Surviving Time #2

The Reigning and the Rule

Rate this book
Étienne Lacroix and I had a fire I thought would never die. Our love was timeless. An irreversible decision sent me back to the present day with a family I barely recognize, but I am determined to find a way back to Étienne. I can survive time. But I can't survive life without him. Time bends to no one's demands, so I must fight with everything I have to return to the past. However, I am terrified that the past I once knew might not look the same, and the man who once called me his surviving trace will no longer be waiting for me. Time bends to no one's demands but sometimes love does . . . Contains mature themes.

"Perhaps the greatest agony you can feel is to watch the love of your life walk this Earth with someone else."

Book two in The Surviving Trace series is complete, and I'm more eager than ever to find out how this portion of Belgrave's story concludes! I'll admit that there were portions of this book that I didn't feel as engaged with (mainly the present day scenes because I just missed Etienne and Serene's chemistry so much), but the writing and atmosphere here are classic Calia in their exquisite nature.

Every time I pick up a book in this world, I long to exist in early 1900's Charleston and experience a simpler, less hurried form of life, if even for a short time. Most times that I've experienced a time traveling novel, the transitions feel clunky and forced, but not so here; Serene's dipping in and out of time almost have an excruciating, dreamlike quality to them, and the amount of emotion invested by the characters and the reader is almost debilitating. I love how we finally get a grip on how some of the time traveling works, and how some of our questions are answered from the first book in this sequel, but holy cow that ending!

I'm grateful to have had a buddy reading partner through these books, because it's definitely the type of series that you desperately need to discuss with someone for the full effect. I'm going to include a few more favorite quotes below, and truly am excited to read the conclusion to Serene and Etienne's timeless love story in April.

"I can't think of a single soul on this Earth who doesn't long to feel wanted. It's a tangible feeling that can fill us with a sense of importance. Reminds us we're needed. When that pleasure is taken away, it feels as if the rug has been pulled out from beneath you."

"Cry for what you lost. Cry for what you miss. Cry for the ache in your chest. And then wipe the tears because tomorrow is a brand new day and a whole new beginning."

"Love is not linear. What works for one person is not the case for another. That is all right. It has taken me several tries and shedding many tears to come to that conclusion."

➽ KITTY KATS CRAZY ABOUT BOOKS

I'm a chameleon, living two lives. One in the present day, and the other in the past.

'THE REIGNING AND THE RULE' is the second book in Calia Read's 'Surviving Time' Trilogy. It picks up where the first book left off. Spoken in 'Dual Perspectives'

This review is going to be as spoiler free as I can possibly make it..

Holy Shit!! So I might of inhaled this, this was one of my most highly anticipated books so I pulled a late one and didn't put it down until that very last page was glaring at me in the face. God this book did a number on me. I look and feel like I've been pulled through a hedge backwards no adulting to be had by me today!!

This threw out ALL THE FEELS, so much angst, the swooning for me was tenfold compared to the first book, the heartbreak, the betrayal, I completely fell under this authors spell, and didn't want it to end..Were introduced to new characters which bring even more drama, and up against it all is a race against time.

Serene stole the show with her spitfire attitude, her sailor mouth, and her undeniable love for Etienne is just the icing on the cake. These two are my most favourite characters to ever be created, I fell in love with them in the first book but this book right here tipped me over the edge, I couldn't get enough of them. Bring on the next book!! I am ready!!

My soul mate was someone I was bound to never be with. Someone who time continuously dangled in front of me like forbidden fruit. I would reach for her over and over. Right when I thought I had her in my grasp, she was yanked away.

'THE REIGNING AND THE RULE' is without a doubt unputdownable (I am a testament to that) and unpredictable in every sense. This is not just your ordinary romance. It's highly addictive and insanely consuming in every way. LOve LOve LOved it!!

Following the cliffhanger from the last book I thought it couldn't get any worse but here we are and I'm emotional once again...

This book was full of so much heartache, pain and conflicting emotions. I felt so connected to both Serene and Ètienne as they struggled to find a way to be together. Time had been changed following a decision that Serene made and she had to adjust to the consequences of this. Honestly it was so emotional and I really felt like I was experiencing everything with Serene, all the fear and uncertainty, honestly I don't know how she kept it together because I was losing it...

There was also the added mystery surrounding the character Emmeline and I loved how well this part of the story was written. I was so intrigued and right to the end I was still trying to figure out things. I really enjoy the mystery and historical aspect of this series. I loved the scenes where Serene is looking through old documents and tries to piece fragments of the past together - the way it is written is so engaging and addictive. Every scene with Serene and Ètienne was just so electric and their chemistry/connection was so great even when they were apart.
There were a couple of times I was a little bit annoyed at certain things, mostly to do with Ètienne, but I can slightly understand and sympathise with the decisions he made.

