HE WOVE A SPELL AROUND HER HEART

Handsome and powerful, with enough Comanche blood coursing through his veins to make him a little bit dangerous, Chase Wolf was used to getting what he wanted. So when Chase saw Franny--a golden-haired angel with deep green eyes, delicate features, and the sweetest smile--he set out to make her his.

As tempted as Franny was, she had too many secrets to let someone enter her world--secrets that would send any reasonable man packing. But Chase was far from reasonable, and despite her desperate attempts to push him away, he would not let her past destroy their future. For his Comanche heart knew that no price was too great to pay for love, happiness, and most of all, magic.

(1)romance author:
Adeline Catherine was born and raised in Grants Pass, Oregon, USA. She always yearned to be a writer like her mother. The morning that one of her professors asked if she could use samples of Catherine’s creative writing on an overhead projector to teach was a dream come true. In 1988, she sold her first book to Harlequin Intrigue and went on to write three more before she tried her hand at a single-title historical romance. Nine books later, she did her first single-title contemporary.

Catherine married Sidney D. Anderson, an industrial electrician and entrepreneur. They had two sons, Sidney D. Jr. and John G. In 2001 she and her husband purchased a central Oregon home located on a ridge with incredible mountain views and surrounded by forestland honeycombed with trails. It was her dream home, a wonderland in the winter and beyond beautiful in the summer. She named it Cinnamon Ridge after the huge ponderosa pines on the property, which sport bark the color of cinnamon.

Sadly, Catherine lost her husband to a long-term illness in 2014. She has kept Cinnamon Ridge as her primary residence but divides her time between there and her son John's farm, where she has the support of her loved ones and can enjoy his horses, cows, and raise her own chickens.

Catherine loves animals and birds, both wild and domestic. She presently has two Australian shepherds, six cats, and a very old canary. She is very family oriented as well. Her older son has lived in Japan, Australia, and now resides in New Zealand. Catherine and her stateside family will celebrate Christmas on the north island with Sidney, his wife Mary, and their two sons, Liam and Jonas.

My oh my oh my, have a big box of Kleenex handy when you read this tear-jerker, the fourth and final installment of Catherine Anderson's wonderful 'Comanche' series. The occasional slow tears I had as I read this book soon turned to full on gushers by the time I got to the last 50 pages. Wow, what an emotional read-- and I'm utterly drained. This was at times a very difficult, depressing read, but also hard to put down. Come to think of it, none of the books in the series was a joyful walk in the park, but they're all so wonderfully written and have fabulous heroes (and heroines) that fans of the previous books will definitely want to read this one, no matter how gut wrenching it is to read.

This is the story of Chase Kelly Wolf, the 25 yr. old son of Loretta and Hunter Wolf (Comanche Moon) and beautiful young (reluctant) prostitute Franny Graham. The story starts out with the sometimes rebellious Chase recuperating from broken ribs at the family home in late 1800's Wolf's Landing, Oregon. Wolf has dreams of becoming a timber baron so he can make lots of money, which he equates with power and respect. Wolf is struggling a bit with his feelings about his Comanche heritage, is a bit bitter about life and about a woman who 'done him wrong', carries a bit of a chip on his shoulder, and is searching for a path in his life. When he meets his sister Indigo's best friend Franny down by the creek and notices her sweet and innocent beauty, the kind that makes men want to 'fight mountain lions for her--and win', all thoughts about his injured ribs leave his head. He is totally smitten. But Chase (who has been away from home for years) is unaware the sweet, 'innocent' Franny is the town's local prostitute.

After hearing that, Chase does his damndest to make Franny miserable, trying to break up her friendship with his sister, figuring that she's just out to get what she can from Indigo and his family. He's totally unfeeling and out and out rude to her, which makes the reader wonder if he's really the son of the compassionate Hunter and Loretta. But after a heartfelt conversation with the always wise Hunter, Chase starts to realize that there may be special circumstances regarding Franny's career choice, and feels ashamed of his actions. He vows to apologize to Franny, and tries desperately to make it up to her and to be her friend. He knows Franny is keeping some big secrets, and is determined to find out what they are. He realizes that she doesn't act like any prostitute he ever encountered, and knows that there's got to be some reason why she refuses to let him help her. But what? It's not until he secretly follows her to her family home that he figures out her sad story. And a mighty sad story it is...

Well, Franny's story just about broke my heart. And that ungrateful family of hers? Ugh. They should be ashamed of themselves. Franny definitely gave new meaning to the word 'selfless', but at times I wanted to shake her and say "do something for yourself girl", you deserve it! Franny's guilt and sense of responsibility was just destroying her, and she was so afraid to let herself love--thank God Chase bulldozed his way into her life. His methods weren't always tactful, but they were effective, and they were rooted in love. I was just praying that he could get through to her.

