Wyatt (wait) up until I park my horse and I’ll be back to review.

I took on an exchange challenge to read something VERY different to what I normally read, and so I accepted the blind date with the stud in the saddle. A character type I’ve never met before. So I was hopeful!!!

No yee-haw here I’m afraid but that’s mainly because I didn’t connect or like the MC and I wanted more ‘Wild West’, and the cowboy story. It did have a lot of relationship obstacles to overcome which gave some substance to the story but I won’t be getting back onto this saddle any time soon.

Personally I think this is going to appeal to a smaller audience but those that do like this are scoring very high so please don’t take my word for this. Please read other reviews if you are tempted with the ‘cowboy’ theme.

Now for the challenge back to my friend 😁

Not my favorite of the Rough Riders series, but not to worry--it's like saying I prefer Oreos to Chips Ahoy.:) I mean, I enjoy everything Lorelei James writes, but there were other books in this series that captivated me a little more. If I can pinpoint one thing about this book that kept it from being a 5 star read, it was probably the character of wounded war vet Cameron McKay. Not until late in the book did I "fall in love" with his character, and throughout the book he had some moments that ticked me off. I can't get too specific without giving away spoilers, but sometimes his attitude just rubbed me the wrong way. I didn't care for how he treated his family, didn't like his initial treatment of the little boy Anton, didn't like how he kept putting off telling Domini (the heroine) his feelings for her...I could go on. He had a little bit of the self-pity thing going on (never attractive in a romance hero), along with some anger issues--all perfectly understandable considering what he went through in the war, but I was still waiting for him to snap out of it and get his head on straight. Thank God he finally let Domini Katzinski into his life, because I don't know where he would've ended up without her.

The book starts with Cam (who's working as a Sheriff's deputy) and Domini (a beautiful, reserved, Ukranian immigrant who runs the local diner) finally getting together after circling each other for two years. At first, Cam is reluctant (even though he's been lusting after Domini) to start something, because he thinks Domini won't be able to handle his 'dominant' bedroom ways. Silly man. Domini longs to be submissive, and she's more than ready to let big bad Cam have his way with her. Neither has designs on marriage, so this affair should suit each of them. And it does. Cam and Domini have no trouble at all in the bedroom, exploring all sexual possibilities (even having a one-time ménage with Cam's best buddy), and Domini even gets Cam to relax around her and trust her enough to talk about his devastating war injuries and how they make him feel like less of a man. So everything is going good with them (even though Domini is keeping a big secret from Cam), but then a tragic accident forces them to make a decision about how far they want their relationship to go. Are they ready to take the next step?

I have to give Lorelei James some credit. This could have been your typical injured war vet/ beautiful girl who makes him whole story. This one had a lot more going on. Domini and Cam had lots of baggage, lots of issues to sort through, and their journey was not an easy one. They were each vulnerable in their own way, and had issues with trust and open communication. They had some difficult challenges to face, and the way they handled them made the characters seem more real. Yes, there were times that I thought a good therapist was what they really needed, rather than another roll in the hay, but where would Romance be without those steamy interludes? Both Cam and Domini's characters changed and grew as the story progressed, and I respected them. Cam started out as a solitary, isolated from his family charcter, and with the quiet strength and love from Domini, regained his feelings of self-worth and became a man who was easy to love. I believed in Cam and Domini as a couple, and when they finally communicated their feelings to each other (*sigh*), well, all was right in my world.

So, they may not have been my favorite couple in this series (Cam was no Kade (Tied Up, Tied Down) and this was not my favorite book (Cowgirl Up and Ride), but it was still a good one, and it actually got much better as the story progressed. There's your typical LJ molten hot sex scenes, there's some tragedy, some angst, some secrets, some learning to get along, some "aww" moments, and a very hopeful HEA and an epilogue that cements Cam and Domini's future. Of course there's plenty of McKays who pop up along the way, so be sure to have the latest version of the McKay family tree nearby (available at Lorelei James's website) or you'll be saying "Huh? Who's that?" There's also a little teaser set-up of the next book (All Jacked Up) about the lone McKay sister (Keely) and the man who (it looks like) she can't stand--can't wait to see how that turns out! 4 1/2 stars

Warning: This book contains explicit sex and language, including oral and anal; a ménage scene, and some light bondage. Not for the faint of heart.

Opening Line: "At times like these, Deputy Cameron KcKay suspected his life would've been easier if he'd stayed a simple cowboy."

As I’ve said before Lorelei James can do no wrong with her Roughriders series. Somehow she always manages to keep the storylines fresh and the numerous sexcapes just different enough that they never feel formulaic or repetitive. We’re also guaranteed updates on the ever growing Mckay family and usually a couple of surprises or a tragedy just to keep us on our toes. Of course theres always all kinds of hot and sexy love-making goin on but ultimately it’s the addictive stories and sweet romances that keep me coming back for more.

