The true story of this little shit
who everyone thinks is such a sweet little princess-ummm yeah.That pale skin always made me wonder... Look how she grew up.
I loved this! I think this is one of the best re-telling's I've seen.
Many thanks to my buddy Kelly for giving me a heads up on this one.

Holy crap on a cracker! This short story by Neil Gaiman was creepy!
The story is told by Snow White's stepmother. She is afraid of Snow after she . . uh . . bit and sucked her finger!
She took the dried apple from me and began to chew it with her sharp yellow teeth.
“Is it good?”
She nodded. I had always been scared of the little princess, but at that moment I warmed to her and, with my fingers, gently, I stroked her cheek. She looked at me and smiled — she smiled but rarely — then she sank her teeth into the base of my thumb, the Mound of Venus, and she drew blood.
I began to shriek, from pain and from surprise; but she looked at me and I fell silent.
The little Princess fastened her mouth to my hand and licked and sucked and drank. When she was finished, she left my chamber. Beneath my gaze the cut that she had made began to close, to scab, and to heal. The next day it was an old scar: I might have cut my hand with a pocket-knife in my childhood
Yeah. Anyway, the King dies and the stepmother is left with the vampire monster. No, they don't say she's a vampire but come on.
The stepmother does some stuff to get rid of Snow White but I was thinking, you stupid, your supposed to do this not that. But, then we wouldn't have the story right?
This is NOT a story for children! There are sexual situations and a little bit of a bloody mess. And the Prince is totally gross! DO NOT LET LITTLE KIDS READ THIS!

5 wonderfully creepy stars
Things are never as they seem.
Take one very creepy and ruthless Snow White, add vampirism and necrophilia, and you're sure to get your fix this Halloween.
Neil Gaiman continues to surprise me every time I read something of his. Snow, Glass, Apples tells Snow White's tale from the Queen's point of view. And let me tell you that it's no fairy tale, but a horror one. The Princess is some kind of emotionless vampire who cannot be killed. At the same time, the Queen is but a victim in this story. I found myself rooting for her, praying that against what I know from fairy-tales, she'd survive and kill the monster.
Clearly, I would not recommend this for children. It is too dark and twisted. But if you're older, you would not want to miss Snow, Glass, Apples. It's simply amazing. It's Neil Gaiman.

I actually read this shortie two weeks ago, but today I was looking at my shelves and I was suprised to see it had no review, since I was 99,9% sure I had reviewed it. Plus, it deserves one, so here I am trying to write a decent review.
Snow, Glass, Apples is a retelling of Snow White, but it's not your typical retelling. It's told from the perspective of the dear witch, who if I'm honest with you, was always my favourite character.
C'mon, how could I not like her?
I think it worked for me because of its dark atmosphere and because of the way the plot took. Have you ever wondered why Snow White's skin is so pale and her lips so red? No? Well, I did. I was a cynic kid and I always thought about those things. Did you ever want to punch this face?
Gosh, I'm clenching my teeth with just looking at that gif!
Well, I always did, and in this story too, but for very different reasons.
This was my first read by Neil Gaiman, and it's not going to be my last. I like his writing style and how he does not shy away the darkness. I decided to start with this one because it was short and I was warned his books are not for everyone, but just with Snow, Glass, Apples I figured I like him.

Once again, Neil Gaiman enraptured me in his dark, little world of princesses. You may as well forget the Disney versions because Gaiman's princesses are never the damsel-in-distresses and his tales are not quite for the light-hearted either. His princesses are their own sole heroes but sometimes, they can also be the villains.
In this case, Snow, Glass, Apples is a very gritty, very twisted retelling of Snow White. What also makes it quite different is that this little tale is told in the perspective of the Queen's.
There is the old saying that says there are three sides to every stories: Theirs, yours and the truth of what really happened. What if the Queen is not truly evil afterall? What if the girl with the black hair, fair skin and red lips is more than what she seemed?
I felt very creeped out with this version of Snow White. By morphing her into this girl with a mean streak and a sinister background, Neil Gaiman has took away my image of a sweet, innocent princess. Perhaps even for good...
This dark hole of a tale is accompanied with a dash of Gaiman's enthralling writing style which made reading it even more atmospheric. Snow, Glass, Apples may be too short for my liking but it's a real winner all the same.
Actual rating: a very high 3.5 stars.

