Reclaiming the art of Scripture memorization Bible memory has fallen on hard times. It can feel unnecessary since we have Scripture at our fingertips. Or it just feels daunting and unattainable—you know it’s important, but you’re just not good at it. Writer, mother, and lover of Scripture Glenna Marshall shows us that to love God with our hearts, we must first love him with our minds. Through Scripture memorization, we begin to meditate on God’s word. This causes us to think deeply about God, which leads to intimacy and trust. Scripture memory bolsters our daily faith, grows us in discernment, and gives us courage to walk through trials. It arms us with what we need to share the gospel, to fight sin, and to encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ! But how and where do we begin? Glenna gives us practical tools! Even long passages or books of the Bible can be hidden in our hearts with small, doable, daily bites. You’ll look at how to memorize Scripture in Bible study groups or local church settings as well as with children and friends. Scripture memorization is the path we travel to obey God’s command to meditate on His Word. You will be transformed as the Bible takes root in your heart. The more we know His Word, the more we will—with the help of the Holy Spirit—be shaped like Jesus. You can do this! Memorizing Scripture shows you how!
Glenna Marshall is married to her pastor, William, and lives in rural Southeast Missouri where she tries and fails to keep up with her two energetic sons. She is the author of The Promise is His Presence: Why God is Always Enough (P&R, 2019) and Everyday Faithfulness: The Beauty of Ordinary Perseverance in a Demanding World (Crossway, 2020).
This book was such a great one to read starting off the new year!
Glenna provides great tools and methods to implement that can easily be incorporated into our daily lives. She includes the importance of the what, how, and why of memorizing Scripture, but also the benefits we get when we spend time pondering on God’s Word. I loved that she incorporated her own story, making it feel more relatable.
I personally struggle at times to recall/memorize Scripture, and I found this one to be encouraging and motivated me to meditate deeper on God’s Word, I highly recommend it!
Thank you so much, @tiffanyreads_, for recommending this book!💛
This book was so timely and just completely blessed my socks off and was so encouraging and motivating. The way that Glenna weaves her story and also charges her readers to implement Scripture into our hearts in such a beautiful way. I am so encouraged by this book and feel the importance of WHY to memorize scripture and very clearly know HOW. Now, it's just up to me!
Thank you Moody Publishers for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
I never would have guessed this book would be so impactful. I’ve seen this book on other Bookstagram’s and honestly thought, “how much can be written about memorizing scripture?” Turns out, a lot.
What I loved 💗: Long story short - chapter 6 and 8. This book is an incredible resource for both walking through suffering and helping a friend through suffering. If you buy this book, and read only chapter 8, it would be worth it!
What I didn’t love: Nothing! This book will change you. It is one I will highly recommended to everyone!
Favorite quotes:
“Knowing His word, recognizing His voice, and exulting in our belonging to Christ helps us discern what is true in a world that calls everything ‘truth’.”
“It takes presence in relationship and persistence in scripture meditation to rightly use God’s word to comfort someone who is suffering.”
“It’s through memorization that we meditate, and it’s through meditation that we memorize.”
Thank you @moodypublishers for the copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
There are books that I read and think, “Oh, this may be something that my girls will enjoy when they get older” and then there is this book that I read and thought, “I need to buy three copies now so that when my girls are older they each have their own copy to read (and maybe I should make it required reading for graduating homeschool 😅).
Early on in Chapter One (Know His Voice), Glenna writes:
“We already know from Jesus that God’s Word is truth. His Word is also honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and praiseworthy. We can and must think on these truths—God’s truths—and by them measure all that we see touted, advertised, and celebrated as true from the world. We will be able to discern what is truly true by meditating on what is eternally true.”
Moreover, Glenna goes on to say that “when the words of the Lord live in your heart, they change your heart.” And later in Chapter Two (You Can Memorize Scripture), she reminds us that “the point of memorization is to grow in our love for Christ, to be able to recall His commandments and exhortations, to know what it means to follow Him, to have the language for encouragement or gospel sharing, and to be equipped to say no to sin and temptation.”
