Writing is a beautiful thing.

I consider myself blessed I'm able to do this for a living. I live for fantasy books as a reader and author. I adore books like An Ember in the Ashes, The Night Angel Trilogy, Harry Potter, The Great Library series...I could go on.

Before I write I have four young humans I keep alive and love them to the stars and back again. I live in Utah with my sexy husband, the kiddos, two paranoid dogs, and a sinister cat. Between finishing a second degree, running a business, and eating too much chocolate, I love writing early in the morning when no one is awake. If you can't tell, I basically function on caffeine.

DNF @Page 254
First dnf of the year 2024 ☹️😭

Unfortunately this wasn't for me at all. I tried so hard to love it but I couldn't careless about the plot, characters or romance. Although I say I read 254 pages, I skimmed at least 50 pages there too. I admit my expectations were extremely high and the blurb did sound promising, it just didn't deliver.

Everything about this book bored me. And don't even get me started on the main characters calling each other "Songbird" and "Serpent." It did not help along with the immense number of grammatical errors. The romance was meh. The characters had little personality. The overall plot confused me so much? Like what are you trying to tell me?! 😭😭

Although it did not work for me, others have loved it. So if you wanna give it a go, please do. If you are like me and can't overlook the issues I had either, then don't waste your time on this book.

"Taking a life is no small thing, but doing so to save your own does not make you a monster."
A tear fell onto her cheek. She let her head fall until her brow pressed against my chest. "What if I am?"
"Then you are the most beautiful monster I've ver seen."

re-read august 2024: who gave this book the right to be so good 😩🤌🏼

Everyone listen:
I think, no wait, I'm sure I've found my new favorite romantasy book and, from now on, with your kind permission, I more than gladly won't shut up about it!!

"You were never supposed to matter, but you do. You ruined everything, and I don't care. Ruin me. Destroy me. As long as I have you."

I'll start this review with a disclaimer.
You see those 5 stars up there, shiny and sparkly and impossibly hard to miss?
At least two of them were put up there for the sole reason that my self-indulgent ass finally got one of the best romantasy fixes of its life, after the sexy epiphany that brought A Court of Silver Flames into my life.
I'll elaborate in a few, but it's important for me to be honest with my opinions, first.

Is The Ever King a bad book? No, not at all.
Even if you read this and end up hating its plot, you couldn't deny the exquisite job the aurhor did with the setting, the character construction or simply with the writing.
Objectively, though, it's undeniable that some areas could have used more work (the pace felt a tad rushed, for example) and the and others will result a little confusing if you, like me, haven't read Andrews's original series of which The Ever King is a spin-off of.
With this I'm not saying The Ever King doesn't fully deserve the high praise it has here on GR or that I'm fully biased with my final ratings.
I'm simply stating the obvious which is that, when it comes to this book - which is objectively good, anyway - I'm wearing sexy fae pirate-tinted glasses.
This book simply resonates with me on a deep level and not because it's technically flawless, but because all the elements that make it up are combined in a way that makes it impossible for me to find it anything but irresistible.
Fangirling aside, I promised I'd be honest, and honesty you'll have.
Plotwise speaking, I had very little trouble getting into this or understanding the world building. It took me two seconds to realize I was reading something which lore'd already been developed in a previous work, but my curiosity found satisfaction, anyway.
In truth, it kinda felt like something was missing, at times. I also felt like MMC's motivations sounded a bit weak at times, especially considering how quickly things changed between him and Livia.
It was a page-turner, nonetheless.
I was so hooked I read half of it in 2 hours and would have kept reading had adult life not gotten in the way.

"I promise you something, my little songbird." Those eyes leered down hisstraight nose. This close I could make out the daintest freckles on his soft brown skin. Reluctantly, my lungs filled with the odd scent of him, salt and leather and something sweet, like the sugared glazes in the hall. Bloodsinger pressed his lips to the side of my cheek. my fists clenched as he whispered, "You will be a pleasure to break."

This was my first time reading anything by L.J. Andrews, but I promise you it won't be the last.
If her other works are anything like this one, I might have to sign one of my kidneys up for sale and go purchase her entire backlist.
The quotability of her lines (some of which I've added to my review, in case you've missed it lol) is divine. I read stuff that made my legs turn to jelly and kept thinking "I want what these bitches have!"

