The Primal Hunter #5

The Primal Hunter 5

Rate this book
The first major system event has arrived as all the major factions of Earth converge…

Yalsten, an old cursed land once occupied by ancient vampires, but now long forgotten, finds itself the grounds for the system event known as a Treasure Hunt.

Follow Jake as he and the rest of his fellow Earthlings compete and cooperate in uncovering the secrets of this ancient land while naturally acquiring any and all of that sweet, sweet loot. But not without trouble.

The ancient defenses still stand between Jake and his rightful bounty, the cursed land itself rising in opposition against the invaders. Vampires of old who have long been dormant are awakened from their slumber, with each one appearing only stronger than the one before. By that logic, Jake truly hoped for a proper final boss of this event; the only question was…

Would he find the ultimate challenge from the vampires or his fellow man?

I'm normally not a fan of artificial quests or training simulations in LitRPG and was worried that this whole book would be nothing but that. Happily, while it was an artificial challenge, the consequences for the participants were very real.

One of the interesting aspects of this episode was that there were no cartoonish bad guys. Everyone had a backstory that adequately explained the actions they took. In fact, even the vampire lord was somewhat sympathetic by the end.

I wasn't sold on the duel as a climax for the book. I've seen this trope before but either it wasn't explained fully or I just don't grok their irresistible drive to fight. Regardless, the duel was choreographed well and taught both characters a lot about their abilities, path, and nature. So, it was not wasted time.

Overall, I'm still onboard The Primal Hunter train. Bring on book 6!

Book five

Still not a hunter, just a killer. Everything is so in depth that it gets boring and causes me to skip pages and pages.
Anytime a fight bores you, this is a bad sign. Most fights end in minutes. They don't take hours.
Especially between highly trained combatants.
There's plenty of good in this story, but it suffers from an overabundance of detail. This turns good into boring.

The series became repetitive, the Main Character acts like a douchbag that is above everything and has no real goal. I think this will be last book of the Primal Hunter series for me

A lower quality filler

The event of 10 days taking the whole book, not even some after math was explored… Don’t know if the author is getting too confident or just lazy. But the treasure hunt is just a low quality and high number of random crap that drags on forever.

Earlier book also drags out the dungeon events and every fight scene, but this book took it to another level. There is pretty much no character or world development. And the magic progress is low and just random.

I love the series but I would like more character interactions (not random POV), more focus on jake and his progress and how he travels and discover things (not isolated in dungeon and events). The strong parts about this series is the characters Jake and Willy. The most interesting is the system and the multiverse and the order. Not sure if a continue if this is the direction it takes. I reread all book a couple of times and I skip more part the further the series goes.

I love the series. This book is not bad, but falls a bit flat compared to the epic powerups and story progressions of the previous books. In the preface the author jokes about making the whole book about the treasure hunt system event, which would be hilarious… if it was a joke. Unfortunately, the treasure hunt is a series of highs and lows and feels a tad too long, although it does have variety in the form of both action and puzzles, sudden ambushes, and also sprinkled with minor character introductions/development/interactions. In fact, the duel after the hunt felt more exciting than the preceding event. The ending could have been better, as it feels a sudden end, but thankfully not a maddening cliffhanger.

Overall, it is not bad for a fan of the series, and the upcoming stories would continue to be exciting it seems. I would have liked to have some more hints about what happens in the next book in the conclusion part. But the good news is that Book 6 would be coming soon, so that’s a win for us readers!

I enjoyed this installment. Overall a great addition to the series. I am looking forward to the continued story progression and what significant changes, if any, Jake will make to his combat style. I have a good feeling about the next book! I can’t wait for the release of bk 6!

Honestly so far the best book in the series. Had development without leaning too heavy on montage reels. The final battle was also awesome, really felt like a testament to how much the main character has grown. Going straight into the next one!

Now that we've finished book five a few things become clear. First is that the author is much more comfortable when Jake is off on his own in a large setting where it is one person against everyone else. Which is very similar to the tutorial he went through.

The second is that Jake isn't a people person. He's okay with certain people who are finding their own way through D grade, but for most people he'd rather not get involved.

The setting for book five, which was setup in the previous book, is a treasure hunt on a dead world organized by the system. I won't spoil how Jake or any of the other groups do, but it's entertaining to see the posturing and calculating moves other groups make. Jake takes the straightforward bash things down until I get what I want approach.

We see much less of Miranda in this book, as the focus moves to the leaders of the various groups. I suspect that the next book will have Vili getting Jake focused on acquiring more pylons. I'm sure it will be entertaining whether I'm right or wrong.