Memorizing Scripture is more than a book that you read, it is a book that teaches you the blessings and benefits of meditating on God’s Word and then equips you with the methods and tools of how to store God’s Word in your heart.
If you are a believer and have yet to read this book, add it to the top of your TBR now! It is a must-read regardless of where you are in your walk with the Lord and one that I believe will bless you, encourage you, and equip you!
✨Thank you, Moody Publishers, for my copy of Memorizing Scripture in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Memorizing Scripture is not simply a book of memorization tips. Glenna Marshall shows us how memorization and meditation are intertwined, and how they naturally lead to intimacy with our Creator. She encourages us toward that intimacy with examples of how the discipline is a blessing and a benefit to our walk with Christ.
I’ve been wanting to get back into memorizing scripture, and Glenna’s book is exactly what I needed to inspire me to DO IT.
“When the words of the Lord live in your heart, they change your heart.”
“The more you give your mind to the Word, the more easily you will walk away from the fleeting, soul-numbing pleasures of this world.”
An incredible resource. Encouraging, soaked in Scripture, and insanely practical. I can't wait to implement some of these ideas in my life, all with the goal of cherishing the Word and knowing God more.
I'm not great at writing reviews but I've upgraded my rating from 4 to 5 stars because I can't stop thinking about this book. I have been so impacted by this book as it has pushed me closer to God and wanting to spend time in His Word. I always thought I could never memorise bigger parts of Scripture but Glenna helpfully reminds us that it's not the end goal of being able to recite a passage word for word to win some sort of prize (I did win the Scripture Cup in GB one year though 💪🏻) but it's about how the time spent immersed in God's Word memorising and studying and reading it over and over changes you and grows your love for God and your hate of sin. That's what it's about. And the being able to call to mind Scripture in time of need by the help of the Holy Spirit. I'm so excited to get stuck into memorising Scripture and recommend this book as a great tool for anyone wondering where to start ☺️
We no longer have to memorize phone numbers, because they’re conveniently stored on the device that lives in our pocket. We don’t need to remember directions because that little gadget also tells us how to get there. We’ve got important dates saved on our calendars, reminders to send us notifications to do things.
There’s not much we truly need to commit to memory anymore, and I wonder if that’s part of the reason we neglect the discipline of Scripture memory. Google searches at our fingertips make finding information, even verses accessible for every moment.
In Memorizing Scripture: The Basics, Blessings and Benefits of Meditating on God’s Word by Glenna Marshall she encourages us back to a discipline that benefits our love and our life.
Glenna writes this book because she couldn’t stop telling people how memorizing the Word changed her life. She wants you to experience the same. She helps us understand how Scripture memorization influences the way we think and live, moving knowledge from our mind to our hearts.
Her easygoing style invites you to indulge in a spiritual discipline that’s recognized as important but probably less practiced. She provides a comprehensive look at why we memorize and how-to. Each chapter ends with a memorization tip and some suggested passages for memorizing. You’ll also find a great collection of resources for scripture memory as an appendix at the end, including apps, music, cards and more.
This was a really enjoyable and challenging read. As much as we don’t like to hear one more thing we “should” be doing as Christians, the discipline of memorizing Scripture is pivotal for our spiritual growth and sanctification. There’s programs for the kids - whether it’s in Sunday school or Awana, but we don’t find that as much in our adult years.
If you’re struggling with a specific sin, equip yourself with God’s Word. If you’re suffering, commit his truth to memory when you feel weak and in pain. If you’re doing a bible study, get those passages deeply embedded in your mind.
Let’s know God that we may love him more too.
Grab this resource, it’s a must-read for your shelf!
This book is a new release I was looking forward to and it did not disappoint! Not only does it give wonderful ideas of how we can memorize Scripture, but the author does a beautiful job of showing the reader why it is a wonderful and important means of grace. She addresses all the ways it helps us as believers through our suffering, renewing our minds, our sanctification, our ability to encourage and exhort fellow believers, and also how it helps us in evangelism! These are just to name a few. I appreciated her exhortation and encouragement to readers, that memorization is something that can be done even if you struggle with memory. It can be a slow process, but is so important for the believer. She gives tips along with ideas on how to make meditating on God’s Word apart of your daily routine and how to fit it into a busy life.
