I find that I don’t love this one as much as I did the first time I read it. Call it a change in taste and how much sweetness I can handle in a book. I still enjoy it though, but it goes from a 5 ⭐️ s to a 4 ⭐️ s read.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
^^CON-FREAKING-QUERED!^^
For all that is sweet and holy, I freaking loved Conquest. Consider me one of the groupies’ cus Jesse and Evan has me as a notch on their belt. Let’s leave out the fact about female parts; I have a mouth and all that. Ooops did I just write that? You damn right I did.
I definitely consider this book an insta love, but in the sense of finding your soul mate and really connecting with another person. Jesse is an up and coming music star, all he needs is his big break. It’s looking gloomy though, cus his band keeps getting the boot when they send their demos out. He has hope though, but he is wondering how long he can keep the dream alive. He is gorgeous, has the voice that would make your mouth hit the floor in awe and he’s gay. His dream is to be making music like his idol Evan Arden. Well Jesse is about to get his wish with a whole lot of Evan on the side, but the journey in making his music won’t be easy.
Evan Arden is back after a long hiatus, with no idea why he’s back to the life he wanted to escape but he knew he just had to be back. Looking for a really good music scene, he gets the recommendation to check out a band called Conquest in a not so excellent looking bar. Well Evan is not disappointed when lead singer Jesse steps onto the stage. The young man has presence and is musically gifted, and the world should hear him sing. Evan does what he can, brings in his old contacts from his record company, and leaves the rest up to them.
Jesse and Evan’s first meeting and sparks are flying. Evan is hellaciously hot and Jaime is fire breathing sexy. A night of hot love and deep connection lead to both men finding something, but will the world of fame and fans pull them apart? Read and find out.
I loved Jesse and Evan, LOVE THEM. They have serious attitude with its own pair of gloves that will slap you in the face. Jesse is just super awesome and sexy and is playful dialogue just makes the book all the more better. Evan sounds like a dream wrapped in whipped cream. I love Evan’s possessiveness over Jesse, just so freaking hot. If they would invite me, I would be down for a “ménage et trois” or I could just watch them.
Love these guys, love the story and can’t wait to get some more of Evan and Jesse.
SideNote- Tim was a douche bag, that girl drummer in the group needs to get the hell out. She really pisses me off. Greg needs to shut the feck up and back up. Brandon needs a hot man.
Not bad.
I'm reminded why I don't really like "rocker" romance books. Musicians are so often written as ridiculously arrogant and that grates on me. Jesse Alexander, the up-and-coming music phenom has conceit and ego so huge it's almost comical.
"He wasn't used to being around another guy who he felt was more attractive than himself"
"He decided he would love doing photo shoots...part of it could be because the extra attention he got since the photographers always wanted him in the front, in the most dramatic sexy poses, or shots of him solo."
Ugh...so arrogant.
HOWEVER, the moments (and there are gloriously many of them) that Jesse and Even were together were surprisingly sweet and tender and steamy and overshadowed all the bit of annoyance I had. I loved their relationship. And I loved that they found commonality and acceptance and understanding in each other.
I'm committed to reading book 2, though I fear once Jesse makes it big, his ego might turn me away...we'll see...
What can I say about this book? It ROCKED! (bad pun) Seriously. I really had a hard time putting it down. I loved the character interaction and the sound of their voices. I mentioned before that my major peeve was the shift in POV for one paragraph to the next. I shift POV all the time but not THAT drastically so for it to bother me is the ONLY bad thing I can say. AND, it wasn't that annoying as you read so I couldn't even take off a 1/2 star for it or anything. SJ shifts POV, BUT the voices of the characters are distinct enough that I think after you get going you KNOW who is talking. There were some brilliant lines. I'd love to quote it. It really was a great book. Highly recommended!
Forgot to say... one thing I truly enjoyed was the songs. She wrote songs to add to the depth of Jesse (and the band's) authenticity. I felt the emotion way more because I could almost "hear" them by the end. I wish a sound-track went with the book! They were beautiful.
This book excelled my expectations. I have only 3 words that best describes the story: IT. KICKED. ASS! I'll admit that I'm a serious fan of the Heaven series by Jet and devoted to that being the best rock group stories but, oh yeah, now there's a but people and not the tight 2 cheek muscled ones. When Jesse and Evan and we sure can't forget the guitarist which is a little too adamant about being 'straight' came into play I was blown away. Totally! Reading the lyrics I envisioned what I thought they would sound like and was impressed by them.