I was constantly worried throughout reading this as I really could not predict what was going to happen next - the romance and tension were so good!
I'm kinda scared to read the third book but I need ANSWERS!

Genre: Time Travel Romance
Type: Book 2 of 3 from Surviving Time series
POV: First Person - Multiple
Rating:
(3.75 stars)

Étienne Lacroix and Serene Parow’s love for each other transcended time. When a ripple in history ripped her back to the present that she did not recognize, she needed to find her way back to him. But going back also meant risking their past and her future. She must decide if it’s worth meddling with the fragile thread of time.

My love is giving yet selfish. And selfishly, I want him to only be with me for the rest of his life.

I loved Serene in book 1 because of her spunk and strength. She still retained those qualities and it was amusing seeing her interacted with people from the past. However there was a certain part of the story that I was not happy with her actions and self-righteousness.

“It shot me to pieces to have you out of my life for so long. To be honest, I’m still not over it. And I can’t help myself from thinkin’, ‘If I’m still lickin’ my wounds from the recent separation, how can I prepare myself for you to leave again?’”

I’ve always love Étienne’s broody persona and how he was very supportive and selfless when it came to his loved ones. But I wanted more of his presence in this one and Serene eclipsed him in a lot of ways.

I like how the book ended because of the potential direction for the final book. Unfortunately, the events leading up to the ending felt repetitive and drawn out. It lacked intrigue and unpredictability that were well played in the previous book.

The Reigning and the Rule is the second book of the three parts Surviving Time series. I’m curious to see how the series will wrap up in the final book.

Original review November 24, 2018

Loved it! This series is amazing! It has it all; intrigue, romance, sensuality, suspense and a love that is so powerful it defies time. What else can you ask for? This series is going straight to my favorites of 2018. Can’t wait for the next one in this trilogy.

"Our love is timeless."

When I say that I have been lucky enough to read these stories beside Calia, I mean it. Being next to her every step of the way has been so much fun. Not to mention, this world that she has created has enchanted me in the best possible way. Which brings me to my most important point of this entire review: The more time I spent working on this, the more I realized what garbage said review is because no words I ever typed could put into words how strategically beautiful and genius this series is.

I can start out by saying that if you wanted more angst in The Surviving Trace, Calia has delivered just that to you. On a silver platter even! Every single page you turn will have you wanting to either: cry, scream, beg, shake a character, or my favorite option, ALL OF THE ABOVE. It was the whole package.

"I will give you everything you want. Everything you need. Just scream and let the world know you are mine."

But most importantly, Serene stole the show for me this go around though. Her spunk, fire, and fight had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The way she adapted to her surroundings and the things happening to her had me cheering her on the entire time. The personality she embodied in TRatR captivated me more than I thought was even possible.

I really loved how Calia weaved in all of these fun little extras, especially with her side characters. Usually when authors do this, they intend to give us more books about said characters. If you think I would be mad about going back to Belgrave again and again, you are wrong. I would love nothing more than to experience that place through the lives of some of the others. Hint...hint...

This story. These characters. Calia. Belgrave. All of these hold such a special place in my heart and I know they will stay there forever. I hope you give this story a chance. I hope you read it and fall in love every time you turn the page just like I did.

"My heart will always belong to Etienne Lacroix no matter what happens, or what he does and that's the truth."

"Don’t you ever forget you love me.”

WAW! Just waw!!!

I NEED THE THIRD BOOK IMMEDIATELY! That’s not fair!!! I mean how am I supposed to live my life after that cliffhanger?
I need more!!!! This is a series that must be read!!!

I have a lot of explaining to do, but the story of serene and me is not one that you can place commas, periods, and quotation on and say “the end.” Because if our love extends past the boundaries of times, then it certainly extends past words.

After the first book cliffhanger, it’s pretty clear that Serene has messed up with time. As a result of what she has done, everything in her life changes. Serene need to find a way to fix things and to find her way back to Étienne.

See me now. Feel me now. I reign over your world, my actions scream

What to expect from this book...
-To be pulled back to the past.
-To be completely captivated.
-More Secrets to be discovered.
-Mysteries to be solved.
-Time to fight.
-A lot of angst and steam.
-Serene being “more Serene” than usual, uncontrollable, untamable, and with a more interesting tongue.
-Calia Read flawless and brilliant writing.
-A cliffhanger that would completely mess up with your mind. Like....what? When? How? And holy crap! what the hell is gonna happen now!!
Thank god the third book is coming in May!!

