The daughter of a town marshal, Linda Lael Miller is a #1 New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of more than 100 historical and contemporary novels, most of which reflect her love of the West. Raised in Northport, Washington, Linda pursued her wanderlust, living in London and Arizona and traveling the world before returning to the state of her birth to settle down on a spacious property outside Spokane.
Linda traces the birth of her writing career to the day when a Northport teacher told her that the stories she was writing were good, that she just might have a future in writing. Later, when she decided to write novels, she endured her share of rejection before she sold Fletcher’s Woman in 1983 to Pocket Books. Since then, Linda has successfully published historicals, contemporaries, paranormals, mysteries and thrillers before coming home, in a literal sense, and concentrating on novels with a Western flavor. For her devotion to her craft, the Romance Writers of America awarded her their prestigious Nora Roberts Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007.
Long a passionate Civil War buff, Linda has studied the era avidly for almost thirty years. She has read literally hundreds of books on the subject, explored numerous battlegrounds and made many visits to her favorite, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, where she has witnessed re-enactments of the legendary clash between North and South. Linda explores that turbulent time in The Yankee Widow, a May 7, 2019 MIRA Books hardcover, also available in digital and audiobook formats.
Dedicated to helping others, “The First Lady of the West” personally financed fifteen years of her Linda Lael Miller Scholarships for Women, which she awarded to women 25 years and older who were seeking to improve their lot in life through education. She anticipates that her next charitable endeavors will benefit four-legged critters.

Forever and the Night is the 1st book in Linda Lael Miller’s vampire trilogy and what a great start to the world she has created. Good and bad vampires, who can travel through time and worlds, who love poetry and all the arts……..I just so loved this story.

I was at first a bit unsure about Neely….in fact I wanted to slap her couple of times…geez how could she ever think about giving up this amazing man/vampire – dumb I say. Thank you…she saw the light and made the pain that Aidan had to go through worthwhile.

Loved all these crazy characters…his twin sister, Maeve, Valerian (he’s such a endearing character), Lisette, the wicked and evil vampire of note, Tobias and so many more..oh yes not forgetting the truly evil twin vampire children………

This is a sweet romance story that happens to be in a vampire world.

Some of the quotes/lines are really cute… check a few out-

“Oh Aidan”, she whispered. “You’re so beautiful – it’s like touching one of Michelangelo’s sculptures.”

Neely arched beneath him, pleading in strong Anglo-Saxon terms, for what he and he alone could give her.

He found the musky, warm entrance to her body and prodded gently with his rod, as much to warn her of its size and its hardness as to tease her into wanting him even more.
Pretty tame compared to how sex scenes are written today!!!!

This is a pretty unique story…not just a vampire story but a LOVE story in the true sense.

So, if you find this book somewhere, read it. It’s an enjoyable and lovely story.

After turning over evidence that points to a U.S. Senator's participation in a drug ring, Neely Wallace is hiding out at her brother's home in a small Connecticut town. While taking her nephew trick-or-treating, Neely knocks on the door of Aidan Tremayne. Aidan has a dark secret. Hundreds of years ago, he was attacked and changed into a vampire. He hates his life and will do anything to go back to being a human. When he falls in love with Neely, he makes his quest to become human his number one priority.

I read this book when it was published in 1993. At the time, vampires who hated their circumstances was a popular trope. It's not a favorite of mine. Aidan moped his way through this book, vowing that he loved Neely too much to make her face life with a vampire. Neely didn't care that he was a vampire, but did make it clear that she didn't want anyone changing her into a blood sucking monster.

I liked parts of this book, but overall I can't recommend it. I still want to listen to the other books in the series. I remember liking them better than this one. My rating: 2.5 Stars.

I will love you beyond forever, in heaven or in hell, in life or in death....

This is the line that captured my attention at eighteen years old, and I never forgot that line. That is actually the blurb from the second book in this four book series by Linda Lael Miller.

This book was my introduction to paranormal romance; I was hooked! I was feeling nostalgic and went searching for some of the romance novels that I still remember reading as a teenager. I never ever, forgot that blurb or these characters. I was really excited to see that the author released these to amazon kindle-they are out of print, and hard to find. (only three are available; the fourth is not yet.)

