Gate of Myth and Power #1

The King's Captive

Rate this book
I can turn into a housecat.

It’s a fun magic, except in a world filled with vampires and werewolves, it doesn’t exactly make me a powerhouse. Instead, the supernatural community has classified me as an outcast, which means one thing: Picking on me is open season all day, every day.

The local fae are the worst of all, and it’s during one of their regular “capture the cat-girl” sessions that I shift into my cat form and meet HIM for the first time.

Noctus is so powerful his magic radiates off him like a sun, and my fae captors can barely look in his general direction. And then my life gets even more terrifying when Noctus decides to take me with him. As a pet.

Why did he pick today to “adopt don’t shop” a cat?

It gets worse when I realize he’s an elf, a ruling race of supernaturals that was supposedly killed off centuries ago.

But he’s not just any elf, no. He’s an elven king, with heaps of secrets to protect. Secrets that I am quickly learning since he includes his new pet in everything from breaking into buildings to inspect classified paperwork to tracking down sketchy supernaturals.

All this means if he gets even a hint that I’m not a real cat, I’m going to find out firsthand how elves treat their prisoners.

So, escaping Noctus is priority #1. How hard can it be? (Answer: very.)

King’s Captive is the first book in the Gate of Myth and Power urban fantasy trilogy, and is part of the Magiford Supernatural City world. It features elves, fae, werewolves, and vampires, and contains an adventure-filled and hilarious take on the Hades and Persephone myth. It’s packed with humor, battles, and a sweet, slow burn romance between an outcast magic user and the deadly king of the elves.

❝no matter the truth of what you are, you’re mine, amalourne.❞

i adore km's pg13 version of love with my whole entire being 🥹

do i care that chloe was a literal cat for, almost, the entire book? no. do i mind that noctus didn't even blink when he put it together that chloe and amalourne were one in the same? haha nope, i ate that shit up.

ask me, did i think it was borderline hilarious that noctus fell in love with chloe as a cat meanwhile chloe is still borderline afraid of him by the end of the book? why yes, yes i did.

❝you can’t just walk around carrying a cat. it’s been a while since i’ve seen society, but i know that much, at least, is true.❞
❝the café is pet friendly.❞ noctus ambled off, leaving ker and aristide behind.
aristide sighed. ❝fine, be that weirdo. i knew your long life was eventually going to make you crack. ker, find queen’s court café.❞

i think as of right now i'm excited to see how chloe and noctus interact now that the truth is out. also, that bombshell at the end. interesting.

oh and can we all just agree that noctus is the most adorable and extra cat dad? the way this man would hand feed ama was too much 🥹

❝there will be consequences to anyone who harms her.❞ he climbed the stairs to his bed and held out his fingers for me to sniff. ❝violent consequences.❞

also, i am convinced that noctus knew chloe/ama were the same cat/person from almost the jump. cause idk … that collar … i have this hunch.

my only complaint? that hideous cover. km, what are you doing? noctus was done dirrrrrty.

Hooray for finally getting around to reading my first K.M. Shea book! This book was SO FUN, and SO FUNNY. I honestly couldn't put this book down despite having to prepare for a job interview.

I had to deduct a star because the writing was a bit clumsy which made it hard for me to get into the rhythm of the story at times. There was a lot of exposition through dialogue that felt very unnatural, and I felt like everything was spelled out too clearly for the readers.

Just a word of warning... nothing even remotely romantic occurs in this book. If you've read the blurb then you'll know that the heroine has to stay as a cat to save her own life, but trust me, it made for a lot of laughs.

Apparently the next book comes out tomorrow, so yay, perfect timing, because that cliffhanger is killing me.

4.75- this was an unexpected pleasure to read. Its very clean with no steam or deviant behavior but I found that it was so interesting that it was ok. Like I was glad Noctus wasn't a whore hound that Chloe had to watch his behavior disguised as a cat. And they were unknowingly developing feelings for each other.

Chloe is a supernatural/human that can avoid certain magic and change into a cat. Not a shapeshifter, which makes this different and more convenient. No nude running around :) She is tormented by the supernatural community- but it is not clear what they do to her other than chase and catch her. More clarity about that would be good.

During one of these chases, she is caught and brought along while they did the work of their King. Noctus sees them and tells them to take a hike, but leave the cat. It seems he is strangely compelled by said cat and receives a huge amount of peace while cat is around. Glad we got some of his POV but mostly it is Chloe's that we see.

