Random letters belong on Scrabble tiles, not dead bodies. But when a demented serial killer targets Boston’s gay population, leaving cryptic messages carved into his victims, lead detective Gary Mitchell has no choice but to play along.
As the body count rises, Gary gets desperate enough to push aside his skepticism and accept the help of a psychic. Dan Porter says he can offer new clues, and Gary needs all the insight into the killer’s mind he can get.
Dan has lived with his gift–sometimes his curse–his entire life. He feels compelled to help, but only if he can keep his involvement secret. Experience has taught him to be cautious of the police and the press, but his growing connection to Gary distracts him from the real danger. As they edge closer to solving the puzzle, Dan finds himself in the killer’s sights….
K.C. Wells lives on an island off the south coast of the UK, surrounded by natural beauty. She writes about men who love men, and can’t even contemplate a life that doesn’t include writing. first off, gary? unsexy mc name if you ask me, which no one did. all due respect to the garys of the world, i do believe the only hot one to ever exist was young gary oldman. (gary youngman? *comic rimshot*)
this book had a slow start—i kept waiting for it to pull me in and hook me, but it never did. was it steaming hot dumpster garbage? no, but there are definitely a lot of other mm mystery books out there with the same exact premise that just did it better.
lewis' character was ott, he was pretty much a caricature of your typical bigoted asshole. he was overly obnoxious and unprofessional, and the real mystery of this story is how he got his job in the first place.
imo, the constant interjections of oh my god, holy fuck, christ, etc. gave all of the middle-aged, seasoned police officers in this story an aura of unprofessionalism and immaturity. i understand that the events occurring were troubling, but them reacting to the serial killer's corny and lame scare tactics (spelling out s-e-r-i-a-l-k-i-l-l-e-r and writing "ha ha ha" on victims were not the gags the killer seemed to think they were) in such horror made them come off as... how do i say this politely... little bitches 😭
even if his name wasn't the most hearthrob-by (not his fault the author his parents did him dirty!), gary could've easily made up for it by having a likeable and interesting personality; but alas, he was pretty unremarkable. and, at the risk of sounding bitchy—bc, to be fair, two people close to him did die—he came off as a bit wishy washy as well.
same with dan tbh. during a scene where he channels his psychic powers to help find the killer only to get completely drained after finding out the tiniest piece of information, all i could picture was him as the victoria's secret karen:
there's nothing wrong with fleshing out the plot (if it's interesting, that is), but bc the majority of the time was spent on the investigating process, i was never able to feel a true connection between the MCs. when they got together so passionately halfway through the story, i was inwardly rolling my eyes bc there'd been zero development. it kinda felt like dan's prophetic vision of them having sex (💀) forced them together. i think it would've felt more authentic if dan had waited to tell gary about the dream until after it came true, rather than dan telling him being what ultimately brought them together.
others may very well enjoy this, but i've had it on hold for weeks now and seeing how much is still left, i simply can't be bothered to finish it. maybe my patience has just been thin lately. maybe i've read too many mm mysteries and my expectations were too high. either way... this was a miss.
I've got to admit defeat and stop torturing myself. It's not a bad book or a badly written one, it just really really isn't for me.
The premise is interesting, a serial killer possibly somehow linked to the main detective (a hunch of mine) Gary, and a psychic Dan joining the police force that is desperate to catch the killer.
The thing is...it's a fated mates/soulmates situation and I hate that. Dan has had visions/dreams for more than ten years of a guy fucking him (you heard that right) and right away, after meeting Gary for the first time, he knows he's that guy. And lo' and behold, Gary is also insanely attracted to Dan. Come on, where is the tension, the building anticipation? I'll tell you; it was never on the set. I just couldn't bother to continue, I was kind of curious about the killer (we even got some chapters from their point of view and I liked that) but the romance? Cringe AF. The connection felt very artificial and surface-level, although it's portrayed as something deep and strong, it's just words with no emotion to back it up. I had to stop right after Dan told Gary about his visions and Gary was like Well let's make that a reality and I was just 😖😖 byyye
I didn't even know what the main characters looked like till maybe 70 pages in so the descriptions are lacking, to say the least. Also, I don't know why but the characters felt way younger than their late thirties...
(...and while reading this, all I could think about was "I'd rather read about Malcolm and Seong-Jae" so I'm gonna listen to myself and treat myself because ✨self-care✨)
Creepy murderer, horrific details, a psychic helping the police, and two sweet men falling for each other? Yes, please.
This romantic suspense was definitely heavier on the suspense than the romance, but I didn’t mind one bit. My first K.C. Wells book, and I really enjoyed the writing. I usually avoid series that follow the same couple, but I really wanted to read this one. Not sure I’ll read the next one, simply because of that. The romance aspect might pick up more in the next book too, if that’s more your speed. Who knows.
