Many Christians are trapped by the fear that their salvation is in some way dependent on how they behave. Here R.T. Kendall encourages those caught in legalism as he presents the doctrine of eternal security embodied in the cry "Once saved, always saved!" This does not mean that behavior does not matter. Secure in our salvation, Kendall shows us the need for Godly fear in the light of the judgment seat of Christ.
Very misleading book on assurance, removes the the role of holiness in assurance as taught in 1 John. Very selective use of Bible passages. Worth remembering that this book caused RT's elders to try remove him on charges of Antinomianism. Not the same theology as RT's predecessor Lloyd Jones.
n this book R.T. Kendall puts together a convincing case for the biblical doctrine of the perseverence of the saints. There is also a remarkable personal testimony as to why he - originally from a very different theological background - came to believe this doctrine is true.
But the book is not just about intellectual assent to doctrine. It is a practical book, and the practical thrust of what he writes is assurance. For Kendall, belief in this doctrine is exactly what it says on the tin. If we are saved, we know that we are saved in eternity, and this doctrine is tremendously reassuring, liberating - to some it is scandalous, but for Kendall that is the point. It is grace in action.
Regardless of your position on the issue, this is a book to read.
Easy to read short book about a really debated topic. R.T. Kendall gives you a good, and in my opinion, a well balanced overview. I highly recommend this book.