A short review of a short story: I've not read Neil Gaiman before this and I read this online without illustrations, which I assume accompany this story. This was a very brilliant take on Snow White, quite imaginative and different, but with the kind of creepy, sexual overtness that I would imagine could work very well in comic form...not for children.

How I could not know that Neil Gaiman wrote an alternate version of Snow White's fairy tale, I will never know. As soon as I did find out, I had it on my TBR of course and what better time of year to read this creepy little what-if story than October (and especially this close to Halloween)?! :D
I will not say much about the story since it's so short and my review would then spoil the fun, but I will say this: you will never look at innocent little Snow White the same way again and you will certainly not compare her to an innocent little lamb anymore. Bwahahahahahaha!
Neil Gaiman's writing style is, again, marvellous. I really think that his love for fairy tales of any kind makes his renditions so wonderful and this little gem was no exception.

I think it's criminal to call this story a comic
It's such an amazing take on snow white that will ruin snow white's image for you for all time, the master fantasy writer in Neil Gaiman writes a small masterpiece in this short story making snow white a vampire, a vampire that refuses to die, take away her heart or poison her with bloody apples, she is still coming for you, she will put you in a kiln and burn you alive.
This was not the respite I wanted though I will go back to superman, and read my books of magic tomorrow.
I wonder though what path would the books of magic have went through, if Neil Gaiman continued writing them.

I'm ambivalent about this short story: on one hand, I think the idea of presenting the Queen as the maligned party and Snow as the villain is a genius subversion, one with lots of potential and one that I particularly have grown interested in after reading some feminist interpretations of the tale's theme. But on the other hand, I am left with the uneasy feeling that Gaiman didn't achieve much with his retelling.
It's not the twists, the perversions, the horror, and the creepiness; not at all. Like many original versions of fairy tales, this retelling is disturbing and nothing like Disney's version or many of the current retellings. It's the exaggeration of said twists and perversions. In the standard version, albeit a quite black-and-white narrative, you can still understand the underlying themes and identify with the human conflict, and what magic there is to be found is "believable" in the sense that it is easy to grasp, and the storyline never goes overboard. But here? How do you even explain that Snow White can live without a heart? How can a couple of seemingly fully human and normal and non-crazy people conceive and bring to life a . . . whatever this child is? Is she vampiric, and if so, how come she was born this way and not transformed into one, and how come she can live in the daylight?
So many questions of this sort, all unanswered, which make the story more of a weak puzzle than anything else. If the plot were to be summed up, it'd be like this: change places with the two leading ladies, making the Evil Queen the reasonable and sympathetic one and the innocent maiden the bad one, increase the badness factor to Sauron levels, sprinkle a bit of horror for spice, fail to understand the thematic thread of the tale is wholly different, and serve the dish cold in a tiny platter.

You can drop the act, Snow White. Always knew behind that innocent sweet face of yours was actually a perverted psychopath.
I think this is the first time I read a Gaiman book, all I knew was Coraline, the Burton-esque movie version. I am incredibly and pleasantly surprised to see I had no clue what I was going into.
Snow, Glass, Apples is a (too) short retelling of what actually happened in the cute Grimm story. It's good to know finally the truth is out there and that chick can stop pretending to be the fairest.

Neil Gaiman has taken whatever sweet childhood memory I have about Snow White and destroyed it with a chainsaw. Love it.

Monstrous children are my fucking terror kryptonite..... they always do the shudder-bombs to me, ALWAYS!!
This revamped fairytale is as sinister as one can hope. It takes us back to the stories that were told to terrify children into not doing things. Like going outside. Walking in forests. or offering hungry children apples. EVER.
It's no secret that I am a Neil Gaiman fan but I fucking loved this short. It was creepy, sadistic and fucking perfect.

Not all fairytales are as beautiful and magical as we remember. Some of them are far more sinister than we actually realized.
If you don't believe me, just try to imagine how the "villain" would tell their story of what happened.
This was one of the best and creepiest fairytale retellings I've read, I just wish it were longer.
Everything in this story fit perfectly with the contex of the original faiytale, from Snow White to the Prince and his "disturbing kinks".
The fact that this was written from the Evil Queen's POV, was the cherry on top.