I was worried it wouldn't be as good as I remembered since it has been 20 years. So happy I bought it! Aidan is just as I remembered, loyal, self-sacrificing, and desperately in love with Neely. If you love vampires, you will really like this series. These vampires are very powerful; they can time-travel, control minds, and there are some really cool battles with other creatures of lore in this series.

So glad I found these again!

Way back in 1996 I was a single woman living in no where Oklahoma working in the local university library. I was on the net and had even met my future husband (though I didn't know that yet) but I still liked to read... a LOT.

I found myself at a little used bookstore and felt like I had hit the jackpot. I couldn't believe the number of books there for soooooo cheap. One gold mine I found were the Valerian books by Linda Lael Miller.

Vampire Romance - just what I needed during those lonely Oklahoma nights.

At the time I had no idea the genre existed, and quickly found that I really did enjoy the subject and the series. Forever and the Night is the first title, followed by For all eternity (1994), Time without end (1995) and Tonight and Always (1996).

If you have never heard of Valerian and like vampire romance, try any of these titles! You'll love Valerian too!

It's a shame there weren't more than three books in this series. I stumbled on them by accident and took an immediate liking to them. The character of Valerian is especially a favorite. How can you not love a vain, melodramatic, pompus and extravagant centuries old vampire?

The story is well told, the characters well fleshed out, and fun to read and get to know. The plot is somewhat predictable, but that doesn't make it any less fun to read and this is a series I find myself pulling out once every couple of years to read again, just for the fun of it.

Linda Lael Miller was one of the first romance writers I read, and one of very few that I have kept up with from time to time over the years when I feel the urge to pick up a romance. When I noticed she had independently re-released this vampire romance on ebook, I thought I would give it a try (it's only $4.99, after all, and I love a good vampire story) and see what her story from nearly 20 years ago was like. Well, as I recently discovered when trying to re-read a book of Miller's recently after a long hiatus, I seem to be discovering that I don't care for her books as much as I used to.

To begin with the technical, something odd happened with the translation of this title to ebook. Spacing is off and there are bizarre instances when a number "1" will appear instead of the letter "I". I think there was also an instance when the word "Mend" appeared where I think it should have been "friend"? I'm not sure; it was really, really strange -- and unfortunate that it should go to mass market in that condition. But enough about that -- I do think it deserves mentioning, but let's move on to how I felt about the story.

And as for that, I felt... not much. I easily skimmed at least the last half of the book. The story was dull, most of the the characters were lifeless and one-dimensional, save one (thank goodness for Valerian!), and I am beginning to question why I liked Miller's writing. Granted, this book is nearly 20 years old, so I think I should re-read a recent work of Miller's before questioning my loyalty to her books. There was just SO much of that clichéd, over-the-top, flowery writing of the romantic scenes that I found myself rolling my eyes. If the story had been better, I could have lived with it, but the story was pretty lame and there was very little to like about Neely or Aidan, which makes it pretty difficult to find any connection with the book at all. And I am so sick of the "oh, I barely know you, but I know that I love you with my entire being" device.

So... yeah... I don't have a lot of great things to say about this one. There are two reasons I am not just giving this book one star. The first is the character Valerian. Given how little we see of him, it is amazing how much more vibrant he is than either Neely or Aidan. I expect that a future book in this series must be devoted to him, but I will not be reading the rest to find out. The second reason I didn't completely blast the book is one that would be considered a spoiler, but this book has been around so long it hardly seems worth worrying about that. Aidan Tremayne is a vampire who doesn't want to be a vampire and will do anything to change back into a mortal man. I haven't read any stories like that out of the various vampire books I've read over the years, so it was refreshing for me. I just wish it had been enough to save the story for me.

I read this a long time ago, and having never read the genre, loved it! I mentally sort books into literature or fun, then let go of expectations and enjoy the ride! These characters have stuck with me all these years, and that fact alone gives it 5 stars.

