Charlotte Darling is an unaccomplished, talentless girl of meager prospects with a shrewish temperament that will make it almost impossible for her to marry. Such is the opinion of Mr. Blakeney, the heir apparent of Charlotte’s childhood home. The estate of Blithewell, upon her father’s death, will pass to Mr. Darling’s nephew by his first marriage—a “cousin” of sorts. It is Mr. Blakeney’s intention to see that Charlotte is married and off his hands at the earliest possible convenience. Charlotte has other ideas. Love is not among them, but when Mr. Blakeney's half-brother arrives, she is forced to reconsider everything she previously considered non-negotiable, including leaving her beloved Blithewell.
V.R. Christensen writes classically inspired romantic historical fiction and steampunk dystopian novels of depth and sensitivity. V.R.’s historical romances have been multiple-time bestsellers and have been compared to Jane Austen and Charles Dickens (a literary lovechild, perhaps?) V.R. is half English and resides in the United States, though she spends a majority of her time immersed in late-Victorian classic literature and costume dramas. Her work has been described as “masterful for its genre” and “gorgeous”—“like a river flowing through a beautiful landscape that is sometimes light, sometimes dark and threatening.”
Charlotte and her father have always enjoyed each other's company, becoming their own society within the grounds and walls of their beloved home. When Charlotte starts noticing her father's look of tiredness, she begins looking for ways to make him more healthy, diet, rest, exercise... But nothing can prepare her for the jarring news that her father's successor will be coming to stay, to learn the management of the estate. She questions the reason this semi-stranger, the nephew of her father's first wife, is coking now. It seems shell be the last to know the reason. A well written novel with strong, sometimes offensive characters and those of kind hearts and minds. A worthwhile read, though misunderstandings are possibly overused. Sound plot and three great primary characters and a decidedly obnoxious heir!
As I read the beginning chapters, I wondered if I could like the main characters and therefore, the book. But as other, better characters were introduced, it claimed my interest and I couldn't put it down. Several unforeseen twists along the way kept my interest until the end. Sweet, clean story.
Again a sweet romance that eventually ends with a hea. I still fell I personally felt There is a tad too much talk within the their heads and so the story did drag in spots.
An interesting read with a unique approach in both the writing and the story. The POV kept changing and sometimes it was written like I assume a screenplay would be, but overall I enjoyed it.