At the end of the story you can catch a glimpse of the next story after this called FEAR, but there's no way, no how I was going to read it and sit back eager to read it having only gotten a taste of what's to come. I'm not a very patient guy. One of my failed human traits, but aren't we all like that? :snorts:
Now I thought for sure Tim would seek revenge but I guess we'll just have to wait and see if plays up in the next book, hmmm.
Anyhow it's a two thumbs up. I even dedicate one song to Jesse: Tongue Tied by Faber Drive. :laughing:
I've had this sitting on my Kindle for a while, and my resolution for this year was to catch up on reading all the books I already own. No doubt that some will be better then others, as my taste has seemed to change a bit recently.
Thankfully, I still really liked this. Both Jesse and Evan are singers. Evan has already made it big, and Jesse is on the brink of all his dreams coming true. These two men were both good looking, and they knew it. I found that to be a bit more honest then when books have these beautiful men and they have no idea of how attractive they are. I also feel you would have to be self confident to chase your dreams of stardom. Evan and Jesse had self confidence, especially Jesse. This didn't make me dislike him. I found his cockiness appealing and refreshingly different.
There was a small cast of secondary characters, some for the reader to love, and some for us to hate. I look forward to learning more about these characters in future books. There was one character driven storyline that seemed to just disappear without any real ending, but it may come up in future books. I do hope so.
The overall plot was a little obvious, but I was so happy reading about these two men, I really didn't mind. I will be reading more of this series in the near future.
After waiting so long to read this I was a little worried it wouldn't live up to my expectations, I'm happy to say I had nothing to worry about.
This was a great story to lose yourself in. A main couple that were so damn cute together,and secondary characters you wanted to either hug or strangle.
One of my favorite parts was the interaction between Jesse and his brother Brandon. So funny but so realistic too. In fact pretty much everyone was believable,
Overall a great easy read, recomended to anyone that likes the rock star theme.
Lastly I have to agree with Wade, I would of loved to be able to hear the music to the songs. It seems unfair we can get movie soundtracks but not book soundtracks. Extra praise for S J Frosts lyrics.
ETA I still enjoyed this one, but I had forgotten how much sex was used. The reality is also thin on the ground, but I'm OK as Evan and Jess are still adorable.
This is a very good story with only a few problems. The characters are likable and interesting and the tension is held consistent throughout the story with a good pace. The writing is evocative and emotional without being too angsty and off putting. Despite its lengthy page count, the story is engaging and quick to read. There are a few problems that may turn readers off but I think the overall story, characters, and plot will help overcome any issues.
Jesse Alexander is a gifted man. He’s incredibly intelligent, a fabulous singer and can play just about any instrument. He’s definitely not perfect though as his cocky, arrogant, and over bearing attitude tends to lose band members faster than he can replace them. Lucky for Jesse, he gets his big break when Evan Arden hears Jesse’s band playing one night. The resulting affect brings Jesse to the attention of a record producer and soon Jesse is living out his dream. Not only is Jesse’s band Conquest producing an album but Jesse is dating Evan. However, their bubble of happiness is threatened when the reality of record sales and the labels’ choices conflict with Jesse and Evan’s relationship.
The plot of the story is very character driven as the book spends a lot of time setting up Evan and Jesse, then developing their relationship. Perhaps this part of the book could be tighter and have fewer scenes but I really enjoyed each scene. Although the two men fall in love very easily and there is little conflict or tension, the overshadowing of a future breakup looms very large. The book goes into great detail about the men’s relationship, their personalities and past, showing how they fall in love, but there is a heavy overtone that this particular happiness can’t last. The big breakup is telegraphed very early on so the emphasis on how the two fell in love and how happy they were might have been heavy handed but it is romantic and interesting. The big breakup is predictable, almost from the very beginning, so the tension created is slightly artificial. There is no question of the couple somehow side stepping their fate so the book takes pains to show the depth of their emotion and love in a very engaging manner.