Here with book 7 we finally get smoking hot ex-soldier Cam and Ukraine transplant Domini’s story. These two have been circling around each other for several years/books now but because both are dealing with physical and emotional scars, forging a relationship has proved difficult. Cam’s also worried that his need for dominance in the bedroom will scare away the soft spoken and shy Domini. However once he learns that’s exactly what she’s looking for all bets are off. Domini craves a man that will dominate her in every way and that’s exactly what she’s going to get with Cam. This is one soldier used to issuing orders.

Their relationship starts out more like a business arrangement than a love affair with rules discussed regarding the Dom/sub parameters, birth control and what they’re going to tell people regarding their dating status. However it soon blossoms into a true partnership with depth, understanding and value. And as soon as this couple can stop keeping secrets, truly baring themselves they’ll heal each others wounds inside and out.

I’d been looking forward to Cam’s story ever since he was injured inRough, Raw and Ready returning to Mckay country as deputy for the local sheriffs department. And just as I knew I would, I fell hard for this damaged ex-soldier. Cam’s body image issues and PTSD haven’t been glazed over here and they're dealt with in a realistic manner. He doesn’t want anyone’s pity and his subsequent seclusion from the family, inability to ask for help, fear of falling, nightmares and even allowing Domini to see him naked during sex (or his missing leg at all) are believable yet heartbreaking.

My only issue (maybe that’s not the right word because I sure as hell enjoyed it) would be the bizarre 3-way thrown in with Cam’s mysterious military buddy. This character and ménage came out of nowhere and seemed not only gratuitous but didn’t add anything to their story either IMHO.

So I’m not going to give away the plot because as usual tons of shit happens and it was so much fun discovering it as I went along. I’ll just say this was another great read that (as always) left me wanting more. Cheers

Cam McKay, I love you just the way you are.

Cam McKay was imposing, even in near darkness. The dominant male animal. The ultimate guardian. A pillar of strength. A bona fide warrior.

This was one emotional ride, I would gladly take over and over again. Love it!

3 ½ stars. If you’re in the mood for hot wild fun sex, this should work. It’s enjoyable. Relationship development is good.

REVIEWER’S OPINION:
There was nothing insulting, none of my pet peeves. It works for what it is - erotic romance. There is a lot of sex, bossy caveman style. Cam gives a lot of orders for example he says: upstairs, now, get naked, wait for me. That’s the flavor. There is rear door activity and a ménage scene, two men and a woman. The first 60% of the book is getting to know each other and smokin’ hot sex. The last 40% is more of a story. It’s about growth and change through tragedy, insecurities, and family relationships.

This is one in the McKay family series. Each brother and one sister have their own book. But each can be read as a stand-alone.

Minor annoyance with the publisher Samhain: The cover is hot and really good. I love “her abs.” But the models don’t match the characters. Domini has white blond hair, cover girl has dark hair. It peeks out from under her hat. Cam has chest hair, cover guy has none. It disappoints me. Are there no models out there with chest hair?

STORY BRIEF:
Domini is an orphan from the Ukraine who now works as a chef in a Wyoming restaurant. Cam was a soldier and is now a deputy sheriff. One of his legs was amputated above the knee and he wears a prosthetic leg. He and Domini are attracted to each other but Cam won’t act on it because he’s embarrassed about his leg. He also likes rough sex and being dominant. He believes she wouldn’t like it. After months of frustrated desire, Domini finally tells Cam she wants to be his submissive – she had been drinking with girlfriends. So he takes her up on it, and they begin a hot and passionate affair. But Cam won’t let her see or touch his leg. He either blindfolds her or positions her in ways to ensure this.

During the last part of the book, things happen to other people which affect Domini and Cam. I’m being vague to avoid spoilers. Also, Domini has an insecurity about something.

DATA:
Story length: 276 pages. Swearing language: strong, including religious swear words. Sexual language: strong/erotic. Number of sex scenes: 13. Estimated number of sex scene pages: 49. Setting: current day Sundance area, Wyoming. Copyright: 2010. Genre: erotic contemporary western romance, amputated leg.

This is a great book, funny in some places, heartwrenching in others. There is a good plot, great characters, and a 7-year-old who will steal your heart. I liked when Cam had to help him practice his spelling words, and told the boy that 'antidisestablishmentarianism' was on the list.

The sex scenes are hot and raunchy and sweet, and serve to advance some of the themes of acceptance and self-image that the book addresses. I don't think this tale could be as well told if not as an erotic romance.

I got arrested today, apparently I misunderstood when the deputy asked 'please blow'.

WOW! I didn't think I was going to like 'Shoulda been a cowboy' as much as the the other Rough Riders in the series but I was wrong! Cam McKay and Domini were beautiful! It was refreshing to see a McKay boy who wasn't so tied up in ropes (all puns intended) in the ranch way of life. And to have a heroine who wasn't like all the other Wyoming girls.

