10/25/21: Continuing my kindle purchase/paperback "replacement" (but not actually following through on that part) classic romance love re-reading barrage...

11/16/15: Continuing my Medieval re-read extravaganza...

5 Old School Favorite Stars

This is one of those books you read when you were younger and love to read and re-read over and over.

Now, due to this, I'm not sure if it really is as good as I think it is...or if the series just has a special place in my heart. So keep that in mind...

I LOVED this! THIS is what love scenes should be...wowza...

And there's ROMANCE and MYSTERY and just a touch of HEART FAIL.

I totally wanted to smack "Duncan"...the boy was just too honorable for his own amnesiac self...GROWL!

The only "hole" in the story was how to deal with the unwanted bride...I had THAT figured out long before THEY did...lol

The UST here was amazing and then it was RESOLVED...and again I say: WHOA...seriously.

Yes, I'd read this again...and again!

Edited: I did just read it again. So good, and I still want to smack Duncan...then hug him and Amber, too!

Same as the first book

It doesn't ruin itself at the end, but saves itself. Just like the first in the series, this book is 70% sort of boring with a delicious punch of angst at the end.

࿔*:・ The plot

Amber, the heroine, is a human feeling detector. When she touches someone she can tell their feelings but in exchange those feelings hurt her like she's being burned or flayed.

Duncan, the hero, is found in a come-like state without a stich of clothing and his memories gone.

A prophecy involving Amber says Amber's soulmate will no bring her pain but pleasure but that he would also be her enemy.

The problem? We have all the information and 70%~80% of the book is just waiting for the confrontation.

Sure, they get to know each other, they flirt and there's tension, but we know what will happen, there's no mystery as to what the outcome will be.

Still, the angst was like the darkest, gooeyest brownie and I had no problem enjoying it.

࿔*:・ The romance

The heroine is pretty much instantly in love, but the hero takes his sweet time. But that's okay because his broken spirit was all the sweeter because he never got to tell her he loved her.

࿔*:・ The final thoughts

Boring plot, decent tension, great angst at the end.

This was so not it. I had such fun with the first book in the series a few years ago (Untamed), so I was excited to see the trilogy was on Kindle Unlimited with the read and listen feature. I decided to continue on with this second book and it was just such a bore and dragged.

I just wanted to get through this book. The characters were super frustrating and the plot and romance weren’t any help. At multiple points the characters would be told something repeatedly, would try whatever it was anyways and then acted shocked when they found out what they were initially told was in fact true. 🫠 I’m so bummed this medieval historical wasn’t as much fun as the first book, but now I know.

As I continue reading this series, I continue to be shocked as each novel has been unlike any historical romance that I've read before. Each novel combines historical romance with medieval romance and fantasy romance altogether making something similar to an adult fairy tale. Seriously, an adult fairy tale is the closest thing I can compare this book to and even that comparison doesn't seem substantial enough.

The chemistry between these two main characters is so good that this couple may be in my top five for favourite couples ever. Do not hold me to that statement because I have commitment issues but seriously: that romance though.

This novel was such an adventure that I couldn't stop reading. The ending had/has me a little bit confused but I don't know if that was intentional or if I was reading too much into things. Either way, it's an amazing read and I can't wait to read the next book in this series.

The story drags too much. Several times I found myself speed reading to get through it faster.

I did not care for the plot which was about a man with amnesia, who falls in love, hates her after he regains his memory, but returns to her in the end. Maybe this plot would be ok if done by another author, but it was not enjoyable the way it was done here. I also found the ending too abrupt. I would have preferred knowing what their life was like after they got together and how the alliances among Dominic, Erik and other warlords worked out. This is the second book I've read by this author. The first book was The Secret Sister which I also did not like. I don't plan to read any more books by this author. Sexual content: moderate.

Ahhh, this is an old skool historical that works the genre really well.

It is full of mood and atmosphere.... druids and prophecies... thunderstruck trees and mystical standing stones ... moors and mysts... super sexy times and super angsty angst ... amnesia and betrayal...fated love and fated doom... cool names like 'Erik the Undefeated' and 'Amber The Untouched'... you can almost smell the peat smoke and cured animal hides.

Anyway, fun and entertaining with enough romance and conflict to fill the whole ass book.

Amnesia, even the magical kind, is no excuse for a hero to behave like a complete jerk! This was quite the downgrade from the first book in the series.

