"Children of Dreams" is borne out of Lorilyn Roberts' shattered dreams. The inspiring story of turning stolen years into life-changing hope not only for her but two destitute children will bring tears to the reader as he identifies with her feelings of insecurity and fear. The timeless theme of God's faithfulness-the stuff out of which God brings redemption-will leave the reader riveted to the pages of this book.
"Children of Dreams" is more than an adoption story set in the remotest regions of the planet. Facing insurmountable odds-communist blockades, life-threatening illness, betrayal, and deceit-Lorilyn Roberts' courage and determination never to give up will touch the reader. Despair transformed into heavenly joy and evil overcome by God's redemptive love will inspire even the most skeptical to believe in miracles. "Children of Dreams" resonates with Biblical truth at a deep level and in a sense is everyone's story.
Ms. Roberts is intimately familiar with adoption, having also been adopted as a child, and is able to present the spirit of adoption, as never before captured, in this tender tale. Comparing the adoption of her daughters to her adoption by the heavenly Father throughout the story flows naturally.

This is one of those books I wanted to like so much more than I actually did. I just didn't care for the author.
First the good. It is very well-written. She is very passionate about adoption. Roberts is also very open with sharing her story. I definitely learned a lot about international adoption and what comes with it.
That said I found the author almost unlikable. Instantly the reader is subjected to her lack of cultural insensitivity. I understood the shock at the lack of toilet paper. However, an adult should be able to move past it much more quickly than she seemed to be able.
The straw that broke the camel's back came fairly early. She has just adopted her first daughter, and one of the first things she does is remove her nose and ear piercings WHILE HER DAUGHTER SLEEPS. She says just sentences later her daughter didn't nap again. Why does she do it? Because they aren't Christian or American symbols. My heart broke for that little girl. Here she is with a stranger with whom she needs to bond and that woman is more concerned with her new daughter's appearance. Instead of worrying about making her a Christian she is wrapped up in superficial symbols.
I found the author whiny through the book. I almost feel badly typing that, but I always felt she was so worried with appearing a good Christian more so than being one.
Children of Dreams is a true story of a single woman's determination to fulfill her longing to become a mother and facing the numerous obstacles designed to destroy that dream. Fortunately, God is on her side because she's going not going to get this done without Him. The author painstakingly takes the reader through her sometimes painful, but ultimately triumphant journey of adopting her two daughters from the countries of Nepal and Vietnam. From a failed marriage, to financial issues, to her age (apparently being 39 instead of 40 could derail an adoption), the monstrous bureaucracies and outright corruption involved in international adoptions is a sometimes humorous, but mostly harrowing journey to motherhood. Fortunately, it is worth the trip. Using the correlation of God adopting us into his family by the sacrifice of His Son, the author uses scripture to emphasis the painful changes necessary that the Lord had to make in her in order to be the mother she longed to be. This is a story of trusting God no matter how insurmountable the difficulties may seem. I warn you, you'll shed a tear or two along the way, but not all of them sad. I dare you not to cry when her daughter Manisha, who could speak no English at the time, told her adoptive mother "I love you" for the first time. Go on, I dare you.
"It soon became clear to me that the adoption of my children wasn't that different than God's adoption of us..."
It is God who shapes our dreams and directs our path. Overcoming loss, separation, and abandonment, Ms. Roberts shares her heart and addresses many thoughtful questions and circumstances she endured on her journey of international adoption. Comparing her situations to Christian principles and beliefs, she shares some of her most intimate emotions as well as battles during the process.
The what ifs and suppose... Questions plague her, and she decides to trust that God's will must be done. "only God could take away my slavery to the fear that paralyzed me. As fears grip on me let go, God held me in his arms...and spoke silently to my heart, "I love you."
Thru heart wrenching and painful Circumstances, Lorilyn shares with us her struggles to find happiness and contentment after the bitterest of trials. Brought low, she wonders to herself if God will ever bless her with peace and contentment again. Is it possible after betrayal of the most acute kind? Would she have children of her own? This is her journey.
International adoption of two little girls is the basis for Children of Dreams by Lorilyn Roberts. Written from a first person perspective, the author shares her spiritual journey along with her journey to becoming a single parent, homeschooling, and maintaining a full time job.
