For the past three years, prostitutes and destitute women have been vanishing without a trace. Fates unknown, they share two common links: their physical attractiveness and prison records. The mastermind behind the disappearances has proven to be a smart contender, outwitting the best and leaving no clues – until he goes against all the rules and kidnaps a cop. Detective Billie McCoy, a member of a Sydney elite undercover squad, is on a simple assignment when her world is unexpectedly turned upside down. Stumbling onto a slavery racket run by a ruthless cop, she is plunged into a web of corruption that goes deeper than she could ever have imagined. Not only does Billie have to contend with the slave traders, but her fellow prisoners – ex-crims who have no time for cops. Filled with determination, companionship, disappointment and twists, the story follows Billie’s fight for freedom and her greatest ever challenge. The journey will bring out the best and worst in all involved. In its wake, friendships are cemented between the most unlikely characters. Billie will need all her cunning and skill to get herself and the other prisoners out alive. Blood will be spilt, hopes will be destroyed, tears will be shed – all to uncover a plot so unpredictable that only fate can decide. . .
Carol lives on a property outside the small country town, Childers in Queensland, Australia. Married with three grownup children, she is now retired from working in a primary school as a Teacher Aide, where she also looked after the library and drove the school bus. Most of her life Carol has played in a four-piece band with her husband and they have now formed a duo after the band folded. She loves to travel, both abroad and in Australia, which she is now discovering more of in her caravan. Fishing, camping and gardening are some of her favourite hobbies.
The characters are great and well developed and the relationships between them evolve throughout. The main character seems like a cross between James Bond and John Wayne, but female, which I find very refreshing. There is action waiting around every corner and bad guys coming out of the woodwork! A couple of helpful souls help to balance that out somewhat. But you ask yourself just how could anyone be THAT unlucky?