Together thy over came each others disabilities, pulled through some of the toughest times of their lives all the while having smokin hot sex!! with great use of handcuffs along the way.

Im so excited to read Keelys story, that im almost jumping out of my skin. It feels like Ms. James has been leading up to hers for such a long time. I cant imagine it will be anything other that FAN-FRIGGIN-TASTIC!

I've been excited to read this book ever since I read Branded As Trouble the first time and fell in love with Cameron McKay. And to be honest, I really did enjoy it. There was just one thing that bothered the fuck out of me. And that was the threesome with Domini, Cam, and Brock, who happens to be Cam's best friend. At the point that they are having this threesome, Cam and Domini are already in love with each other. They are already feeling possessive of each other. And they should already know that neither of them really wanted to do the threesome. I wanted to smack Domini for wanting to go through with it in the first place and I got frustrated that Cam went forward with it, even if he did claim that he was doing it for Domini, so she could experience something new. I felt that it was really unnecessary and I was really uncomfortable reading the whole thing. I wasn't uncomfortable because it was three people because I'm used to that by now, but I just felt weird that they were doing it, kind of like they were cheating on each other, even though the two of them were participating. I don't know, I was just hoping that I could get through Cam's book without a threesome. Especially since there weren't any in Kade's and Colt's, my other two favorites, books.

Aside from that, though, I really enjoyed the book. I love Cam even more now and I loved seeing his personal growth. Growing not to be embarrassed by his stump and prosthetic leg, growing to let his family in during his vulnerable moments, and growing as a man and learning to accept Anton into his life. As much as I enjoyed seeing his relationship with Domini grow, I think I liked seeing Cam and Anton become closer even more. It was good to see them finally have their moment together and then to become friends and eventually see each other as father and son. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy Cam and Domini, though. I really did. They were so cute together and I really want Cam for myself. Every single time Cam called Domini "princess," I swooned. And I always put myself in her place. Cam, my sexy lover boy, come call me "princess" in your deep Wyoming drawl!

I did like Domini a lot and I like how she helped Cam with his personal growth. But I like that Cam also helped her to grow as a person. He helped her to open her heart to others and to learn to trust those around her, especially those who love her. I was saddened when I found out about what happened to her as a girl but I loved Cam even more when he told her that he didn't give a damn that she couldn't give him babies, that they could adopt (which they definitely do). Plus, they were good for each other and I liked that.

As always, I adored the glimpses I got of Kade and Colt, my adorable men. And I loved seeing all the McKay women gathered together, having fun. Particularly when Keely and Ramona got into a bar fight and Cam had to come. He he he.

Oh, oh, oh! And I absolutely loved when Jack showed up and Keely freaked out. Makes me really excited to read their book next!

Overall, this is a great book and once I got over the threesome thing I was able to concentrate on everything else that I loved about it.

I’ve been looking forward to Cam’s book for a long time. He’s been through so much, changed so much that I wanted to get to know him again. Naturally, I knew he would be dark after all that he’s been through, but he isn’t ever completely lost. Yes, he thinks himself as only half a man, but there’s still a lot of strength there that I had to admire and find attractive.

In a way, Cam reminded me of Z from the Black Dagger Brotherhood. They were the same in the way they carried themselves; soldiers who have survived through hell. They each had a warped sense of self-awareness, thinking that they are unable to be loved by others. But they each find strong women who don’t shy away from the ugly facts of their lives, but instead embrace them and understand that those bad memories help them shape the man they love today.

Domini is such a strong heroine for this reason. If she were weaker in any way, I don’t think a relationship between her and Cam would have worked out. I loved how selfless and giving she was and I also loved that she embraced her sexuality.

Towards the end of the book, I wondered how James would solve the conflict she had set up for herself. Though the resolution makes sense and is the swiftest and most logical way to solve the problem, I think it was at the cost of the romance. It’s hard to talk about without giving away spoilers, but I felt that the solution took out the choice and thus the romance. But I do think it was the only way to effectively resolve the problem at hand.

What I have to admire is the way James is able to create in depth characters, a strong storyline and real conflict in erotic romance. Many authors simply focus on the sex scenes, where the rest comes as secondary. But not in James’s writing. The sex and the characters and the story is all very much important in creating a well-rounded story for readers to enjoy.

I can’t wait to meet the Jack-hammer next!

The last 20% of this book sold it! Wow. This is Cam and Domini's story. Cam McKay, the local sheriff deputy, disabled war veteran falls in love with the sweet Ukrainian girl who runs the local diner. Cam goes in daily for his coffee but he will not admit to his feelings for Domini. Something keeps holding him back, much to her dismay. Events happen and they hook up and sparks fly! It was like 0 to 60 in a few sentences. I had a hard time with that..... Cam has serious emotional issues due his leg amputation and feeling like a half of a man. He keeps to himself and alienates his family. Only Domini seems to break through to him...having a leg amputated above the knee does NOT make you weak. Domini has her own secrets and she keeps them annoyingly close to her heart until near the end of the book.....