Scripture memory has always been something that was hard for me in the past. I have definitely noticed such a difference though as I have learned what methods work best for me with memorization. It has also been a great tool in sharing Scripture on the go with my son and reminding us of God's Word throughout the day! I recommend this book to every Christian whether you are struggling with memorizing Scripture or it is something you do regularly. It is an edifying read. I especially liked her section on suffering and how Scripture memory helps us in our suffering (or to prepare us for suffering) as we are reminded of God's character. If you haven't read it yet, go check it out!
Thank you @moodypublishers for a copy of this book for my honest review!
“I’ve always been a competitive person, even as a child. I always wanted to win. I always wanted to be the best. And this manifested itself in many areas of my life—in my schoolwork, in playing games with family and friends, and in memorizing Scripture.
I grew up going to church every Sunday, and our children’s ministry did weekly Scripture memory challenges. There was a different verse each week, and if you recited the verse to your Sunday School teacher, you could pick a small candy or prize from a treasure box. Then, if you recited a certain number of verses throughout the year, you could win a special trophy to commemorate the achievement. Like I said, I was a competitive child who was very reward-motivated, so I did my best to memorize as many Bible verses as I possibly could so I could get a lot of treasure box prizes and eventually earn a nice, big trophy at the end of the year (and I succeeded at this for multiple years).
While I am thankful to have gone to a church that prioritized children learning and memorizing Scripture (there are some verses I memorized as a child that I can still remember today!), I’m afraid this method of rewarding the quantity of verses recited gave me and likely many other children the wrong impression of the purpose of Scripture memorization. As Glenna Marshall writes in her new book, memorizing Scripture is about more than information or recitation…”
To love God with all of one's heart and soul we must love Him with our whole mind. This can be attained by knowing and loving His World. Being daily inundated with it and allowing the Holy Spirit to let it work in our hearts and mind. Meditating and memorizing Scripture will build our initmacy and trust with the One who created us. This book was so convicting and such an ecouragement to get back at memorizing His word. Another book I will recommend to everyone!
It's a practical and doable look at how you can memorize Scripture. So refreshing and encouraging as Marshall breaks it down and shows how it can be done. She lays out daily practices and habits that built over time will lay a rewarding path. Simples examples like phone apps that aide in memorizing, or techniques in writing out words. Not only is it commanded in Scripture but it's doable!
Okay I'll start here - this is my favorite Christian non-fiction of 2023!
Yes!
Similar to her book, Everyday Faithfulness, Glenna has this *it* factor to her writing - I don't know what it is, but her books are readable, relatable, encouraging and convicting. I can't put them down or get them out of my head or heart! The topic of memorizing scripture can be loaded with all sorts of feelings and/or memories, depending on your background. For me, I didn't have a compelling experience memorizing scripture for school - the verses were odd choices and completely out of context. I just did not really see the point and never picked up the practice after high-school.
Well.
Cue Glenna convincing me that I have been missing out! I am so inspired to dedicate time and energy to memorizing the Word of God. I've downloaded Fighter Verses, which is listed in the back of her book as a resource, and is a ministry of @truth78. We've been memorizing as a family and having so much fun!
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Read it! Treat yourself! You will not be disappointed. Thank you, Glenna!
Thank you to the lovely Moody Publishers for gifting me a review copy. All opinions are my own.
Marshall has written a fantastic resource!! I've been wanting to be intentional about developing a practice of memorizing Scripture, and 2024 seemed a great time to get serious about that goal. It's overwhelming to figure out a starting point and a method, much more so with my own cognitive issues (thank you autoimmune disease). After reading this, I feel so encouraged and far less daunted.
This book provides several methods for how to start memorizing and suggestions for passages to focus on when beginning this discipline. Marshall goes on to devote several chapters as to why memorization is beneficial for our walk with God, also ensuring to tackle legalism early on in the text.