Oh the wait! I hate to wait but I know it will be worth it. I’m positive. Holy hell the last 20% was awesome. So many twists and turns. This is why I love time travel because your actions has consequences and Serene and Étienne knows that. Still they change the timeline because of their everlasting love. They’ll do anything for one another and for family.
I’m crazy about these characters. Not only Serene and Étienne but also Nat, Livingston and Asa. There’s still so much story to be told and with how TRaTR ended the possibilities are endless. I enjoy the historical aspect of the story too and the author captures the atmosphere beautifully.
Whenever I thought I’d figured the timeline and the characters out I was sucker punched. Nothing or anyone is safe and I like that. TRaTR was such an entertaining book and I’m on pins and needles for book 3. I NEED IT.

What did I just read???? OMFG I think Calia is trying to kill me. She seems sweet in her photos but don't let that fool you - she's the devil I swear!!!

This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2018. After devouring The Surviving Trace I was so excited to reunite with my favourite characters. What a ride!!

“Don’t you ever forget you love me.”

I was swearing, I was swooning, I was squirming and I was crying!!! This one gave me everything I love in an angsty romance read. My feelings were all over the place and I might have sent a few ranty messages to Calia. She totally deserved them.

If you've read The Surviving Trace you NEED to read this one, If you haven't read it there's still time to join the Belgrave cult and grow to love these characters like I do.

2018 Favourite For Sure!!!

"I'm no match for time. Every time I think I have you within my reach, you are ripped away."

DISCLAIMER: I might die and I told my husband my ashes are to be shipped to Belgrave to be buried there. <--- TRUTH.

This book, no...this trilogy is why I read. The very reason why I pick up books and read them. The heaviness, the journey, the love - it's all there, expertly told in a way that deemed me powerless to walk away from the inevitable heartbreak I was sure to feel as I had to leave them once again. But, if you want the truth: I was immediately sucked back into this story, even after being away for 5 months, but I cannot stress enough: YOU ARE NOT READY FOR THIS ONE!!! OMGosh, I'm struggling to come to terms with everything I just read, and I am in desperate need for the rest of their story!!! SO MUCH HAPPENED. Like, take notes. Ok? I don't even know what to tell you. But this story, OMGosh, yes. Aaaaah!! You see? I'm rendered speechless...or a bumbling idiot that can't string words together. I sound like a loon trying to give you my feelings on this one. Oh man, I am so glad I took a chance on this trilogy, and I am begging YOU to! After reading this, I wanted to cry but celebrate, rant but swoon - I felt so much, but pain is the evident one. My heart literally hurts. How am I supposed to go on....?

WILLINGLY!!!! I seriously willingly gave my heart and soul to Calia Read again. AGAIN. OMGosh, seriously. Seeeriously. I don't even know where to start with this one because this book arrested me. It completely captivated me and I am scrambling to come to terms with what I just read, what she did to my heart, and what I'm going to do while waiting for the final chapter in this amazing trilogy. If I could sit you down on the couch next to me and try to explain to you how this book affected me, you would get a lot of hand gestures, and heart clutches and hair pulling. I cannot even begin to tell you how much I loved this one. I needed this one something fierce, and being able to once again pace myself while reading it just so I can feel the depth of it, relish in her words, frolic in her fictional world of time traveling back to her soul's keeper..... sigh So. Damn. Good.

"Time has made us its playthings, and there is no way to escape its clutches."

The angst in this one was a different kind of angst than the first one, for ME. I loved this one, but the angst was suspense based and therefore was a different nail-biting kind of feeling. It was an intensity that allowed me to read slowly, allowing me to savor it, but I was able to think about it while holding off on finishing it. Yes, I held off on finishing this one for days, just like I did with the first - which kind of prolongs me staying in their world, right? Well, that's my thought process at least. Not only do I hate leaving them, but knowing I don't get to read their conclusion for several months terrifies me. I love this couple so much. I was left in a good spot with their story, but more questions are here and I am even more confused, yet again. I want to know who, what, how, whyyy?! I need to know!!! I am going to miss you, Étienne and Serene!!! *insert heart break*

Hands down, Favorites List 2018 material right here. My heart bled for Serene. It broke for Étienne. It is screaming at me right now......well, at Calia Read too, but at me for reading this book now knowing I have to wait for the final book. And I know saying that probably scares a few readers off from picking it up, but I will tell you this: I would rather know this beauty and love and cherish it and think about it and revel in it for the next few months than not know it at all. Weird coming from me, I am aware, but when I read a story and I still remember it, still feel it intimately months later, I know for a fact that this story and this couple will never leave me. I am so very in love with Serene and Étienne and I am excited to read their final book, but I think I will hold on a little longer by not finishing it right away - my way of refusing to let go, to saying goodbye to them. This series is on my "IF I Ever ReRead a Book" list. I don't ever recall having felt this strangling hold on my heart and my senses from a book before. I am....heartbroken. I need more. Anything. Something. Do you hear me, Calia Read???

