The Morganville Vampires #1-2

The Morganville Vampires, Volume 1

Rate this book
In Rachel Caine's town of Morganville, "there's always a surprise just around every dark corner" - and it usually involves the undead. Now these secrets come to light in the first two books of the Morganville Vampires series, together in one volume.

GLASS HOUSES
Morganville is a small college town in the heart of Texas that has its share of quirky characters - and some evil ones too. When student Claire Danvers moves off campus into one of Morganville's oldest houses, she finds that her roommates don't show many signs of life. But they'll have Claire's back when the town's deepest secrets come crawling out, hungry for fresh blood.

THE DEAD GIRLS' DANCE
Claire Danvers has her share of challenges - like living among creatures of the night. On the upside, she has a great roommate (who tends to disappear at sunup) and a new boyfriend. Now a fraternity is throwing its annual Dead Girls' Dance and - surprise! - Claire and her equally outcast friend have been invited. When they find out why, all hell breaks loose, because this time both the living and the dead are ready to tear up the night.

Okay, okay, I realize I give a lot of the books I read five stars, but what can I say, I love every one of them. Maybe it's because I pick really great books or my friends recommend them to me. Either way, I give this one 5 stars as well.
The pretense was not what I expected, in a good way. I expected the vampires to be nice....uh...NO.
I expected the residents in the Glass House to be vampires....uh.....NO.
I expected Claire to have special abilities.....uh.....NO.
I expected Shane to have a deep dark secret....uh.....okay, I got that one right.
And don't get me started on Michael. Big fat twist!
The mean girls aren't just mean. They're deadly!
This book was a page-turning thrill ride and after I finished it, I went to the store and bought volumes 2 and 3.
I would highly recommend this book. Anyone who enjoyed Twilight will eat this one up.

I wanted to like this one. I really did. It seemed like it was made for me. Morganville? Morgan? You can't ignore the connection. But sadly I was disappointed.

The volume I read was an omnibus of the first two books. I wish I just would've bought the first one. The series is about Claire Danvers, a 16 yr old student living in the college town of Morganville. She moves into the Glass House, but not all her roommates might be living. She soon finds out that Morganville is no ordinary college town, but one infested with vampires.

I strongly disliked Claire. Very strongly. I mean, what was the purpose of making her 16? To make her even more annoying?? She was immature and whiny and......*simmers down*. In the second book, all the other characters were like "Oh, what happened to the little mousy girl?", I would go "She's right here guys. Just because its a new book doesn't mean she underwent a personality change."

The other characters were somewhat unlikable. Out all of them, I liked Michael the best. I wish he could have been the love interest. Which brings me to Shane......I just don't get his appeal. He's just some hotheaded "gorgeous" guy. I don't like him. I wish he would have been torched. Him and Claire were just so awkwardly matched. It seemed forced to me. After little to no interaction, Claire is all up in his lap calling him her boyfriend (although that didn't stop her from going on that date with Ian). The romance between them was gag-worthy, honestly. The whole "let's play baseball thing". Yuck. And of course they can't really do it, because of the age difference. Gotta build up that sexual tension.

And, sorry for all the people who liked this series, I'm going to be hatin' on the writing now. It was bad. Real bad. It didn't make any sense. It was in third person, but wanted to be in first person. Pick a POV already!!! I had the most difficul time trying to figure out who was speaking or acting at any given time. And Caine would put random words in italics to prove a point. They were everywhere.

And some of the action didn't have a purpse. It seems Caine would just get bored and go "hhhmmmm, let's go over here now so we can over-complicate things!!"

The main problem was I never was emotionally invested enough. I didn't care what happened. It never held me in suspense. I was just waiting for it to be over.

