culture, biases, and the fate of today’s young people are all covered as well as an introduction to the language. A soupçon of the mythical spices the plot and it all works out.

I must admit, when I picked up Finding Your Way because it had an interesting cover, I hadn’t expected to actually finish the book. It’s a “Coming of Age” novel, not a favorite genre of mine, and I had preconceived notions of what such a book would be about. I finished the book in 3 days! Not only did the characters grab me—especially young Zanda, so innocent, yet so determined—but the writing itself took hold of me. The narrative is fast moving, with so much descriptive power that the settings appeared in my mind with ease, even more amazing because the book takes place in a tiny, faraway country I have never been to—Lativa.

It turns out the author, Eve Koguce, is a native Latvian, still living in that country, and obviously well-versed in the historic and cultural uniqueness of that place. I was fascinated. I had no idea that the pressure for young people to leave their country was so profound—even just ten years ago, perhaps even still—just to make a living. But our young protagonist resists that trend, believing in her country and believing in herself. She faces challenges that threaten to deter her from her course, and one suspects she might easily fail, as so many others before her had failed. So I raced through the book, wanting to know the final result, encountering so many different kinds of characters and circumstances. Some characters are Russian. Some are Latvian. About half and half, just like the population, since Lativa was part of the Soviet Union for so long. All so easy to absorb and feel because of the fabulous writing.

What a surprise Finding Your Way is! An amazing read!

One of the best things about reading is the ability to take a virtual trip to exotic destinations and learn foreign customs and beliefs. Finding Your Way does an excellent job of introducing the reader to Latvia. This is a delightful contemporary (set in 2008) YA/Coming-Of-Age story centering on seventeen-year-old Zanda. The topography, native language, and prevailing attitudes of Latvia are prominently featured in this tale. Zanda loves her heritage and is a studious, dutiful daughter and has a special bond with her grandmother. She is ready to leave her sheltered existence and attend college. She hopes, with the help of her higher education, she will have a rewarding career and live in Riga. Zanda has a kind boyfriend, Aaron, who helps her adjust to college life. Unlike her brother and most young people of her generation, Zanda has no wish to leave Latvia for the lure of high-paying, but dead-end work in England. I loved how this story immerses the reader into Zanda's world at this vital stage in her life-one that is influenced by tradition, her family, and legends of ghosts and magical creatures. Though young, Zanda is sensible and has a strong vision of her future. On a summer visit to her grandmother's rural home, a strong-willed young neighbour challenges her ideas, frustrates her, and makes her reconsider her choices. "Finding Your Way" took me on a delightful sojourn to a faraway land with endearing characters that I would love to visit with again!

What really makes people happy?

I like all the stories from this author, and this new novel pleasantly surprised me in many ways.

This coming-of-age story about Zanda is very thought provoking. Growing up in Latvia in times of crisis (2008), she is trying to understand the nature of human happiness and success. Unlike her brother and most of her friends who choose to work abroad, Zanda is trying to find a way to use her skills to improve the situation in her homeland.

As her story unfolds, she comes to understand that many people are moved by desire to earn money fast rather than work hard for it, and this discovery changes her life.

Also, I found the setting very engaging. Old streets of Riga and the endless beaches of Jurmala created a special atmosphere that teleported me into this beautiful country.

I recommend this story to the readers who like to explore unique places by reading and get inspired by mindful characters.

"Finding Your Way" by Eve Koguce offers an enchanting blend of coming-of-age drama, romance, and magical realism, all set against the beautiful backdrop of Latvia. Having walked the streets of Riga and experienced the beauty of Latvia's beaches firsthand, I was very happy to imagine this setting where Zanda lived and visited. Eve Koguce, being Latvian herself, adds a layer of authenticity that pulls readers into Zanda Blumfelde’s world.

