The Ultimate Millionaire

Rate this book
Todd Aston III's reputation as a playboy preceded him; he wore power as seamlessly as he wore his custom-cut suits. But Marina Nelson had promised her sister who was marrying Todd's cousin that she'd help him plan the perfect wedding. And somehow, between tasting cakes and modeling wedding dresses, Marina discovered that she wanted Todd and that Todd wanted her. She was powerless to prevent the inevitable. Yet the harder she fell for Todd, the more she realized that he didn't trust marriage-minded women.
Which made her grandmother's offer of a million dollars to whichever Nelson sister married him a big problem.

3.5 Stars Loved the story, didn't like the narration. I say it again, I don't understand why the same person didn't narrate the entire series. It's not that the narrator was unintelligible, her voice didn't fit the characters or was soft enough for certain moments in the plot. Her voice is better suited for a harder, edgier read. I don't know if that makes sense. The "voice" she gave Julie, Marina's sister, made her sound like a man...sheesh! Not good!

Okay so with that out of the way the story itself was fun, different, sensual and quite delightful. It fit in with the theme of the series and although I wasn't a fan of Todd's early on, I actually liked him in the end. Marina was an enjoyable character throughout the series, and her pairing with Todd worked, although initially I had my doubts. Since this was the last book in the series, I had hoped for an ending that involved all the sisters and their men, possibly an epilogue with Julie and Ryan's wedding as the setting. But, alas, it was not meant to be. The ending wrapped this book up nicely, but not the series, which was unfortunate.

Bottom line, I got the audio books for a very reasonable price, so I really can't complain. However, I would recommend reading these books in the written word for a more enjoyable read.

Thank you Dorsey for recommending the series, overall it was a good experience!

Todd and Marina. As per the rest of the series, their meeting relies on the machinations of matchmaking Ruth. She is Todd's great aunt by marriage, and Marina's estranged grandmother. But stuff has happened and even though neither has any intention of liking the other, they are forced to meet at long last. Marina is a super smart girl (the youngest sister) who fears marriage will destroy her as an individual. Todd is used to dealing with gold digging swindlers and doubts there are any women out there who don't see him as a meal ticket.
But they have agreed to work together to set up Julie and Ryan's wedding while the lovebirds scamper off to Japan.
I loved Marina. She's sweet, yet no nonsense and honest to a fault. Todd, however, was harder to like. At first he's one of those snarky arrogant heroes that rub me the wrong way. But by half way they are getting along (like really well if you get my meaning, nudge nudge wink wink), and he's dropped the attitude.
In fact, all seems hunky dory until the 'baby scare'. Then it was like Todd snaps and becomes his evil twin or something. Totally a 3 star if not a 2 star read... BUT
Marina told him where to stick it.... AND.... The grovel at the end was great and sweetly romantic.

When you have recently had hand surgery and one hand is virtually useless, this book is just the thing. It was lightweight and relatively easy to hold and read. The cover did not appeal to me but the story itself was tasteful and humerous. While it seems to be part of a family series, it was fine as a stand-alone and funny enough to help distract me from quite significant pain.

I loved all the books in this series, but it doesn’t feel complete. All 3 girls are engaged, but no weddings yet. Just the planning of Julie’s wedding. Is there more to the series?

Endingnya pun bagus (meski agak maksa). Tapi pertanyaannya, satu juta dollar itu beneran melayang ya?

This was the best of the three. No skimming!

I do have some plot complaints.

The sister's parents didn't show up in this book at all, which was weird because in the last two books we learned that Marina is the one who gets along the most with her father. In this book she says that her big emotional issue is that she's worried she'll fall in love and let a man treat her as badly as her father treats her mother, so she's obviously aware of the problem. Given all this, I really thought we should have had at least one scene with her and her father, or maybe her talking to her mother about it - or her having a big conversation with anyone really. All we get is a few passing comments made to her sister about her issues and her thinking about it, and that's it. I don't understand Mallery's choice in not addressing that in a real manner.

Then the Grandmother. Hooo boy. She was pretty much a non-character in these books and just a device to move plot along. People are often talking about her, but not so often with her. And when they do talk with her, it's always superficial. It's made clear that everyone respects her too much (why???) to actually have a serious conversation with her, so everyone blows off her horrible behavior and just lets it go.

My final complaint is the ending. It was a little too fast for me. Todd was unbelievably cruel to Marina. I get that we need a final conflict, but man, think twice (or three times) about marrying someone who could be that cold and calculating. At the very least, I hope they have some sort of pre-nup that makes it clear that she will not lose custody of her children if anything happens and that she does get money and support in the case of divorce.

The final apology scene was not enough for me. I can see them getting back together, but they obviously have a lot to work on. Some therapy for Todd in particular would be nice instead of just a single scene of an apology and we're done.

Ok, despite all these complaints, I actually enjoyed this one! A lot! It was a fun read. Good, consensual sex scenes (Mallery does really have a thing for men kissing women for the first time without asking and with no notice, but after that first obnoxious kiss, she usually settles into things being consensual). Overall, one of the Mallery books I actually enjoyed, didn't skim, and didn't yell about.

Ok so this was a quick read, and I gotta say, I don't know why I didn't stop.

So Todd and Marina are planning a wedding for her sister and his cousin. First red flag, the sister who's getting married is telling her to plan everything and just email her pictures, including pictures of the dress. No dress shopping? Well ok, maybe some women aren't into that.