So, I was totally srprised by how much I LOVED these books! I checked them out of my library warily because I've been so burned out on vampires after the recent craze in YA books. I didn't read these when they first came out, so I figured I would give them a shot. I am SO GLAD that I did! These books are really funny and smart, they have romance AND action both (LOTS of both!) so they could appeal to many different people. I was surprised how real the characters seemed to me. I like that Claire is practically a genius, but she doesn't think she knows everything. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series that have been published so far. I will wait for the ones yet to be published eagerly. I would recommend this series to anyone that likes well-written supernatural fiction. Bonus factor is that this is in a college setting rather than high school! I will most DEFINITELY be buying my own copies of these books and will re-read them many times! :)

This was my favorite series when I was much younger and upon a reread I discovered a few things that bothered me so much that I just can’t decide if I gave it four stars objectively or out of nostalgia. Definitely the first book (Glass House) is great, no complaints there. A bit of older YA, so just go into it knowing that.
But there’s a few problematic things that happen in book two that make me very iffy about it. Let’s just say it doesn’t handle mentions of SA very well? It just kind of skims over the problems and doesn’t dive into them as deep as it should. If it’s not going to be condemned more in the book to make sure everyone understands that it’s BAD then it shouldn’t be mentioned at all, especially since it really wasn’t necessary… I’m very torn about it. I don’t think it’s a bad book and that the concept was bad in general, I just wish it would’ve done more to condemn the situation and people that did certain things.

I love Rachel Caine! Her books are like brain candy. I
gobble them up and can't get my fill! Perfect beach reads. I love the characters. I can't wait to spend 13 more books with them! I don't understand how I'm so late coming to this series. It's paranormal with vampires in Texas and a brainy girl facing off with all the supernatural I adore! So much happens and I'm always on the edge of my seat holding my breath! And the endings. Cliffhangers that make me grab the next book. The books are smooth reads that fly by. Seriously fast fun reads!!!

can one author PLEASE write a college aged-or older- vampire story? 16 year olds don't belong in college.

Read more bookish goodness on my book blog: Cal's YA Reads

4/5 stars.

Okay so this book started off as a 2/5 stars, but slowly reached a 4 stars. That's pretty impressive, but I'm determined to give this series a go as a friend of mine gave all of her copies to me for free.

Claire is the worst protag for the first bit, but finally develops a personality by the second book (I read a '2 in 1' Volume).

I honestly believed Michael was going to be Claire's love interest, so I have a bit of underlying disappointment. We are teased constantly from Claire's thoughts… and poof-- He ends up with Eve??? Even though it was established at the start that she had a crush on Shane?

I thought the Glass House roommates (Eve, Shane and Michael) were A LOT like Alice, Emmett, and Edward (before I realised he wasn't the main love interest). That's all I see them as, really.

I found it really interesting how Claire struggles with Monica. It was nice, as weird as it is to say, to see bullying exist in current books. I usually never come across it, except for my dear love; Vampire Academy (with the dreaded Mia-- or shall we say; Mee-UGH). Monica was a hardcore bully too-- not just usual bitchy queens with simple words. It's awful what she did but I like the writing! Well done, Caine.

I'll read the following sequels, for sure. It's not something I'm terribly invested in. That may be because I'm so disappointed at Shane being the love interest--- AFTER ALL THAT BUILD UP OF HIM VIEWING HER LIKE A SISTER, frankly; I'm disgusted. Ohhhh well. Embrace the cliches, I tell myself, this is a moderately decent vampire series.

I actually never heard of the MORGANVILLE VAMPIRES before, and I picked up this book because, honestly, I liked the cover. It was pretty and a little mysterious and dark and I knew it obviously had something to do with vampires.

I wasn't sure I was going to like it at first and I was glad when I had the first two books in one, because I really did like it. Claire is smart, Eve is funny, Shane is the tough guy, and Michael is basically the head of it all, and they all connect so well together, it was wonderful.

There were a lot of portions I laughed, and some parts where I literally thought that this should not belong in the YA section. The plot-line feels unbelievably complex but when when paying attention it's actually just really well planned out. The books aren't too long and their not too short, and there's actual character development throughout.

I had moments where my jaw dropped, I was scared, and I was biting my nails in anticipation. I was sad when it ended and was ready to rush out to get the next volume, but I don't have it yet.