The plight of children living in third world countries is very descriptive and heart wrenching. Lorilyn, in a non-judgemental way, tells it like it is and allows the reader to use their imagination for the rest. This book is well written, informative, and a great story of personal pain and personal gain.
Children of Dreams reads like a novel in that it is a real page-turner. One minute I'm high on the mountaintops and, then before I know it, I'm down in the deepest valleys. As we become part of the author's own faith journey, we are drawn into her innermost being and become privileged witnesses to both her agonies and her joys. This is a story you will remember long after you have closed the book. Highly Recommended!
I'm not sure I would want to be reading this book if I was contemplating international adoption. I wish she wouldn't have talked about her extensive international travels before deciding to adopt. It seemed at odds with her comments later about not having enough money to stay in the nicer hotels. However, it's a good story, and you can definitely see how God was working in her life and the lives of her adopted children.
This was an interesting view of one person's struggle through a portion of her life that included adopting children from 3rd world countries. I enjoyed the story but found the way in which it was written a little bit 'off'. I am in no way an experienced critic, this is just my very unprofessional opinion.
This is a gripping page turner. Lorilyn tells her story of international adoption as a single mother- the highs the lows, the fears and the joys. Though written a couple of years ago, the new cover seems to have given this title wings as it recently hit #1 on several Amazon categories.
While the odds of becoming a mother seemed to be stacked against her, she never gave up. If she only believed, God would fulfill her heart's desire of becoming a mother ...even if it wasn't in the conventional way. Her faith was so strong that she traveled to the other side of the world ... not once, but twice. When others might have given up, she persevered and was rewarded, bringing Hope and Joy into her life.
I read this book with full concentration on each detail as revealed by the author. First of all, this is a Christian book so that made it a must read. While learning about how the adoption process works in three countries, I could empathize with the author. This is a book for all persons. Very little errors found and nothing distracts from the story. Five stars. I will blog this book on whenangelsfly.net.
A wonderful true account of all the ups and downs of a single Christian woman on a journey across the world in search of motherhood and the Children God wanted with her . Through many trials and tribulations her faith was tested and strengthen; in the end both she and the two little girls have been blessed.
We are looking to become foster parents with the possibility of adopting in the future. This book, written from a Christian perspective, gave an amazing account of the ups, downs, and utter dependence Lori had to finally give in order to allow God to do what He always does; an amazing work. Highly recommend!
Children of Dreams – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat
‘Nepal is the forty-eighth poorest country in the world. Out of a population of eighteen million, six million drink water we wouldn’t give to our dogs… later I would find out what drinking contaminated water could do to a seven-year-old child…. Nepal’s per capital income was only $180 per year, one of the lowest in the world and the lowest in South Asia, where the average per capital income was $350 per year. Of its eighteen million inhabitants, half live in abject poverty.’
‘I was surprised by my first impressions of North Vietnam. I had expected to see more than just vestiges of communism as a result of the Vietnam War. Quite to the contrary, the Vietnamese had adopted a lot of our Western culture – selling our music, speaking our language, and owning their own shops, resulting in a vibrant, capitalistic economy. My uneducated mindset of a people living in apathy or without freedom was turned on it head as the North Vietnamese appeared to be hard-working and content. They showed an endearing love for their children, were kind to me, and harbored no ill-will toward Americans.’
What would entice Children of Dreams Author Lorilyn Roberts to take a trip to Nepal, which is a small country positioned between China and India, and then to Vietnam? Children! Lorilyn’s ideal future, consisting of a happy marriage, advanced education and a family came to an end when her husband asked for a divorce. This was the man that she had put her own education on hold for so that he could go to medical school. And to make matters worse, shortly after the divorce, his girlfriend gave him something that she had not been able to: A child, Here she was with nothing but dreams that would never come true. At least that’s what she thought.
