The Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, better known by the pen name Lewis Carroll, was an English author, mathematician, logician, Anglican clergyman and photographer.

His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and its sequel Through the Looking-Glass as well as the poems "The Hunting of the Snark" and "Jabberwocky", all considered to be within the genre of literary nonsense.

Oxford scholar, Church of England Deacon, University Lecturer in Mathematics and Logic, academic author of learned theses, gifted pioneer of portrait photography, colourful writer of imaginative genius and yet a shy and pedantic man, Lewis Carroll stands pre-eminent in the pantheon of inventive literary geniuses.

He also has works published under his real name.

I smiled ear to ear throughout the time I read this book and I felt like an utter idiot. I love the way Carroll writes, like a sweetly admonishing adult overseeing your homework but he does not patronize the reader, perhaps he does ever so slightly, but you sort of feel like playing along with it. The concepts of logic are pretty rudimentary but it is the charming narrative that makes this book just wonderful.

In my edition, the introduction added in later times is 15% of the book and I missed the part where it actually... talks about the book :(. So I would just skip that part the next time.
The book itself is quite charming, introducing very basic logic through a game.
This site has a nice representation of the diagrams used in the book:

Great book, but the Kindle edition is worthless. The formatting is awful and you don't get the board (and other important information). Went and found it on Project Gutenberg (public domain) and had a great time with it.

I would have given this book zero stars if it was possible. For something with Logic in the title this was the most confusing book that I have ever read with all its x could be y but x could also not be y. I couldn't make head nor tail of this and didn't enjoy it at all...

Not a bad introduction into the study of logic for the complete outsider. However, I can't quite esteem the worthy of his diagrams for I'm sure the digital version I've read didn't render them properly. Still, his wit alone makes this an interesting fun read even for the more experienced logician.

🔔The Game of Logic
Little Birds are dining
Warily and well,
Hid in mossy cell:
Hid, I say, by waiters
Gorgeous in their gaiters -
I've a Tale to tell.

Little Birds are feeding
Justices with jam,
Rich in frizzled ham:
Rich, I say, in oysters
Haunting shady cloisters -
That is what I am.

Little Birds are teaching
Tigresses to smile,
Innocent of guile:
Smile, I say, not smirkle -
Mouth a semicircle,
That's the proper style!

Little Birds are sleeping
All among the pins,
Where the loser wins:
Where, I say, he sneezes
When and how he pleases -
So the Tale begins.

Little Birds are writing
Interesting books,
To be read by cooks:
Read, I say, not roasted -
Letterpress, when toasted,
Loses its good looks.

Little Birds are playing
Bagpipes on the shore,
Where the tourists snore:
"Thanks!" they cry. "'Tis thrilling!
Take, oh take this shilling!
Let us have no more!"

Little Birds are bathing
Crocodiles in cream,
Like a happy dream:
Like, but not so lasting -
Crocodiles, when fasting,
Are not all they seem!

Little Birds are choking
Baronets with bun,
Taught to fire a gun:
Taught, I say, to splinter
Salmon in the winter -
Merely for the fun.

Little Birds are hiding
Crimes in carpet-bags,
Blessed by happy stags:
Blessed, I say, though beaten -
Since our friends are eaten
When the memory flags.

Little Birds are tasting
Gratitude and gold,
Pale with sudden cold:
Pale, I say, and wrinkled -
When the bells have tinkled,
And the Tale is told

I read the Kindle version of this book. It's basically a total loss. Many, many times when things are put out in the public domain form whoever puts them out leaves out pictures, diagrams and so on. In this case the diagrams are absolutely necessary in order to get anything out of this book. The method that is actually used is terribly confusing and totally distracting.

I did detect some Lewis Carroll humor but it wasn't enough to save this version.(The version I read was the digital version.)

The understanding of the logic of game and how to solve them is very intriguing for me. Logic is probably the way to go since it is the backbone of how we make decisions and pick a choice. To master how a game of logic is played, is definitely the way. Even when the premises are there, we still fall to this empty fallacy.

However the content is rather repetitive and not challenging which understandable for a book made in the 1969. Nothing really worthy to be read here.

Totalmente recomendado.

Basic introduction to logic. I'd recommend instead that you spend time learning Venn diagrams - those are more elegant than his method. Also pick up The Art of thinking clearly to understand fallacies more contextually.

My only criticisim of this version is the way diagrams are shown, it makes it difficult to follow (make sure to pull the diagrams from the web if you read this version)
This would've been a nice book to read in school. Is actually fun.

I learnt nothing. Interesting visual approach to logical thinking.
Half the book is exercises which would be useful for people who don't have natural logical thinking.

As an excursion into classical logic and introduction to it's place in rational argument this was fantastic. It gives clear explanation to the terminology used and as clearly as possible explains the material under study.

If you come ready to be challenged and keen to learn you cannot help but benefit, however readers be warned those who come expecting a nice easy read will not be able to make the most of the text.

This book is heavily reliant on the illustrations, not automatically a bad thing but in the kindle edition I got most the diagrams were a garbled mess. This was an excellent read but ensure you get a version with fixed diagrams and keep a pen and paper handy.

I struggled with this book on the ,especially the more complex arguments because it didn't come with illustrations but line diagrams using ASCII characters that didn't format properly. This hindered understanding a great deal. I wouldn't bother with it unless you can get a fully illustrated edition.

Livre prise de tête.... Tête plein de confusion à la lecture. *_*