Already had a thing for vampires...Read Bram Stoker's Dracula in school, whipped through Anne Rice's Chronicles and I ALWAYS fall for "THAT" vampire (or variation of a vampire)...you know....the One with the crazy/dreamy name that bespeaks interesting power and mystery(Mikhail Dubrinsky, Louis de Pointe, Acheron, Aidan Tremayne ; the One that has a tortured or redeeming soul (definitely Aidan Tremayne, Edward Cullen's predecessor LOL); the One who falls for the ordinary or seemingly delicate woman who becomes his beacon of humanity. I love when authors display the vampire's (POV)stream of consciousness, the fact that they frighteningly retain some humanity (or responsibility for it) but they also have the most potential to be the worst of monsters.
Yeah, LLM has the formula there and even though it has been played, we don't get enough because it is more like a folksong one recognizes will always be sung and bringout desire no matter the cliche surrounding it.
I fell in love with Forever and the Night ten years ago and have reread it over the years and figured that I still love the formula, esp the added mix of intriguing characters like Valerian and Aidan's sister, Maeve, but I definitely think the ending was so wrapped in "quick fixes" or "fixes" that defy the whole theme of the forsaken, humanity's grace and legend of vampire origin and lore. For me, the story shouldn't start with all the heavy and then burst the bubble with an anticlimax, or nonsensical "reaching".
This gets four stars for nostalgia's sake and the fact that this first book in this series/*trilogy(?)* was the only one I liked.

This was a difficult book for me to read. Normally vampire books are my favorite, but I nearly stoppd reading this one. My best description is that it was a lot darker vampire book than I'm use to reading. The vamps all seemed to be very unhappy. I mean they all were perfectly satisfied being vampires save one....Aidan Tremayne. He longed to be human again. Especially after he meets human female Neely Wallace while trick or treating with her nephew one Halloween night. Aidan felt his humanity was stolen from him.

These vampires are time travelers. So, one thing that irritated me was, one minute you were reading about someone in present time Connecticut, then the next you were back in 18th century London.

I did really like the heroine of this book, Neely. She and Aidan made a lovely couple though the other vampires tried to keep them apart through most of the book. They were like star-crossed lovers....they found each other....lost each other....then found each other again. I do love a happy ending after all.

There are three other books in this series and I have them all and do plan to read the others. This book was just a bit slow to get into at the start, then got to the point where I just couldn't put it down.

Really enjoyed this. Total different story lines then alot of the newer vampire stories.

Read again 2/12/2011
Aiden is a vampire, 200 years old and hating every century of it.

His twin Maeve had Valerian change her over when Aiden refused. She would not let him go.

Neely was taking her nephew trick or treating and managed to get to Aiden's mansion. One meeting and they both felt as if they been waiting forever for the other. They both had enemies though.

Neely had turned in evidence against her boss, a Senator, who was involved with the mob and drugs. They wanted her dead.

Aiden had made an enemy of Lisette. She turned him against his will and he spurned her. Valerian and Maeve would protect Aiden against himself, even if it meant removing Neely from him.

Aiden was determined to find a way back to being a man rather then the fiend he thought himself.

This is the story of Aidan the Reluctant Vampyre, who was 'made' against his will 200 years ago. He hates being a vampire, especially now since he's met Neely the Human, and has been searching for a way to become human again. His twin sister, Maeve, does not understand; she willingly followed him into the vampire world and has embraced almost everything about it (she does miss the sun). And then there's Valerian, vain and arrogant and beautiful.

There are no real surprises as the story progresses towards its HEA, but it is creatively done and keeps the reader's attention. This is a very strong 3*, but didn't rise to 4* for me.

I LOVE these books so much. The first one I read was Valerians book and fell in love. I found these books in the library and had to read the rest. I am disappointed that LLM did not write more vampire books. These books got me interested in vampire romance. I read them years ago and recently found the whole series on ebay and am now re reading them.

Just so so, easy to forget, much different for the author, who is successful with traditional romance stories and knows how to weave words together well. There is a distance from the characters which is off putting. The story itself is good enough, but that distance doesn't make the reader care enough to love this book or series.

