“This book is not only one of my favorite books on ‘defense against the dark arts,’ but is actually one of my favorite books in my whole library. Throughout the book, Jason provides [information] not only on protection but also on recognizing the symptoms of attack and creating early warning systems to alert you of magickal attacks.” —Mat Auryn, author of Psychic Witch
You Could Be the Target of a Spell or Curse and Not Even Know It
Everyone, whether they practice witchcraft or not, is susceptible to unwanted spells and curses. The difference is that witches and magicians can do something about it. Now you can too. Protection & Reversal Magick is a complete how‑to guide to prevent, defend against, and reverse magickal attacks of any kind. Here, renowned scholar and magick practitioner Jason Miller shows readers how to master these techniques:
Setting up early‑warning systems
Appeasing angry spirits through offerings
Performing banishings and making amulets that will prevent most attacks
Making magical “decoys” to absorb attacks against you
Summoning guardian spirits or gods for help
Binding, confusing, or expelling a persistent enemy who will not leave you be
These are techniques for witches, wiccans, ceremonial magicians, root doctors, and anyone else who puts magick to practical use. Like the cunning men and women of old, you can now defend yourself and your loved ones against even the strongest attacks.
This edition features a new introduction by the author and updates to the chapters.
Being still relatively new to my witchcraft journey, there were several things that I may not have understood to the fullest extent. That doesn't make the novel any less valuable; as a matter of fact this will probably be a book I revisit often. It offers protection for not only yourself, but your environment and your home as well. The types of protection Miller offers is very versatile. He not only includes banishing and cleansing, but also deflection, countering, traps, meditation, sigils, and so many more ways to offer protection for yourself and your loved ones that can fit into a lot of practices and crafts.
One thing I would have loved to see in this revised edition is more inclusive and less gendered language. The book was written in 2006, so I give Miller the benefit of the doubt, but the revision was written in 2022, so I think he could have done a little better with that.
Amazing book, full of information on defensive and protection magick. A lot of his rituals and spells are Hekatean, which is great for me as someone who is interested in becoming a follower of Hekate. Can't recommend this book enough.
This book is helpful to read whether you are newer to practicing witchcraft or more experienced and knowledgeable. It's good to know and understand what is considered to be a genuine psychic, spiritual, occult related magickal attack, or when any type of witch, magician, occultist has sent energy to you to harm you on purpose & when it is simply paranoia, mental illness or spiritual psychosis. The author is male, but in my opinion it would have been helpful if the author included a female Witch's perspective in the book. The author is well known to witches, a lot of witches are familiar with their written work, so I know their knowledge, experience with witchcraft is trustworthy and a good source of information to rely on.
I like and appreciate that the author has been taught by various types of witches, sorcerers, Occultists about their spiritual path, spiritual & occult beliefs and practices since I have eclectic beliefs so this resonates with me. I obviously respect that there are closed practices and this should be mentioned in any book about witchcraft, some spiritual, occult paths, especially the Left Hand Path, or spiritual spiritual paths require you to be initiated, taught by a practitioner of that specific spiritual, or occult path. I like that the book is dedicated to the Goddess Hekate & the Law Papa Legba. I have felt drawn to working with the Goddess Hekate & other dark Goddesses for a long time. It isn't mentioned however until page 125 though that invoking spirits can be potentially dangerous if you don't know how to protect your energy, or you're inexperienced and don't know what you are doing, so I think this should have been explained sooner in the book, but that's just my opinion. The author didn't explain if it is safe to invoke spirits that were directly gifted to him personally from the Goddess Hekate if you are an inexperienced witch, or you haven't yet created a strong bond/connection to Hekate if you invoke protective spirits associated with the Goddess Hekate.