He decides to make a magical tracking collar for this cat, Ama, which leads to problems when Chloe finds a way to escape. Its really creative and I especially like the familiarity and banter:

"I’d never thought that the most dangerous situation I’d ever face in my entire life would inspire so much scoffing"- Chloe

and Noctus has his band of friends that are pretty funny:
"Would you like us to stop and search for her?”
“What?” Aristide shouted.
“He’s listening to a podcast,” Charon said.
--------
“She’s my cat,” Noctus said.
“That doesn’t give you some weird bond with her that surpasses the abilities of magic,” Aristide said. “Tell him, Charon.”
“Sir is very capable and skilled,” Charon said. “I can imagine with as much power as he has, even if it is restrained, it would be possible for him to form a bond with Ama.”
“Charon, that was the opposite of helpful,” Aristide said. “You’re fired from being the secondary voice of reason for our rag-tag band.”
---------

One huge miss for me, did he have a litter box for her to use?? No discussion of what she did to relieve herself as a cat. I do think this was important for me as the reader! Ha.

But their relationship grows:
Soaked from my nose to the tip of my tail, I sat in a plastic bin he’d put in the giant kitchen sink and glared up at him. This is so ridiculous. Not only had I failed in getting him to take the collar off—he wouldn’t even remove it now that I was sopping wet—he’d been concerned enough about Ker’s flea comments that he’d subjected me to a flea bath!
--------
Giving up my sour attitude, I sighed.
“That’s my Amalourne,” he said as he rubbed my other leg. I looked away from him.
“Don’t be like that, Amalourne,” Noctus said. “This will make you feel better.”
My ears twitched. It will not!

Some things were a little predictable, scenarios from being a pet owner. And we are left at the end with a mystery being solved and Chloe revealing herself. Looking forward to the next book!

I know, I know, I’m the odd one out on this one. I just wasn’t that into a cat shifter that becomes a pet and stays in the cat/pet form throughout the entire book. I kept waiting and wanting her to come clean and reveal herself - to the point of skimming, because just bopping around as a cat wasn’t super interesting for me.

Still, I truly enjoyed the characters, especially Noctus and Chloe. Separately they are intriguing and together they have potential to be can’t-put-down-awesome. And, now that he at least knows what she is, it should be fun!

This is my first review ever, but after finishing this book in one sitting when it came out I just have to say;
Thank You K.M. Shea!!

This is in my humble opinion her best book yet. The characters have depth, are witty and funny and it's just heartwarming to see the found family Noctus made in which Chloé just slips in as their pet. Now I am just waiting for the next installment, january 13th can't come fast enough !!

So good!

I have always enjoyed Ms. Shea's Magiford series, so I dove into this one without reading anything about it. I think it may be my favorite yet, at least Chloe is. She was a great character to follow, and I loved the unique storytelling of her being in cat form for most of the book and seeing Noctus, an elf King, caring for her as his pet. Made for some fun reading.

It does end with you wanting more but I am happy to see that the next book will be out in just a couple weeks... I suppose I can wait that long.

*My only complaint is I don't love the Noctus casting on the cover. And I hope the romance plays a bigger role in the next books.

Content Rated G
No real romance in the story, no language and very mild violence

I'm surprised how much I liked this story, because my one other book I've read by KMS I really didn't like (Red Rope of Fate).

The world building is still kind of a mystery to me, probably because I haven't read any of the other books in this series. It's one of those books where humans are aware of supernaturals and live in the same cities as them. But the supernatural world takes great pains to not let the humans see how dangerous they can be.
Chloe is an orphan who was raising in a nice human family but because of this she doesn't know much about her supernatural powers. As far as she knows, she is the only housecat-shifter... a black cat of course.

She ends up being taken in by a super powerful elf who longs for a pet cat i guess. I liked both MCs and the side characters were fun as well. Plenty of mysterious backgrounds to learn about from these characters.
Then there's a badass mysterious villain hard bent on killing her. This confuses her because she's used to being picked on by stronger supernaturals, like the Fae, but nobody has wanted her dead before.

She spends 99% of the book pretending to be the Elf's new cat, so there's not really any romantic buildup till almost the end. There's no mention of OP, so safety is quite good and if this is like the other book I read by this author, she keeps things pretty pg.

It's cute and humorous, but I could tell the author had put a lot of thought into what it would be like to be a housecat-shifter. But at the same time the writing and story telling is on the fluffy side and never pushes the reader into uncomfortable territory. No mention of litter boxes either ; )

So, so, so, so good! I ditched my responsibilities and read this the day it released.

This book is such a unique take on Hades and Persephone. The girl can shift into a cat, and that cat gets adopted by someone who is crazy powerful and she is scared to shift out of cat form to admit she's actually human. So instead she lives as a pet cat while trying to sneak out long enough to text her family to reassure them that she's still alive.

It's absolutely hilarious, as all of this author's books are. I laughed out loud SO often (the scenes were the Paragon were gut-aching hilarious!).

I can't WAIT for the next book to see where it goes after the big reveal in the last chapter of this book!