So then when the two main characters meet... It goes way too into detail, including describing his mouth as the kind of mouth that makes a woman dream of being taken against her will. Ok then.

So it gets a little better. They decide that since they will be planning the wedding, they should go together as a date, that way their dates won't be bored. And... They fall in love. Despite the fact that they both have so much baggage.

The ultimate crap was that she thought she was pregnant and went to him.. and he accused her of trying to trap him for his money. So... It all works out though, just in time for for him to propose to her and of course she says yes.

I felt like this book was written by someone else... It was not for me, as you can tell. Maybe if you really love her you could overlook some of this

Lalu tidur bbrp kali dgn Todd, galau hamil. Lalu setelah positif tidak hamil, beraksi angkuh lagi bilang gak mau hamil kalau dgn Todd. Jelas kan kontradiksinya? Marina itu ibarat gadis dewasa tetapi jiwanya masih anak umur 8 thn. Sangat Ratu Drama.

Pertama, merayu-rayu, kedua, merasa dijebak saat Marina mengatakan dirinya hamil, ketiga, Todd masuk fase sakit hati, keempat, masuk fase kesadaran hidupnya hampa tanpa Marina. Yaelaaaah... klise bin gombal banget.

Great story. I liked that they planned the wedding for her sister and his friend while they were in the Orient on business. I am not sure if I could do that for someone else even a sister and with someone I did not know. It was a good story . Getting food poisoning was a high light but I felt sorry for them.

Todd and Marina

He had to learn how to trust women. In a way Marina needed to love her one man. They make a lovely couple once they believe in each other. Love for the has a hint of risk.

I love Susan Mallery books but this felt very little of Susan books and a typically puked up harlequin novel.
It is great for a harlequin book but not what I want from Susan Mallery. Maybe it was all there and it was the narrator. Guess I will never know.

This book was better than the other two. What was upsetting was the way Todd found out about the supposed pregnancy. It was unacceptable that Julie would her own sister out before she was sure about it. Rest of the book was pretty good.

I wouldn't call Todd Aston III the ultimate millionaire but underneath his public persona he's not bad. Meet sister 3, extremely smart and a bit stand offish.

Great story. Marina and Todd plan Julie and Ryan's wedding. There is definitely sexual chemistry. I don't like the end. Too quick to forgive after Todd said some horrible things.

That was a mediocre book with an incredibly awful hero. When the heroine has a pregnancy scare (side note, omg, how are all romance novel heroines unable to use birth control), the hero accuses her of trying to trap him with a baby. Seriously? Seriously. Seriously? No.

Tapi detail-detail lainnya, silahkan baca sendiri. #dor

Namun begitu sampai diakhir, aku jadi bertanya-tanya, apa wanita2 dalam roman selalu gampang luluh gitu ya? #hanya bertanya saja. Endingnya...hmm.. ya gitu deh..

Ya sudah, gitu aja.

The Ultimate Millionaire by Susan Mallery

This book is a recent re-print that was first published in 2007. It can be read as a standalone book even though it is part of a trilogy.

This very sweet novel is an extremely fast read. M In it we get to meet Todd Aston the Third and Marina Nelson. Marina’s sister is marrying Todd’s cousin and Marina and Todd have been asked to plan the wedding while the sister and cousin are in China for a few weeks. During the planning of this semi-formal wedding, we get to learn a lot about rich boy Todd, and how we should not judge a book by its cover. Todd has a problem with trusting women. It really does not help him that Marina’s grandmother has offered a million dollars if one of the three sisters should marry Todd. You can see why this would be a little hard for him to take.

This was an interesting book that focused less on the sex (although Ms Mallery has no problems at all writing sex scenes!) and more on the possible deeper relationship between the two. It focuses more on the humor of the situation than anything else.
There is the typical scene of misunderstanding and distrust, but there will be a typical happily ever after for the ending!

I had a lovely few hours with this book and I think you will too.

Just decent. The end just didn't fit.

***Details***

This was probably my least favorite of the three. I just didn’t like Todd and Marina together. Too much baggage.

Planning Ryan and Julie’s wedding was just unrealistic in my opinion. What bride would do that? So Todd and Marina are force to collaborate, but Marina’s preconceived notions about Todd turn out to be false and the two get along well.

Todd has been to jaded by women being after only his money and with the money on the line to the sisters if one marries him, he’s not willing to trust Marina either. Marina herself is too scared of turning into her mother if she allows herself to love.

They had a few escapades, but it isn’t until the end when

Just before the wedding, Todd is able to easily ask for forgiveness and propose.

This is the third book in the Million Dollar Catch series. This is Marina's story. Since Julie and Willow found men, Grandmother decides that Marina should marry Todd. She says she will not throw in the money but Marina is kidding and tells her it's okay. She will take the money. Julie and Ryan have to go to China for 6 weeks for work so they ask Todd and Marina to plan their wedding. Julie does not think that Todd will actually do any work, since he is a woman hater. But he is right by Marian's side to help.
Marina is surprised to find out that Todd is actually a nice caring man that had some bad things happen to him with gold digging women. They begin a relationship but something happens that rears them apart. Will they forgive each other?

I liked this story. I liked that everyone finally knows that Todd is not an ogre. Marina is perfect for him. i was sorry to learn that there are no more books in this series.