The novel follows Zanda, a young Latvian woman on the cusp of adulthood, as she faces the challenges of making life-defining choices. With university on the horizon, Zanda’s summer is filled with pivotal decisions about her career, her love life, and, ultimately, her future in Latvia. Her relationships with two young men, Aaron, the kind and friendly Russian from the city, and Viestards, a captivating rural neighbor, reflect the broader societal and cultural complexities she must navigate. This tug-of-war between city and countryside, modernity and tradition, is mirrored in Zanda’s internal struggle—whether to stay in Latvia, where her heart lies, or seek opportunities abroad like so many of her peers.

The novel shines in its portrayal of Latvia as more than just a backdrop. From the cobbled streets of Riga to the village of Witch’s Pond, every setting feels alive, vibrant, and rich with cultural history. Koguce's descriptions of Latvia’s forests, festivals, and folklore are immersive, evoking not only the land's physical beauty but also its mystical allure. The novel also deftly weaves in the political and social undercurrents of Latvia, particularly the lingering tensions between Latvians and Russians, which adds depth to Zanda and Aaron’s relationship.

What makes "Finding Your Way" so engaging is Koguce’s talent for crafting characters that feel real and relatable. Zanda is a strong yet conflicted protagonist, grappling with family expectations and her own ambitions. The novel is filled with characters who bring their own charm and struggles, from Zanda’s lovely grandmother to Viestards, whose fight to protect his land from greedy businessmen adds tension and drama to the story.

At its heart, this is a story about choice and identity. Zanda’s journey is one of self-discovery, learning what she truly values in life and love. The romance is compelling, but it’s the novel’s deeper exploration of heritage and belonging that makes it stand out. With its blend of romance, culture, and a touch of the mystical, "Finding Your Way" is a deeply moving, thought-provoking read that transports you to the heart of Latvia.

Finding Your Way was a delightful coming-of-age story with a fascinating look at the country of Latvia - its past and future, its customs and beauty.

I've had the pleasure of reading Eve Koguce's books and blogs so I knew this was going to be special. But I didn't realize how much I was going to love Zanda and her journey. I was also completely captivated by her descriptions of the city, countryside and seaside areas of Latvia.

Seventeen-year-old Zanda is different from many of the young people her age, who want to leave the country and establish their lives elsewhere without an education. While Zanda wants to create a future in Latvia, get a good education, and live in the dynamic capital. But her heart also belongs with her grandmother in Witch's Pond. Even though Zanda is such a strong, driven character, I felt her struggle between what life in the country and life in the city could both provide her and how this challenged all of her plans for her future.

Eve Koguce's gorgeous descriptions of the city to the countryside had me enthralled with Latvia. I especially enjoyed the details of Witch's Pond. I truly felt like I was there with Zanda, in the forest and near the lake. I loved the moments of magical realism when she came in contact with the nature spirits and how those moments shaped her perspective of herself and her connection to the land around her. And experiencing the customs such as the summer solstice celebration was such a treat and felt very genuine.

This book was truly a pleasure to read, and I highly recommend it both for Zanda's journey and for the adventure through Latvia. I can't wait to read Eve Koguce's next book!

This book is quite interesting. The story kept me going. The characters are good. I like them. I do enjoy the whimsical and summer vibes and the culture. I had fun reading it. You can definitely learn something new about the actual history and traditions of that country. If you like women's fiction about finding your purpose in the world, then you might like this book.

There were multiple grammatical and spelling errors (hear vs. here), the MC can "feel" the smells coming from the kitchen, and at one point, "Anna" becomes "Anya". There is no Anya in the story. Punctuation was also a big problem.

"Oh, well, what else could you expect," Aaron rolled his eyes.

And strange sentences

The street looked like it had stepped right from a few centuries ago.
She would spend the whole visit time looking out at the roofs if she could.

These are only a few examples of many.

Every time I thought something exciting would happen (for example, the MC goes skinny dipping and her love interest is nearby), the scene ends abruptly. The author overuses the dash. It shows up dozens of times throughout the story. Because of the errors and the fact that the story wasn't exciting, but merely a sort of regurgitation of Latvian life, and the reader is given a very underwhelming ending, it didn't warrant more than 1 star from me.