After the predictable break up scene though, the story continues with the same tone and pace as before. This is somewhat confusing as the men still act like friends and the reason for their breakup becomes convoluted. The reason is initially set up clearly from the beginning of the book but once the two break up, there is an emphasis on the personal pain and neither man really questions why it had to happen. It is almost as if they too felt the break up was inevitable and just accept that. This ultimately has their resolution feeling weak and empty. The reasons for their break up still exist but they just arbitrarily decide to get back together again. This is especially jarring when those reasons and concerns still exist and are neither resolved nor mentioned again – instead they are just dropped entirely.
Not only is the couple’s reunion suspect and not entirely explained, but there are other unanswered questions and problems, such as Jesse’s drummer Trish and her issues. There is an excerpt for a sequel at the back of the book so perhaps everything will be wrapped up and addressed in the next book. I am not a fan of that method – leaving several hanging questions and problems for the next book in a series – so this was perhaps more frustrating for me than other readers.
The characterization is decent with Evan and Jesse shinning. Evan and Jesse are given depth and interest, showing their vulnerabilities and fears. Due to the emphasis on building their relationship, the reader is treated to a long intimate look at their conversations, deepening emotions, and of course hot sex. This leaves the two well developed and given much more involvement than any of the secondary characters. I couldn’t help adoring Jesse’s bratty behavior and his unending loyalty towards Evan even as Evan offers his own kind of support and love. The large supporting cast though range from wooden, almost stereotypical characters such as the token female in Trish and the homophobic assistant Tim to more variety and interest with Jesse’s brother, Brandon, and the guitar player, Kenny. Since Kenny and Brandon are very close to Jesse, they are given more development beyond the surface characterization. Brandon is slightly inconsistent as he ranges from wildly protective over Jesse to absent minded brother but sets up an interesting byplay that will likely result in his own book (he is gay of course!).
There are some significant problems that affect the writing and enjoyment of the book unfortunately. The first is the horrible, truly horrible, head hopping. The story is told in third person point of view and switches from head to head, often paragraph to paragraph. This is especially bad during the sex scenes where one short paragraph will be from Jesse’s perspective and the next will be from Evan’s point of view and the third paragraph will jump back to Jesse’s head. This is not confusing so much as annoying and frustrating because it happens for the entire length of the 377 page book. This head hopping occurs in every scene, almost every page, but becomes occasionally painful during the sex scenes. Here is an example:
Jesse caressed Evan’s face with his fingertips, having so many things he wanted to say to him, to tell him he had fallen in love with him, that he could never picture any of his days to come without him, but feared saying the words so soon.
Evan gazed up at Jesse, seeing an emotion on his beautiful face, in his stunning indigo eyes, that he prayed was true, and at the same moment, knowing he didn’t deserve it. He lifted his hand, resting it on the side of Jesse’s face. Jesse closed his eyes. He turned his head toward Evan’s hand, laying a warm kiss in his palm.
Evan drew his legs along Jesse’s sides. Jesse leaned his weight down on his left elbow and slipped his right hand with lube-slicked fingers down Evan’s body. He gently massaged and worked Evan open, wanting to make him feel as physically special as he had become to Jesse emotionally. He felt Evan’s body melt under him. He slowly withdrew his fingers, took hold of his own arousal, and guided it into Evan.
Beyond the point of view mania are the prose choices. For the most part the prose is engaging and descriptive, injecting a great deal of emotion and depth into the story. There are several dramatic scenes however where the prose is slightly jarring, reminding me that I’m reading a story. Some of these choices are the use of complex vocabulary when the two men are having a heartfelt conversation where the extremely articulate prose seems at odd with the emotion and tone.
For the most part this is an enjoyable book with two men who fall in love easily but have to work together to sustain their relationship. The characters are interesting and the music setting definitely draws the reader in, but the book ultimately felt as if the characters and story were going exactly where the author wanted them to go. There was a lack of spontaneity and the entire book felt almost too scripted. This isn’t bad and as I’ve said, I rather enjoyed reading this. The caveat is just that there are no surprises, even when the characters themselves would seem to demand a change. Perhaps the sequel will hold more surprises but really either way, I look forward to reading it. Check this out, I think you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.
Fuck yes!!! Hot and sappy, my favourite!
This book did it for me, I don't know how to describe it. But yes. Conquest is an amazing book, and it has great characters. Its a very sweet story and might not be for everyone. I know some of the things in this book are usually no no's for me, and that was interesting for me because I did not hate them in here.
