Gatekeepers - The Quest for Clues to an Age-Old Riddle

Rate this book
Set Set in a small coastal village in Ghana, “Gatekeepers” explores the coming of the World-Saviour of the end times from the perspective of six World Religions; demonstrates the essential oneness of the Religions; and makes a case for unity amongst the followers of these Religions in the search for this divine world Figure.

The story unfolds with the arrival, from the US, of Kojo Apiata and his American wife, at his ancestral home of Bibiriba, on the shores of Ghana, for what was intended to be a short visit. Little did he imagine then, that he would be entrusted with the affairs of this remote community as the village Chief, and that those affairs would draw him slowly but inexorably into the vortex of a search for the Promised Redeemer of the end times, a search that was soon to widen to assume global dimensions...

In 1984, Kojo Apiata and his American wife Sue, return to Kojo’s homeland of Bibiriba, Ghana to bury his father. Kojo’s father was the village chief and Kojo assumes his younger brother will take over the role after Kojo returns to America. To his surprise, Sue, urges Kojo to stay and help the villagers improve their lives. Many months after Kojo has become chief, a widow named Mama Mansa tells Kojo that he needs to incorporate spirituality into the lives of his people because prosperity has created crime and lives without meaning. After much thought, consultation and a gathering of minds representing the six largest religions, The Glory Project is born. Its purpose is to watch for the coming of The Desired One, or what Christians would call the second coming of Christ. Needless to say, the project has its ups and downs and dissenters, but gradually it evolves into something quite special.

Gatekeepers: The Quest for Clues to an Age-Old Riddle is a unique work of fiction that takes a philosophical, nonjudgmental look at spiritual beliefs united for a common purpose. The story is told from an omniscient POV, producing a gentle, almost fable-like quality to the story. The book clearly makes one think about faith and the possibilities if the world’s religious leaders decided to work together toward the same goals.

The story’s strong premise doesn’t leave a lot of room for character development and while readers are allowed inside Kojo’s head, it is much less so for Sue and others except through dialogue. There are many Biblical quotations throughout the book, yet they do address key issues. Anyone seeking a thoughtful story about spirituality and possibilities, would enjoy Kobina Amissah Fynn’s novel.