And Chase--what a man. After a rather bad start, he turned into every bit the man his father was, and more. Once he decided that Franny was his destiny, he was relentless in his pursuit of her. I just loved that about him. And when Franny compared her reluctance to fall in love with Chase to what happened to her cat 'Toodles' when she decided to love it (I know it sounds strange), and then confessed her love for Chase, that's when the tears started flowing and I swear they got worse after each page. Just when it looked like Franny and Chase might finally get their HEA, something happened that made me shout "nooooo"... The only good thing about that was Chase's confrontation with Franny's family and the long overdue kick in the rear they needed. Bravo, Chase.

Don't look for many love scenes in this one. Although Chase was very loving towards Franny, I believe they only had one (extended) actual love scene, which was tastefully done and by no means explicit. But no matter, this book was all about the beautifully written characters and forgiveness, and learning how to love oneself. Wonderfully done, and expertly told by Catherine Anderson. As an added bonus there's a nice little epilogue that includes all the past characters from the series, and will have you grabbing for the Kleenex. Great series--all of them winners! 4 1/2 stars.

"It was your gift to me,Chase. All wrapped up in magic."

-Franny

"Comanche Magic" is a Heart-rending,Sentimental and Heavenly love-story (fourth and last book in the "Comanche-series") about Chase Kelly Wolf,a half-comanche who seeks the meaning about his life. His fate is sealed when he meets and falls hard and fast for his soulmate, the green-eyed Franny Graham. Despite her profession, he is insistent on saving her from it...and makes her wish for dreams she long ago gave up on. There will be need of wonders of comanche magic from Chase...for Franny to finally step away from her tormenting past.

Catherine Anderson writes magically and passionately with her very words, and i remember being fascinated by Chase`s character when i was in my younger teens in "Comanche Heart" and just longed for his own story. I love his stubborness, arrogance, wild and untamed nature that flows through his comanche blood. He was so caring towards Franny that my heart broke,he loves her so dearly and heartily and selflessly that it just amazed me.I was in full bewilderment in the way he courts her and woos her,and proposes to her in early stage into their blossoming romance. You get me what i am saying, he completely stole my heart!

If there is one character to shed tears for in the all mighty history of books, then Franny has to be one of them. I cried for her, cried and cried my heart out.Life has given her nothing but cruelty and harsh unhappiness, and until now in my heart i still weep over what she got through, and i still weep over the women and men that has to go through that profession in order to survive in this world until today.I will forever love Chase, for being the hero he is,for being the only man who ever understood her,the only man who sincerely loved her and the only man who ever fought for her soul.
Franny is a pure and selfless soul i adored and admired.Despite it all she had such an inner strength that moved me.A soul that starved for happiness, she was a dreamy-like goddess in my opinion. So beautiful and tortured!

It was such a pleasure meeting the other characters from the former books in the "Comanche"-series, Loretta and Hunter,Swift and Amy,Indigo and Jake. What a wonderful conclusion,i just have a deep fondness over the whole series. No wonder i have rated all the comanche books 5 stars!

I finished "Comanche Magic" with a happy smile when i closed this book.Happy for Chase`s and Franny`s deserving happy ever after...!!!

Comanche Magic was a good, well-written book...but it was also rather difficult to read at times because of the subject matter.

Franny, the heroine, was forced into prostitution at the age of 13 after a series of tragedies destroyed her family. She's spent nine years being degraded and used by men to the point where she feels like a non-person, someone who doesn't deserve to be loved or respected.

It was difficult to read because for the beginning of the book, she is still a "working girl" and because she talks about what happened when she was 13 to start her on the life of a prostitute. There was a decided Ick factor going on reading about those issues and it was also really sad and disturbing. For a lot of the book, it kept me from getting too invested in the story. It was just hard to read.

But despite this, it was a very good book. Very classic Catherine Anderson. It is definitely the type of story she would tell. Lots of emotion, an atypical heroine, a kind and caring man. So even though the storyline was difficult to read, it still pulled me in, more so as the book progressed. I really wanted Franny to find some peace and happiness in her life.

I wish the ending had been a little more solid on Chase and Franny's plans. Because of her situation, staying in Wolf's Landing would be awkward so I wondered what they planned to do. Anderson didn't settle that and I wish she had. I also wish Amy and Swift (Comanche Heart) hadn't been personas non grata. Again. They barely got a mention and had a seen-but-not-heard appearance at the end. But that's pretty normal for Anderson to do.

