This director, jazz musician, and playwright thrice won Academy Award. His large body of work mixes satire, wit and humor in the most respected and prolific cerebral style in the modern era. Allen directs also in the majority of his movies. For inspiration, Allen draws heavily on literature, philosophy, psychology, Judaism, European cinema, and city of New York, where he lives.

یه نمایشنامه معمولی راجب خانواده ای آمریکایی که با مشکلات زیادی دست و پنجه نرم میکنند. بنظرم شروع خوبی داشت. شخصیت ها قابل درک بودن. دیالوگ هارو دوست داشتم هرچند چیزی نبود که تو ذهنم موندگار بشه.
در کل از خوندنش لذت بردم ولی بنظرم پایانش میتونست خیلی بهتر باشه.
انگار که نمایشنامه نصفه بود یا میتونست طولانی تر باشه.

شروع ضعیف ،خیلی ضعیف.
حرفی برای گفتن نداشت.
پایان دَوَرانی بود. مثل خیلی از آثار دیگش.
نسبت به کارای دیگه‌ی آلن ، خیلی ضعیف بود.

پ.ن: اگه تو داستانم شخصیت الکنی داشته باشم ، هیچوقت لکنتش رو وارد دیالوگ نویسی نمی‌کنم و به یه توضیح کوتاه تو قسمت توضیحات صحنه بسنده می‌کنم تا خواننده موقع خوندن متن زجر نکشه...

نکتۀ مهم اینه که این نمایشنامه اصلاً طنز نیست و قرار نیست ما رو خنده بندازه.
یه درام خانوادگی و کم و بیش مبتنی بر زندگی خود وودی آلِنه.

البته اینها توجیه نمیکنه خوب نبودنش رو؛

در کتاب حباب معلق در بعضی قسمت ها طنز خوبی وجود داره و در قسمت های کمی به شخصیت ها به خوبی پرداخته شده و صحنه ی دوم به زیبایی به سمت پرده ی آخر کشیده میشه و چندین بار روزنه ی امید کوچکی به خواننده میده که پایان خوش نزدیکه و هربار القای دوباره ی ناامیدی به خواننده جذابیت داره ... اما بطور کلی این کتاب درامی معمولی قدیمی از خانواده ای شکست خورده ست که برای من هیجان و لذت کتابی بدیع و تازه بخصوص از وودی آلن رو نداشت و متاسفانه بنظرم حتا یک نویسنده ی نوپا و بی تجربه هم میتونه چنین کتابی بنویسه چون خواننده رو در موارد محدودی تحت تاثیر قرار میده و شاید، بنظرم وودی آلن فقط برای دست گرمی یا بوجود آوردن ساختاری به نحوی برای چیزی دیگر! این نمایشنامه رو نوشته

Esta es una obra de teatro en la que, como en la mayoría de los trabajos de Woody Allen, se describen algunas las situaciones complicadas en la vida de cualquier ser humano, provocando una reflexión con tono existencialista en el lector. Los temas que se abordan en esta obra son muchos y están desarrollados con una fluidez sobresaliente, de ahí la grandeza de Woody Allen.

Entre los temas que se tocan están el amor, el dinero, la fama, el matrimonia, la timidez, la infidelidad y sobre todo la ilusión. De esto último se basa la mayor parte de la historia. Por una parte está la ilusión que emplea un tímido joven para llevar acabo trucos de magia y del otro lado está aquella ilusión que tenemos en ciertos momentos de nuestras vidas acerca de cómo será nuestro futuro, si nuestros sueños se harán realidad algún día, si seremos plenamente felices. Y el recuerdo de esa ilusión cuando aquel momento futuro ahora se ha convertido en el presente.

En resumen, esta obra me encantó, es increíble cómo Woody Allen puede desarrollar algo tan profundo y provocar una reflexión a partir de una historia tan corta y en apariencia tan simple.

One of the things that I have only recently discovered is that Woody Allen is not only an actor, screenwriter, and director, but also a writer in other genres as well.  This particular work is a play of his that appeared on Broadway in 1981.  In reading this play, one can get a sense of the author's own struggles and his own knowledge of the upbringing of Jewish kids.  This play is not one that has an evident moral perspective, and in looking at it, one can see Allen's own marital problems in the action of the play itself.  Indeed, this is a play that centers on four people, with two peripheral characters included as well that demonstrate the pressures each of the parents as well as their children are under.  To say that none of the characters do a good job with the stresses and pressures that they are under would be a great understatement--as this play is definitely a tragic one, albeit the sort of tragedy that other people often laugh at and gain a great deal of amusement in.  The author seems to take his tragedy seriously, in the vein of an Arthur Miller or someone like that.

