The Million Dollar Catch #2

The Unexpected Millionaire

Rate this book
Millionaire Kane Dennison's first mistake had been carrying an injured Willow Nelson inside his home, which, as a rule, was off-limits. Of course, she'd needed his help, but his one kind gesture had her believing he was a nice man. He wasn't.

His second mistake had been surrendering to passion after warning Willow to run away. Because a woman like her deserved better than a one-night stand. She believed in soul mates. He trusted no one—needed no one. And not even Willow was going to change him!

#1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Mallery writes heartwarming and humorous novels about the relationships that define women's lives—family, friendship, romance. She's best known for putting nuanced characters into emotionally complex, real-life situations with twists that surprise readers to laughter. Because Susan is passionate about animal welfare, pets play a big role in her books. Beloved by millions of readers worldwide, her books have been translated into 28 languages.

Critics have dubbed Mallery "the new queen of romantic fiction." (Walmart) Booklist says, "Romance novels don't get much better than Mallery's expert blend of emotional nuance, humor, and superb storytelling," and RT Book Reviews puts her "in a class by herself!" It's no wonder that her books have spent more than 200 weeks on the USA Today bestsellers list.

Although Susan majored in Accounting, she never worked as an accountant because she was published straight out of college with two books the same month. Sixteen prolific years and seventy-four books later, she hit the New York Times bestsellers list for the first time with Accidentally Yours in 2008. She made many appearances in the Top 10 before (finally) hitting #1 in 2015 with Thrill Me, the twentieth book in her most popular series, the Fool's Gold romances, and the fourth of five books released that year.

Susan lives in Washington state with her husband, two ragdoll cats, and a small poodle with delusions of grandeur. Her heart for animals has led Susan to become an active supporter of the Seattle Humane Society. Visit Susan online at www.SusanMallery.com.

Loved the story, wasn't a fan of the narrator. For the life of me I don't understand why the same narrator wasn't used in all 3 books in this series, since the characters from the first book have a heavy presence in this book and no doubt in the third one, which has a different narrator too! I want my characters to stay true to form and with the constant changing of voices, that's not happening.

I enjoyed Willow and Kane, she was quirky and fun, he was private and withdrawn. Willow just being Willow talked herself right into Kane's life. It was pretty funny and awfully cute! Not much drama, a sweet ending, and nice lead in to the next book!

Kane and Willow. This was sweetly simple, humorous read. Kane's very unemotional and contained because of how he grew up etc, but Willow gradually works her way into his heart. Kane is head of security for Todd the billionaire, but he himself is a millionaire. He happens to answer the door when Willow shows up to give Todd a piece of her mind for how he treated her sister in the previous book. Kane finds that corralling and controlling Willow's behavior is easier said than done. She's sweet and kind but wiley too in an offhand almost silly way. Kane has strict rules to keep people at bay and a long term goal to become a wealthy hermit. Willow manages to ruin all his plans bit by bit. There's entertaining side characters, her jerk off father, and her loser ex-boyfriend. But in the end it's just Willow and Kane and how they are better people together than apart. Kane who keeps his cool until he realizes what a fool he's being, then a wonderful grovel/declaration when he gives her his heart. There's also this fantastic set down he gives her father. I had to rewind and listen to it a couple times, it was so delicious! The story is short and more like a 3 star story, but I gave an extra star for the sweet HEA. (OW free)
I listened to this as an audiobook and the reader was good.

p.s. I've gone back and enjoyed this one again so gave it another star ; )

Short and sweet, with a satisfying happily ever after.

Bubbly Willow meets security expert Kane when she storms her way into his boss's estate, determined to give him a piece of her mind for a slight he'd delivered to her sister. Instead of achieving her goal, she ends up injured and rescued by Kane, along with a cat and her newborn kittens.

Kane, stoic and happy in his solitude, finds his home invaded by a woman he's finding hard to resist, who openly admits that she is attracted to him.

Despite his resistance, it's not long before the two are dating and feelings develop, but .

An enjoyable story that sets up the story for Marina and Todd, the couple of the last book of the series, The Ultimate Millionaire.

Copied from Karla's review: "For the life of me I don't understand why the same narrator wasn't used in all 3 books in this series, since the characters from the first book have a heavy presence in this book and no doubt in the third one, which has a different narrator too! I want my characters to stay true to form and with the constant changing of voices, that's not happening."

Amen!! WHY do publishers do this to us?? It ruins the series cohesion.

************

Content: A few explicit sex scenes. No violence. Minimal or no swearing. No children. No evangelizing. Cute animals.

This is my first Mallery. Is this her typical style? If so, I won't jump on the Mallery fan bus, but I may try another one some day, for a sweet and short read. No plot, other than the developing relationship. Nothing to hold my interest except wondering how much Kane was gonna hurt Willow -- how badly her heart would break -- and what the HEA would look like. No suspense. No problem to solve. No rising action and gathering climax (except of the sexual sort).

But it was sweet, and sometimes funny, and I liked the kittens. And the sisters. Not the parents so much. Glad Kane told off Willow's effin' father. Good scene.

Part of my problem with the book is the narrator. Carr's rendition detracted from the story. Kane's voice never showed emotion, and Willow sounded like a ditzy airhead.