I have nothing but praise for this book- unusual for me! I highly recommend it and will be looking into other books from the author.
Format: Physical book, owned Rating: 5 stars Book 9 of 2024
Be prepared to receive a copy of this book for Christmas! It was that good!
I have been motivated to memorize more scripture and have been actively working towards this ever since a Susan Heck conference 2 years ago. She has the NT down and many Psalms, etc. I was not only impressed by her ability to never have to physically read a verse, I was convicted by how little I had memorized. Even the verses I could recite, I often forgot the reference or couldn’t remember the context. Since then I have made a personal goal to memorize a book or a few chapters each year. Large portions. Basically “be memorizing something” at all times is my motto. I started with Colossians because I already had chapter 3. Then I moved to Philippians. There are some great resources for Philippians on Spotify including Abby Houston’s album “melodically memorizing Philippians” and the verses project has 3 great songs inspired by Philippians 4. If anyone is motivated to start a book, I’d recommend Philippians! It’s been so encouraging and helpful when I am tempted to be depressed. Anyways…back to the book.
This book was a great reminder of why I’m doing this, how valuable His Word is and practical advice on the how-to aspect. Some of these tips I was already doing, but some are new. This is a great read for those who are newbies to diligently memorizing and I hope to share this book with my kids when they are older. They are already memorizing quite a bit too, but when they are older they may need inspiration to do still more and not just because mom, dad or the church told them to. I pray to be the old gray-haired lady from church that is ready for an opportunity to share the Word with those who do not know Christ or to believers who need encouragement. The book touches on how God’s Word is profitable for salvation, sanctification, evangelism, fighting sin and despondency, and most importantly, to love God more!
Highly recommend! I’ve read a few books and articles on memorizing scripture and this one is my favorite by far. Not only does she give practical ways on how to memorize scripture she also emphasizes that memorizing scripture is for loving God more. And she also write through some of the amazing benefits of memorizing Scripture (but that the purpose is not for the benefits but to love God more).
It’s a purposely slow process in which we are hiding God’s word in our hearts and God will shape us more and more in our love for him and our likeness of his Son Jesus.
This was such a great book to kick off the year. Glenna gives great tips and tricks on how to memorize scripture. She also goes through reasons why to memorize scripture. Reasons like: to love your God, to hate your sin, to remain steadfast, and to renew your mind. It was such a practical read. Definitely one of my favourites so far this year. I personally struggle to memorize scripture, but I really felt encouraged and motivated to give it a go.
This book is a must have for any Christian. I hope you check it!
Glenna Marshall reclaims the lost art of Bible memory, emphasizing its significance in deepening our relationship with God. Through practical guidance and encouragement, she demonstrates how Scripture memorization fosters intimacy, bolsters faith, and equips believers to share the gospel. With accessible methods, even complex passages become manageable, facilitating transformation as God’s Word takes root in the heart.
Convicting + encouraging + transforming. I’ve memorized Scripture before, but never as a tool to become more aware of God’s love for me. When I was in middle school I memorized the book of James because there was no way I was loosing the Bible Bowl 🤪 My freshman year of college a professor organized a group of us to memorize different chapters in the book of Mark to present them as the sermon in a Holy Week chapel service. And this past year I have been working on memorizing Ephesians to help in sermon prep/presentation. But this book completely broke down the true underlying benefits of putting God’s Word in our hearts. The author’s honestly was empowering as she described how it has helped her identify and resist sin, more deeply understand God’s love for her, and use it to impact others.
Thank you so much @moodypublishers for the free book. What a special resource 🥰
Perfect for you if you like: “How to” for spiritual disciplines Explanation of the value of Scripture Narratives that demonstrate spiritual resilience
Similar to: The Practice of the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence Sacred Rhythms by Ruth Haley Barton Literarily by Kristie Anyabwile
Memorizing Scripture by Glenna Marshall is a guide that shares the how AND why we dedicate ourselves to the memorization of Scripture. I honestly was just so encouraged reading her own experience of how this discipline has shaped her life that I couldn’t help but immediately want to freshen up on this practice in my own life.