I have personal experience with amputations and the emotional impact it has on a man. Ms James did a fabulous job bringing to the forefront that it isn't just the physical disability that haunts amputees. Bravo to that.

The book was, as usual, very hot sexually. The story sold it for me though... It kind of dragged along and I did read two other books in the midst of this book but it still was awesome. A bit different from the other Rough Riders as Cam is not a rancher but still is all things McKay hotness.

A great cause for our wounded soldiers...because their battle doesn't end when they come home...it's just begun..

Sigh..just finished Cameron McKay’s story, Shoulda Been a Cowboy and I truly miss him and Domini already. This story was incredible, full of heart and that Dom/Sub flava I like. Just because Cam is a war hero/disabled vet, he is every bit the dominant, alpha male that can command with one word. I love how it showed the realness and honesty of what he went through missing half a leg, and how he felt like half a man, but that couldn’t have been further from the truth. He fell hard for Domini, who was a true submissive by nature, but definitely not a doormat. Ooh the way she would stand up to that big, strapping 6’5” man made him melt, and me in the process. I can’t stop talking about these McKay men. When I read these I feel like I’m apart of their family. ♥️💋🔥📖

First up, this is a smoking hot, off the charts romantica offering--if you prefer something a little more mild, Charlotte Douglas has an awesome Harlequin American by the same title from 2006. But, if you are looking for a walk on the wild, wild west side, you can't get any better than this. Cam is my absolute favorite kind of hero--the wounded warrior with a giant chip on his shoulder because he's coming to terms with an life altering injury. I swear I'm not one of the weird disabled vet groupies that Cam complains about in the story, but there is something really sweet about seeing love blossom when one of the parties is far different from the normal hero model. Cam lost his leg in Iraq, and while he's found a satisfying new career as a deputy sheriff, he's held himself back from romantic relationships. Domini also holds herself back from romantic relationships for her own reasons, and like Cam, she is no stranger to war as she's from the Ukraine originally. The two have danced around each other for several years as friendly acquaintances, but Domini finally finds the courage to tell Cam what she *really* wants. Which turns out to be exactly what Cam wants and what he thought he wouldn't get again--the chance to be the one in control and in charge. And what follows is incredibly hot and sweet at the same time as both find ways to open up to more of their real selves.

This reads like two excellent books in one as the first half of the book is packed with smoking hot love scenes that push the boundaries, both for the characters and for the reader. Then, the second half of the book is much sweeter with far fewer love scenes as it explores what it means for these characters to move beyond a casual fling. This is where James really shines, and if the first half of the book is a bit too hot for you, you will really appreciate the way James slows things down and deals with the deeper issues confronting both characters. Unlike so many Romantica offerings that try convince readers that a lasting HEA can come from a weekend or two of hot lovin', James acknowledges that a real relationship requires more than sexual compatibility and that character growth requires time for both the H/h to be worthy of their HEA. I got a little misty at the epilogue as I really, truly believed in the changes shown for both and in the HEA. Smoking hot + emotional = Big Win.

Spoiler Ahead This was book 7 in the "Rough Rider" series. I love reading Lorelei James book's they are also was hot when it comes to sexy time. Cameron McKay was a soldier in the military until he got hurt and came home he became a deputy sheriff instead of working on the family ranch. Domini Katzinski was an orphan in Ukraine and has not had the best life. For the past two years Cam has been watching Domini and she likes him also, but they each have issues Cam's being his leg and secrets and each fear that if the other knows, they would lose them. After a night out drinking with the girls she tells him that she wants to be his submissive. As they slowly build a trust between each other allowing them to explore their sexuality, relationship and their friendship, disaster strikes shaking them up once again. The chemistry between Domini and Cam was off the charter's and the sex scenes where hot. Can Cam give Domini give her what she wants? This was a good book that I listened to on audio and I liked the narrator for this book. I love listening and reading this series each book can be read as a stand alone. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

I left this one for last before continuing with book 13 of the series, and it was such a wonderful read, emotional and tender, with the expected involvement of the McKay clan and author’s signature steamy scenes.
HERO is a Warrior, ex-Army, currently the deputy sheriff, who has pushed everyone away since he lost half of his leg in order to avoid their pity. He feels less than a man but that hasn’t stopped him from falling for a pretty, shy woman also very attracted to him.
SCENES/CONTENT: several/erotic, one menage

I was looking forward to Cam's story and the sparks between him and Domini had been building over the last couple of books and I was not disappointed with what I read. It had plenty of steam/sex but this one also had substance.

Without even looking at the synopsis I guess the next one is about Keely and I have been really looking forward to reading her story and I hope it is as good as this one!

