This is the eleventh book in this popular series, but the first one I have read.

Julia Snowden and her mother attend a memorial service for a friend who has been missing for five years, and is now presumed dead. At the service Julia's mother starts to suspect things are not quite right and, after a few more odd events, Julia begins to investigate the case. The suspicion is that the disappearance was a murder, but who would have done it and where is the body? There are many possible suspects but luckily there are diaries which start to throw up clues.

The story is well told and the characters are all nicely rounded and, even though I had not met any of them before, they all made sense immediately. The setting on the coast of Maine is beautiful - just look at the bookcover - and the descriptions of those buttery lobster meals is mouth watering. There are a few interesting recipes at the end too.

I will have to find the earlier books in the series now!

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Hidden Beneath is the 11th book in the Maine Clambake Mysteries written by Barbara Ross. This gem of a cozy amateur sleuth investigation series is entertaining, charming, and easy to read. As a 30ish single woman living in Maine with her sister and mother, Julia runs the family clambake business but often finds herself helping the local police solve homicides. In this installment, a long ago friend of her mother's has a memorial service; the woman went missing in the nearby seas five years earlier and has finally been declared dead. When Julia's mom reunites with the group from her younger days, something is amiss. They realize someone killed the dead woman and now they must find her will and body in order to protect the house from being sold to the wrong people. Toss in tons of side stories revolving around Julia's ex-boyfriend, an offer to buy a local island, and a second murder, things get hectic and intense. Ross always creates a memorable storyline and brilliant setting. I want to move to Busman's Harbor and meet all the residents, even the cranky ones like Gus. Seeing Julia's mind accept the changes in her life and opening up to romance has been interesting, though I'm not entirely sure about the new pairing. The mystery was good but at the same time lighter than usual. I'm fearful the series may be coming to an end because there aren't a lot of avenues yet to explore but it is always a good one, so I hope not at the same time. Definitely a recommended read for cozy readers and those who love books set on the coast of Maine.

Dollycas's Thoughts

We are back in Busman’s Harbor, Maine where the Snowden Family Clambake on Morrow Island is a must-attend event when visiting the area. Julia and her mother Jaqueline have become summer residents of the island after a huge renovation of the mansion. It now has so many new possibilities for the family business.

Another island nearby is Chipmuck Island. A place where Jacqueline spent a lot of time with her friend Ginny while was growing up. Ginny still summered there but with the clambake and her family Jacqueline and Ginny lost touch. Five years ago, Ginny went out for her daily swim in the harbor but never returned. A body was never found and now after all this time, Ginny has been declared dead. The summer residents of Chipmuck Island are having a memorial service for her and Jacqueline has asked Julia to go with her.

The event was led by the women of the Wednesday Club, a group Ginny belonged to, but something about the whole service felt off to Jacqueline and Ginny's house was wrong too. Walls had been painted and furnishings had been moved. Julia and her mom start investigating Ginny's case and asking a lot of questions. When another resident of Chipmuck Island is murdered they turn up the heat on their investigation to find the truth before anyone else ends up dead.

_____

I love returning to Busman's Harbor with each new installment of this series. It is as if you can just pull up a chair on the beach and relax and enjoy whatever Julia and her family get involved in. With this 11th story, I need to plant me and my chair on a different beach though and Jacqueline is playing a larger role. Both Julia and her mom are strong women with huge hearts and curious natures. Reconnecting with the Wednesday Club and introducing them to Julia set up this very interesting story. The author created a complicated group of women and we even get to know some of their families. It isn't easy to add a big group like this for one book and give the characters enough depth to be more than just background characters but Ms. Ross did a wonderful job.

The mystery was unique. I loved the way Julia and her mom worked together. There is also a surprising caretaker of Chipmuck Island that helps with the case. And when Julia brings her theories to the police they know they better listen. With several twists and secrets revealed over the course of the book, it becomes very difficult to put the book down. I had some theories of my own but I soon saw I was on the wrong track and needed to just sit back and let Julia do the work. I was surprised by the way the story twisted for a big reveal and saddened too.

I enjoyed the varied subplots interwoven with the main plotline. They allowed readers to catch up with all the characters we have come to love. Jacqueline has another huge thing to deal with in addition to getting justice for her friend. Julia has an awakening of her own and another character has decided it is time to take their life in a new direction.

We learn in the acknowledgments that The Wednesday Club evolved from a group the author's mother had belonged to since the 1960s that may still exist today. She has a treasure of her mom's from her time in the group. The premise was fascinating but would be a little too intense for most women today. Give me a topic or a book and I am all up for a discussion but researching the topic in depth would not be my thing. Of course, I am all in on the eats, treats, and beverages served at the meetings.