So overall, this is a book Catherine Anderson fans will probably like, but it's not exactly a book that will give you a lot of happy feelings. Even though there was a happy ending, I still felt a bit sad when I finished.

A final note - this was the last of the Comanche series, and I have to say the first book, Comanche Moon was the best of the lot. The other books were good, don't get me wrong, I like them, but they just weren't as powerful and well-rounded as first. Comanche Moon was the type of book that made me think and will be one of those unforgettable books that I've read. The other three books in the series were more along the lines of just nice romances to read.

Oh my...I started this one yesterday and it has been an emotional rollercoaster ride.
This was my first one from this author,as well as a first one including Native Americans.I was a bit skeptical nut I still went ahead to keep on track with my Romance Across the ages challenge.
Anyway, this is the first book that I have read where something despicable actually strikes the heroine! In all the others the MC they come real close to -somethingbadabouttohappentothem- but get saved right just on time. This book was raw and it felt like a nice change compared to all the others HRs.It can be heavy and too deep though so if you are looking for a light read don't fish for it.
I felt really sorry for Franny. She was very well portraited. All the spacing out,her traumas, her life, all her emotions, all her fears so very realistic and nicely described. One of the most solid characters I have ever read!
Chase was also nicely developed and the plot was a bit unexpected in some parts. In generally I enjoyed this book.
There are 2 things that I did not like thus 4 not 5 stars in a very well written story and rated as one.Number one being that fact that I didn't understand when Chase's change of heart occured and the ammount of devotion in that whole thing.Felt a bit sudden/out of the blue?
Secondly I really felt that Franny should catch a break. She is tortured almost throughout the book.Maybe I would like a tit less :/

NO
NO
NO

Been mulling over how I would write a review on Comanche Magic, the final (to date) book in the Comanche series. Chase Wolf, hunter and Loretta's son, is the main character and I have to say, he started off as a jerk, but grew on me. Can't say much without spoiling things for future readers, though. Franny (Francine) was the heroine and we first met her in "Indigo Blue" as Indigo's good friend.

Found the book very depressing. Felt the author went out of her way to make the life of a prostitute "better" by giving Franny the ability to: escape to her dreamworld; hours of operation; and her rules. As the story unfolded, I went from cringing to engrossed in the book. There are reasons for the life Franny led....

Chase was the splitting image of his father, Hunter. Chase had been logging with Swift Lopez (Comanche Heart) when he was forced to return home (Wolf's Landing) to recover from a logging accident. Chase's character was set upon self-destruction and he was turning hard and cold. Enjoyed the "talks" Hunter had with his eldest child, Chase, and the words of wisdom that Chase later imparted with Frankie. Well said. A lot of meaning behind his words.

Swift and Amy appeared in the very end, with brief mentions and updates on their lives. Indigo and Jake were her--in the beginning--then faded away. Hunter and Loretta were back as good secondary characters. Parents. :-)

Heartbreaking, so be prepared. I was frustrated with Franny in several places--particularly how she handled "things" in the end. For all that Chase had done for her... nope didn't care for what she did at all.

4 1/2 Stars from This Reader.

Although this isn't my favorite plot, this story was still entertaining and moving to me, and a decent way to wrap up a good series.

Chase Wolf, son of Hunter and Loretta, has lost himself and his upbringing in the hard world of timber. When he returns home to recuperate from an injury, he finds himself more than once being told that he's changed, and not for the better. None of it strikes home so greatly as when he terrorizes his sister's best friend, the local prostitute Franny. He insults Franny and threatens to have her run out of town if she persists on being friends with Indigo. Later, he is appalled by his own actions, and remorseful, when he realizes that Franny isn't some unsavory money-grabber, she's an unfortunate girl who does what she has to survive. Soon, Chase sets out to save Franny from her lifestyle, and eventually falls in love with her.

Franny has blamed herself for nine years for her family's misfortunes, and in order to support them all (eight in total), she began selling herself at the age of 13. When the horror and shame of what she was doing sank in, she began to draw out of herself at those times, almost going into a coma, where she's in a meadow with her family. When Chase Wolf begins coming around, Franny resents him for not only making her believe that a happiness she never thought she deserved was available, but also because she know that Chase would never let her pull back to her peaceful place. She's frightened and confused by this double threat, and does all she can (which isn't much) to get him to go away, all to no avail.