The story didn't go too fast nor too slow, and the world that Rachel made was fantastic. Again, I'm sure I'm one of the few people left in this world who has yet to read it, but I'm glad I did. I also love how Rachel ends each book with a cliffhanger of sorts.

Twisted, dark, mysterious, and funny. If you have yet to get this book, it is highly recommended that you do. You will not regret it.

I have to be honest...I didn't like this nearly as much as I had hoped I would. Maybe due to the over-exaggerated hype. The first book was torture really but I didn't want to give up too quickly so I stuck with it to read the 2nd book which was in my opinion better than the 1st but still not mind blowing like I was told it would be. Bummed I didn't like it more but I'm not giving up. I have volume 2 on my shelf so I'll keep going if for no other reason than to see what happens to Shane and Claire.

RATING: 4 STARS!!

GLASS HOUSES

I really liked the title of this book, in relation to the story, the first book in the kick vampire butt , series. It had a couple meanings, you will have to read the book to find out.

Who knew having your laundry stolen would turn into 11 titled books , to date. ( Bite Club # 10, releases May 2nd 2011, Last Breath # 11 , releases 1st November 2011)

Claire Danvers, female lead, 16 nearly 17yrs old ( she likes to remind Shane & Michael), has got herself in a rather deadly pickle with Monica Morell , ( queen bitchie) on her campus. It doesn’t take much to be targeted by Monica and the Monickettes and she doesn’t forgive or forget , she will hunt you down and inflict pain..... or worse.

Cue missing laundry....

Survival mode kicks in and Claire takes charge of her battered life and answers an advert to share accommodation.

Enter , Eve , the gothic chick, Shane and the mysterious Michael who brings a whole new meaning to the graveyard shift.

Eve, has quite a casual attitude towards the dangers lurking, until she realises how close to her doorstep they really are. She has a good heart, maybe too trustworthy. Eve works nights at ‘Common Ground’ cafe, her ‘hippee’ boss Oliver, is always looking out for her.

Michael is the head of the house and the mature, sensible one. Shane appears a bit of a slacker, but he will have your back if you need it.

The small College town of Morganville is not what it seems. It has very, very dark secrets. Morganville is not safe after dark, unless you have protection, even that can be revoked.

Shane has seen some very dark days of his own and only knows too well the dangers, lurking. Claire is oblivious but is a fast learner. She has to be.

Shane isn’t looking for trouble, Claire can’t help but bring trouble, now Shane is endeavouring to keep them both out of trouble. Mysterious Michael can only do so much.

There’s something the vampires want, Claire pulls a Nancy Drew, does some creative snooping, all is revealed, so she thinks... who knew going to College was this difficult.

I really enjoyed Glass Houses. There were a couple wobbly bits in the storyline, but hey , 10 books later Rachel is still writing this series, obviously the storyline really grows and the characters really grow.

There is no real romance, some looks between characters, hand holding, bit of smooching, but Claire is ‘jail bait’ , so understandable.

‘Glass Houses’ , is more world building, getting to know the characters, establishing why humans even live in Morganville when they know vampires rule Morganville .

The latter half of the book, the pace really picked up and the ending, AAGGghhhGGhhh!! Bit of a cliffhanger.

I usually have a Team guy that is on my t-shirt by the end of a book. I don't really have my Team guy from this book...hopefully I will have a Team guy by end of The Dead Girls Dance....* walks off ..sad face* ..teamless...hee..hee.

I’m glad I have 8 more books lined up ready to read, no waiting!!! Plus ‘Bite Club ‘ releasing May 2nd 2011.

I can’t wait to read how the story unfolds and grows in Rachel’s vampire town and where she takes her characters . I’ve already cracked open book # 2 , ‘The Dead Girls Dance’....... intriguing title.

THE DEAD GIRL'S DANCE

RATING: 4 DANGEROUS STARS!!!