It took the first 50 pages for me to really get into this book and then it took off. For me this was the most emotional book of this series to date. Parts of it just wrenched at my heart while other parts made me sigh. I'm a HUGE fan of Lorelei James and look forwards to reading anything she writes.

4.5 stars!

Cam(eron) McKay has returned home from Iraq with a war injury that leaves him eternally crippled and this affects his self-image greatly. He has a hard time accepting it both physically and emotionally and shields himself from family and women by living solitary and dedicating all his time to his job as a deputy sheriff. Domini Katzinski has had a thing for Cam since like forever. When they share a steamy kiss, she thinks she's making progress but Cam doesn't follow through on it, worse, after the kiss he flees so fast from her he's about to leave skid marks. Domini still longs for him but doesn't dare make another move for fear of rejection. Then Keely McKay, Cam's sister gives Domini some advice she puts to good use and things get rolling. However before they can ride into the sunset together, there are a lot of issues to deal with, issues that eventually bring them closer together than ever!

Domini is hardworking, sweet and kinda shy. She is reserved and quiet but doesn’t let people boss her around. Sometimes she's a bit insecure and with Cam sexually submissive but she's no pushover or a doormat. This was very refreshing! Cam doesn't beat around the bush. He is bossy and a take-charge kind of man. He's straight up linear and expects the same from others, no embellishing or skirting around the real issues. Except for his true feelings for Domini. He's in love with her from the start but because her only stipulation going into their thing was that it wouldn't get serious (just sex) and because he's afraid of losing her if she uncovers his feelings, he keeps quiet about them.

Both Cam and Domini are a perfect mix of strength and vulnerability. I was impressed by the way Lorelei James incorporated the issue of Cam's disability into the story and into his (sexual) relationship with Domini. It doesn't have a prominent place in it but is an important factor that cannot be overlooked. And Domini doesn't baby or spare Cam because of it. A piece of great characterization! This and the gradual reveal of Domini's personality and background/history kept me once more engaged and invested in the story and gave it yet again it's unique place in the series.

Domini and Cam are realistic characters with real problems. This is something I love in Lorelei James' books. They're not the fairytale-ish, all-problems-work-themselves-out-magically kind. No, in these moving and emotional books the characters have to work on their issues, work hard to compromise and get to the point they can look out to a happy future.

Lorelei James' secondary characters are truly added bonuses in every single book. In SHOULDA BEEN A COWBOY there were two who grabbed my attention. One familiar and one new. I learned a lot more about Keely, the only girl among the McKay siblings and as I was reading this book, knowing that her book was waiting for me on my TBR pile, I couldn’t wait to start reading her book! She knows exactly what her brothers need and want but she's so oblivious to her own HEA waiting in the wings.

Quote:
“See? That’s why you two fit so perfectly.” Keely leaned into Domini. “You’re quiet and sweet, but that’s deceiving because you have an inner core of pure steel. I always thought Cam would need a woman who is as hardheaded and tenacious as he is. But Cam needs someone like you, a woman who gives him a soft place to land as well as quiet strength. You understand him in ways none of us ever have.” Keely’s eyes filled with tears and Cam felt himself tearing up. “I will always be grateful to you for that. And I am so happy you found each other.”

And then there was Brock Tennyson, Cam's best friend, who saved him when he was injured in Iraq. I am so very sad Brock ain't a McKay, and therefore it’s definitely no a sure thing of him getting his own book, because he really made my heart go pitter-patter and I am hoping with all hopes there's at least a novella story for him in the future but would settle for any secondary appearance in future books too.

Quote:
Brock’s six-foot two-inch frame unfolded from the sports car. He wore his usual aviator shades, jungle print camo pants, and combat boots. The difference between this uniform and his official army uniform was the dark green tank top with “That’s MISTER Asshole to you” emblazoned on the front.

I adore Lorelei James' characters, both main and secondary, both men and women. In SHOULDA BEEN A COWBOY they all entranced me once again. I was pulled deep into the family dynamics Lorelei James is a master at writing and into the emotional story between Cam and Domini. There were several scenes that brought a lump to my throat. Lorelei James does not pull punches, be it sexual, be it emotional, she puts her readers through the wringer and SHOULDA BEEN A COWBOY is no certainly no exception!

And the sex scenes? Hot as hell! There were numerous scenes where Cam's take-charge attitude made me go tingly all over. Contrary to the last two books in this series (BRANDED AS TROUBLE and STRONG SILENT TYPE) which were pretty vanilla, SHOULDA BEEN A COWBOY touches the D/s element of BDSM in a way that is not elaborate but yet very clarifying of how it works. I loved how shy Domini explained clearly to Cam what she wanted from him sexually and how she wanted to be submissive to his sexual dominance but she would not be a pushover or tolerate bossiness.