Like I said, the "hooker with a heart of gold" storyline isn't my favorite, but CA does it well, and makes it believable - although I find it odd that both of Wolf's Landings' prositutes have hearts of gold, but oh well. Near the end, I was surprised by the existential tones the storyline took, and impressed. I also liked how it wasn't just the power of Chase's love that fixed Franny, but her family's as well. The only complaints I really have is the ending is abrupt after the struggle Franny and Chase go through, and surprisingly some of the dialogue is a little to modern. B-

This book was exhausting. I loved the other ones in this series, but the emotional arc in this story was about as exciting as winning $1 on a scratch off lotto ticket. Yay.

On paper, I should’ve loved this story. A soiled dove. An understanding, strong (but gentle) male protagonist. A female protagonist with a messed up family life. But no. I literally found myself rolling my eyes at Franny’s never ending willful ignorance. The only reason it was a 3 star instead of a 2 star is because Anderson wrote her in a way that still tugged at my heart strings. Franny has such a messed up past, and you would have to be cruel to dismiss that. HOWEVER, you would think that she would develop some modicum of faith in Chase NINETY PERCENT of the way through the story! Months and months of him proving his love and dedication and she STILL thinks he is going to send her away. Ugh, girl bye. It’s kind of impressive how such a traumatized character ended up being that annoying to me. I only finished the book because I wanted to see Chase happy. He was a literal saint (almost to a ridiculous degree).

Definitely read the other ones in the series, but read this story at your own risk of extreme boredom and annoyance.

I really do love a good Catherine Anderson story. For me, while I feel that her writting is simple and sometimes over the top, she never fails to pull some heart strings. Comanche Magic was no exception.

Franny (h) as a small child the measles had struck her family pretty hard, leaving her mother blind and her younger brother mentaly handicaped. With a family with 8 children her father was forced to work hard and long hours just to make ends meet. One day while taking a roofing job, he feel to his death. Soon it was up to Franny as the eldest child to get a job to save the family. Unfortunatly one thing led to another and at the age of 13 she became a prostitute. 9 years later she's living in Wolf's Landing and working at the saloon. She lives a pretty solitare life, only going home to visit her family once a month ( they think she's a companion to an elderly lady), not really mixing with the locals at Wolf's Landing because no respectable woman would befriend the local whore, she does have one friend though. Indigo is her best friend, and she treasures the moments that she spends with her friend and her friends children.

Chase Wolf (H) has been injured while logging and has gone home to Wolf's landing to stay with his family as he heals. One day when he goes outside for some fresh air, hears some splashing down at the creek. Thinking that it was his sister Indigo and her children he heads that way to watch them. When he gets there he sees that it's not just Indigo but a cute little blonde with her. Hidding so that he can watch them without interupting, he sits down to enjoy their anticts. It's not until he's discoverd and the little blonde leaves that he realizes that she was Franny, the town whore. Fully intedning on protecting his sister, he goes out of his way to make sure that Franny gets the message.... that no matter what she's up to or what scheme she's playing , she needs to leave his family alone.

Once Chase has deliverd his message and Franny has heard him loud and clear, he starts to see that maybe she's not exactly what he thought she was. The more time he spends with her, the more he sees what has lead her to were she is and that even though she's a sporting woman, she is a nice person, no harm to his family and quite possibly a woman he could love. The hard part is convencing Franny of that for she knows that once a whore always a whore, and no one could really love her.

While I think that Catherine Anderson when a little over the top with Franny's dream place, she really caught me with Wolf's words to Franny as he welcomes her to the family...

"'In this house, you will always look up,never down.....Around here no one will trip you,so you need not watch your feet. If you stumble, one of us will catch you from falling. So look up, yes? The best things in life are ahead of you. If you hang your head, you may miss them.""

Everyone should be so lucky to have such a safe and soft place to fall.

What a great way to end the series. I can see some of the criticism that Franny waited to long to finally trust Chase. But she did take small steps towards trusting him throughout the book. I understood why it took so long, she had nine years of trauma to have to unpack. This story was pretty heavy and had me misty-eyed at some points. But I love that Chase ALWAYS has her back. He is there for her not matter what and I loved it.

I did like seeing Hunter and Loretta in the book too. They seemed more like the characters that we saw in Comanche Moon. (Definitely different characters in Indigo Blue) I loved that they also supported Franny no matter what.

I loved the ending and seeing everyone again but wished we got a little bit longer epilogue to see where they are at years later. I have loved this series and my only regret is not reading the books closer together.

I loved this book! Catherine Anderson really tugged at my heart strings with this beautiful and deeply moving story of sorrow and heartache but also compassion, understanding, love and redemption. Ms Anderson always impresses me with the emotional depth of her writing and her ability to draw me into the lives of her characters and make me care deeply about them.