Some of the rituals seem a bit complicated or long winded and very repetitive, so it would have been nice if there were a few examples that were simple for novice witches to practice & more advanced spells and rituals for the more experienced witches. Other than information about the Goddess Hekate there was really much about Pagan witches, it would have been nice if Pagan practices was included. I don't practice closed practices, so any information about Hoodoo & Vodou is interesting but doesn't resonate with me. The notes could have been included in the new edition commentary at the end of each chapter, it would have been helpful to have a in-depth explanation of the various types, methods of protection & counter-magick the author has written about while reading the chapters in the book. Overall I think this is a necessary book for all witches, that are male & female to read, it is helpful information. I'm not experienced with practicing witchcraft myself, I still need to study and practice protecting my energy, creating wards, invoking protective spirits. It is good that the author is mindful of not always including rituals that some people would abuse, and use against innocent people. Everyone should be mindful or anyone that is constantly thinking/believing they are under spiritual attack, spiritual psychosis and mental illness should be taken seriously and professional help is needed in that specific scenario, situation. All seek professional help if/when it is required. As the phrase is quoted "Mundane before magick"
The old classic of Jason Miller comes in a new guise and I couldn't be more excited, since it is one of my favorite books on the topic. Of course, as those of us who have read the original book know, the content is precise, well structured and very practical. Miller's style is concise, unapologetically on point with a pinch of great humor.
The new edition adds a new, very well done cover, that somehow manages to upstage the old one and some additional texts by Miller. They are presented as short sections at the end of each chapter, which I find very useful - one doesn't get lost between previous and updated content. While they do indeed add some small, useful tips to the original content, one can not help but wonder "Did Miller wrote this because he was obliged to?" Most of the chapters begin with "I can't add anything to this chapter". Which on one side, speaks about the great quality of the original text of course. But on the other, makes the reader feel like the author was forced into doing this updated edition, without actually wanting to do it or having the time for it.
Anyway, I give it 4 stars, because the content of the book is still precise, well structured and very practical. And an updated edition is always a useful tool for newer audiences.
I knew about this book for a while. I knew about it and what to read it because of the goddess Hecate. The book has been revised and updated where the author has made amendments.
Chapters include identifying the attack, daily practices, personal protection, protection of the home, spirits, counter magic.
I loved that he pointed out clearly how he has a different perspective than he once did. When it comes to a daily practice he suggests meditation, offering to appease your local spirits and banishing. At time he first wrote the book he suggested that even after the attack to continue with this practice. Now he disagrees with this view point. Yes during the attack banish but when the attack is done replace banishment with devotion.
The author has changed this point of view on serval topics. I really liked this.
I love this book! Jason Miller is a great author and teacher and I wish I had found his books long ago. This book is great for every magickal practitioner and especially for everyone working with Hekate, eventhough it is not necessary to work with her for reading this book or doing the spells etc. which are included. I love Millers style. I love that he gives you the backround needed and clear advise but just enough so that you still have to make it your own. I never thought I would need a book like this. Now it's one of my favourite.
Jason Miller books are always jammed packed with knowledge. I read one of he’s books last year and I made it my business to read a few more of his books this year. The aspect I like most about Mr. Miller’s books is how honest and open he is about the information he gives. He has an understanding that not a lot of people now a days have access to people who are initiated in certain practices or can be initiated themselves. He leaves things open but with respect to those practices. I definitely plan to read more of his books and it’s without a doubt that I recommend this book.
The info is pretty solid, but I feel like the author made up his situations a bit. I also don’t follow Hekate, and didn’t know she would be so heavily relied on through the book. However, the info itself is still good, and I do like seeing others views on their own practice!
No wasted space, I found this very useful and very informative. It did not skip encouraging medical professionals (especially mental health professionals) when needed, which is always a plus.
Was looking for a book on energetic cleansing and protection, and this came highly recommended. It comes at it from a ritual magic approach with Hekate as the focus. Not really my interest, so I didn’t really take away much. If that’s your thing there’s a lot of information for you. It was an easy read.
A terrific re-write of a terrific book. For me, multiple readings are required not because the text is overly complicated or obscure but because the content is so very practicable that I learn something new with each reading. I highly recommend all of Jasons’ books.