Amber is known as the "Forbidden". Amber is one of the 'Learned", and there is a prophecy that if Amber ever gives the three parts of her self; Body, Heart and soul, then death will be in her future. Amber has always been well protected, and if she ever touches another, it gives her pain, as she can sense emotions by touch. Then one day, a man who has lost all of his memory, a wounded warrior, enters her life, and as she brings him back to health, an unbreakable bond forms between Duncan and Amber. From their first meeting, a desire builds between the couple. Amber knows her future, and as Duncan's memories start to slowly surface, she knows that soon the love he has for her will fade and turn into anger, but will her love be strong enough to survive what has been foretold?

Forbidden is the second book in the Medieval trilogy, and the last book that I needed to read to complete the series. Since I had read the last book first, I had been waiting for Duncan and Ambers story for a while, and I was thrilled to finally be able to read it, and learn more about this couple. Forbidden is quite a intense ride of a romance. It is set in the medieval time period, and Forbidden has quite a bit of a fantasy/paranormal element that is thrown into the mix. The heroine has the ability to feel the emotions of anyone she touches, and the majority of the time, she feels intense pain. She has always known of her future, and has been labeled as the "Forbidden", so that all would know that she couldn't be touched. But when she meets Duncan, who is injured with no memory, his touch calms and soothes her, makes her feel pleasure, and for the first time in her life she feels no pain. You see the bond that develops between Duncan and Amber, and its very emotional and romantic at times.

The characters are quite good together. Duncan is a skilled and powerful warrior, and the enemy to Amber and her people. Then he is found in a sacred place, where he is practically nude, with no memory of who he is. Even without his memory, the reader sees the evidence of his strength and even possessiveness and signs of the "Alpha Male" is very present, although not as strong as you would expect. Amber is quite strong heroine, way more strong than you expect her to be from the beginning. She has the type of personality as a "fighter", it may not be with weapons, but she fights with everything she has at her disposal and never gives up on Duncan, even at times when he almost betrays the love they share. Duncan and Amber are quite explosive together. The secondary characters were fun as well, and I enjoyed seeing Dominic and Meg and some other side characters involved in the story as well. They added a unique characteristic to the story.

Overall a powerfully written medieval romance that pulled at my heartstrings from the beginning. I was cheering all the way for this couple, there was such a endearing quality to Duncan and Amber. A beyond memorable story that is packed full of intrigue, passion and intensity. OUTSTANDING!

Another reread. Still wonderfully in love with this series that I first read in the 90's. I love the druid aspects of the story and the notion of mist being a wavering, thin link to another time and place. Duncan and Amber take you on a trip of tender love that turns to hate because of deceptions, then onto a rough road of understanding and acceptance that takes you back to the purest love. Elizabeth Lowell says it best in the epilogue:

"It was a story of loss and daring, of an unLearned warrior braving the Druid way between time and place, life and death. It told of a knight vanishing into the mist on a dangerous quest and riding out once more with his lady in his arms. It was a story of love that bloomed, unexpectedly, bringing life to everything it touched".

As I headed into the last half of the story, I felt my soul pulled and torn right along with Duncan and Amber. Such a beautiful, emotional read!

I feel that this is the weakest book in the whole series. The pacing was a bit slow during the first half. The proses were too flowery that I actually cringed at some of them. Some of the scenes were repetitive as well. However, the MCs, Duncan and Amber were lovely. The books in the series definitely have to be read in order. Some of the characters from the previous book made an appearance. I read the first book Untamed quite some time ago so I was a bit lost on who's who.. Despite the flaws, it was an enjoyable reading experience.

Slow and borderline boring, Duncan’s and Amber’s Cosmo-Orgasmic connection and all the drama it created wasn’t enough to elevate this book to higher rating.

This was okay but it felt longer than necessary. Feels as if they took one scene and stretched it out for 150 pages and then had a second scene for 150 pages...I don't remember a lot actually happening. I like Amber and Duncan well enough but they weren't anything special.

Definitely not one of my favorite books. I don't know if it as the audiobook narrator, the plotline, or the genre, but I didn't care for it too much.

I think I didn't like where multiple times throughout the book, characters were told what the consequences would be if they did a certain action. Then the characters would do that action and be stunned when the consequences caught up with them. Seriously?!?!

For example, Duncan was told Amber was a virgin, but he "knew" that she wasn't. (She was known as "Amber the Untouched") He said that if he took her virginity then he'd marry her. Then, they have sex and surprise, surprise, Amber the UNTOUCHED is a virgin. Duncan is stupefied. Really??

There are other examples similar to this that was just ridiculous.

One of the worst books I've ever read. I understand that many romance novels will be trite and full of all the countless genre cliches, but this one was extremely ridiculous. The ending also left me angry and not at all filled with lovely thoughts of a a great, true love story. It was just poo poo all around.