I couldn’t help thinking when reading this 2nd instalment in The Morganville Vampires series that I would have liked part of this book to have been tacked onto ‘Glass Houses’, to me personally , it would have given me that extra character depth I was missing from ‘Glass Houses’. Mind you my thoughts are quite redundant in a way as I have no great time lapse between the next 9 books. I can just merrily read one after the other so my thoughts are cleared up almost straight away. Let me explain myself better. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I am currently reading the books in volumes = 2 books per volume. So it’s kind of like I am reading one big book with a bit of an interval in between. I really enjoyed ‘Glass Houses’, but what I read in ‘The Dead Girls’ Dance’, had some great character depth with Shane that I was missing from ‘Glass Houses’. I really ‘felt’ Shane as a character better in ‘The Dead Girls’ Dance’, amongst other things. If Glass Houses had been longer I would have been more satisfied with book 1. I really enjoyed book 1 , but I ‘felt’ book 2 and its characters much better.

There is a whole lot of suspense, anxious moments in ‘The Dead Girl’s Dance’. I really wanted to slap Monica and the Monickettes, HARD!! These girls are uber dangerous. Crikey, they needed to be pulled off that pedestal.

Shane’s father , I can understand his state of mind with his daughter and wife, but I think his mind may have crossed the line into forgetting he has a son, somebody that he should be loving ,not pushing away with blind fury and possibly ending up a bit unstable in the brain department. His devotion to his cause is getting out of control. It’s hurting who he should love, deeply and his methods!!!

I love Eve, even more in this book. She is just a wonderful character who will do anything for anybody in the house, if they are in danger or need her help. She is a stand up character, she has your back.

Amelie is an intriguing character. I feel safe with her, but should I?

I really like the human detectives Lowe and Hess. They helped me to believe that all is not corrupt amongst the humans living in Morganville. There is hope that humans can help each other, aren't afraid to try and do the small bit they can.

The storyline was fast paced , exciting, suspenseful, dangerous and I really enjoyed it. There was some romance, more hot smooches, relationships are forming. We learn more of the magic, I suppose you could say, of the vampire world.

I am a titles girl. I like the title of books to mean something to the story. The Dead Girl’s Dance, is a real cool title, but it was such a small part of the story. When I read the title of the book I imagined something a lot different, lol!! Just a personal observation.

Claire’s character had me just so anxious in his book, as she ran from person to person trying to get the help she needed. I felt as desperate as she felt. I was there for Claire..loL!! I was egging her on. When one dead end faced her, she looked for another opening, anything that would help Shane. I was even trying to think how to get Shane out of his pickle. Rachel had me turning the pages feverishly as I hoped for a solution, but kept getting dead ends for Shane’s safety.

Michael, what has he gone and done!!!

What will Claire do to keep everybody safe????

When reading , I felt like Morganville was the only place on earth. Everyone is surviving Morganville and it’s dangers. I didn’t feel like any other place existed, but Morganville.

Rachel has me trapped ...lol!! I can’t even imagine where the next 8 books will take me. * whispers* I don’t think I will be leaving Morganville ........

Vampires in Texas, I was interested, but it wasn't what I was expecting. Glass House was interesting enough for me to read Dead Girl's Dance, but it was hard to finish DGD. The problem I couldn't get over the main character's age. It was uncomfortable, and honeslty wasn't important. She could have been older, and it would have been fine. I know there are more books in the series, but I'm tapping out.

This book is amazing i absolutely loved it there wasn't any parts were it was boring or made me want to stop reading and i could not put this book down. Claire is a person that people can relate to cause people treated her like a kid but she became very responsible and very helpful to her housemates and got the attention of a lot of vampires and she was bullied a lot for a small thing that she did so she became very popular and wanted by vampires in morgansville.

ATTENTION VAMPIRE LOVERS: Keep in mind that in this series vampires are no good!

"She dug in her backpack, found her cell phone, and checked for coverage. It was kind of lame in Morganville, truthfully, out in the middle of the prarie, in the middle of Texas, which was about as middle of nowhere as it was possible to get unless you wanted to go to Mongolia or something...."

"Run first," Shane said. "Mourn later."It was the perfect motto for Morganville."

Could it be any harder, do The Calling, no random!).