I tried to finish this book but I couldn't. Hated the time travel, one minute you are reading about present day and then the next you are reading about the 19th century. The first time travel was serioualy confusing to me, until I figured out he time traveled and wasnt just thinking about something that happened in the past.

I read this a long time ago. Almost more romance than supernatural. Aidan hates being a vamp so he has never worked to become a strong one. It is interesting to see his weakness especially when compared to his sister in the next book.

I read this book a very long time ago and wanted to revisit it see if it holds up. It was my first vampire novel. My only previous experience with vampires came from The Lost Boys and Salem's Lot, which were not particularly romantic.
There are going to be spoilers so if you don't want them, skip this review.

Let's look at the things that this book has in regards to the legend of vampires:
1. They drink blood, can't walk about in daylight, can be staked, and can erase your memories
2. They are only supposed to be made if requested, no forced turning. And no children.
3. They can read minds, travel with a thought, and tend to be theatrical.
4. They can travel to other times and dimensions. However, they cannot return to a time before when they were born as humans.
5. They can touch people with their minds and share dreams as well.
6. There is an angel bent on destroying all vampires and his name is Nemesis.
7. Our hero was turned against his will by a jealous lover.
This book has a bunch of tropes: insta love, we can never be together but you are my one true love, woman on the run from trouble, secret creatures & societies, crazy exes, amnesia, and unrequited love.
The book starts right in the middle of the story. There is no introduction, we meet Neely immediately and learn very quickly that she is on the run from bad people who were working with her former boss, a senator. She's hiding with her widowed brother and his young son and meets the resident vampire while trick or treating. Of course, she has no idea he's a vampire but she falls in love with him immediately and decides to find out everything about him because reasons.
Aidan opens the door on Halloween and is immediately struck by the woman on his doorstep. He is besotted and decides he must see her again. He too has fallen in love immediately. He is desperate to become human again as he was turned vampire against his will by a crazy female vampire named Lissette who wanted to possess him.
There is kidnapping, no touching sex, pining, and some really bad word choice. I have to say that the language in the first "real" sex scene was very dated.
It is not a terrible book but I can see where I got many of my vampire expectations. It is clearly written in an earlier time and should be read with that in mind.

This is one of those books that make you think the author must have had vendetta on their mind. Or maybe they went on a sadistic binge and will forever grin thinking of the people who will try to actually trudge through this book. Or maybe they designed this as some kind of psychometric test - what is your pain threshold and how far will you read before you finally break down and give up. Mine was 16%. Given the number of readers who apparently enjoy pain tests, I think I just missed the bus.

I like PNRs. I LOVE vampires. I am a big time fang banger. I can quote Edward and Bella. I have even lain awake wondering what if - just if - I met a vampire one day. And then I have gone on to construct scenarios that would put Christian Grey to shame and make Edward disown me from his ... er ... bloodline? But had I actually woken up in the middle of the night, in a hotel room, and seen a big hulking shape standing inside the room, I would have had VERY different reasons for targeting his groin. Apparently, that is NOT what you are supposed to do. You are supposed to just accept that there is an intruder in your room who happened to be the neighbour you met exactly 2.5 times previously, and move on to the sexy times. And apparently, once you are past the first throes of passion, you ask not "Who the heck are you and how did you enter my locked room?" but "How did you make love to me without touching me and why did you not come?"

Apparently, I missed THAT bus too.

Man, my life is one long tragedy and I will never know what to say if I ever did bump into a fanger. Oh, Edward, Edward, why art thou Edward.

After finding evidence against a corrupt US senator, Neely Wallace fears for life and leaves to hide with her uncle in a small town in Connecticut. But she’s not ready for what she finds when she takes her young nephew out Halloween trick-or-treating at the old Tremayne mansion.

For two centuries, Aidan Tremayne has been hiding from his enemies, especially his creator. Hating what he is, he lives in semi-seclusion, on the edge of humanity, hoping for peace of mind and the return to the land of the living. He’s just about given up when Neely comes into his life.
Interesting connections with the various other vampires and different personalities. I like how his twin sister is with him.