This book is for you if: •You want to grow in this spiritual discipline •You feel stuck in your walk with the Lord •You feel like you don’t have the ability to memorize well, nor the time to add “one more thing” to your schedule •You want to be reminded of the many ways God’s Word is life-giving for the Christian
I loved all of it, but I especially appreciated the practical tips and suggested verses at the end of each chapter. If you’re a beginner to Bible memorization, the author takes the intimidation out of starting. For what it’s worth, this book is also fairly short (~150 pages), so it’s great it you don’t have a lot of margin time to read.
Incredible resource! Will come back to this for encouragement often. Her writing was easy to read, humble and full of truth.
A few of many favorite quotes:
“We never study God simply to acquire knowledge, and we don’t memorize Scripture simply to be able to recite it. No, bedrock of both study and meditation is relationship. We study and meditate on God’s word in order to know and love God better.”
“Scripture memory won’t end your suffering, but it can sustain you through it.”
“Knowing His word, recognizing His voice, exulting in our belonging to Christ helps us discern what is a true in a world that calls everything truth.”
“Because we are habitually forgetful, we will be tempted to diminish aspects of His character when our circumstances loom large with suffering or difficulty. We’ll forget that He loves us when we are lonely or sad. We’ll begin to believe lies about God and ourselves when temptation draws our hearts away from Him. We need regular, persistent reminders of God and his character to discern what is true.”
While I loved the practical tips included in this book on how to memorize scripture as they are very helpful, I think the best part of this book to me is the why. As she says “Scripture is no empty word. It is your very life”. I was encouraged to dwell on the word of God because it is the very way God changes our minds. I was encouraged because by the word of God, God works so much good into our lives. I ended this book encouraged to print off a chapter of scripture and hang it up somewhere I can see it all the time, just as she says she hopes you will be at the end.
This book was INCREDIBLE. The writing was clear and profound and it never came from an argument that “you should memorize Scripture because it will make God love you more,” which I was a little worried about before starting. She provides applicable strategies for memorizing Scripture, but spends much more time developing an argument for why you should want to.
Loved all of it. No notes!
“Scripture is no empty word. It is your very life. When it is in your mouth and before your eyes and in your heart, the Lord will use it to remind you of who He is, who you are, and how deeply and utterly loved you are.”
127 highlights. If that doesn’t prove how much I loved this encouraging and convicting book, I don’t know what will. It’s full of advice on how to train your brain to memorize and hide God’s Word in your heart. I have never desired to memorize whole chapters, much less whole books of the Bible but now I will be slowly working towards that goal. I’ll definitely be referring the highlights any time I am stagnant in the spiritual discipline of Scripture memorization. Glenna frequently reiterated memorization isn’t just for a party trick but to abide, meditate, and be transformed by God’s living and active Word. Highly recommend to all!
Really enjoyed this book! Short, easy, practical read. I am looking forward to applying some of the principles from this book to my life :) Kinda want my d-group to read it!
Really loved hearing the author’s personal experiences with scripture memory and how it has helped her through seasons of her life.
This is the third Glenna Marshall book I’ve read, and I just love her style. Down to earth and practical but also straightforward truth that convicts. I think this had a nice balance of providing tips for how to memorize while focusing on the benefits of memorizing. I intend to start putting this into practice soon — hopefully alongside some of my book club buddies 😄
3.5 ⭐️ I want to dive deep into memorizing some longer passages of scripture this summer and I find reading a book about someone else doing this is inspiring & gets me motivated! She gives practical tips, focuses a lot on the WHY & I left feeling excited to memorize God’s word.
Memorizing scripture is something that has ebbed and flowed throughout my life, something very inconsistent. It’s been my desire to make it habitual in my daily life. This book came at the right time to prod me to make this priority. Glenna Marshall not only shows ways to memorize verses, but also points to how meditating on God’s word draws us into a deeper intimacy with him. It’s much more than a how to book. I highly recommend.