Of course, she WAS a ditz. You'd have to be TSTL to tangle with a stranger holding a gun on you. No matter how "safe" this gun-toting, good looking stranger made you feel. And WHY would you feel safe??

IMO, the sex came on MUCH too fast. Mallery didn't allow the sexual anticipation, frustration, and wanting to build, so I felt minimal sizzle.

I got tired of hearing about how Kane's girlfriend betrayed him so long ago. Did the author think we would forget such a shocker? I only needed to be told once.

Still, it was sweet, smexy, and entertaining enough for $3.95. I got my money's worth. May try Mallery again.

Me encantó
No tengo otra palabra, simplemente me encantó, de verdad no creí que me llegara a gustar tanto.

The opening scene of this story was so stupid that i almost stopped right then! I am usually the one to tell people to "relax and lighten up that these books are to entertain us not get us into the mensa society!" But this opening had me cinging from the stupidity of the character! However because I ,like to torture myself as of late I continued. Thankfully it turned out to be a very likable set of leads. WILLOW & CANE were sweet together. This is a trio of books working with 3 sisters each getting their own chance for HEA. This is the 2nd book of trio. WILLOW is the one sister not gifted with incredible intelligence. One is a linguist and fabulous international attorney the other is brilliant scientist who started college at 15! WIL!OW draws a cartoin strip about vegetables for a living which turns out no one thinks is even funny so she loses her job.
This is a super fast read that was fun and sweet.

I thoroughly enjoyed this short book narrated by Catherine Carr. Carr's reading was excellent, and the story mostly light and humorous. This is the second of a series by Susan Mallery, following The Substitute Millionaire. The Substitute Millionaire was fun, but this book was funnier and had fewer irritating side-characters. I loved when Kane puts Willow's father in his place. Spiteful of me, but there it is. This series is available on audible.com at this time for under $4 each. Definitely worth it for 4 or 5 hours of entertainment.

Note on author mistake in Chapter 11: All calico cats are female, so the gray and white kitten with the orange paws isn't a "he." (Okay, so technically there is something like a 1:3000 chance for a tri-color cat to be male. You gotta love genetics!)

5 Sweet Stars

I loved this story!!

I loved Willow and Kane! Willow is quirky, sweet, and fun, Kane is private, unfriendly, and withdrawn. Willow just being Willow hysterically talked herself right into Kane's rigid strict life just by being Willow. It was a pretty fun and so sweetly cute! Drama free with a sweet ending. My favorite of the series!

I can't say enough how much I loved this book! Sweet romance, wonderful characters and laugh-out-loud-moments. I enjoyed every moment of this enchanting love story.

P.S. It's part of a series, but you can read it stand alone.

Better than the first one. It was totally melodramatic with all the ex Special Ops/Mercenary/gang member stuff with Kane, but it was still enjoyable.

I almost DNF this one. Did put it down, read a few other books, then came back to this. The first scene Willow is a COMPLETE AND UTTER IDIOT. She is going to the house of a millionaire to yell at him and is met at the door by an armed security guard. She then ducks under his arm and runs through the house, just sort of hoping he doesn't shoot her (!?!?!?).

Took me a few tries to get past that scene. And then the next scene, her topic changing rambles made me wonder if she actually had something wrong with her. But no, Mallery just decided that Utter Ditz was the way to go with this character.

But it worked. I mean, Willow was pushy and clingy and all the things you'd think would be bad, but it worked in this story.

I do have to complain about one scene where he was about to pull his gun and shoot at a moving vehicle because of a traffic accident as if this is perfectly normal and legal.

Also had to complain about how all the romantic partners in Willow's life before this apparently slept with her out of "pity". Like, they didn't actually want to have sex with her, just felt bad for her. Right. Not believing that one at all.

I did enjoy the scene where Kane tells Jack (Willow's father) off. He's a very unlikable character and in the first book I kept wondering why so many people seemed ok with his behavior. We're getting more into his story. Though it was frustrating to hear that Willow's mother knows her husband is bad to Willow (in addition to whatever his constant disappearances did to her other daughters) but allows it to continue because she (mom) finds him hot. So neither one is parent of the year. It explains why Willow is such a wreck.

So bad parents, silly and pushy female lead, over the top Bad Guy With a Soft Side male lead - but somehow, it worked. I didn't even skim!

And the sex was good :D

Argumento:

¡y no necesitaba a nadie! Y ni siquiera ella podría cambiarlo.

I love the characters in this book. The story was fun and Willow, the main woman character, was hilarious. I really liked Kane's strength and his protection for Willow and that he was man enough to finally admit he was in love.
It's a stand alone. I did not read the first book in the series.

Awalnya bagus sekali.

Kane and Willow

Kane had to learn from Willow what love was truly all about after she told him she loved him. Now he knows he loves her too and can't wait to marry her. Their lives have bonded together.

I enjoyed listening to this short book narrated by Catherine Carr. This book was fun and I enjoyed the clever repartee between Willow and Kane. Favorite part of the book - when Kane put Willow's father in his place regarding his treatment of Willow! Way to go, Kane!