This series just never bores. It's one of the few series I dare to recommend reading back to back as it is never repetitive but rather each book is an enhancement to both the previous and the following ones and without annoying cliffhangers. Lorelei James never fails to please me with her Rough Riders, every book is a hit, and every book makes me crave the next like addicts crave their fix. Every time I read a Rough Rider book it's like being welcomed in a loving embrace of familiarity and comfort. It's like coming home.

*Quotes:
He licked the shell of her ear and his hands tracked her bound arms from her shoulders to her wrists. “Sweet Domini, who has a hankering to be dominated, I am so gonna f*ck you until you scream. But first—” he tugged her arms down and sank his teeth into the nape of her neck, “—I’m gonna play hard and dirty with you.”

Domini’s heart raced at the wild look in Cam’s eyes. This was the predator. The alpha. She, shy Domini Katzinski, brought out that beastly side in Cameron McKay.

“Darlin’, when they manufacture one that can do all the things my hot, wet tongue and my soft lips and sucking mouth can do, well, then I might be worried.” He grinned with pure male confidence. “Then again, maybe not.”

“You said double yum and I’m wondering if that’s some kind of Ukrainian slang for ‘dumb ass you’re late’.” “No. That’s American slang for you look and smell yummy.” Cam actually blushed. The man could fu*k her like an animal and demand all sorts of kinky things from her, but a compliment caused him to blush? She bit back a grin.

Today Cam strode directly to her. The gleam in his eye was unmistakable. No hello. No smile. Cam just planted his lips on hers and kissed her with passion, hunger and total possession. In public. The only place they touched were lips and tongues until Cam reached for her hand, sweeping his ragged thumb across her knuckles. Domini’s knees threatened to buckle. This man could undo her with a simple touch.

Holy shit did Domini kiss him. Seductively. Wantonly. Relentlessly. She licked and bit his lips as her tongue tasted and teased. Her kisses destroyed him, turning him into a raging beast; her caresses tamed him into a junkie who craved her touch.

“Let me finish. I fell in love with you so goddamned hard and fast my ass is still sore. The thing is, I fought it from the first time I set eyes on you, which is partially why I tried to just stay friends with you.” (...) “You fill a part of me that’s been empty since before I lost my damn leg. For the first time in my life I feel like a whole man. Not because you accept my handicap, but because you accept me. All of me.” Cam’s hand shook as his knuckle drifted down the side of her face. “You own my soul, Domini. You are my heart.”

*) There are much more quotes in this review than I am used to include in my reviews but I really couldn't leave 'em out! I had even more but unfortunately I don't have the time to do a Quote Post at the moment. I have saved them because you never know if there might be some more time in the future to do some Quote Posts of the Rough Rider series. For now enjoy these and let them entice you to read the whole story of Domini and Cam!

Lorelei James really can't do any wrong with this series. And while this one wasn't one of my favorites of the series, I still enjoyed it a lot.

Series Note:
Seventh book in LJ's "Rough Riders" series. I think you could probably get away with reading this one as a standalone, but you'd get more out of it reading in order.

Summary:
Cameron McKay is a bit of an odd duck in the rough and tumble cowboy McKay family. He never wanted to be a rancher, so he went to war instead. And got his leg blown off. Now he's back home in Sundance, Wyoming, trying to accept his new life and the loss of his leg. Which he's not doing such a great job of. His fear of how people see him has kept him from acting on his feelings for Domini Katzinski, manager of the local cafe.

But Domini is tired of waiting for Cam to act on the lust between them, so she propositions him and lets him know her secret desires. Cam can't believe what lurks underneath Domini's calm exterior. It's more than he could have imagined and the two begin a blazing affair. For Domini, it's a great fantasy, but because of secrets she keeps, she knows she could never keep Cam. Or could she? But just as the two are facing their feelings, tragedy strikes and their lives will never be the same.

Review:
I've been looking forward to reading Cam's book since he first popped up in this series. He's the mysterious, little-known McKay and LJ did a good job of making us readers want to know more about him. And he's a war hero at that.

I liked both Cam and Domini. Cam's the battle scarred, somewhat vulnerable Alpha Dom, and Domini's got this placid, calm exterior with a submissive sex-kitten inside. It's an interesting contrast. I liked that Domini sort of took the initiative and let Cam know what she wanted. The two had been circling around each other for so long that one of them had to take charge...at least in getting them together ;)

There are a lot of great emotional angles to the story as well. Cam's still struggling with losing his leg and how people see him. He doesn't want anyone to see him as weak, and has avoided women since being hurt. And Domini been through a lot in her life, has a lot of emotional scars, and a big secret about herself. All those things give the story a lot of depth.

And yeah, like any LJ book, there's a lot of smokin' hot sex. The D/S angle gives the book a little different feel than most of the others, which is a good thing, in my opinion.