What struck Chase was how sweet and innocent she looked, the kind who made a man want to fight mountain lions for her and win.

A prostitute as a heroine shouldn’t work on many levels but Ms Anderson made Franny such a unique and sympathetic character that my heart ached for her. I didn’t see her as she sees herself – a lost soul and soiled – I saw a lovely, sweet, innocent, warm person who had selflessly sacrificed so much for those she loved. She needed someone who could love her and prove to her that she was worthy of being loved. Chase was just that person.

She had known lots of men, but none had made her feel like this, as if she had been waiting all her life to set eyes on him.

I lost my heart to Chase. His hero status is a bit shaky at first…

“Stay away from my sister and her kids. The last thing she needs is a tarnished little whore playing on her sympathy and messing up her life.”

but, with a little wisdom from his father, he soon becomes a wonderful hero who is kind, patient and compassionate, willing to love Franny unconditionally. I sighed when he told her:

“You are one in a million. Beautiful, sweet, desirable. Being with you makes me feel ten feet tall.”

I was so proud when he confronts Franny’s self-centred family with some hard home truths.

The romance is handled with sensitivity and the scene where Chase finally makes love to Franny is both beautiful and sensual.

I love Chase’s wonderful parents; his full-blooded Comanche father, Hunter – purer of heart and noble to his bone - and his mother, Loretta – with a heart the size of Texas. Hunter follows the old ways and he imparts so many pearls of wisdom.

“The standards you set—only a saint could live by them, and I’m no saint. Not anything close.”

“They are a map I drew for you, Chase, nothing more. I tried to mark the way clearly, but as with all maps, there is more than one route. You must choose the way you will go.”
(Hunter to Chase)

“Around here, no one will trip you, so you need not watch your feet. If you stumble, one of us will catch you from falling. So look up, yes? The best things in life are ahead of you, daughter. If you hang your head, you may miss them.” (Hunter to Franny)

I love how the whole Wolf family are willing to embrace Franny and accept her without hesitation.

The Epilogue left me with a deep sigh of satisfaction and a few tears.

This is the final book in Ms Anderson’s outstanding Comanche series and a story that really touches the heart. This is a series not to be missed.

***SIGH*** what an amazing ending for this terrific series. I have only the best things to say about it. I adored every character , every event and every situation developed in it. The author succeeded creating an amazing family, one with terrific values, the ones you want for yourself and those you love.

I must admit I never thought I would get to like a series about Comanches so much, I never had read anything about them before nor did I was sure what they exactly where. I'm ashamed to recognize it but I guess that's what is so amazing about books, you get to know more about everything. Well after reading this series not only do I know a lot about the Comanche culture but I got to love their way of thinking and doing things. Not always agreeing but at least I got to understand the reasons behind their behavior.

In this installment we get to read about Chase, the younger of Hunter's children. I guess I didn't had huge expectations about this book because book 3 had not been as good as the first 2 for me and I thought this one would be even worse, but I was so wrong about this. Book 4 was definitely way better than Indigo's book, and just as good as book 2 was. IMHO this installment made me fall in love with this series all over again. Non of the 3 books published after book 1 were as good as the original but they are truly worth to read.

In book 4 we see Chase falling in love with the town prostitute. I must admit I thought this would be cheesy as hell, but it really wasn't because the girl would never have been doing nothing of the sort if she had have the chance to do something else. The book gives us an amazing view about her life, a girl who had to fight what life gave to her. It helps us see how some are not as lucky and have to face things some of us would not even dream are possible to someone to suffer. I guess reading about people going to things like this helps us remember how lucky we are and appreciate things more. For books like this is why I love to read so much. While I love paranormal romance and Urban fantasy the most, books like this are the ones that make me feel I can always grow as a human being and learn more.

I strongly recommend everybody to read this amazing series and get to learn about this amazing Comanche family because they have a lot to teach us all! Happy reading!

I feel emotionally exhausted after finishing Comanche Magic. I enjoyed this book but the heaviness doesn't let up. A prostitute as the main character was new terrain for me. I enjoyed the change of pace but Franny has quite a lot of issues to work through and her story is a sad one. Chase was pretty dreamy even though I felt like he changed his tune towards Franny rather quickly (don't want to spoil anything). At one point I thought finally we'll see some happiness and lightheartedness but, no, we delve back into deep waters. Catherine Anderson has such talent when it comes to impossible situations and heartbreaking characters. You can't help but invest yourself, root for them and wait to be rewarded at the end of their journey.