Jesse, was a character I found rather adorable from the beginning. Even with his insane temper and nerdy ways I was smitten with him. I hated his father and mother throughout this book. It was something I hoped would have been resolved, but it was not essential either. He is an amazingly gifted singer and that was shown as the book progressed. His talent for songwriting as well was shown at certain points of the book. And I just loved his relationship with Evan.
Evan, for me was a character I loved and felt so so, sorry for. He had his fair share of tough times and then when he was finally happy he was forced to do something he never wanted to do. His character was far more complex for me than Jesse's, but no more interesting. He just had some dimension that Jesse did not need to have. But Evan's character needed the complexity and the mystery. It was all part of his charm, which I have to admit won me over.
Jesse & Evan!
[image error]
All the secondary characters were good additions, some I loved and some I hated. Others I had a love/hate relationship with. As I said this book is not for everyone, but you should give it a go and see what you think of it. I was so glad I read this and I have read it several times just to get a dose of these two. I love my sap, but when a book combines sap and hot sex I just about give it every star I can.
Highly recommend it!
I mostly liked it.
What I didn’t like:
The POV changes were just random shifts with no warning or indication it was switching. It was very confusing and I had to reread a lot to try and figure which character was speaking or try to figure out whose POV we were getting. Also some POV just made me go WTF? Why did we need Tim’s or Gregg’s or other minor characters POV? All it did was take me out of the story. Also WTF was up with Tim?
The sex; way too much sex for my tastes. If they weren’t having sex they were talking about having sex
It was slow getting into the story for me. I never really got into it until after the two MC’s were together then I started liking it. Until
I loved this book. From the beginning to the end. Conquest is yet another struggling band trying to make its mark and get a record deal while they play any dive or hole in the wall in Chicago that will hire them. What Conquest does have going for itself is lead singer Jesse Alexander with a sexy voice and a gorgeous body. Evan Arden is a gifted singer who has dominated the charts for years. Three years ago he disappeared completely, leaving fans and the record industry wondering where he'd gone and why. Evan in Chicago where his record label is now based at (Phoenix) and his manager Greg how now resides their. For Evan it's as if lightning strikes the first time he sees and hears Jesse. For Jesse it's unbelievable that the singer he's idolized for years thinks his band has the talent to make it happen. More importantly Jesse is incredibly drawn to Evan. The two start a passionate love affair like nothing either of them has ever felt. Jesse who has never had intercourse is very arrogant and cocky with a charming personality. Evan who is battling his own demons has never been in love and doesn't trust many people. Evan broke Jesse's heart because his manager thought that it would be best for his career it also broke him. This book made me laugh and cry it was well written and the MC drew me right in. The side characters are good as well.
I can't wait to read the next book.
4.5 Stars!
Over 400 pages....eek! I was a bit intimidated of this so I didn't ever pick it up on my own...cut to April challenges! This book was actually picked for me for 2 separate challenges (in different groups). Wooo!
Musicians get me a little weak in the knees...can you imagine what 2 sexy as sin musicians can do to me?! :)
Jesse and his band Conquest are ready for the big time...but all they can do is keep playing and waiting for that big break!
Evan is a major rockstar who just needed a break.
We did get the insta-love thing BUT how this story is written and things play out, I think the author made the right choice with doing it. This book has great flow, it's wonderfully written, great one-liners and witty banter between Jesse and EVERYONE, the MCs as well as the secondary characters are all great and really likable! I wonder if there is a story of Brandon...or maybe even Kenny (that would be awesome!)
I absolutely cannot wait to read book 2!
One of the reasons I've waited so long to read this is because of how long it is. I sometimes get intimated by long books because that means there will no doubt be a lot of sex scenes (I'm like a nun here, less is more when it comes to reading sex, IMO. XP). However, even though it took me forever to finally read this book, I did enjoy it a lot.
I loved all these characters. From Jess' arrogance to Evan's possessive to Brandon's protective tendencies to how funny Kenny was and even to how much I hated Greg and Tom. Jess is the typical egotistical rockstar, even though in the beginning he's not actually a rockstar. He still has the stadium sized ego to go with his arrogance. Evan was a surprise. Whereas he's the actual rockstar, he's pretty down to earth and easy going. Even when going into a shady neighborhood and getting his nice SUV striped, he was calm about it (that was also a very funny scene). I think these two definitely are a cute couple and made most of the book sweet. That's parts that weren't sweet were a bit angsty but I ended up enjoying that part the most. I suppose I loved to see them both suffer :P
While I enjoyed the story, the beginning had too much sex for my liking. I felt like once Jess and Evan met it was just a long sex scene for a few chapters. It put me off a bit and I had to take a break more than once because it was hard for me to get passed them. I finally just started skimming/skipping pages of it because I wasn't interested in that. In addition to the abundance of sex, there was major head-hopping going on. It confused me a time or two on what was happening and who was saying it.