There were two things about the book that keep me from giving it 5 stars. One is a small thing. And that deals with side story among secondary characters. There was a part about marital problems for one of Cam's cousins, and a tragedy that happens, and I felt kind lost on those characters and what was going on between them. I'm not sure if I'm just not remembering enough from past books, or if there just weren't enough details on them in this book. But I felt like I was missing something.

The other mild criticism I have is more about the setup of the book. For the first half, you get a wild sex fest between Cam and Domini. It's hot and steamy and fun to read. Then you get to the last chunk of the book and everything changes. Something big happens (I won't say what) and the whole tone of the books changes. I'm not faulting what happened...it fit the story. But I felt like the two chunks of the story were too divergent. The first chunk is all sex and steam and then the second chunk is almost all serious story. For me, there needed to be a better blending of the two parts to make the story flow a little better.

Still really enjoyed the book, though, and I'm really looking forward to reading more of the wild and crazy McKays...especially Keeley!

WARNING, this book contains: explicit sex and language, oral sex, anal sex, D/s sexual relationship, bondage, toys, a one-time m/f/m threesome...pretty much what you'd expect from an LJ book.

OMG.. The bar scene.. I loved it...
Briefly summarised some of my fav parts without spoilers...

"So, this is where the skank meeting is," a chubby blonde sneered.
"We saved a seat for you, Amanda, but damn, I don't think your fat ass will fit in the chair," Keely shot back.
India coughed to cover a laugh
"You could always get on your knees," Ramona suggested, "since we all know that's a natural position for you"
"F** you Ramona. Your mouth has always been bigger than your brain," another woman snapped.
"You think I'm all talk Margo? Try Me."
...............

Amanda's upper lip curled with disgust. "Slut's"
Keely and Ramona exchanged a look and laughed.
"Was that supposed to be an insult?"
"Only a McKay would take that as a compliment." Margo said "Everyone in the entire state knows a McKay or West will f**k anything that walks."
"Except for you, apparently," Keely retorted. "How many of my brothers and cousins have you propositioned? And how many have turned you down flat? All of them."
...............

“Why don’t you load up your freakshow friends---“ Margo jerked her head towards India,” and get the hell out of here.”
Keely didn’t budge. “Make me.”

“Remember you said that when your crying for your mama McKay.”

No one moved.
This was about to get ugly.

“Afraid to take the first swing?” Margo taunted.

Casually Ginger said, “Keely? Can I offer a suggestion?”
“Sure.”
“Kick her ass. I’ll bail you out.”

All hell broke loose.
..........................................

I really liked this book. But Colt and Kade still hold my heart!
All the McKay women rallying together for the "Cowgirls night out." I loved it!
I really wanted to like Cam since he came back, but I was really struggling too. He was just such an ass most times..
Domini was beautiful, so sweet and seemed innocent.
But together? I loved them! He was a better person with her (most of the time) and she was whole with him. Those sweet emotional scenes? omg! I was an emotional wreck most of the time through this book...
and all the McKay Men finally saying their piece to Cam... As well as Mama Bear Caro. Just like a real family <3
But wow... How many kids are there now? I can't keep up! Like 9/10?
I did really like how the whole family was in this book, including Ky and Gib etc with actual speaking parts not just being shuffled around. (I laugh at the Transformers part!)

Nadia annoyed me in this book, why would she go back to him?! and I felt so sorry for Anton, I'm glad Cam finally gave him a go.
I didn't like the quick convenient marriage. It just didn’t sit right with me, but I did love how every had a small part in it.
and don't get me started on the STUPID Threesome... Why Sweet baby Jesus Why would you put that in there?

1 thing I do really want to know though.
What did Keely do at Colt and Indy's wedding?!

Onto to the next one....

Joy, Heartache, and Pain. If you thought the other books in the series were good, you haven't yet been on a more emotional ride.

"The bigger they are, the harder they fall—in love.

Soldier Cameron McKay has found his niche, and it ain’t ropin’ steers and wearin’ spurs. His deputy sheriff job, plus battle injuries that ended his military career, keep him right where he wants to be: Off the ranch and away from his family’s pity. His darkest war memories are on lockdown, leaving him skeptical he’ll ever find a woman who wants a man who’s less than whole.

Domini Katzinski has had to control every aspect of her life since age eleven, when she was orphaned in the Ukraine. Watching others’ relationships crumble has convinced her to focus on the short-term and find a take-charge man to whom she can relinquish total sexual control. Cam fits the bill: gorgeous, with a brooding vulnerability no one else seems to see. Plus, he has his own handcuffs.

Once Cam gets over his surprise that sweet, shy Domini wants to be dominated, he is back to issuing orders. Their passion is as hot as a rocket-propelled grenade—and if Domini has her way, it’s a one-shot deal. Cam wants more, and launches a full-out sensual assault…until tragedy strikes, forcing him to change tactics as he tries to keep past demons from blowing their future together all to hell… "

For starters this story made me emotional, yes I did end up loosing some tears. Cam and Domini were the perfect couple. Both in love with each other since the first time they met. They not only shared a few erotic moments, they end up sharing love, togetherness, and most of all passion for what they could be and would be for each other. I love how they were brought together and how they just could not get enough of each other.