The book ends on a note that won't make many readers happy but gives Jake the kick in the behind that he needed.

The editing is average, and I counted many errors. The stats pages are getting large which shouldn't be a surprise. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as Jake does what Jake does best: killing the bad guys and taking all their loot.

Recommended. 5/5*

The System Treasure Hunt event begins

Jake and the Sword Saint will finally have a chance to duel and see who is the at the pinnacle of earth’s humans. But first they decide to have a competition as they both are quite competitive, who can kill the most Counts of Blood. Kinda rude considering the sheer number of other Earthlings within the Treasure Hunt. We also learn more of the enigmatic System that controls this reality and how it works.
Preparing for the Hunt is high stress as only those at D-grade or over level 100 will be invited. The entire planets elites rush to qualify as many of their people as they can as never before seen treasures and power are up for grabs.
Jake learns a lot and grows even more than expected during this event, we see him start to build friendships with other elite of Earth. And everyone present in the hunt soon learns why Jake is Earth’s Progenitor when a couple hundred independents and their city lords attempt to kill or make him leave the event. Soon all will know about their failure, well at least for those who survive Jake’s response to an ambush because we all know Jake is only looking for a good, fun challenging fight, and he doesn’t plan to lose or die to some second rate adventurers who think quantity trumps quality.
At the end, Jake has coke to realize that he needs to adjust and improve to cover his limits and weaknesses. But we won’t see how until the next book!!

An absolute slog. The final duel was moronic, and I wound up skipping quite a bit of it during the countdown. The climax of the book is essentially a two part shounen anime fight, with each participant powering up over and over. It's insultingly stupid.

I don't know why the author thinks that monstrous and insane are the only appropriate adjectives one could use to envision powerful people or things. Slightly less prevalent in this particular installment, but still egregious.

I don't know why I read five of these books (thankfully the sixth isn't out yet, or I would likely continue torturing myself). Pure power fantasies. If you like that, and don't mind repetitive descriptions and inane dialogue, then this series might be worth a glance.

Author needs to grow up and lean on his story more and less on the nonsense.

As stated before, the storyline is very good. Many reviews complain about the language, and it is almost like the author decided to double down on his immaturity in this book in response. I understand his native language isn't English, but it's not hard to figure out more appropriate words for the situation. The story would be so much better if it didn't come off as a child thinking he is cool because he recently learned to cuss. It also just seems so lazy and petulant. I would love to recommend these books to others, but I just can't until the author grows up a little.

Good, but I'm not the biggest fan of fight scenes that extend over multiple chapters. Obviously other people like that, but anything that I need to skim large sections of (for any reason) will at best score a 4.

There are some interesting things going on, but 90% of this book was the Treasure hunt, and that could have been greatly condensed for all that it moved the story forward. I'll see what happens with the next one, but so far I'm still interested enough to read #6.

I've read this book via RoyalRoad. It continues to be a fantastic series, with lots of action and not a lot of politics. This is one of the very few LitRPG series I can think of where I've consistently enjoyed the story book after book. Nearly all of them taper off after ~3-4 books and that has not been the case with this series.

Definitely worth a read if you're a LitRPG enthusiast!

I usually don't like sandbox books, but

This one has enough action combined with a good pace that it comes out just fine. The character work is good and it doesn't really on cliche plot devices like backstabbing. This is just another fun addition to the series.

The treasure hunt is officially coming here is the event we were waiting on for ages in the last book!! Let’s not forget who else is ready for the event but Jake’s newest sidekick Sylphie the lovable green bird niece of his. They are teleported to a fallen realm where the treasure hunt will either be fruitful or a failing experience. Jake learns the history of the place now realizing that the original settlers of the fallen realm known as Yalsten decided to convert to vampires and he also discovered the origins of the mist as well!! A new quest with a great reward? Will the duel that has been waited on since the world council between Jake and Miyamoto finally happen? The first boss for Jake this book was a count of blood master vampire which I knew was coming but still lit and during the whole fiasco he’s robbing the man of his furniture. I also loved that for the treasure hunt Sylphie and Jake share an inventory cache. After our first boss fight jake gets robbed by one of his little brother’s underlings not cool Caleb. Jake makes a new friend in the Noburu clan. A great golem massacre has taken place this book also Jake is becoming quite the random kleptomaniac. A mysterious shade friend or foe?? Jake-3 Boss fights-0. Jake meets with Eron again but is this his last meeting with Lord Thayne? Freaking treants!!!!!!!Jake falls into a trap after a hellish Rubik cube puzzle!! Jake can’t even be stopped by a human army!! Jake encounters an underwater level ending with an underwater boss battle yay!!! We stand for water levels….NOT!!!! What do we do at the end of treasure hunts tho? Fight a giant super boss!!!!!!!Not gonna lie this is the most intense battle up next to Thanos in avengers endgame Let’s goooooooo!!!!! What better way to end a huge boss battle than for Jake to finally get his duel with Miyamoto the sword saint towards the end of the treasure hunt but did he win??? One hell of a final fight so many questions will the be answered in the next book we shall see at some point!!