It's always such a joyous occasion when you find a version of a fairy story of your childhood that is fucked up and perverted and the sort of kinky you only get to find on the Rule 34 subreddit/4chan. (nothing wrong with that). Throw confetti! Blow the horns! Yay shattered childhood memories!
Truth be told, I have always found Snow White ten shades of annoying. Always cheerful and singing and pls k, no sane individual can keep up that act unless there's something sinister lurking underneath the surface. I wouldn't be lying if I said that I was occasionally suspicious of her having something frisky going on with the dwarves (I've never claimed to be a mentally stable child.)
Snow, Glass, Apples has a horror twist on this timeless tale. We have a step-mother who is kind and wise, and a Snow White who likes to suck blood of and deepthroat any walking(?) person in possession of male genitalia (her father, the dwarves, random strangers not spared).
Only Neil Gaiman can come up with such wtf material and execute it with finesse and sophistication. Your perversion inspires perverts like me. ^_^

Neil Gaiman's fantastic retelling of Snow White from the Evil Queens perspective is drenched in my kind of perfection. Like a glass of red wine - it was absolutely delicious, also chillingly dark, and incredibly erotic (yeah, wine does that to me. I ain't even ashamed).

Holy Crap! What if Snow White were really a monster? Well.....she certainly is in this dark and creepy story! Gaiman tells the fairytale from the evil stepmother's viewpoint with crazy good and eerie special effects making for a shockingly good tale. With red type print to accentuate the voice of the Queen, this short play is easy to read and moves right along.
Would highly recommend this wickedly freaky and scandalous take on an old children's classic to mature audiences only as it is sexually explicit throughout.

خطر لو رفتن داستان
این یکی از قوی ترین داستان های کوتاه نیل گیمن بود که تابحال خوندم. حال و هوای دلهره آوری که داره ما رو یاد نسخه اصلی سفید برفی میندازه. در واقع با این داستان نیل گیمن ما حالا شیش نسخه از سفید برفی توی ذهنمون خواهیم داشت! شاید حتی بیشتر!

توی این داستان همه چیز عوض می شه و ترکیب رعب انگیزی از سفید برفی و خون آشام رو داریم که نامادری انسانش گیر این افتاده و باید بگم توصیفاتی که در مورد شاهزاده ای با اسب سفید این داستان می شه واقعا چندش اوره، حتی خود سفید برفی هم کاری می کنه آدم از خوندن داستان مورمورش بشه. جالبیش اینه که نیل گیمن کاملا اون فضای داستان های برادران گریم رو حفظ کرده و یه عناصر دیگه وارد داستان کرده که دید آدم کاملا عوض می شه و شما اصلا از خوندن دوباره داستان سفید برفی حوصله اتون سر نمی ره!

خطر لو رفتن داستان
این یکی از قوی ترین داستان های کوتاه نیل گیمن بود که تابحال خوندم. حال و هوای دلهره آوری که داره ما رو یاد نسخه اصلی سفید برفی میندازه. در واقع با این داستان نیل گیمن ما حالا شیش نسخه از سفید برفی توی ذهنمون خواهیم داشت! شاید حتی بیشتر!

You think you know Snow White? Think again. She's evil...pure evil!!! Her prince is equally as evil as she is. Neil Gaiman has taken the lovely fairy tale I grew up knowing, and has changed it into a disturbing story. I'm sick and twisted, so I thoroughly enjoyed this one!!

This was disturbing on so many levels. (*shivers*)
A dark twisted retelling of Snow White. Enough said,... I'll never think of this fairy tale without remembering Gaiman's short. Of all things... a blood-sucking Snow White (there were clues, yes... skin so white, lips so red).
“The goose-grease begins to melt and glisten upon my skin. I shall make no sound at all. I shall think no more on this.
I shall think instead of the snowflake on her cheek.
I think of her hair as black as coal, her lips as red as blood, her skin, snow-white.”
I need brain bleach.

Kratko, efektno, britko,... i toliko izvrnuto (slatka mala Snežana, vrh joj na dnu stoji) i drugačije...
Neko bi možda rekao da je klasična bajka već sama po sebi nasilna, ali Gaiman još jednom pomera granicu dalje.
Uvek su mi se sviđala "viđenja poznatih stvari iz drugačijeg/tuđeg ugla", ali ovo je prosto WOW.