This has an odd difference from the regular vampires. They can travel back and forth through time and space. But only within their lifeline. Convenient for hunting in certain places and avoiding unpleasant historical events, etc.

Footnote: 1) Read the Hoopla eBook version. Wish they’d been gap between character POVs. Would have made it less jarring to read.

2) I can see vague resemblance to the Twilight series. (Yes, I know this was first. ) Young, disillusioned vampire meets a gullible human female and is instantly attracted, love becoming more powerful than his hunger for blood. His need to protect her from other vampires while searching for a way to be together. Then a supreme group of vampires coming down on him for judgement.

Fave scenes: Aidan’s encounter with the young man in the carriage, Neely finding Aidan’s journals, Neely going to London and Aidan buying the roses.

Ummm...what?
I chose this audiobook thinking it would be a simple sweet vampire romance given the description.
I hate it.

Not only are there cliché statements constantly running around, but the vampire Aiden is going to and from worlds or centuries or something without any break or explanation.

The characters are flat, boring and confusing. Sometimes it's all about the two characters, then the next minute it's a million underdeveloped vampire characters from some century, unexplained.

Neely is supposed to be a damsel in distress to be saved by the vampire, but there is never any real action or drama revolving around her supposed "secret dirt on the Senator" so I'm left wondering, what is going on? Why is she in danger if the threat is not real?

Then of course, the vampire is doing things "out of body" but then disappears the next minute. He suddenly loves Neely after one day?

There's so much back and forth that I got whiplash...and then a suddenly bi-sexual vampire comes in to play halfway through the book and a spoiled but somewhat nice but evil vampire sister?
It was just too confusing. I couldn't handle it.

And then the end, SPOILER ALERT - both main characters lose their memory due to Aiden's change to a mortal and Neely has her memories erased by another vampire for no good reason AND they never find the letter Neely wrote and left on the mantel that would have probably jogged her memory and made something of a conclusion.

How disappointing.

Actually, it's more of a 2.5 than a full-on 3 stars. The only reason it even made it to a 2.5 is that I absolutely love Aiden!!!! He is such a beautiful character and since I listen to the book, the reader did his voice so perfectly. Plus, I have a thing for Irish men and their God-beautiful accent it's ahhh I swoon!!!!

Anyhow as for the story, to be perfectly honest, I have no idea how I feel about it. There were times then I'm like I must know what happens and other times I'm like why the hell am I wasting my time listening to this.

It was nice but not the best Vampiric novel I've listened to. And to be frank, I found the idea of Aiden not liking being a vampire rather odd and bizarre, but because he was so good-looking, I overlook that fact and carried on. I did like his sister as well. I found Valerian charming at points and atrocious at other times. Neely was a decent character didn't love her didn't hate her. I did, however, found her annoying at some point but eh.

Overall, so did not see the ending play out the way it did. Kinda felt sad a bit as if the characters missed a crucial part of the whole story. I don't know... shrug bittersweet.

Who wouldn't want to be a vampire, live forever and have special powers? Aidan. He really does not want to be a vampire. He was forcibly turned and has been fighting against it for a couple of hundred years. Even his twin sister turned so that she could be with him. She has embraced the experience, he hasn't. When Aidan meets Neely, he is more sure than ever that there has to be a way to turn back into a mortal. He just has to find it. There may be a way, but it could be very painful and he will have forgotten all about vampires and his life as a vampire. Will he forget about Neely too? Neely is willing to wait for him until he can find a way. That is if she can survive that long. She also has a few problems of her own. Will they ever be together?

A different take on the vampire/mortal romance theme. In this story the hero is a vampire who desperately wants to be mortal again and the heroine is a mortal who is not overawed by the hero's impressive vampire powers, but just loves him as a person and wants what he wants, which is to be human and live out the rest of his normal lifetime together.

There is a secondary plot involving the heroine being chased by drug cartel thugs which keeps the story moving during the "daylight hours"

I enjoyed this story because it was different to others I had read where the heroine always ends up turning immortal.

This book contains descriptive love scenes.