This was for sure one of my favorites in the series. I was pulled into the way that being together wasn't so easy and learning to trust each other was a big step. I loved it was expressed how quickly a surly kid can put a strain on a relationship and how love, honesty and patience can get you through the next obstacle.

All I know for sure is that the McKay men sure know how to claim their women. The series is heating up so on the next McKay family journey with Keely in All Jacked Up.

Hands down, this is my favoritest one so far of the Rough Riders series. First five-star rating! I absolutely LOOOOOOOVED the dynamics in Cam's and Domini's relationship, their feelings for the other, how they fell in love, all the drama, all the hot sex, all the family angst...it was just really, really great. A totally wonderful story. The menage was a total surprise...I did NOT see that coming at all but damn, what a bonus! Ha ha ha! There's really not much more to say about this book. The plot was excellent, I loved how neither Domini or Cam were "whole" and completed each other, and well, damn, I just love these McKay men. These Rough Riders books just seem to get better and better. I'm really glad there are so many more...I can't believe I'm only halfway through the series! I think that this was probably the first book I've read of the series where I'm REALLY glad that I read them in order. Each book does have enough background on the other characters that it can be read as a stand-alone, but for the maximum enjoyment, this series should be read in order in my opinion. Each one is so different, but the characters are so closely entwined (as it should be with a huge family in a small town) that it just makes more sense to read them in order. So if you are looking for an awesome cowboy series with a lot of flaming hot sex, go pick up Long Hard Ride and meet the McKays. The barfight with the girls at the beginning was SOOOOOOO funny! I'm laughing right now thinking about it...I can't wait to read Keely's story next.

I adored Cam since he came out in Colt's defense, and now he's definitely my favorite Mckay. With all that happened to him, he continued a personal war against himself and the limitations imposed by his disability and still he emerged victorious. Cam does not take things with philosophy, in many aspects, he does not accept what happened to him and yet, when he has to show real strength, he faces his tragedy and wins it. And Domini. We had not seen much of her in past books and it was a surprise how firm and determined she is, under that sweet and shy exterior, and nevertheless keeps her own secrets and tragedies and yet, she´s not afraid to ask for what she wants and even go after it.
P.S. Keely is my new heroine, I join a bar figth with her any day of the week.

I have to admit to all who may read this that I CRIED with this book.

I only remember crying like this while reading "Lover Eternal" (from the BDB) at the end of the story when the Scribe Virgin tells Rhage she must take him away from Mary in order for her to live....i BAWLED!!!! well, something similar happened to me with this book....honestly. I loved trying to understand the psychology involved in Cam's book. It is hard to describe and, it is so real that you realize, this, could happen to you, or to anybody you know.

I can just imagine what goes through the mind of those who fight for out country when a situation similar to Cam's appears. This book reveals the weakness and pain going through the mind of a soldier who lost more than a body part, but his self confidence and possibly his self esteem. The help of his sister, (even tho lightly described) is only one of his pillars as he evolves to become again the man he once was. I loved his story. It made me believe that, if a person like him, and many other can find love regardless of any kind of condition his bod might be at, i can do it too :) I would give this 10 stars if possible.

I love my McKay cowboys.....and i always knew i'd love cam....but i didn't know he was by far the most dominant of the males. i understand why he feels like he needs to dom now, he needs that control having gone through a tramatic past without being able to control it. but even then h was like that.

It's very sexy, and one missing leg is not such a big deal to anyone, not when a lot of men tend to be missing there brain. physical impairments are nothing...you can fake limbs....but there's no fixing stupid.

I'm still not sure if i like Domini or not....she's a little too aloof for me. Anton...who i thought was a sweet boy turned out to be kind of bratty to me, i didn't like, though i can't blame him really, he did lose both his parents....but when he never really liked them i guess i don't see why he was being so awful to Cam.

And of course...what would be a cowboy book without my fave McKay cowgirl...Keely and her bar fight were great! i can't wait to read her book up next i think.

Okay, so obviously I like this series as I have read almost all of them. But I was so excited to finally read Cam's story. And it was worth the wait!! I've never read about a man in a non-paranormal series that was this strong, this aggressive. And it was so hot! I love how Domini remained true to her character, too, instead of changing to match Cam. She balanced his aggression and dominance with quiet submission. But don't think she's weak. She can stand her ground when she feels Cam is crossing a line. But she understands his need to lead, and lets him have his way - within reason. Ms. James did a fantastic job of showing how wonderful a balanced relationship can be without making the woman appear inferior to the man. I can't wait for another one!!