After reading Comanche Moon, I snatched up the rest of the series when I found reasonably priced copies. They were worth every penny! This series will stay with me, truly enjoyable. Comanche Moon is my favorite of the lot and has a special place on my keeper shelf. Strangely, I already want to reread it...

This is the only series I have read by Catherine Anderson, but I did read all four books. There is a patern to her heroines. They are all afraid of sex due to their life experiences. Fortunately the corresponding heroes are all patient. In spite of the similarities (witnessed mother's rape and murder, raped, attempted rape, child rape/prostitution) I enjoyed all of the stories, this one maybe my favorite.

2.5-3 stars! Whelp-I've read all of this series now! I can now say that book one was by far the best in the series. There was something sparkly and magical about it that the others just didn't possess. I did love the series as a whole! This particular book just had the most wishy-washy characters and it drove me bonkers. For example-the main hero, Chase, would look at the girl, Franny, (we are talking a glance) and she would instantly think, 'He hates me and will never love me!!' All from one glance in her direction...GHAHDKJAFLKDJFA!!! (expressing my feelings is hard sometimes) You know what they say about assume y'all. Don't do it! All in all, no regrets and definitely read Comanche Moon! :)

This has to be the stupidest heroine I've read TO DATE.

So like it's not already bad enough the heroine's a prostitute, Anderson has to make her a PREGNANT prostitute. Ok fine I'll roll with it. But then after everything this hero does for this stupid cow (seriously he's a god damn saint) she fucks off and avoids him for months THEN tells him he should get over that and just welcome her back with open arms? I wanted to vomit.

Book 1 - Comanche Moon - was EPIC.
Book 2 was basically the shit show second romance that makes me hate that trope BUT I it wasn't completely terrible so I kept going.
Book 3? Not bad, the heroine was a twit but a harmless twit so sure I'll keep going.
Book 4, THIS book? I wished I'd never read it. UGH!

I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of this book for ages. Finally managed to find it for $20 on half.com. Even though I'm a die hard fan of Anderson's novels, I went into it braced for the worst, since the book had a couple neutral reviews.

Chase Wolf, the son of Hunter and Loretta from Comanche Moon, comes home to recover from a logging accident. He's outraged when he learns that his sister Indigo is good friends with the prostitute of the local saloon. He falls in love with her pretty quickly, but Franny has a lot of secrets and issues that prevent her from letting him whisk her away to a better life.

This really was a good book, but it just wasn't Anderson's best. The setup was great, I just think she could have done more with it. It went by pretty quickly, also. I think it was a lot shorter than her usual novels.

I am sorry to say but I was not into this book compared to the previous ones. I felt that the relationship in this story forced and I wasn't that invested in their relationship. There were very great parts in the novel but for the most part I skimmed them (which was very hard since I am a huge fan of the series). I give this book 3/5 stars. I really do like Franny and Chase but I wasn't really feeling their relationship.

This is an amazing series however and I do recommend people reading it!

Ya ampun ampe mengharu biru :P...

"Life is a gamble. We're all born. We all have to die. All there is in between is getting the most out of life that we can. Bad things happen sometimes, and I can't promise you they won't happen to us. But I can tell you this. God isn't up there picking people out as targets because they did something wrong."

Review on this book. It may contain slight spoilers but nothing major.

I finished reading the 4th installment of the Comanche series by Catherine Anderson. I'll start by saying the first and last book in my opinion are the best. This book, WOW. Don't read it if you can't handle triggers. But if you can, this is so worth it. You can tell the author digs deep here to give a voice to women who haven't historically had one. This read was intense. We know women had it rough - this story through the eyes of a young prostitute was heartbreaking, overwhelming, and beautiful all at once. She tackles issues of severe trauma, feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness all while providing hope and eloquence at the same time. This one got personal for me, while I don't have the sexual trauma history - I have a history of long term childhood trauma, abuse and neglect, feelings of despair in youth, lack of self worth, and the religious trauma this book did a sickeningly good job of pointing out. Tale of a trauma survivor who keeps expecting the other shoe to drop.... A feeling any of us who've gone through trauma know so well - it overcomes us even in the best of times as we feel it can't be real to have something really good happen and if it does, when will the nightmare start again? I found myself crying so many times, not because it was awful but because the beauty in her words was so relatable and I was so happy someone put so many of these issues on paper like this. The hero, Chase, was just amazing. He wasn't hollow but had his own issues to overcome in this journey. His eventual understanding of the fact that he never had to think about if his family was there for him while others never recieve that gift that is so critical to being a happy healthy person, and his use of this to take up for the woman he has fallen in love with - is beautiful. He knows he can't love her problems away but needs to help her find the way to loving herself as worthy - the emotional intelligence we all wish men had (LOL!). I love this book. This is going to be a hard one to get over. *Big sigh*

Handsome and half Comanche, Chase Wolf sees a golden-haired girl with green eyes and is smitten at first sight. He decided to set out to make her his. He learns a great deal of unpleasant facts about her which altered his perception of her. Chase had a change of heart helping his damsel in destress after speaking to the people around her finally realizing she had no choice to do what she did. Even after discovering her secrets, he didn't let anything get in his way.