It was entertaining but I was expecting something more, I felt like it was way too slow, the fact that Chloe stays as a cat throughout the whole book makes a romance kind of impossible, and in my opinion that’s what makes KM Shea shines, so it felt a little bit boring at times.
I’m sure the next books its going to be better though.

****Actual Rating 4.5 Stars****

Another amazing Magiford book! I love the different and unique takes the author uses in each series but this one is certainly the most creative with Chloe being able to shift into a house cat along with adding elves in the mix. And somehow it really works!

I love Chloe and the way the author writes her being a cat is so fun and creative, not to mention makes her feel like a real cat to the reader as well as the other unsuspecting characters. Noctus is another “brooding bad boy” type of character but has such a heart for his people and friends, and I love how this author writes “brooding bad boys” as actual people with complex emotions outside their broodiness, lol. And this friend group is so fun and I love them all! Not to mention when they’re all out being detectives it’s hilarious, lol!

The two separate plot lines were woven together really well, and I’m curious to see if we’ll actually get some answers about the hidden organization that’s been causing issues throughout all the Magiford books so far. Seems like we might, but also might not just yet—who really knows? Either way I’ll be happy to keep reading this new series until the end!

The plot line of this book is so odd, yet absolutely the sweetest at the same time! I loved every minute of it (like all the Magiford series) and can’t wait for book two!

A fairly entertaining and quick read.

The FMC could’ve been smarter, the book could’ve been shorter, personally I didn’t enjoy how trapped the FMC is the entirety of the book. I didn’t mind that she was a cat the entire time, thus no real romance evolved. It would’ve been easy to want to rush it and I’m glad the author didn’t.

I’m jumping right into the second book where I hit the FMC is smarter and gets a damn backbone.

4 stars!

A good start to my 2025 reading year! I enjoyed the story from Chloe's cat perspective more than I thought I would. If you're looking for banter with a hidden identity, intense chases and detective scenes (+a FMC tempted by donuts because same), then this is the book/series for you.

So amazing

Yes!! I absolutely love this author. Not only are the series amazing, but she doesn't make us wait ridiculous 9months- to over a year for the next installments. I seriously respect K.m. Shea for her classy ways, and amazing book writing skills. We are back, and with the elves! I knew already this was gonna be great. But oh, I was on the edge of my seat seeing how this was all gonna play out. This book was crazy funny from start to finish. Ama, aka Chloe inner monologue had me in stitches. I can't wait to read what happens next

2.5 stars rounded up.

I kept wanting to edit this book. Too many scenes didn’t progress the story. What happens at the end should have come way earlier. We barely get to see any of the fallout we’ve trudged through a whole book to see. Way too much repetition and a protagonist that makes dumb decisions to serve the plot.

Best magiford book yet

I have loved all the Magiford books, but this might take the cake for me. I absolutely loved the MC, and basically every other character. I had my doubts about an MC who has to be a cat for most of the story when I read the blurb, but really--it was super well written and highly entertaining. I am now dying for the next book!!

Do yourself a favor and ignore the cover and official book description. This book is a delight. It's not a generic urban fantasy even though the cover & description lead you to think otherwise.

Premise: A girl who can transform into a cat accidentally gets adopted by the local elven king. Whoopsie 🤭

There's also a mystery about exploding magical artifacts, but the true entertainment is her hijinks as a cat.

There's zero romance (since she's stuck as a cat) and I'm okay with it, because the cat antics are 10/10. I'm worried that the next book will have less cat, but maybe there will be spicy romantic tension instead 😜

I mean it was entertaining that the main character was a cat 99% of the story. I was highly irritated by the dude’s name. Noctus? Mmmmkay. Funny and easy story to pass the time. Also, who does the cover designs, because this one is awful 😂

I don’t understand the good reviews on this book.

The heroine stayed a cat the whole book, listening to conversations and eating. The hero did some hero things that I really didn’t care about and some petting of the cat. Okay.

When I read a book, I want the heroine to be fierce and a badass that makes the story interesting with many twists. I don’t expect the whole book to be from the point of view of the heroine who’s a cat that just listens to others story? It was so boring.

Also, there were a few chapters from the hero’s point of view that just made me rolled my eyes: he is supposed so be an elf king that lived for centuries and rules a secret kingdom… and his only concern is a random cat he stole for reasons we don’t even know? Huh? Plus, he looks so stupid not knowing she’s a supernatural!

What the hell did I just read?

It was fun, though Chloe is weirdly slow on the uptake at some points, and at others she's super smart and on the ball.

Like, despite Noctus calling himself a Kingslayer, it took her FOREVER to put together what happened in the war. And the why is fairly obvious too - he clearly sided against the elves.

But then conversely, she figured out what was going on with the artifacts and even where their base is SUPER fast. But believably fast. Like, I had niggles too after the explosion she heard.

Because of that it sometimes felt disjointed to me.

It was still fun, though, and I've already started book 2.