Hidden Beneath was a marvelous read. A cast of characters that are like old friends and a top-notch mystery, set in a perfect summer place. I was totally entertained.

The author has whet my appetite for Book 12 with the final paragraphs of this book. Until my next visit to Busmaan's Harbor . . . I hope we don't have to wait too long.

A top-notch cozy series and this book may be my favorite out of the eleven books and yet Fast paced with could easily be read as a standalone. The Snowden Family Clambake is hitting its busy season, but everything is under control. Julia's mom asks her to attend a memorial service on a nearby island with long established summer residents and a tight community. Her mom is shocked to discover she has been named as the executor of her estate when they hadn't been in touch for four decades, except for that one phone call shortly before she went missing. Julia essentially bevomes enmeshed in this cold case which may harbor another even older cold case. Fast paced and compelling. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

#HiddenBeneath #NetGalley is the 11th book in the clambake series, and it is my favorite!
I was immediately intrigued about the disappearance of a Chipmunk Island resident, which happened 5 years before.
Julia's mother is named executor of the will, and this sets off a wild string of events.
It seems that everyone has a deep secret, and when Julia begins asking questions, she soon becomes a target.
I read this book in one sitting, I could not put it down.
The ending was great and I'm very excited to catch up with this colorful group of characters in the next book.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.
I highly recommend this series to all cozy mystery readers.

Hidden Beneath by Barbara Ross is an excellent cozy mystery and is the 11th book in the Maine Clambake Mystery series.

This is one of my all-time favorite series and Ms. Ross is pure talent. I have read every one of the entries including the novellas.

This continues to be excellent as always. This time Julia and her Mom are together in finding out why her Mom was designated an executor of will to her high school friend Ginny that she had not been as close with in decades. It ends up intertwining with her mysterious disappearance, another historic tragedy near Chipmunk Island, and a few twists and turns in the process.

I loved the murder/mystery, spending more time with Julia and the whole collection of Busman’s Harbor inhabitants (and those surrounding the coastal Maine town). I also really liked how it ended. ;)

Well done.

And hello…apricot squares!

I love this series! Visiting Busman’s Harbor feels like coming home and I am so sad every time the book ends. This one was no exception. I love the renovations that have taken place on Morrow Island and the fact that Julia and her family now live out there. The introduction of Chipmunk Island and all its residents was a wonderful addition. The characters may be new, but they are just as well developed as my series-long friends. The mystery was interesting and kept me guessing until the very end. I was a little surprised by the romantic interest, but I guess it should have been expected. Curious to see where this goes.

Hidden Beneath is the eleventh book in the A Maine Clambake Mystery series by Barbara Ross.

This book is concerned with what turns out to be a cold-case murder. Most of the book will take place on a nearby island called Chipmunk Island.

Julia’s mother, Jacqueline, requests her to join her on a trip to Chipmunk Island for the memorial service for her childhood friend, Ginny. The memorial was headed by a group of ladies known as the Wednesday Club. Ginny disappeared five years ago while on her daily swim around Chipmunk Island. Ginny’s death was thought to be suicide. When Julia and Jacqueline return to the island a couple of weeks later, they find the Wednesday Club members feverously looking for Ginny’s will. They finally find the will, and Jacqueline is shocked to learn she has been named executor. Jacqueline is surprised as she hadn’t seen Ginny since her teen years when she visited Chipmunk Island during the summer.

Ginny also had a condo in Portland, Maine, which Jacqueline would have to clean. Ginny had faithfully kept journals since she was a teen. Jacqueline hoped they might explain what happened on her last day alive. Once back home, Jacqueline and Julia start reading through the diaries and soon think that the death of one of the Wednesday Club’s fathers might not have been an accidental death. So now Julia and Jacqueline will need to try and learn what happened that night when the father fell off his boat and drowned. Julia thinks if the father’s death was murder, then one of the Wednesday Club might have murdered Ginny.

This book is very well-written and plotted. Ms. Ross does an excellent job describing Cipmunk Island and its residents. The characters are well-developed and believable. The story moves at a good pace. There were enough red herring and twists and turns that I kept guessing until the end of the book to learn the killer's identity.

I’m looking forward to the next book in this excellent series.