This was a very emotional historical romance with a great pace and likable characters. I kept saying to myself poor Franny. The sacrifices this poor woman made for her family was immeasurable. I thought this was a sweet read.

3 ⭐

Amazing story, it's the perfect way to finish this amazing series. This book follows Chase's story, the son of the prophecy, and his love for Franny, an angel who has too many secrets. But Chase is his father's son and goes deep when it comes to love and life. And Franny cannot resist the comanche magic that weave its power around her heart. Beautiful story wonderfully written. Just loved it.

1 ⭐️ I was leery about reading this at all, given that Comanche Moon was nearly perfect and a tough act to follow. From the first glimpses into Chase’s mind, I could already tell I didn’t like him. He was generally disgusting and his thoughts and statements were mysoginistic, gross, and ridiculous. He was nothing like his father, Hunter, who was kind, respectful, and compassionate to women. Chase admits to visiting a brothel at 16 to “diddle a fat whore” and afterward, while the other boys’ fathers chastise them about “disease and discretion” Hunter speaks to him instead about not preying on the helpless and then throwing money at them to ease a conscience. He’s so good. 😭 Then later, Hunter visits the local sad-eyed prostitute and offers her money and a way out of the life should she choose. It doesn’t state explicitly, but I wonder if he sees little Amy in these women, abused by men and forced into something she couldn’t choose. It’s not like women had a lot of options back in the day.

Of course, this lesson means absolutely nothing to Chase, and he admits to visiting plenty of brothels over the years, trash talking the “painted whores” all while BUYING THEIR SERVICES. The first time Chase sees Franny she’s mostly naked in the river, and he hides to watch her like a creepy Peeping Tom, musing and judging her various body parts and generally acting like a pig. Franny feels dehumanized by the work she’s forced into, literally dissociates from her body to get through it, and he acts just like her clients, like she’s worthless as a person beyond her looks. In his mind, she goes from an angel he wants to protect to a “worthless whore” out to steal his sister’s money the second he finds out.

Likewise, his sister, Indigo, and her husband both plead with Chase to treat shy Franny kindly, that she’s an innocent stuck in a bad situation, and what does he do? Corner her the next day, cruelly taunt her with money to sleep with her, threaten to ruin her and have her run out of town, and tells her to “Stay away from my sister and her kids. The last thing she needs is a tarnished little whore playing on her sympathy and messing up her life.” What a prick! He enjoys making her nervous and uncomfortable, and looks at her in a sleazy way now instead of teasing. At this point, he’s trash, he’s heard nothing that his amazing father, his sister, his brother in law, and everyone else have said.

Supposedly he becomes sweet later on but it’s way too little too late and I couldn’t stand anymore. If he’s not being a douche to Franny, he’s whining and throwing a pity party for himself to anyone who will listen. Pages and pages of : “Right. But you don't like me much." Chase punctuated that with another swig of whiskey. "Funny, that. You're all so determined not to judge that little whore. But what about me?” He talks about how the 1/4 Comanche in him has people judging him and treating him unfairly and DOES NOT EVEN HEAR HIMSELF when he hardcore judges Franny for her occupation two seconds later. The narcissism and disconnect is real. I do have to say that I LOVE Hunter’s response (and verbal slap down) though : “Franny is a victim."
"And I gather I'm not?"
"Only if you choose to be." His father turned to regard him. "By your own words, the men in the camps were cruel to you only until you fought back. I trained you to fight, if you will remember. I know that when you finally struck back, you did so with great vengeance, as is the way of the People. The Frannies of this world have no weapons," his father went on huskily, "and no strong arm with which to wield a weapon if they had one. Heartless men use them, and in order to survive, they must yield. It is their only choice and their greatest shame. One from which there is no escape. Victims, Chase, one and all.”
Hunter is as amazing as he was 20 years prior in Comanche Moon and his son is a sad, pale shadow of his greatness.