Recommend it if you don’t mind kinda awful murdery stuff. Personally, I love it.
I know this book has been a long-time coming and it was worth the wait. KC Wells crafted a mystery that kept me guessing along with the team even when I thought I had some things figured out. There are some plot twists I didn't see coming, two very likable MCs and plenty of tension. One scene, in particular, made my stomach drop, knowing what was going to happen and knowing it couldn't be stopped.
It's told in dual POV and we also get a few glimpses into the mind of the killer which I always appreciate in a serial killer story. Gary is driven in his job for his own reasons and this particular string of murders is baffling his team as the killer is seemingly becoming bolder and leaving little evidence for them other than what he wants them to see. While Dan has helped out other police departments in the past with success, he prefers to stay out of the spotlight and isn't bothered by those who doubt him. He just wants to help when he is asked. I adored his character and he and Gary fit well together both professionally and, later, personally. As their romance starts to heat up, and Dan starts to get a feel for the killer's motive, they are placed on a collision course that could end in tragedy.
In His Sights is at first a solid murder mystery with a slow-burn romance brewing underneath. The chemistry is good and Gary's acceptance of his feelings without games is refreshing. While the main mystery is completed here, and Gary and Dan are happy and looking to move forward, there is an overarching arc that remains open and at least two more books to come. I'll be looking forward to the next one.
A half star off for just kinda throwing the killer at us without us being able to figure it out on our own. Other than that this was an excellent story! I loved both main characters and it had several good supporting characters. Also, a particular slimy character did get a comeuppance at the end! I’ll definitely continue with this series! 4.5 stars rounded to five!
Absolutely gripping! "In His Sights" is a very different book from what I'm used to with K.C. Wells, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this different brand of story (less steam, zero BDSM, and more angst, mystery and dark themes) and how much I adored the writing. I was hooked from the very start: the characters and the romance were both wonderful, and the mystery kept me guessing up until the very end.
The case at the centre of this book is very, very tough, so definitely heed the trigger warnings before embarking on this read. "In His Sights" is a murder mystery with a paranormal twist, while the romance that slowly develops between its two leads is secondary, but still very present. Detective Gary Mitchell and his team are trying their best to figure out who's behind a series of gruesome and violent deaths in Boston, targeting its gay population, when their department is forced to accept a helping hand by a mysterious psychic, with his own painful past, Dan Porter.
Gary and Dan immediately click: both leads are very very likable, and their slowly-developing romance is pretty much the cutest thing. I loved them together, and I really cannot wait to see where it will lead them in their next cases together. I also adored all the side characters: I admit, Anyway, I found them all very intriguing, and I wonder if any of them will have their shot at a romance in the next book(s).
The story was absolutely gripping, dark and clever and complex, but I also found it very painful to read about at times: there are some graphic scenes, and the killer is absolutely ruthless in his death spree. While the case is wrapped up brilliantly and serial killer reveal had me literally gasping out loud, I still can't help but feel very angry about the case: it's a very unfair and painful story, and I feel like I need a palate cleanser now to recover.
Anyway, I'll definitely be reading the next book. I'm excited to see what else will happen next, between Gary and Dan, and the next case, but I'm also looking forward to maybe getting to know the other characters a bit better.
It’s been a hot minute since I’ve read a K.C. Wells book and I am beyond happy I took a chance on this one! The premise sounded too good to pass up, especially for this mystery, murder loving reader!
There is a serial killer in Boston who targets gay men, leaving them with a carved letter on their lower back. Lead detective Gary Mitchell is stumped. Him and his two detective co-workers are lost as to who this killer is and when one of the victims is too personal for Gary he agrees to his lieutenants idea of bringing in a psychic.
Dan Porter has assisted on cases and has helped find killers before but he keeps a low profile. He comes to Boston to help catch this killer but he is drawn to Gary. I really loved their attraction. Even though this book is mainly focused on the murder/mystery part the blooming attraction and romance was well done.
The book wasn’t perfect, some parts were not in depth enough for me. The case had some twists and turns and I tried guessing the killer but there is also a side twist of sorts that happens. I couldn’t decide whether I liked that or not.
Even though I knew to not expect much romance the build up and tension between Gary and Dan was so perfect that when they do get physical I was hoping for just a tad bit more. It was good but I was slightly disappointed.
This is a series and I am very excited for the second book. I hope it delves into more of Gary’s past loss and shows more relationship development. Gary and Dan had a whirlwind type of relationship in this book so to see them together daily will be nice.