This is not an unbiased review because I really enjoy this series and this addition is no exception.
Julia is part of the family (with widowed mom, sister, and other relatives) who operate the Snowden Family Clambake on their private island on the coast of Maine. Mom and Julia share a renovated Victorian on the island while her sister (a gifted potter) lives in town. The story starts with the declaration of presumed death of a woman who went missing five years ago and her will naming Julia's mom as executor. In cataloging items designated for a multitude of heirs in houses both in Boston and a neighboring island, many questions are raised and Julia becomes convinced that the disappearance was, indeed, due to death and that there was a possible murder to be solved. So the sleuthing begins! Great whodunit!
The ongoing characters seem so real and engaging, and the new ones are clearly presented. I loved it!

Another summer of clambakes and life on Morrow island with the Snowden family. Julia is just starting to find some peace and purpose in her life, her new apartment on the island, a winter gig she is looking forward to when her mother finds herself as the executioner of the will of an old friend. Jaqueline's old friend was declared legally dead after being missing for five years. Ginny disappeared after going for a swim that she took daily, but this time never returned. With Julia's help, the ladies try to deal with the estate but spending time on Chipmunk Island, and dealing with a bunch of Ginny's old friends, raise more and more questions about how and why Ginny disappeared and when another of the group is murdered, can Julia figure out all the secrets buried deep? A very intriguing mystery that definitely pulls you in. Perfect summer tale!

This one was full of surprises. I did not see some of the dynamics changing within the characters. Julia's mother is named to handle all the will terms. Her mother is confused as to why and the death of her old friend. As she and her mother becomes closer to the truth another murder happens. On top of all of that happening Julia discovers that her mother was offered a life changing amount of money for the island.

I have been a fan of the recent holiday-themed novellas in this series. I really enjoyed the main character Julia Snowden and her approach to sleuthing. That's why I was so excited to read this full-length novel which has Julia investigating a cold case of an old friend of her mother's who disappeared years earlier from during her daily swim. The missing woman has an usual circle of friends on Chipmunk Island where she made her home. Many old secrets come out during Julia's investigation that could have a huge effect on many people's current lives.

I enjoy the Maine setting of the book, as well as the details about the family restaurant in this well-written mystery. (There are a few recipes at the end of the book.) I was kept guessing as to what really happened to Ginny. There are also some interesting developments in Julia's personal life that fans of the series won't want to miss. New readers who enjoy mysteries set in Maine and/or fans of Ellie Alexander will enjoy this book. I really enjoyed reading this book and I want to continue following this series. 4.5 stars

Julia's mother Jackie has brought her to an exclusive summer colony on Chipmunk Island, she didn't want to attend a memorial service for an old friend alone. Ginny went missing over a decade ago and she is finally being declared dead after all that time. Julia thinks something weird is going on with the group of ladies know as the Wednesday Club who had been friends with Ginny since childhood. Julia and her mom decide to take a look into Ginny's missing persons case in hopes of figure out just what happened to her all those years ago. They soon find many hidden secrets among the group but have to figure out just how the pieces fit. Will they find a killer before anyone else ends up dead?

A favorite series

When and if this series ever ends I will cry. All the characters one the Maine Clambake series feel like family even Grumpy Gus.

This was a good change of scenery even though it was just another island across the bay. It felt like a whole new world. One little island that was only open during the summer sure held a lot of secrets and sadness. But through all the bad some very good things occurred. Especially in the romance life of Julia.

I do suggest you read the series from the beginning in order to get the full effect.

This is the eleventh book in the Maine clambake series. Julia and her mother, Jaquline, attend a memorial on chipmunk island for Jaqueline's friend, Ginny, who disappeared five years earlier. It comes out that Ginny made Julia's mom the executor of her will. Julia spends her time helping her mom get everything settled. It also comes to light that Ginny's death might not have been an accident. While Julia investigates, we get to catch up with the characters in the series and see how they have grown in the last couple books. I really enjoy this series and can't wait to read more.

I’m new to the Clambake Mystery series; a series that I’ve been meaning to read for a while. I wasn’t disappointed. Amateur sleuth Julia Snowden accompanies her mother, Jacqueline, to Chipmunk Island for a memorial service for Mom’s longtime friend, Ginny, who’d disappeared five years ago after going for a swim. Ginny was recently declared officially dead. As they arrive for the service, Julia questions why Jacqueline had never mentioned Ginny. As they poke around the island, answers and clues are revealed slowly and carefully, giving readers just enough to turn each page. The intrigue builds as we discover that Jacqueline is the executor of Ginny’s estate, and journals are found that reveal secrets which eventually lead to what really happened to Ginny. Easy, light reading with a strong cast of characters that are hard to forget.

Julia’s mother, Jacqueline, asks her to accompany her to exclusive Chipmunk Island to attend a memorial service for an old friend. Ginny has been declared dead after going missing five years ago, but something at the memorial service seems off to both of the Snowden women, who decide to look into Ginny’s disappearance – and a current-day murder.