I have to say, though, one of the highlights of this book was the music and the band. Whenever I read about musicians or any type of job really, I want to know the details of what their doing especially if it's a big part of the theme. In this case, becoming rockstars was the main focus (aside from the romance, of course). So, to my delight there was more than I expected about music in this book. Lyrics, descriptions of instruments, descriptions of shows and concerts, studio recordings. I was very impressed with that and that right there made up for the numerous sex scenes.
All in all, I quite enjoyed this one. It's definitely recommended to any rocker lovers out there and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series and seeing Jesse and Evan getting a true HEA.
I really enjoyed this story. Overall, I actually loved Jesse and Evan, even though Jesse was extremly narcissistic and annoying and Evan had a tendency to be an over-protective asshole. I guess maybe I loved them because they were so cute and hot together? The story is mostly really sweet but it did get extremely angsty towards the end. I was so frustrated that I wanted to scream and throw my Kindle just to keep me from crying. But don't worry, they do get a HFN at the end.
My biggest issue with this story was all of the head-hopping POV shifts. It would often switch back and forth in the middle of a paragraph! In the beginning, I was really confused and annoyed, but by the end I guess I just became numb to it. I hope the author doesn't continue this style throughout the other books of this series. Also, I did get a little bored with a lot of the "band" stuff and the story probably could have been a bit shorter. It seemed a bit drawn out to me.
I will probably continue with the other books of this series, but not today. I'm just not in the mood for more angsty, rocker drama right now.
The two main characters were great, especially Jesse. I really liked the fact that he was brash and mouthy and got himself in trouble. I also liked his brother and their banter a lot. The progression of the MC's relationship was a bit extreme, in a couple of different ways, especially how fast it started. I would have expected more caution, given who Evan was and all he had to lose. But the writing was good and got even better as the book progressed.
I liked the band members, and the interactions there. I was irritated with Greg for pushing the guys apart and then pushing them together - I wondered if he felt as conflicted as he acted, and appreciated that it wasn't a simple black-and-white situation. I guess Evan's skill with words as a lyricist could be the reason he is sometimes so surprisingly articulate. Overall a book that kept me turning pages, and I did immediately move into the sequel.
I LOVED this story, LOVED Jesse and Evan and I don't really know what more to say except WOW!! Bring me more. This was a very sweet, tender love story that did have me crying near the end thinking just maybe I wouldn't get my HEA, can't wait to start the next book, I immediately purchased all the rest of the series which I don't normally do in case the stories start to lose it or become repetitive. I have a good feeling about these and I do love S.J. Frost's books so I'm not worried. I highly recommend her, she's a great story teller.
I'll admit I'm a huge fan of rockstar books and this one is now one of my all-time faves. I loved Jesse and Evan - loved that they were both fragile in their own way, yet strong when they other needed it. I was heartbroken at the sacrifice Evan made and so happy with the eventual outcome. Romantic, angsty, fluffy, humorous, sexy - basically I need rolled up into one spectacular read. I'm off to read the sequel. ♥ to Jesse and Evan.
Awwwwww... Evan and Jesse are adorable. I laughed and cried with them. I loved the quiet moments and their struggle to be together. I loved the lyrics, especially from Shattered.
Additionally, the story brought us great supporting characters – Brandon, Julian, Kenny, JJ and the memory of Evan's Dad Ethan.
Thank you for this fluffy, endearing story. Can't wait to read the follow-ups.
I'm sure I'll have a longer review up on my blog at some point, but the short version is that I didn't enjoy this book at all. I thought it was terrible on a number of levels and if I could give it a zero star rating, I would've.