I am in L ♥ O ♥ V♥ E in every way, shape and form of the word. With this book.

description

It has been waaay too long since I've read a book that has made me stay up with the stars to finish it. I was thinking about it during the day, dreaming of it during the night. It was incredible. I forgot the sheer joy of reading a book, not for the outcome but the journey.

Call me cheesy or old-fashioned, but I live and breathe for romance novels that are fairytale-esque.
Honour, integrity, courage. All virtues that entice me. There was such a purity, an old world magic and beauty woven in the words.

description
Julie Garwood has always sat at the top of my historical romance favourites, but in this book I have found the stuff of dreams.

Why am I so obsessed?

description

I just am.

And I couldn't be happier.

Ahhh Duncan, whisk me away. Such sweet, honourable characters. Lowell really captures the essence of true, transcendent love.

Duncan was very much an alpha male, but not stubborn or OTT. Instead, alpha in the way of kings from tales of yore. Disciplined, fair and oh so righteous. (When he goes berserker? HELL. YES.)

Amber was kind and gracious, with a heart to hold the world. Such a beautiful pairing, inside and out. Both so protective and ferocious of their love.

This reminded me of all my favourite childhood fairytale films but adult version, if ya know what I mean ;)

description

I loved the world building, PLEASE OH PLEASE CAN ERIK GET A BOOK??! PRETTY PLEASE?? Anyway, back to the world building (this book honestly has made me delirious I think), the atmosphere was so well presented. The hounds and falcons call piercing the skies in the background, I got chills.

description

Almost cinematic. Ah such is the power of words.

This was unicorns and fairies (okay there weren't actually unicorns or fairies but you get the vibe), rainbows and star dust. And I. DRANK. IT. ALL. UP.

description

Much love for all the disney fuzzies combined with startling searing sensuality!
I mean wooow, I've read love scenes more descriptive but it's the poetic intimacy of the words that make this seem somehow more romantic.

Side note about the writing- in fact, main note because a book isn't a book without writing- the imagery, description, the world ahhh all of it was so perfectly orchestrated. I get lost in the flowery words.

I wish I could spend longer on this review, but it's touching midnight and my eyes are shutting from lack of sleep - because of THIS BOOK, naturally.

My advice: don't let this slip if you like poetic, romantic romance (I know that sounds silly but I was previously reading dark romance so this was a welcomed change). After all, we are talking love here. So why not wear your heart on your sleeve? ;)

And what are my current thoughts after finishing this? Wellll, since you asked...

I liked this. I didn't realize it was a sequel to Untamed until I was half-way through the book. I read Untamed years ago and then remembered the bells on Meg and Dominic training her like a falcon. This was a good book. I don't know how factual it was. But hey it's a medieval romance not a historical epic intended to educate.

I did kind of feel like the hero needed to redeem himself a bit more. I would not have been so forgiving. He was all too willing to give her up for the other woman's dowry.

I was kind of disappointed to see that Eric the brother didn't end up with his own book.

I read this many years ago and decided I wanted to read it again because I remember liking it.

Well, I still like it but it does come across a bit corny, like romance novels often do I suppose., but I like the story, the characters (more or less). It's a great book for an interesting story that is completely fluffly i.e. it is not hard to read, you don't have to remember stuff, it's completely not taxing, something to read when you want to read and relax but you want something you don't have to think about.

Interesting to note that the author, Elizabeth Lowell is the pen name of Ann Maxwell so if you like this book also check out Ann Maxwell.

Never to love or be touched without knowing the persons evrey thought. Never embracing anyone without their touch harming you. Until a strager comes from out of nowhere. His thoughts do not hinder you. His love embraces you comforts you.. to the point where you would give your soul to keep that one moment. To surrender all, at the cost of losing your life. That is what this book is about. I must admit that i cried during this book, and reread it often.

This is still one of my most favorite books in the entire world and I wish she would finish this series! I obviously re read it about every year or so just so I can go through this journey with Amber and Duncan! If you like medieval romance that Elizabeth lowell has struck a home run out of the park with this book, you have loss of memory, with determined love, with pain, betrayal, more pain, love, and additional characters to suck you into the next in the series. MUST READ

I'm thinking if I had read this instead of listening to it I would have enjoyed it even more. I found it a BIT repetitive only in it's phrasings and sayings, and that got a bit annoying. I was going to give this one a 3 star rating about half way through, but I found myself sucked into the story 3/4 of the way, and my ipod hooked to my arm while I did chores so I could finish it. :-)

A lot of elements I like in a romance, but fell kinda flat for me. Admittedly, I'm not a huge fan of the paranormal in my romance. Also, I think this had too many similarities to the first book in the series (Untamed). More stone circle scenes...