There weren't as many things that upset me in this one. Decent read. Enjoyable combat for the most part. Good interactions with side characters. I'm gonna vent a bit though. You know the author will have moments of bad writing where he doesn't put thought into what's happening. A boss monster attacks group and overpowers them. I can understand none of them having enough toughness to deal with 2500-2800 Strength. But a warrior class not having enough strength to penetrate well into the monster is ridiculous to me. The warrior gets strength from his class, equipment, profession most likely and puts his free points into it. Which is really important because Jake puts Jack into strength and only gets 6 per level to it. So even with titles the strength disparity shouldn't be that large.

I also dislike authors breaking their own rules. In volume 1 it was stated the best way to get resources back bar none was sleep. Meditation helped with health and mana but not really stamina. Yet the main character went to sleep for hours, as D grade mind you and still had low stamina. And later it was stated that you could leave and retain items obtained but couldn't transfer anything. Then within a chapter a statement is made that characters transferred items during that time. How you forget what you wrote so fast?

On Amazon the author describes it as Overlord+Monster hunter. He should add Shounen to that list the way he does things in this series at times. The fights at the end were just dragging on and on. In no other series I've read have I skipped paragraphs of fights. Another thing was the author will do this thing of getting to the end of a countdown as a hype moment. But his execution and writing skills aren't good enough to make it feel impactful or make me excited. Both times it just annoyed me. To the point when I saw him doing that I just started scrolling.

⚠️mild spoilers ahead⚠️

It was kinda surprising that it took the whole book to finish the treasure hunt event. But other than the water related challenge part, I was very focused and emotionally invested in most of the challenges.

Every challenge was different & for some of them, Jake needed to solve the puzzle with others. That introduced us to a bunch of different characters, some new & others we've learned from previous installments. We get to experience different group dynamics & learn way more about all these supporting characters in this book. Some of them were told from the supporting character's pov & I think that helped the author fleshed out the characters pretty well.

The challenges were also diverse enough to keep me interested as Jake had to use a variety of methods & skills to work around the issues he faced; Meaning he couldn't just shoot his way out of every situation which he usually did.

The climax had some dialogues that leaned towards the meaningful or philosophical side, thus adding to our understanding of the final boss & another important character's motivation. This made their characters more nuanced and also easier to empathize with. Overall, it's just a great book. On to the next!

PS: I strongly encourage you to listen to the audiobook for this one. Getting to hear all the different voices of the characters definitely made it way more fun & interesting.

Alright, Book 5. Yalsten — old cursed land, ancient vampire ruins, Treasure Hunt event. Sounds cool, right? And it is, for a bit. The setup had potential. Mysterious setting, high stakes, forgotten history… all the ingredients are there.

But the execution? Meh.

MC’s starting to feel like he’s the chosen one of the System. Every dungeon feels like it’s built for him. Every event bends around him. Even the ancient vampires who should be dangerous, mysterious, and menacing? They’re over here giving him VIP treatment. Like bro, he didn’t earn that. He’s not that guy.

And don’t get me started on the cockiness. At this point, he’s walking around like he owns every realm he steps into, and the worst part? The story lets him.

The whole arc just feels repetitive. The treasure hunt could’ve been epic — factions clashing, real danger, clever twists — but instead it’s just more grind, more skill unlocks, more “oh no, another overpowered monster that he conveniently solos.” The tension's gone. The mystery’s thin. I’m just bored now.

Yeah, I know they’re teasing some bigger thing — higher dimension, new planet, whatever. But honestly? I’m done.

This is the last book I’ll be reading from this series. I gave it a shot. Five books deep. But it’s not worth my time anymore.

I have the same issues with this series that a lot of the other reviews say. I’m biased because I don’t typically like system books at all, but when I’m in a slump they can be fun for a while.