Her life was revitalized when God showed her a picture of a 3 year old little girl living with her father in Nepal. The only future this child had was unsanitary living conditions and food, then death. It would be a miracle if she lived to be 7. Lorilyn knew, after seeing this child's picture, that this would be the daughter given to her by God. Then, several years later, Lorilyn received a picture of another beautiful little girl living in Vietnam with her birth mother who could not provide for her. So now Lorilyn would have her family. Two beautiful daughters that would grow up knowing the love of a mother and the love of God. But these daughters didn't come easy. Nothing had prepared Lorilyn for what she would face while rescuing her daughters out of their dark world of poverty.
Through her journey of adoption in Nepal, Lorilyn was faced with problems that would have caused most of us to walk away from the idea of adoption. But through her determination and her strong belief that God had sent her to this poverty stricken country to rescue one of His children, Lorilyn stays to the end. Even later when she made her trip to Vietnam to rescue Joy, who would be her second daughter, she finds herself facing problems but of a different type. In Nepal she had to be content with the filth not only of the living arrangements but also the food and water. In Vietnam she must deal with an adoption agent that isn’t quite on the up and up. She's faced with deadlines, her adoption being put on hold with a promise that the paperwork will be completed soon, her being told that the child she was to adopt had been kidnapped, and then the US Embassay warning that her agent was under investigation and she may not be able to adopt this child that she had already grown close to.
Children of Dreams is a true story of Lorilyn Roberts’ hardship as she adopts her two beautiful daughters. I can honestly say that I’m proud to, even slightly, be able to say that I know someone with such a strong belief in God's will and one so brave. Her oldest daughter sums up her appreciation for her mother with these perfect words:
When Manisha, Lorilyn’s daughter from Nepal was asked “What does it mean to you to be adopted?” Her answer was “It means I didn’t grow in my mommy’s stomach but in her heart.”

Beautifully and truthfully written, the author shares heartbreak of a marriage ending, but the journeys that took her across the ocean to adopt her beautiful children from two different cultures in separate journeys. Fascinating descriptions of her travels, her beautiful children, and her life. Such a joy to read.!
There is Hope and there is Joy; “but the greatest gift of all is Love”! (I Corinthians 13:13). Lorilyn has all three; but she had to adopt the first two and that was no easy task to undertake. Then again, life was not meant to be easy. Lorilyn chose to adopt her family, her two girls, from the poorest of the poor. She ventured around the world and she endured hardship, disease, communist roadblocks, lies, deceit, and much more; but she followed her heart’s desire, steadfast in the belief that her dream was also God’s dream. She adopted her first daughter, Manisha Hope, in Nepal and, years later, she adopted her second daughter, Joylin Van, in Vietnam. It required a great deal of faith and a lot of courage. God gave us the gift of life. He adopted us as His children and He gave us love. Lorilyn shares her gifts from God, her life and her love with her adopted daughters. Through the power of storytelling, she also shares her gifts with us.
Children of Dreams is Lorilyn Roberts’ story of adoption. From a life of tragedy, this woman blossomed into a person that glowed with God’s love, a love that she wanted to share. She had a strong desire to reach out to those who really needed her loving touch. The world is full of underprivileged children in need of such love. Through perseverance and faith, Lorilyn found two girls to love. Children of Dreams is a passionate story that traces a journey of discovery in a world full of unknowns, a world sometimes full of frightening experiences, on the road to foreign adoptions.
Children of Dreams is an endearing story, a real page-turner, about the power of love and the power of faith. We are all God’s children, adopted and loved equally. Children of Dreams is also a story about adoption and the difficulties often presented when trying to adopt a child overseas. Children of Dreams is highly recommended by award-winning author, Emily-Jane Hills Orford, Allbooks Reviews.
I was very touched by this book. Ms. Roberts takes the reader through the emotional turmoil of wanting a child so badly and having that dream ripped away while her husband moves on with someone else and has his own child to attempting to adopt children and facing insurmountable obstacles. With God's help, she persevered and now has two beautiful daughters but there is an amazing story of how she got from divorcee to mother....and it is a beautiful story! Her comparison to how we are adopted by God is, I believe, original and right on! Let me start this section by saying, I don't generally read this type of book. I usually stick to fiction, but the description and cover caught my attention. I was immediately taken through a roller coaster of emotions when she described her desire for a baby, her divorce, the hoops she jumped through, her joy of finally getting her babies, her fear for her children's' health and safety, and many many more. She has a unique understanding of how we are adopted by Christ because of her experiences and I think it makes a beautiful book. She doesn't take a 'lofty' approach of I did all this, but says instead that GOD did all this for her and that to me is the most important thing. She adamantly states that she waited on God and that is why everything worked out for her in the end. It wasn't an easy journey for her or her daughters but God brought them together in His time and way. I rate this book a 5/5. You will laugh, cry and feel an emotional roller coaster while you take the journey with Ms. Roberts!
