Mary Berry is an English food writer and television presenter. After being encouraged in domestic science classes at school, she went to college to study catering. She then moved to France at the age of 21 to study at Le Cordon Bleu school, before working in a number of cooking-related jobs.
She has published more than seventy cookery books (her first being The Hamlyn All Colour Cookbook in 1970) and hosted several television series for the BBC and Thames Television. Berry is an occasional contributor to Woman's Hour and Saturday Kitchen. She has been a judge on the BBC One (originally BBC Two) television programme The Great British Bake Off since its launch in 2010.
Un sacco di ricette! Ben scritte, e descritte.
I bet even Britain's 'Mary, Queen of Cakes' will be surprised to learn she's become the star attraction of Jewish social media threads during the current 2019 Passover week.
This time, though,it's not because of a no-fail cake recipe, but because of a non-dairy vegetable lasagne that is suitable year-round for a kosher diet and that I altered to make it appropriate for the traditional 'seder' dinner by substituting pasta strips with matza sheets. I softened these slightly without soaking them by passing them through running cold tap water before placing them on the dish.
Any readers here interested in having a go, either with pasta or matza. wil find the original recipe in the vegetarian section of this whopping cookey encyclopedia - always a pleasure to use.
An excellent cookbook - quite classic but that's Mary Berry for you. A much beloved book in our household - the baking for me, the main dishes for my mother and the vegetarian section for my sister. There really is something for everyone in here. Earlier versions contained recipes using endangered fish, but thankfully they do not exist in my copy. My one criticism is that some of the recipes, especially baking ones, do not have photographs so relying on the description alone to create a shape, for example, can be slightly annoying.
Wow what a brilliant book!! I was bought this for christmas and although it's an old book, 2012 I think, it is just amazing.
It's a huge heavy book with tons of recipes divided into sections, and each of the sections has small photos for each of the recipes and that's before you actually get to the first recipe page of that section, then you get the bigger photos. There are just so many I want to cook, this is really a cook's bible. I think all those colour photos made it for me as well, nearly one for every recipe now that's a lot!
This will be replacing Mrs Beeton's cookbook for many home cooks, it has almost everything Mrs Beeton had in her book, which is still on my shelf, bit battered but it is incredibly old, was my mum's copy, also a lot of old greasy marks on the pages, bit offputting that really. And a lot of offal recipes though I doubt many will want to cook pigs brains today.
Excellent book and if there are parents out there who have students going on to university then this is the sum total of all those books you bought from waterstones but with a lot more in it!!
Hang on my copy is pink with two spoons on the front cover and a young looking Mary Berry with her hands in a flan. Same book though, mine must be the re-released version?
With over 650 recipes, this is the biggest ever cookbook from Britain's best-loved cookery writer that no kitchen should be without. This updated edition of Mary's million-selling cookbook is the only Mary Berry book that you need. Every delicious recipe is accompanied by beautiful photography to inspire your cooking, with an eclectic mix of traditional dishes, exotic flavours, and classic Mary Berry recipes. Learn to make every type of dish, including soups, poultry, game, pies, desserts, cakes, and vegetarian favourites. Every enticing chapter starts with a know-how section to get you ready to cook and shows you Mary's trusted tips and tricks. These tried and tested Mary Berry recipes include mouth-watering meals for family and friends no matter the occasion, including hummus, salmon roulade, prawn tacos, chicken pot pie, English roast beef, moussaka, dairy-free lasagne, croissants, key lime pie, and ginger snaps!
Extremely detailed recipes, plus photography that shows good examples of results make this a must-have book for both serious and amateur cooks who want a comprehensive cookbook from literally soup to dessert with chapters that include vegetables, rice, and an assortment of appetizers. Each section also contains excellent hints and step-by-step instructions on food preparation like how to debone or make pie crust over all the topics. The ebook version was easy to peruse and the color photography clear and informational. For readers who want instruction, reassurance, and basics to challenging recipes. I think that the baking portions of this cookbook duplicate many of Berry's specific baking cookbooks. For fans of Baking School from the King Arthur Baking School, Melissa Clark’s Dinner in One, and stalwarts like Betty Crocker.
What an extensive list of recipes; you can choose basic to gourmand depending on your skill level, and you can find something that you, your family, and friends will enjoy! I plan on making the Salmon Encroute and Mary's Fishcakes for Christmas, they look scrumptious! I am deciding which desserts to make for Christmas, they all look good. I highly recommend this cookbook! Thank you. carolintallahassee
10/10. Picked this up at the library but am considering buying my own copy. I’m a super fan of Great British Baking Show. The 2024 American edition of this book is absolutely fantastic. The photography is spectacular. Recipes for all levels of cooking. Anyone who likes to cook, wants to like to cook, or likes to eat would love this book.
What's not to like about this? It's Mary Berry and there are so many recipes it's hard to know where to start. There were more offal recipes than I really needed, but plenty of other mouth-watering ideas.
Excellent to start cooking with vegan food, to share meals with non vegan people. I cooked a lot of pastries, savory pastries. I started using it in 1996, then I bought it in 2004
A master work from everyone's favorite baker. She has included a wide variety of recipes surrounded by beautiful photography and best of all, each chapter contains mini pictures of each recipe, a sort of visual table of contents! Worth the read, but be prepared to spend a lot of time with this book to soak up the joy from all 650 recipes!

I use this book almost everyday! Well, maybe every week, lol. It is definitely one of my favorites. The recipes featured are simple and delicious, and they offer such a wonderful variety!
Lovely book. Lovely photographs. Lovely food. This book has been my kitchen guide for many years now. I can't imagine life without it. Highly recommended.