A solid series opener, In His Sights is set in Boston and follows Detective Gary Mitchell and his team as they search for the murderer of a number of gay men in the city. When their boss relays a suggestion from his boss that they should consider bringing on board a psychic who has worked successfully with other police departments, Gary is very sceptical, but when his best friend becomes the killer's latest victim, he has a change of heart. He'll take all the help he can get.
I enjoyed the story, despite some elements of predictability and the rushed ending. I didn't quite buy into the connection between Gary and Dan (the psychic) - this is the first book in a same-couple series, so the author could have taken a little longer to create a more believeable emotional connection between them instead of relying on Dan's 13-years-worth of visions of an unknown man fucking him, and the pull Gary feels towards him from their first meeting (despite his attempts to cling to the belief he's straight). The discussions about exclusivity and getting tested together are kind of integral to the plot, but also seemed to happen way too fast (the morning after their first night together), and while I was pleased Gary doesn't have a major freak-out over being not as straight as he'd thought, he nonetheless accepts it really easily.
That said, I liked this one enough to read the next in the series.
I had the idea for this book a few years ago. In 2022, I finally found time to write it. Except what was to be a standalone thriller suddenly developped into a series... 😂😂😂
What I loved best about writing this book? The plot twists. So please, no spoilers... 😂
In His Sights was a well-crafted murder mystery with a romantic sublot. The characters are likeable and the chemistry between the leads was pretty good. This was written in dual-POV in the 3rd person with some chapters being focusing on the main antagonist's viewpoint which gave the reader a brief glimpse into their mind.
Dan and Gary both carry their own burden - Dan because of his psychic gift and Gary because of his brother's death. The case involving a serial killer terrorizing Boston's gay community was intriguing, well-written with some really good twists and turns. Weirdly enough, as much as I liked Gary and Dan as a couple, I felt their romance was oddly out of tune with the flow and feel of the story. With how nicely the murder mystery was constructed, the romance's like a dissonant chord that stood out. It felt a bit too fast even though it's really not.
Despite some of the criticisms I had, I still enjoyed In His Sights and I am looking forward to the next book.
This would be 4.25 stars out of 5.
I received an ARC of this book and I have chosen to publish my fair and honest review.
Honestly, I still didn't really understand how Dan's "gift" works because it felt a little touch and go, and didn't really help when it needed. But that's me. The relationship felt rather fast too. And I am not a HUGE fan of inserting the murderer's thoughts into the writing, especially with changing POV (the murderer here uses 1st POV while the main characters uses 3rd POV).
BUT, as it involved serial killer story, it was able to lock my attention enough to finish it.
This is NOT a typical KC Wells story. It’s not a romance nor is it full of BDSM/kink. It IS, however as fabulously written as all of her other books!
Detective Gary Mitchell and his team are in the middle of trying to solve a series of murders. All the victims are promiscuous gay men. All were drugged, and a letter was carved into each man’s back.
With most of their leads exhausted and more bodies piling up, Dan Porter, a psychic is brought in to try to assist. While getting to know each other, Dan discovers that Gary is the man he’s had a very vivid, recurring dream about for the last decade. Gary starts feeling things he only ever felt for one other man but, the case comes first.
This mystery was very well written and had me captivated. The romance/relationship was secondary to the mystery and it was FANTASTIC!
I can’t wait to read the next book!
***** POV… third person (although chapters involving the killer were in first person)
Standalone or series… book 1 in series CAN be read as standalone
The author warns about plot twists, but I somehow missed them because all I read was the reveal of who the killer was which was not a twist at all. It was just a reveal. Very confusing…
Read this book, if you are into the good old crime thriller recycled tropes of:
A previously smart character making multiple stupid decisions out of nowhere.
- For example, leaving the safety of a hotel to make an STD appointment because in the middle of a serial killer investigation ditching the condoms to screw a guy you have known for about two weeks is what takes precedence in your mind.
- Not telling your partner the clinic you are heading to just in case he needs to reach you and pick you up since you are SUPPOSED to be working a crime investigation and not just boning the detective.
- Accepting and drinking a coffee from a complete stranger because that just makes total sense. Not.
- And of course, the cellphone battery just had to die at the most opportune moment.
The psychic aspect of the book was a joke. I still don’t understand what Dan’s powers are? He didn’t do anything that an FBI profiler wouldn’t have done without the need for a nap every 10 minutes.
The romance was nonexistent. There was more fondness and sexual tension in the tiny bar conversation between Gary and his best friend Cory, than with Dan.
I won’t get too much into the investigation of the crime because that was also a joke. You have 7 victims of a crime and at no point you think that the first step in the investigation is to figure out what connects these victims and how or WHERE they are being targeted?? That’s the part where detectives would’ve looked at commonalities like gym memberships, college, clubs, running trails, parks, and I don’t know… clinics!!!!!