Of course Chase immediately dismisses his fathers words, stating it’s the prostitutes own faults because he says they don’t accept help when it’s offered. 🙄 Enjoy this sampling of Chase’s thoughts/words from just the first 40 pages -

- “He dragged his gaze from the back of the blonde’s clinging skirt and said, "Pleased to meet you, Franny." He thought "Fanny" would suit her better.”
(He continues to call her Fanny to several people, reducing her down to a body part)

- “Chase didn't give a shit what Indigo called it; a whore was a whore.”
(When Indigo tried to explain that Franny was a victim of circumstance)

- “Doesn't it worry you, Jake, having your kids subjected to a whore's influence?"
(His brother in law) "I'm surprised at you, Chase. I thought your father taught you better than to judge others by the world's measuring stick.”

- “I've never met a whore yet who didn't have her eye out for an easy dollar.”

- (His brother in law) “And that gal's name is Franny, not Fanny. Tells me where your mind's at."
(Chase) "Where else? For the right price, that cute little fanny of hers is any man's playground.”

- “Franny with the green eyes had made her bed, and by God, she could sleep in it.”

- “She flinched as his leathery fingers grazed her ear. As he drew his hand back, she saw that he held a gleaming gold coin. With practiced fingers he rolled it in a shimmering path over his palm, gave it a flip, and caught it within the circle of his thumb and forefinger. Flashing the money at her, he said in a silken voice, "Ten dollars. Fancy that, me plucking it out of thin air."
His gaze trailed lazily to her bodice. "And there's more where that came from." His white teeth flashed as he spoke, and his eyes heated with blatant invitation.
"How many ten-dollar gold pieces would I have to find behind that pretty little ear of yours to talk you into spending the morning with me?"
Franny felt so humiliated she wanted to burrow into the dirt and disappear.”

- “Let me put it a little plainer then. Why would a female of your persuasions want to spend so much time with a sweet young woman like my sister? What's in it for you? And please don't tell me you enjoy playing nursemaid to two children."
A female of her persuasions? Franny had heard herself described in far baser terms, but even so it hurt. "Indigo is my friend. I enjoy being with her, that's all."
"Bullshit," he shot back. "I know your kind, don't think I don't, and you always have an ulterior motive. What is it, money? You hope to play on her sympathy and get into her pockets?”

- “Watching her, he couldn't help but draw a comparison between her and all the other prostitutes he had ever known. There was no similarity. Franny whatever-her-last-name-was had the mark of a lady.”

- “A whore has no business being as thick as thieves with a decent young woman.”

- (His sister) “I'm the only friend she has, Chase."
He gave a derisive snort. "Since when do whores expect to have friends? Jesus, Indigo, surely you can't be that naive.”

- “All in the world he had done was proposition a prostitute. If that was a criminal offense, add his name to a long list. Sex was the girl's business, for Christ's sake. It wasn't as if he had insulted a lady or something.”

- “He supposed the whole lot of them expected him to go to the saloon, hat in hand, to apologize. To a whore, of all the crazy things”
(as if being a prostitute makes her less than human, and undeserving of an apology)

- “You came out here to ask me to go apologize to Fanny or Franny or whatever in hell her name is.”

- “I'm not bitter, I just know her kind, and trust me, she's pure poison. Don't believe she's all that she pretends to be, not for a minute."
"What is it she pretends to be?"
Chase wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. "Hell, I don't know. Innocent! She pretends to be innocent, and I know damned well she can't be."
"Has she said this to you? That she is innocent?"
"No, of course not. It's just a look she has. You know, all wide-eyed and—" He broke off.”
(He accuses her of being a lying, deceiving poison because... *checks notes* she has wide eyes.)

- “I'll go over and apologize to her," he whispered hoarsely. "I won't mean a damned word of it, but I'll do it. I hope that'll satisfy you.”

I'm not sure how to go about writing this review.

All I will say is the plot was simple but it is Catherine Anderson's writing that turned it into a story that touched me so deeply I really had no intention of conveying any of that in a review. So I won't.

This happened when reading Indigo Blue (Comanche, #3) by Catherine Anderson also and I chose not to review that book after reading it.

I rated the 1st in this series Comanche Moon (Comanche, #1) by Catherine Anderson 5 star rating, and in my opinion this book was just as great. Both books center around plots entirely different from one another.

It is Catherine Anderson's writing that places these books a head above the rest.

A note: I couldn't touch the original out-of-print version of this book and have been waiting for it's reissue for a year. But, after all the crap with reissue re-writes and editing I had second thoughts of picking this one up. So glad I did though. IF there was any re-writing done on this new edition, it doesn't matter a bit to me. It was that good just as it is.