From a technical standpoint, the dialogue was stilted, the prose was exposition heavy and excruciatingly detailed in the way the author needed to describe every piece of furniture in every room, every garment each protagonist wore, every feature of the cars they drove... I felt like she should have gotten paid for product placement ads. The POV was all over the place, changing midscene, adding the POV of random characters for a page or three paragraphs...never to be heard from again. As well, the secondary characters themselves were one-dimensional and one-note (the protective brother, the fat, sweaty bigot, the record producer with a heart of gold) and the plot was contrived, cliche and hinged on ridiculously overwrought drama. The characters had no growth, perfect people and a perfect couple besieged by the world around them, rather than their own issues and problems. And the constant inclusion of song lyrics throughout the text was just painful to read. Don't even get me started on the female bashing that was prevalent throughout the entire book.
Another deal-breaker was the denouement. After having spent the first two hundred pages of the book illustrating in excruciating detail how perfectly, psychically, emotionally and mentally attuned Evan and Jesse were, it was just bad writing to have their relationship crisis hang on Evan breaking up with Jesse 'for his own good' and not have Jesse see through it and to have Jesse suddenly paralyzed by doubt with a relationship that was rock solid up until that moment. Frost then proceeds to undermine their break up at every step with the way they can't leave each other alone, continue to declare their feelings about each other and start pining themselves into the grave before a hasty and anticlimactic get-back-together forty pages later.
And then, from a personal standpoint, I don't like insta-romances, where the characters fall in love at first sight and are declaring their love within hours or mere days of first meeting each other. It's a valid story telling archetype and lots of people love it, but I am not one of them. I want chemistry and people WORKING for their relationship and all the realistic hesitancy and miscommunication and dramatic tension that goes along with it. This was not the book for me.
I think I need to do the minority report on this one. This review contains spoilers. I will hide the more important ones.
I found this book to be very frustrating. First of all, there were quite a few editing errors. In two places the author managed to say the opposite of what she meant, and there were many mixed and/or clunky metaphors, and lots of repetitive language. The book was too long and the sex scenes were frequent and repetitive.
Second, it is an insta-everything book (sex/love/commitment). Jesse is a virgin, but they have full anal sex the night they meet, several times. They are in love in days and swearing undying commitment within a few more days.
Then the at the end bothered me on several levels. There was the Harlequin trope of one partner Then there was the extreme cluelessness of Jesse in not figuring out what was going on. Jesse knew the studio wanted them to hide the relationship. Evan was still wearing what amounted to an engagement ring, he wasn't eating or sleeping. He was drinking too much. And it never once occurred to Jesse that maybe Evan was doing it for Jesse's sake. And finally, Evan quit singing because . So him seemed extremely unlikely.
I wanted to like this story more than I did, but there were some elements that just irked me.
Can't hate the characters because Evan and Jesse are so freakin' perfect that one has to root around to find a small flaw which is then blown out of proportion to create conflict within the story. The actual external conflicts are just washed away like writing in sand, completely ignoring them and their potential turmoil.
The chemistry between the men was hot, sweet and idealized. Unfortunately, it was also unrealistic--instantaneous and all-consuming.
Anyway the tension created by waiting for the other shoe to drop is never realized except in the most annoying way possible.
Favorite quote:
"It's not an ego when it's the truth,” Jesse retorted.
I. Loved. This. Book. Even when I wanted to throw my Kindle out the window. lol Jesse and Evan are just...perfection together. It doesn't even feel hokey that they get together so fast, because it just feels...right.
Jesse is an extremely temperamental, but gifted artist, who just can't quite get it right with his band, Conquest. When he finally meets his idol, Evan Arden, things start to fall into place. Yet that is also when all the sparks start to fly in both his personal and professional life.
You will absolutely fall in love with Jesse and Evan, and find yourself rooting for them the whole way. They are too fantastic. So glad this is a series - because you will definitely want more!!
Well I will tell you I really enjoyed this book I laughed, cried and really enjoyed hanging out with them, ok that sounds weird but you know what I mean, LOL When I wasn't reading it I was wondering what everyone in the book was doing. That's one way I know if I love a book if I put it down and I can't stop thinking about the book. I really loved Jesse and Evan and the love that they shared. I really did think it was a beautiful love story about loving the person you love no matter what happens or what people think.
Conquest by S.J. Frost has been suggested to me more than once as a must-read series. I can now see why. I must admit freely that I fell in love with Evan and Jesse within just a few pages. I know that there has been discussion before about Jesse's level of arrogance but to me it really rang true--this is what it takes to make it in any arts medium--a lot of balls and a lot of arrogance. The story is a relatively simple one. Evan a burned out musician who experienced a meteoric rise to fame has been "finding himself" read hiding for 3 years. In the meanwhile young Jesse has been thrown out of his house by his homophobic father and forgone a full ride to Purdue University to pursue his music career. He has the voice of an angel and is somewhat of a musical prodigy on instruments.