I mean that’s just initial background on any investigation. Specially one that has pharmaceuticals involved.
I guess, the simple fact that a psychic was brought in for a multiple murder investigation before the FBI tells you the quality of detective work in this book.
How this book is rated 4+ stars is beyond me.

This is one of my favourite stories by K.C. Wells. It's a very well-written mystery that kept me guessing, which I love, lol. There even was enough misdirection that I was suspecting another character, which isn't always easy to do. I also very, very glad that there will be more books written with these M.C.s as I am not really ready to say goodbye yet. The romance between these two has only just begun and needs quite a bit more work before we can truly say they have a HEA.
However, it's definitely a book I recommend you pick up if you enjoy hot cops, psychics who know their stuff and a mystery that keeps you guessing!
DNF, stopping at 8% in because not only is the prose littered with cliche phrases, which is disappointing when Wells has been published since 2013, but the tone is so uneven and yet dull that I'd rather read anything else.
4,5 stars for a well-developed mystery and romance.
Gary and Dan are an interesting combination, and I really liked how the author developed the mystery on their interactions. There was only a slight hick-up at the end, where, in my opinion, Dan's behaviour didn't really make sense.
I also liked the secondary characters and hope for both colleagues of Gary's that they will get their own stories.
Nevertheless, I am looking forward to the next book and really hope it will centre again on Gary and Dan.
All in all, it was a very good read which I thoroughly enjoyed
This was a well written mystery with a romantic sub plot. The police procedures were well researched. The author didn't shy away from a bit of gore and that added to the mystery. The story was told from both MC's POV and that of the killer without giving away their identity. The pace was good and the story flowed seamlessly. The mystery was well done and the suspense level ratcheted at 3/4 of the book. The author did well here.
The romance part was interesting with elements of PNR. It was equal parts steamy and sweet. I liked both MCs who had some baggage they brought into this fledgling relationship. This was not insta love romance. Both men, Dan and Gary, felt a deep connection and decided to build on it. I liked the secondary characters and how Dan's gift worked. It was a nice take on psychic abilities. Overall, I enjoyed this book and can't wait to read where the author takes Dan and Gary next. This is no cliffhanger HFN.
This is my first book by this author and I gotta say, I'm very intrigued. The mystery was well thought through and the characters have depth. The plot twist at the end was nice, too. I'm sticking to the 4 star rating, because for now I haven't fallen in love with any of the characters, yet. But I will say this series definitely has the potential to be a great 5 star read!! So I'm gonna grab the second part and we'll see ❤️
This is the first mystery/suspense I've read by KC Wells but I am here for it! I love mystery/suspense, especially ones featuring psychics, so I was primed to pick this book. But I stayed for KC Well's writing, the interesting characters she created, and to see the mystery unfold.
This looks like it will be a series, which means more stories featuring the two MCs. That's very exciting!
Gary is investigating a series of murders with gay victims. His LT suggests bringing in a psychic who could help. Its not until Gary's best friend becomes a victim of the killer that he finally agrees. The 2 men work well together to solve the mystery and obviously the relationship develops between Gary and Dan.
A good mystery which naturally kept me guessing until the killer was uncovered.
It was ok. There were parts that I think didn't work too well. Like the whole Lewis thing. It was so heavy-handed at one point and then the result was super weird. I don't know if I buy Gary and Dan as a couple. There was just something about this book, that didn't quite work for me. I can't pinpoint what it was, but something was off for me.
I love murder mysteries a lot and if they're mixed with a little bit of paranormal then I can't help but love it even more.
Gary is a homicide detective and when a serial killer targeting gay men gets a bit too close for comfort, the department decides to ask for a psychic's help. Here comes Dan who has psychic powers and tries his best to help them catch the killer while he is constantly degraded by one coworker and while he tries unsuccessfully to fight his growing feelings for Gary who he thinks is straight.
It was so sweet seeing them growing closer, sharing personal stuff, sharing meals and stealing moments fir themselves among the chaos and the inner turmoil of both. The case was so hard to follow; a few chapters were from the killer's POV and they are heavy. He is the killer for a reason, and not the kind of killer you sympathise with. No, you want him behind bars asap.
I thought this was a standalone but the end has a preview of the next book and I can't wait to follow another case alongside Gary and Dan, now happily together.
I'm rounding this up from 4.5 but this is a story I really enjoyed. The mystery in this kept me guessing throughout and the developing romance only added to things. I highly recommend this one.
I loved this book so much. It’s a couple days later now, and I’m still thinking about it.
This is my first book by this author, but it definitely won’t be the last. The mystery was compelling and their romance was perfectly woven in and INTERESTING. Ugh, I loved them.