So disturbing, but so good.
I love Neil Gaiman. And I’ve loved almost everything I’ve read by him. Even the books of his that I didn’t adore still made an impact on the way I think and have burrowed into my brain. And every one of them seems intent on staying within the homes they’ve carved into my gray matter. Snow, Glass, Apples is no exception. Whenever I think of Snow White from now on, his rendition is the one that will flash through my mind. Sorry, Disney. I’m not sure I can ever watch Snow White and the Seven Dwarves again without an eye twitch.
I’ve always been intrigued by the physical description of Snow White. You know, the whole “skin white as snow, lips red as blood, hair black as ebony” thing. So, I loved Gaiman’s take. And it still managed to surprise me. I know Halloween has passed, but if you get the urge to read something short and creepy, I recommend this story.

As do I. Snow White and the Seven Dwarves is a fairy tale, nay, a beloved fairy tale about a young, beautiful girl with hair as black as ebony, lips as red as blood, and skin as white as snow. It is the story of the triumph of good over evil; of the victory of an innocent, loving and beautiful child over her clever, evil, equally beautiful step mother. But Neil Gaiman doesn't think so. Why? Because he's Neil fucking Gaiman and he can ruin any fairytale he wants.
You see, it's all about perspective. The kind and gentle (for the intents and purposes of this story only) stepmother says, "They call me wise, but I am far from wise, for all that I foresaw fragments of it, frozen moments caught in pools of water or in the cold glass of my mirror. If I were wise I would not have tried to change what I saw. If I were wise I would have killed myself before ever I encountered her, before ever I caught him."
"Wise, and a witch, or so they said, and I’d seen his face in my dreams and in reflections for all my life: sixteen years of dreaming of him before he reined his horse by the bridge that morning, and asked my name." At the ripe age of sixteen, she finds herself in love with the beautiful king of the land. Sixteen and but a child herself, she finds herself married to him, and caring (I use the word loosely here) for his five year-old daughter. Her eyes were black as coal, black as her hair; her lips were redder than blood. ... Her teeth seemed sharp, even then, in the lamplight. But of course, everything about the daughter is not as it seems, and tragedy befalls our heroine.
A landscape, unrecognisable after a snowfall; that is what she has made of my life.
Saying anything beyond this would, of course compromise the build of the story. I will say this, though; this book is not for the faint-hearted, as beautiful as it is. Neil Gaiman, you perverse weirdo. I didn't think I could ever love you more, but see, now, I do.
I'll leave you with this...metaphor. Autumn is the time of drying, of preserving, a time of picking apples, of rendering the goose fat. Winter is the time of hunger, of snow, and of death...

Interesting (for lack of a better word) retelling of "truth" of Snow White.
Darker retellings like this also catch my interest. It's always intriguing to see how each writer will twist the myths to their own devices and what falls from their pens.
Points for the creativity and the writing but despite all that, I never got fully immersed in the story itself.
Would recommend if you are looking for something different :)

"They will have my body, but my soul and my story are my own, and will die with me."
I have no idea what I was expecting from this. It surely wasn't what I got. A friend here in GR marked it as to-read and it caught my attention. But damn! It was very good. I really like and enjoy a good dark twisted retelling. So if you do too, don't waste more time. It's very short and amazingly well written. But...it has some gore scenes and stuff, not too dark for me...but you've been warned.
Excelente para ser una historia corta. Admiro a la gente que puede escribir una buena historia con tan pocas palabras. Ese es el verdadero talento.
De un tiempo para acá me ha picado el mosquito de los retellings (y por mosquito me refiero a Marissa Meyer), y ahora ando como loca buscando buenos libros con esa temática. Así que no me sorprendí para nada cuando descubrí esta historia corta y me la leí el mismo día.
He tenido la oportunidad de leer solo uno de Gaiman, pero en definitiva mientras leo otras de sus novelas, este retelling cortó no esta NADA mal. Tiene ciertas escenas medio gore, pero a mi me encanto.
Recomendado para quienes quieran leer algo corto, pero con sustancia.