Quite by accident these two men meet and Jesse is initially overwhelmed by meeting the stuff his dreams and teenage crush had been made of--Evan! Evan has only had people who fawn over him wither for what he can do for their career or for his money, plus he has carefully hidden the fact that he is gay in order to preserve his music career. Jesse, on the other hand, is brash and outspoken--often to his bandmate Kenny's sorrow, since that outspokenness is usually the cause of them having to find a new drummer and keyboardist.
Evan brings reps from his label to hear this beautiful voice and talented duo and suddenly Jesse's star is on the rise complete with a contract and upcoming tour. While all this is happening, the walls around Evan's heart are crashing down and he lets Jesse in where no man has gone before--the two, despite their disbelief that it could happen so rapidly, fall in love. However, while Evan has made his mar in the business and could care less if fans discover he is gay, Jesse is just starting out and the idea that he is not the stuff that every young girl's heart desires is not a good thing according to the record label executives. So now Evan must give Jesse up in order to make sure Jesse's dream of being a star has ever possibility to survive--but will Jesse himself survive the loss of the love of his life?
I felt the real strength in this novel was the author's attempt to make it as realistic as possible. From the shower water in Jesse's dive of an apartment going hot, then cold, a trickle, then a blast to the frank discussion between he and Evan about the fact that they were falling in love so quickly, every little nuance added to this being more than just a typical "insta-love" romance. The sex scene were edgy and definitely hot but flowed from the story rather than falling into the mistake of a meager plot surrounded by one sex scene after another. The side characters such as Jesse's best friend Kenny, his brother Brandon and the record exec. Greg were not just mere page fillers but also interesting with depth and a decided impact on the story itself.
The two main things that kept this from being a 5 star read for me was the lack of follow through on the secret that Evan carried with him that almost became the reason he would not be able to have a relationship with Jesse and the odd appearance of Evan's mother at the end of the novel. First the deep dark reason Evan refrained from caring too much for anyone was well done but once he confessed it to Jesse it seemed to just disappear. I felt that something so huge in Evan's life would need some sort of further discussion--perhaps even some subsequent action from Evan in order to make amends beyond what he had already done. After all this was a huge deal for nearly half the book and i can hardly believe that once sharing it with Jesse would make all the guilt and sorrow instantly recede. Then there was the sudden appearance of Evan's mother--a mother whom he was estranged from for months and who he truly hated. In fact, she had been painted as both a gold digger who was interested in only Evan's wealth as well as uncaring. So, you see, her sudden appearance at Evan's side the end of the novel just made me scratch my head.
However, this was definitely a really good read--a beautiful romance, and a story that kept me involved from beginning to end. I look forward to reading more in this series!
I hated this.
I also found myself grudgingly fond of it. Occasionally, and very grudgingly. It's the only thing that kept me reading...regretfully.
Honestly, it was the characters that wouldn't let me go. In theory, I could have loved them. In actuality, they were just too sweet for me, and I found their dialogue with each other to be so painfully ridiculous, unrealistic, and I can't even...
I wanted to DNF this so hard. But some insane part of my brain kept whispering: "It might get better. The characters have potential, and it's so sweet you'll love it like you'd love Diabetic neuropathy." You know what? It almost did get better, but then the entire conclusion sent me spinning into a rage so rageful I thought I was in danger of rupturing all the blood vessels in my eyes.
That being said. I know some people will love this completely. It's complete escapist fantasy. Something I do enjoy, just not this time. This was a complete miss for me. I won't be continuing the series... unless that evil voice convinces me to give it another go.
Not rating, because I don't even know where to begin. I narrowed it down to being between 0 and 2 stars, then gave up since I just want to forget this experience.
I loved this book it was a compelling read! The story lives in the world of rock music and the battles that can exist between a personal and a public life. It is a story of love, heartbreak, loss and dreams. The relationship between Jesse and Evan is beautiful and at times heartbreaking.
Decided to reread since this is one of the first MM stories I ever tried. It's got it's cheesy moments, and some martyr crap that I hate. I'm still glad I reread it though. It'll always be special to me.