I really like this series, was excited to read this book, and was not disappointed. The recurring primary characters feel like old friends by now, but I like that this book gives us more of Jacqueline’s back story, making it a little easier to understand the person she is today. One chapter of Julia’s personal life seems to have closed for good, but at the end of the book, another one opens, which will be interesting to follow as the series progresses.

The mystery here started out with a cold case, but also became a current-day murder investigation further into the book. There were several suspects to consider for both, and I was pleasantly surprised to learn that my suspicions were correct. The motives weren’t obvious until close to the end of the book, but they made sense after all other details were revealed.

Given how this book ended, I hope the series continues, as I want to see how things go from here.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Oh, the joy and anticipation for a new book in a series by a beloved author! I was waiting for the opportunity to read this book ever since I had found out it was going to be published.

Barbara Ross is one of my top favorite author, and she is also my book club’s favorite. Whatever superlative adjectives I was expecting this book to qualify for were far exceeded. Barbara only writes brilliantly, and every single book is exceptional.

This is the 11th. installment in the Maine Clambake Mysteries, which is an “unputdownable” series from the very beginning (Clammed Up). There is such comfort in catching up with Julia Snowden, the protagonist, and the quirky and familiar cast of characters who inhabit Busman Harbor, Maine. In this book we get to sleuth along with Julia in a most intriguing and complex plot, which gets more and more captivating as we read along. We get to know a new set of individuals that are so well described that you can almost touch them.

I was astounded to find out whodunnit, or why. It was all revealed at the end most satisfactorily.

There are delicious recipes included at the end.

The only downside to the book is that it was such a quick read, perhaps because the story had me so hooked that I read it in 3 days, which is a record for me, and now I have to wait for the next book which will be published next year.

I most highly recommend this book, as well as the previous 10 mysteries by Barbara Ross, and the Main Clambake novellas. You will also be hooked from the very start.

Thank you, Barbara Ross, Net Galley and Kensington Books for allowing me to read this book and post an honest review. It was an honor and such a pleasure!

Won in a Goodreads giveaway.

I've been hit and miss reading this series. That may be the reason I found this entry dry. Not much suspense or humor. Julia and her mother,Jacqueline,go to a memorial for an old friend that disappeared five years ago and was just declared legally dead. Jacqueline is surprised at being named executor of Ginny's estate. It is slow going as Julia and Jacqueline clear out Ginny's house. Things do pick up after there is a murder on the island. The book is well written but I found myself reading fast as I became bored.

A 5 star for me as it kept me up at night to see what would happen.

I loved the different setting of a private community on an island. This along with some characters that were hard to trust mads it fun. There are three levels of mystery so it keeps you guessing.

This book serves as one leading to changes, nothing wrong there. The theme of changing times, what to keep, and what to let go of plays well.

Hidden Beneath is the 11th book in the Maine Clambake Mystery series. I have enjoyed this series and this book was another enjoyable entry. This book once again has Julia Snowden and her mother investigating a cold case when an old friend that disappeared 5 years ago is declared dead. Jacqueline’s old friend Ginny, disappeared while on her regular morning swim and her body was never discovered. When the will is read, Jacqueline is shocked that Ginny made her the executor of her estate as the other ladies that summered on Chipmunk Island were much closer than they were. While going through the house and apartment to deal with bequests, the find information that leads them to believe that the Wednesday Club ladies might know more than they are telling. Does Ginny's disappearance have anything to do with a death years before? When one of the Wednesday Club members dies in a suspicious way, Julia knows she needs to find a killer before there are more deaths.

I always enjoy visiting Busman's Harbor with the Snowdens and their friends and employees. This one didn't have as much family or townsfolk in the story as I like, but it was still and enjoyable mystery. As with all the books in this series, there are several side stories going on as well as the main mystery. Chris and Julia split up a couple of books ago, but there is still a lingering storyline there with some feelings that won't go away. Julia is beginning to open up to a new romance, and I like the idea of a new man for her. There is also an offer to purchase the island where the clambake and house that they renovated are. Will Jacqueline sell the island? The mystery itself was quite complicated and twisty with issues from the past coming into play. I love the way Julia gathers clues and puts things together to solve the mysteries. Working with her mother this time gives her someone to bounce ideas off and help her put the puzzle together. Overall this was a bit lighter of a mystery than some of the others, but I enjoyed it and recommend it to those who enjoy an interesting cozy mystery.