"It's much like love. If it is pure and honest, it will find a way to survive no matter how impossible the circumstances are.

So, I managed to reach the last page... To be honest, I didn’t expect it. There were so many times I just wanted to quit reading. I felt very frustrated with Serene’s attitude.
In the first book Serene made such a fuss with Will to the point she broke up with him because he called her brothers after her confession of time travelled. He was very worried and didn’t know how to handle a situation like that.
In the second book she still has this childish behaviour, and cruel towards Etienne, when she finds out that he is engaged after two whole years where she hasn’t appeared in his world at all! And she claims that he has deeply hurt her with his actions!!!! Unbelievable!!!
Moreover all these names from the circumstantial family trees were so confusing and faded my interest. There’re still remained unanswered questions and unexplained circumstances and regarding the epilogue, I found it rushed and abrupt.

Continuing in the timeline, Serene Parow is thrust forward into the present only to be separated from Étienne Lacroix once again. While she is trying to decipher how to return to the love of her life, she discovers a mystery pertaining to her own family. Searching for answers takes Serene back into the past where the love she shares with Étienne is tested.

”I didn’t plan to fall in love with you,” he says gruffly as if the words have been pulled from his throat. “I didn’t plan for you to ravage every aspect of my life the way you did.”

Told mostly in dual POV, the shifting perspectives underscore the experiences of Serene and Étienne. Though Serene travels to the present, time seems to stretch in the past leaving Étienne with much more time to mourn her absence. Without a logical explanation for how the space-time continuum works, they both yearn for the next snap where they’ll be together.

”Time won’t let me stay here, remember?” I whisper.

True to his character, Étienne remains untamed, direct and downright sexy. Though he is logical in most his decisions, when it comes to Serene, he’s willing to take a risk. While I found Serene entertaining and dynamic in the first book, her actions in this volume definitely tried my patience. The chemistry between Étienne and Serene is palpable and I wanted a bit more of them together. Getting to the end felt like a bit of a chase and it lost its edge for me. However, I continue to be intrigued with this unique storyline and look forward to reading how it all ends in the final book.

The Reigning and the Rule is a romance about how love can be timeless with suspenseful elements weaved into a complex plot.

I need to see this on my tv screen!

This series has me all tied up in delicious knots and I love it!

“How ironic and twisted that I’m in the time I was born in, the time I should be in, yet I know with every fiber of my being I don’t belong here.”

I can’t tell you the times I’ve felt like this. Gives me chills to read this quote.

Calla Read is AMAZING!! Her talent in writing this story is unreal, and I will forever be hooked on her words.

“Existing in pain simply makes it impossible for the wound to close.”

Serene & Etienne are my complete undoing. The twists and turns in this book is unfathomable. Wow..just, wow!

Aside from the crazy good story line, I love the author’s accuracy on life in the south. It’s been an odd comfort reading and seeing “The Ashley River” or this quote that is so spot on about southern women in particular:

“I’ve learned that in the South, it’s very easy to mix up a compliment with an insult. Especially with women. With their soft drawls and slow smiles, they kill you with kindness. It’s only when you’re bleeding out that you realize what has happened.”

NO TRUER WORDS HAVE BEEN SPOKEN!

Onto book 3!!!

And here I abandon this book.

The first book was so awesome. And I was so excited to read the sequel (this book).
But I’m DISAPPOINTED.
Highly.

First of all catching up with the book was so confusing. There are so many characters. I almost forgot the first book. But I did catch up.

I’m done.

The book is already boring me. It’s tooooo long.
And I hate the hero.
Sorry I don’t read books to read about the ‘pinning for heroine but as she is not available I’ll make do with another woman’
And here the heroine is madly searching for ways to get back to him.

I give up this series.
Thank you.

4 STARS

The Reigning and The Rule, the second instalment in the amazing Surviving Time series by Calia Read, was one of my most anticipated release of 2018. In my opinion, this series has everything to appeal to contemporary romance readers and historical romance readers alike.

