Channel your inner Zen turtle with Sandy Gingras's gorgeous watercolor gift book.
Long ago, Sandy Gingras read "The Tortoise and the Hare," a fable that teaches "slow and steady wins the race." But she didn't learn the lesson! Instead she lived the race of hurry-up and do-it-all every day. And it was tiring.
But now, Gingras presents readers with a different kind of lesson from a different kind of turtle in the charming book Lessons of a Turtle . And it's a good Go with the slow! Life is about enjoying what's around you now and finding your own path. It's about the beauty of the journey more than the achievement of the finish line. So be like the turtle . . . notice, savor, bask, risk, grow. Put some life back in your life!
Gingras helps readers get through life by using charming "turtlisms" that complement her just-as-cute turtle illustrations. She teaches us about life's little lessons with little treats like, "You can't move forward until you stick your neck out." and "The slower you go, the more you see." The author's little observations make a big difference on the journey through life.
Recurring childhood dream (nightmare?): Walking up familiar steep hill trying to catch up with family as they disappear from view. Unable to catch up with them and feeling left behind. Favorite childhood story: Tortoise and the Hare. Tortoise wins through s l o w dogged determination. Fantasy: to be able to go as slow as I like and slip inside my own portable shell whenever necessary.
Told my Mother-in-Law (who never forgets anything and knows my obsession with books) I identify with turtles so she got me this book. The watercolor illustrations are sweet. Sweet! Example: ‘don’t let anyone turn you into something you don’t want to be’; there is a little pink bowl marked ‘turtle soup’ complete with spoon and napkin. Two more: today’s forecast: clumsy with moments of grace and everyone is soft inside.
This review is almost longer than the book. Enjoy with your favorite fellow un-fastee.
Wow! So few words, and yet such fulfillment of the soul. Turtles have a special place in my heart... they have so much to teach us. Bravo for Sandy's gentle drawings and even gentler words. Brought back moments of magic to me in a few minutes time. Very replenishing to the soul <3
My oldest son (41) is a turtle lover. I purchased this book for him but wanted to read it first. What a thought-provoking book! I love it. Only one page that I didn't care for because it can be misinterpreted. See if you an figure out which page.