“Okay, this was kissing. Serious kissing. Not just a kiss before moving out, not a good-bye, this was Hello, sexy, and wow, she’d never even suspected that it could feel this way.”

5/5 ♥

"Shane - who knows about Shane? Planet Shane is a lovely place a long way from here.”

Love always,
Francielle

Oh, vampires. It sounds cliche nowadays, doesn't it? Well, this book puts a whole new perspective to vampires. Sure, it has the usual things with them; bloodsucking, burning in sunlight, holy water, crosses, silver, etc. But I thought it was cool how they made a contract with someone that binds them to that vampire forever, or until they say so. They have to abide by their rules, who to marry, when to get married, if you can have children or not. It's pretty intense if you ask moi. I know it's weird when I say it's cool, but it's new. I like new stuff. :3 Especially with vampires...since they're so cliche now. Thanks, Stephenie Meyer.

I really liked the fact that Michael was a...ghost thing...in the beginning. I've had this series on my shelf for a long time now, and I thought he was a vampire this whole time. I was going on what people said about the series and stuff, and that's what I got out of it lol. So that put a cog in my wheel lol. But then it started to turn in the second part of the book. (Meaning the second book since there's two books in one.) Michael was a sweetheart on up in the book. I didn't like him at first, since he was being an asshole to Claire about moving into their mansion that looks like "Gone with the Wind meets The Munsters." :P

And when I say "their mansion," I mean by the trio that lives there. Shane, Eve, and Michael. And I love Shane. The end. He's just...urgh. I love him. xD Eve is an awesome character. She has to be the second character that I've "met" that's a pure Goth, if you will. LOL. I loved her, she was funny. <3 Also, can I say that I will NEVER remotely like Monica...EVER...AT ALL? I don't give a shit if she sprouts wings and turns into an angel and saves everybody at the end of the series. I will forever hate that bitch. :) I was on Eve's side when she said, "Maybe she does deserve a good blowtorching." And Claire's like, "No. Nobody deserves that." And I'm sitting here like: Photobucket

I was about to die towards the end when Shane . I about cried myself to death. I really love Shane, I just hope he doesn't piss me off in the books to come in this series.

Okay. I'm done. All-in-all this was a fantastic book. I can't wait to read the next ones! I pretty much recommend this book to anyone who likes vampires. On the cover of the omnibus that I have, it says, "Fans of Twilight will love this." ...Sure, that's true. But this is nothing close to Twilight, just so you know. It's a WHOLE LOT BETTER. :D

The story takes place in a Texas small town Morganville, unbeknownst to outsiders, the town was secretly ran by vampires and humans were treated as second class citizens and bloodbank on two legs. The heroine Claire was a very smart 16 years old girl leaving home to study in an university next to Morganville, only to find herself the easy target of school bullies and worse, she was also being dragged into the troubles between vampires and humans in town. Luckily she wasn’t alone, Claire found her sanctuary in The Glass House, and a small band of ‘free’ humans (who didn’t take protection and orders from vampires) Michael Glass, the current young owner of the Glass House; Eve the friendly Goth girl, Shane the hothead guy with a painful past.

It’s a nice story, with a crew of likable, down to earth characters, who were being pushed through one deadly situation after another. The troubles which the residents in the Glass House had gotten themselves into are too many that it is almost humorous (in a good way). And I really like how the author wrote her vampires, they were brutal, cunning and at some point very cold blooded, but their characters were built that way with reasons, and you soon can tell the truly evil ones from the rest. The vampires aren’t all bad but they are not humans’ harmless best friends either. I think it’s what made Rachel Caine’s novels realistic

The human characters are as well written as the vampires too. After reading the books you almost hope you have friends like Michael, Eve and Shane. Claire…she is okay but I think she’s too stubborn to a point of pathetic when she foolishly kept insisting on going to school when she knew her life is in danger. The same thing happened too many times and you have to start wonder why that supposedly smart girl seemingly still hadn’t learned her lesson.

I also like how love relationships and sex are handled in the story. Hell, at least no one is dying to be turned into a vampire after she realizes her boyfriend had become a member of the undead.