Hidden Beneath is the eleventh installment in the A Maine Clambake Mystery series set in Busman's Harbor, ME and featuring Julia Snowden, part owner of Snowden Family Clambake. Julia's mother Jacqueline learns that her high school best friend, Ginny Merrill has been declared dead after going missing 5 years earlier on a swim around the harbor.

The memorial service brings the ladies to neighboring Chipmunk Island where Ginny had spent her summers growing up with the ladies of the Wednesday Club. Jacqueline has only spoken to Ginny once in the past 45 years so she's surprised to learn that Ginny named her as the executor of her estate. Julia and her mother become suspicious that Ginny didn't have an accident, and as they go through her home to clean out Ginny's possessions, Julia discovers the woman's journals. Ginny's writings combined with a mysterious phone call that Ginny had made to Jacqueline a few weeks before her death seem to point at murder.

Julia finds herself teaming up with her ex Chris who has been living on the island as the Winter Superintendent and Sergeant Tom Flynn. The trio not only solve the mystery of what really happened to Ginny but also tie up another decades old Chipmunk murder.

The perfect setting, mouthwatering meals and a returning cast of characters make for an enjoyable afternoon read. It's always nice to catch up with Julia and watch as her family and their lives continue to evolve.

Thank you, NetGalley and Kensington Books, for the Advanced Readers Copy of Hidden Beneath (Maine Clambake Mystery, #11) by Barbara Ross in exchange for my honest review. I first became familiar with this series and author while reading a collection of short stories that included one from the Maine Clambake Mystery series. I was excited when I was approved to read this newest book and was not disappointed.

This newest edition can be read as a stand alone as the author does a fantastic job of recapping the backstories of the characters from previous books in the series. I found all the main characters to be incredibly likable. With that being said, I didn't care for most of the supporting characters that were friends with Ginny. They seemed very cliquey, which is something I don't expect of grown women, let alone ones in their sixties.

The story was entertaining, and I enjoyed the fact that there were two or three of different mysteries that were presented in the book. Trying to figure out the connection between them was fun. However, it did seem to take a bit too long to find out how it all connected together, but the story ended with a bang, which more than made up for any slow parts. I had no clue as to the identity of the murderer, so that was a pleasant surprise.

Five out of five stars is what I gave Hidden Beneath (Maine Clambake Mystery, #11) by Barbara Ross. The expected publication for this book is June 27, 2023. I have a long wait for the twelve book in the series, so I'll tide myself over by reading the books that came before this one.

Julia and her mom don’t always see eye-to-eye; they have their ups and downs, as all parent/child relationships go. But when Julia’s mom, Jacqueline, springs a day trip to Chipmuck Island for the memorial service of an old friend, Julia can’t help but think maybe her mother has a lot more going on in her life than she knew. When the memorial turns into a murder investigation, and a body turns up, Julia has no choice but to help her mother find a killer.

The characters in this series are always fun to spend a few hours with. Busman's Harbor invigorates and makes readers wish they lived in such a beautiful place. Secrets run throughout this story, with many of the characters trying to keep those secrets tucked away. Julia and Jacqueline find themselves in the middle of something they hadn’t expected, with twists and turns that few will see coming. Suspects that make us question those we thought we knew, and a killer reveal that will leave many readers shocked.

The writing, as always, was top-notch, while the plot and subplots held readers' fascination until the very last page. I enjoyed this read and look forward to the next book in the series.

In Hidden Beneath, old secrets rise to the surface about Julia’s mother’s friend who disappeared five years ago. As Julia and Jacqueline help with clearing out the missing woman’s house, they discover fantastic paintings on the walls of her home - paintings that include long-buried secrets that someone is willing to kill for.

A Maine Clambake Mystery Series is one of my all time favorite series. Maine is my favorite place in the world - I would live there if I could. As I read these books, I feel as if I am in Maine, my happy place. I can almost smell the sea air, hear the waves pounding the shoreline, and I always end up craving lobster rolls! The characters are complex, and the author is not afraid to put them through the wringer.

Barbara Ross books are an auto-buy for me, and I’m always happy to leave my honest opinion about her books.

As an avid fan of the Maine Clambake mysteries, I couldn't wait to dig into this! This was slightly different than the others in the series as it involves a cold case and takes place on an island across the water from Busman's Harbor. I enjoyed the mystery, though it was slow going at times. A lot of the regular characters were mentioned here or there, but took more of a backseat in this one. Barbara Ross focused on Julia and her growth in this entry and I felt myself more drawn to that than the mystery. While this wasn't my favorite in the series, its a great mystery and has me looking forward to what happens next in Julia's life!