Thank you to the author for providing a review copy of this book. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
What an amazing story by Lorilyn Roberts. I have watched several adoption stories on television but never read about one. Author Lorilyn Roberts talks about her journey to a third world country.
There are so many people involved with international adoption. And when you think the child is already yours things starts to go wrong. But with her faith in God, she overcame fear, obstacles, deceit, lies and greed among others to put the devil to shame enabling her to bring her adopted children toAmerica. God had a plan for her. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”.
She shows the love God has for us by adopting us as His own. Every adopted parent can relate to her story. Proverbs13:12“Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life”. The journey of adoption finally gave her the children of dreams. This was emotional and true to the heart. I highly recommend reading this book.
The synopsis on the back of the book says "The inspiring story of turning stolen dreams into life-changing hope not only for her but two destitute children will bring tears to the reader as she identifies with her feelings of insecurity and fear." And that it did.
Lorilyn Roberts' writing drew me into her real-life story and as I kept reading I found myself reading faster wanting to know what was happening next. Being an adoptive mother, and having friends that adopted children from outside the United States, I so related to much of Roberts' fears and insecurities until that final piece of paper was signed. Often times the final adoption is so close, yet so far away.
Roberts' story is riveting and a journey many adoptive parents have to take. Her faith in God pulled her through the tough and worrisome times making her stronger as time passed. And, there is a happy ending.
When I received my copy of "Children of Dreams" in the mail I thought I would just open it and take a look. Before I knew it, I was on Chapter Eight and looking forward to reading the rest of Lorilyn's story. Even though this is a non-fiction book it reads like fiction. Lorilyn has put so much detail into her story you feel like you've been transported to the far regions of Nepal and Vietnam along with her. She tells of her trials and hardships she endured to adopt her children Manisha and Joy. Throughout the book she relates the process of adoption with our adoption by our heavenly Father. You will not look at adoption the same after you read Loyilyn's book. You will not be sorry you read "Children of Dreams" whether you are adoptive parents or not.
An excellent read! Ms.Roberts' style is warm and personal. She will take you on a emotional roller coaster ride that is the world of international adoption. Through it, she never holds herself out as being the perfect Christian. In fact, she is rather forthcoming about her struggles and doubts, but in the end, God prevails. It is inspiring reading for anyone facing tough times and trying to trust God. This is probably even more true for those going through the international adoption process. At times during my reading, I wanted to give her a comforting hug; at other times I wanted to tell her to "get a grip on yourself." In the end, you will come to know the hearts of this woman and her two "children of dreams."
This is the true story of a courageous single woman’s quest to adopt two international children, despite what often seemed like insurmountable obstacles. Lorilyn Roberts weaves a tale that is nothing short of inspiring. Heartfelt, beautifully written and engaging from cover to cover, this is a story of perseverance, tenacity, and immeasurable love on the part of a broken divorcee who follows her dream to become a mother. In the process she learns what it means to trust in God completely, knowing that He is the author of all good things. I sincerely loved this book and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an inspirational, true story.
I should have really liked this book; the story of a single woman's challenges in adopting a girl from India and another one from Viet Nam. I learned a lot about the obstacles families can face in such adoptions. But it proved to be a semi-engaging read for me.
Lorilyn Roberts' marriage falls apart, yet she wants children. This book is the adventure that happens in foreign adoptions, good things and bad things, told for the point of view of a woman of faith.
The author's story of adopting her two daughters, 7 years apart. The first from Nepal and the second from Vietnam. Very encouraging as she tells of the difficulties and clinging to God to bring these about.
I only finished this because I wanted to know if the adoptions were completed. The author's frequent bouts with self-pity frustrated me and the writing was very difficult to follow as she attempted to correlate a past event with a current event.