On the backcover of the novel, there was a quote from SFX Magazine: DUMP MEYER’S TWILIGHT BOOKS AND REPLACE THEM WITH THE MORGANVILLES. I really, really can’t agree more!

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS SO BACK OFF BEFORE YOU HATE ME SO MUCH.

I actually read this book two years ago. I reread the book yesterday and finished it this morning. What makes it so special that I keep reading this series is that IT IS SO DIFFERENT FROM TWILIGHT /YAS FINALLY I WANNA SEE OTHER VAMPIRES' POV FGS/

I kinda like how the whole 'Protection' thing is going on in the story. I really like how the houses in the Morganville use 'permissions' to welcome their guests. That is freaking awesome; and let say you hate your guests, you can at anytime revoke the house access from your guests and automatically your guests will be kicked out from your house /I REALLY LIKE THE HOUSES, ESPECIALLY THE GLASS HOUSE/

I SHIP CLAIRE AND SHANE OMG THEY'RE SO FUDGING CUTE LIKE SO CUTE WHEN I'M PICTURING THEM TOGETHER. As for Eve and Michael, yeah yeah whatever I don't mind anything. Do whatever you guys want hahaha.

Okay so here's the bad part. I was expecting the Michael 'changing' moment to be sooooo epic and bizarre. Like he's trembling for life or gasping for air that obviously he's the one who has the problem while we horrendously looking at him; waiting and hoping that he will not die, fuh. But instead they skip that part badly and how they settle the so-called ceremony is just by letting Michael sucking on the founder's blood. What? Sucks!!!!

But I think the most heartbreaking moment is when she opt for the founder's offer to claim safety for her and her friends. How brave of her. Even though the scene is just merely a page but I really understand the feeling, the intense going on.

All in all, I give this book 4.3 stars! Keep up!

I was immediately attracted by this book. Somehow, I feel connected to the protagonist, Claire Danvers because of her geeky (and a little bit nerdy) style. I'd also like to compliment the cover - it's really eye-catching

Rachel is really good at delivering the story, because she makes me feel the anger, worries and fear of the characters in the story. The characters are well-developed and I can get an exact idea of their personalities. You will find out that you must keep on reading to unravel the mystery behind all the strange, unusual happenings. And when you do, somehow you'll feel like there's more to come. I didn't realize the who bad guy was at the beginning, because he seems so bright, cheerful and warm. I guess we can't judge a person by his appearance. Rachel also introduced vampire politics, in which influential vampires have great power and high statuses. Humans (such as cops) actually have to put themselves at the vampires' disposal. Now this is something new to me.

In The Dead Girls' Dance, there are some dangerous situations. Shane is wrongly accused of killing a vampire and is to be burned to death. Claire and her friends has to race against time to find a way to rescue Shane. I'm really impressed when I read about how Claire fought back when she was nearly raped by a gang of good-for-nothings, even when she was drugged at that time. I'm curious to see what will happen next!

In a nutshell, this novel is suspenseful, fast-paced and exciting. Highly recommended to teenagers who love reading about the undead.

Ohhhh my gosh this book had me pulling out my hair. I don't bash books or authors because I don't have a talent for writing so I read.. But this book was really really really and I mean really lame. If your bored and you don't have anything better to read then pick up this book but if you have something better around you then don't. I got tired of Claire fast. All you hear is about how smart she is blah blah blah. The little kid was always in some kind of trouble or opening her mouth when she shouldn't. And the plot.. Could we please not do the isolated town run by vampires? That sounded stupid? It was stupid. It had potential. And this could have been a great story if it wasn't in 3rd person pov. And the whole jailbait love story. OMFGEE was sooo annoying and ignorant. And the killer barbies? Are you serious? Morganville = evil Morgan.. Dumb. I didn't care about any of the characters at all. In fact I hope they kill Eve, Claire, and Shane off. Michael was the only sensible one out of them all. But I guess I enjoy torture because I will be buying the rest of the books just to see if they get any better.