It has angst, passion, intrigue, and undeniable sexual tension. While the first instalment focused mostly on our two main characters, Serene and Etienne, this one focuses as much on those two as it does on Emmeline, a character briefly introduced in The Surviving Trace but whose story greatly impacts the lives of both our MCs.

TRaTR takes off more or less exactly after the end of TST so, of course, these are not standalones and you absolutely have to read them in order.

Overall, this was a very enjoyable read. There's no denying there's this kind of energy and passionate fire to Serene and Etienne that is so utterly fascinating to read about.

Calia Read is great at creating palpable and exciting tension between her characters. It feels as though you're standing right there in the room with them and if only you reached out, you could feel the fire burning between them.

I love how this whole concept of time-travelling makes it so there's always this sense of urgency hovering over the characters' heads, having you sitting on the edge of your seat because you know things are coming but you can't tell when they'll happen.

If you love angsty back-and-forth and relationships that are along the lines of I-hate-you-yet-I-love-you and nobody-gets-on-my-last-nerve-like-you-do, then I think you will for sure adore this duo the way I do.

Nat and Livingston were also delightful to be around in this one, as per usual. I feel there's a lot in store for those two and I cannot wait to see where time will take them next.

I'm not someone who hands out 5 stars easily, those are reserved to the books that make me feel emotions to my very core and make me forget the world exist and that so do I. Therefore, I feel I can't review this book and not explain why The Surviving Trace was a five star read for me (and now one of my all times favorite books) yet TRaTR only gets a four star rating from me. The reason behind that is quite simple, the beginning of this one was too slow for me.

I've never been a massive fan of long chapters and this book unfortunately has plenty of them. The length of them didn't bother me once the story really kicked off, but the first few chapters before then really put a damper on my excitement. There was a lot of information thrown at us, some of which was a bit confusing, making the reading experience (for me at least) a bit dry. With that being said, it didn't last long, only a handful of chapters and once the story really started, in true Calia Read fashion, it was nothing short of the addictive goodness I expected of this book.

I believe there's only one more book left after this one for Serene and Etienne and with how things ended in TRaTR, I'm definitely sitting on the edge of my seat, dying to know how things will wrap up in this crazy whirlwind of passion and love that defies time!

"I would always love Serene. She would possess my soul in a way no other woman could, but maybe it was time to accept that I could never have a life with her."

Serene and Etienne are two of my favorite star-crossed lovers. And the tension. The angst. The impossible things they must overcome to be together (um, like time) makes my heart ache for them.

The Reigning and the Rule had a slow start, but once it took off, I couldn't put it down. I seriously can't wait to see how this series ends. Look out Echoes of Time, I'm coming for ya.

The Surviving Time series is perfect for fans of:

❤️ Historical romance
🌟 Star-crossed lovers

I can not recommend this trilogy enough and I haven’t even read the third one yet. The beauty in these books, in these words astounds me every time. It’s captivating, immersive, gut wrenching and will leave you in sweet agony.

Calia Reed is such an incredible author. She makes you feel what the characters feel. The angst, the swooning, the anger, heartbreak, betrayal, and so on. The entirety of the book made me emotional and I feel emotional just thinking about it. Just, wow. Five beautiful damn stars.

I’m not fine, I’m not okay, these books....my poor heart.

I'm keeping my review short for this book. I loved it. I loved the angst, the push and pull. Loved how fierce Serene was, and how she wasn't afraid to say what was on her mind. Loved how loving, despite me wanting to strangle, Etienne was toward Serene. I loved how we got to see a lot more of the side characters, as well as got to know new ones. AND LASTLY, I LOVED HOW THIS BOOK ENDED. I can't wait to see how book three will play out.

Wowza! I'm still utterly under the spell of this series. The Reigning and the Rule is still good. Definitely NOT better than book 1 but almost just as good.....and that cliffhanger?!

This book, this series, and this author is nothing more than magnificent. Each word she writes is phenomenal to say the least. Calia Read has become my top favorite author of the 21st century. She has away to write words and bring you to tears with every book she writes. A lot of her novel's are so relatable that you feel what the characters feel.

Didn't like it as much as the first book, The Surviving Trace, but I sure did enjoy it. There are a lot of inconsistencies and loose details with the aspect of the time travelling itself and that's my main problem. But regardless of that, I truly enjoyed the interactions between the characters, though sometimes it was kind of frustrating to read the push and pull relationship between Etienne and Serene. How much time they wasted instead of seizing every bit of their borrowed time. But I loved how passionate and sincere their feelings are with each other and I can't wait to read where their journey through time would lead them, especially now that Etienne really went a long way to meet Serene.