This particular play has two acts, in the manner of much of contemporary drama, and the first act has six scenes and the second act two scenes.  In the first act, we are set up with a problem in an apartment in postwar Brooklyn, with a father who doesn't make much money and tries to earn extra income through gambling, a mother who nags everyone else constantly, and two sons, one of whom is a truant who is involved with a gang of kids who is up to no good, and the other struggles with stuttering and seeks to withdraw into his own private world of magic tricks and fantasy and imagination.  By the end of the first act there is at least the potential for something to work out right, but this is snuffed out pretty quickly in the second act as the magic demonstration goes disastrously poorly and the talent scout, who is lacking a lot of talent to represent, spends more time trying to flirt with the mother than working with the nervous and uncomfortable son.  Finally, the play ends with the mother driving the father out of the house, leaving him to start again, one supposes with his mistress.

This play definitely qualifies as a domestic tragedy, but it is one that seems to belong more to the time period where the author was writing in the late 70's and early 80's than it does to the time the play is set in in the 1940's.  I wonder what it is that led the author to choose the time period he did--perhaps he wished to comment on an aspect of Jewish life in the cabaret circuit that is often neglected or forgotten nowadays, even if the author's social understanding has been filtered through contemporary corruption and the breakdown of the family rather than a better understanding of the past as it was lived by most people.  Beyond that, though, this play suffers a bit from being a domestic tragedy.  This play tells a situation that has occurred many times, perhaps even millions of times, with parents hostile to each other, one (or both) of the partners being unfaithful, and children who either strike out in anger or withdraw in isolation given the hostility in their home life.  This play does not offer anything except for a view of the unpleasant, with no pointing towards a way forward, and so it lacks the worth of a true dramatic masterpiece of domestic melodrama.

یک نمایشنامه ی جمع و جور و نیویورکی از وودی آلن .
از همین اول مشخص است با چه روبروییم. مادری سخت کوش و آمریکایی و دلسوز که برای دو پسرش (پل و استیو) دل می سوزاند و حرص می خورد. با شوهری که دل به زندگی ندارد و در فکر ترک کردن آنهاست.

اگر از حال و هوای فیلم های وودی آلن خوشتان می آید خواندن این پیس را ازدست ندهید.ضمن اینکه با یک نمایشنامه کمدی روبرو نیستید!

An almost forgotten play by Woody Allen I've always meant to read.

I was good solid comic drama. I kept seeing Mercedes Ruehl as Enid. I think it'd be a good play for our community theatre group (which means they'd never do it - ha ha).

Muy sencilla y fácil de leer, esta obra de teatro de Woody Allen con tonos agridulces nos cuenta la historia de los Pollock, una familia de judíos en un barrio humilde de Brooklyn. No hay mucha novedad en el relato, pero los personajes son tratados con cariño, probablemente inspirados en la infancia de Allen, y las dosis de humor son las justas. Me gustaría verla en escena.

برخلاف خیلی از کتاب ها که سرانجام خوبی دارد، این کتاب یک پایان ناامید کننده در بردارد که البته نشان دهنده ی بخشی از واقعیت است!
دیالوگ های نمایش نامه خسته کننده است و باعث جذب خواننده نمیشود.

Allen's third full-length play doesn't have a patch on his two early Broadway successes that contributed to his fame. It's closer to a domestic tragedy than the comedies for which he was known (although by 1981 he had branched out into serious films and would make a decent bundle of those over the years). It's a small-scale drama, Tennessee Williams perhaps but in a modest manner, or Neil Simon but without the whimsy, all contained within a formal, conventionally-structured script. The play didn't do well on Broadway, despite Bea Arthur and Danny Aiello as the dysfunctional parents whose frail son is their only hope. Still, it's a decent enough showcase for character and development, which weren't always strengths with Allen's later plays (indeed, were never really strengths again in his stage work). Not sure I'd rush to stage this any time soon, though. Allen's 50 films are where the meat is at; this is a placid soup by comparison.

Passable Woody Allen drama from the early 1980s--originally produced at Lincoln Center--has its moments but offers few revelations. It's essentially Tennessee Williams-lite, but worth the dollar I paid for it at a library sale this weekend.