This just gets so repetitive that I started losing interest as it went on and eventually was just getting bored of the story. I think this author might have some issues too lowkey. The MC starts off as kinda a loser and a quiet type of guy who likes to keep to himself and then he just randomly gets like weird mood swings. This makes me think the authors personality or temperament may be reflecting in the character because there’s nothing apparent in the story that would warrant such a shift in tone. The MC just starts being a dickhead out of nowhere and is essentially acting high and mighty like he’s drunk on his own power, but he’s really not which is why it’s so weird which gives the impression that the author is reflecting off the MC in a completely inappropriate way. Idk if anyone else noticed this, but it has totally turned me off from reading this series. I’m glad this is where I quit reading too because looking ahead at all the books still going on in the series and the author continuing to write is honestly so funny to me.

This is easily a peak book in this series so far. The story plays to the author's strengths which were evident in the first couple of (tutorial) books by putting the main character in competition with a large number of humans for fun and prizes (perhaps occasionally to the death). The protagonist has excellent opportunities for growth of his skillset, which are engaging every time they arrive.

And most importantly, the book cover is not a lie. Our hero has a great rival, and the promise of their first meeting is kept here.

The final confrontation that more or less ends the book is probably the best fight in the series thus far. Maybe the only fight more satisfying was the King of the Forest fight, but even that was probably not as good as this one. That fight showed that the main character was at the pinnacle of humanity. This fight, without spoiling the conclusion, shows that the main character still has room to grow. We needed to see that, and the author could tell that before most of us in the audience could, I think. We're in good hands reading Zogarth.

really good adventure

This is an very well written story that’s quite engaging. Jake is still an anti-social a-hole most times, but he gets great joy from throwing down against opponents that challenge him. The treasure hunt occurs and Jake continues to grow, whilst grabbing as much loot as possible. It was with dark amusement that I read how someone absconded with some stuff while he was distracted and they weren’t smart enough to give it back. Then this dude tried to backstab him while other high level people were arrayed against him. It didn’t end well for them. He also met up with the SwordSaint’s grand daughter and they had respect for each other. Hopefully they can develop a relationship since its not good for a person to be alone over much.

The treasure hunt did get a bit tedious towards the end, until the final boss raid. Then there was a contest between Jake and the SwordSaint, which was epic. The SwordSaint had a heck of a story before going transcendent.

The Primal Hunter 5 by Zogarth is perhaps the first book in a long while that I haven't had substantial problems with the characterization of Jake. The dialogue is still stilted as hell at times, as if most of the time people are talking as if they came from a mix between a boardroom meeting in the 1950s and a gamer bro. The heart of the book is the treasure hunt, which Zogarth started by poking fun at, but concluded by playing it completely straight. I definitely enjoyed the later bit more, as the jokey videogame portion ate up quite a bit of text with fairly obvious plot points. The bet, and the loss, was interesting. The duel was also pretty fun, though I'm not sure I like how rare Zogarth is trying to make his super special awesome characters, as it feels downright strange that we're supposed to buy characters as multiversal level geniuses when we haven't even seen another planet in their own universe. But still, there's a massive improvement on Jake's part, and I do like the overall direction the story is going. Hope it continues that way.

4.6 - which pushes this to 5 stars. This was the strongest book of the series so far. It starts and essentially ends with the Treasure Hunt. Throughout the book, Jake’s strength compared to other D level humans is highlighted. He fights Counts alone while others need to fight them in groups, he gathers some interesting loot and ultimately fights the big bad before his inevitable one v one showdown with the Sword Saint, which he surprisingly loses when it turns out the SS is a transcendent. It was fun seeing all the factions in the treasure hunt and the power difference when Jake is gained up on by an unknown group of factions. A 100 vs 4 showdown that Jake easily handles. We got a glimpse into the power of the other factions and there were interesting characters introduced, like the SS’s niece, Carmen, the immortal guy and ultimately the SS himself. Overall an entertaining read and it may be a point where I put the series down to take a breather, only because I’m satisfied with this current arc which seems complete.

Pretty good. I really like the MC. He really enjoys everything he does and that is infectious. I didn't like the ending as much though. Overall a good addition to the series. I am looking forward to the next one. I just hope the audiobook comes out quicker this time.

Honestly, the plot on this series is meh, what carries it is the fantastic cast. Jake as an MC has the refreshing dynamic of becoming happier the more dangerous his opponents are, which allows the action to ramp up without the usual draining litany of "X began to despair" and "the fear became too great for Y". The rest of the supporting cast are similarly fun, with a bunch of relatively unique takes on older cliches. We have, prominently on the cover, an old Japanese swordmaster bound to duty who under it all just wants to fight. We have a twist on the usual norse insert in these things with a boxer lady who couldn't care less about things that aren't boxing. The assassin faction is run by a schoolteacher, and the undead faction knows they're smelly and really wants to be friends. It's really a case study in how what would usually be trite can be made unique through personality and contrast.