A man he's not,
we work, we rot.
No sleep until it's trough...
A sailor's grave
is all we crave,
we are the Ever King's crew!

I'm in love with the Ever King.
Don't tell Cassian he's got competition, because damn, Erik Bloodsinger is fiiiiiiiiiine😩🤌
Using Livia's words: he was despicable, wretched, and I couldn't look away.
I absolutely adore him, his damaged soul, his broken ego and his charisma.
If the man appeared in front of me and said jump, I'd literally turn into a Van Halen fan and hop my way to Canada and return.
I loved how very heartless he was with his enemies (I'm talking Kaz Brekker pulling someone's eye out kind of heartless) and how forward with his intentions he always seemed to be.
Livia was just as likeable, and while she was pretty younger than I like my FMCs to be lately, I related to her and rooted for her right from the start.
Go queen, go!

He refastened his belt. For a long moment, Erik hesitated, then he leaned over and bruised my lips with his kiss. When he pulled away, he whispered, “Still hate me?”
“Always,” I said, desperate to either shove him back or pull him close. I gripped the quilts.
Erik’s mouth turned up in a half grin, but his words were rife in something soft, something vulnerable. “Hate me all you want, but don’t regret me. Promise me that.”

The secondary characters were simply amazing.
I kind of felt like Livia made friends with some of her so-called enemies a little too soon, but overall I deeply appreciated the found family aspect of this book.
I really hope we'll get to know more of Livia's friends from home, in the next book, too.

"You, Erik Bloodsinger, are the kind of darkness I would follow across the skies and seas."

The romance was, as you may have figured out by now, my favorite part.
I'm not sure the progression between enemies to lovers is a strong one, but I'm not sure you can consider Erik and Livia enemies, either.
It was clear that, right from the start, nothing would have come in between these two, not even them being from opposites sides of an infinite war.
I love how they always communicate with each other. For example, I infinitely appreciated when Livia was in danger and Erik proceeded to explain to her exactly what was going on, because not knowing would be even more harmful.
You don't see this shit everyday in Romantasy Town where secrets are kept for the sake of creating drama, so the fact that the aurhor went against the flow and somehow called out this particular trope turning it into a beautiful thing, was another win in my eyes.

I'd wanted passion and mess and a love that caused a delirious kind of need.
I'd found it in my enemy.

Another thing that made me a Livia/Erik shipper for life, is the fact that they are both pining messes when it comes to the other and that Livia is just as thirsty for Erik as he's for her.
Men in books are often the only ones praising the girl, so it was very refreshing that for once the feeling was mutual and that Livia turn on her rizz and wooed and complimented Erik all the time, as well. Boys like being told they're beautiful and sexy, too!
And OMG the way Erik pulled a Rhys and . If panties could fly, mine would be still circumnavigating Earth after that scene.
I ship them so hard it's not even funny, anymore.
At this point, it resents obsession, but I'm trying my best to pretend I haven't lost my mind to this book completely.

He cupped the back of my head, drawing me close, and spoke with a new sort of longing, dark and fierce. “Be sure before doing this, love. Do this, and I don’t go back. You’re mine.”
A tremble ran up my arms. Buried in the dark timbre of his voice was a threat. A promise. I hesitated for a breath, then kissed him.
“I said I’m yours.” I trapped his face in my palms. “I’m waiting for you to become mine.”

I'd write more but I've reached GR limit.
So.
In conclusion, this book was everything I've been asking for in a book these past two years, and then some, and if the sequel doesn't come out soon I might cry.
I know it probably won't have the same effect on others, but I'm kinda hoping it does because I'm tired of having to carry the weight of being the only person I know who sings this book and this author's well-deserved praise.
And also, gatekeeping is for cowards.

Let's all go thirst over Erik Bloodsinger together 🛐🛐🛐

"Say it. Say you dreamt of me like I've dreamt of you."
"You've haunted me, love. Since the end of that war, I've never forgotten you."

The Ever King had me staying up reading and writing a review at 2 am. If I could give this book more than 5 🌟stars I would. For the record I WILL ACCEPT NO CRITICISM ON THIS BOOK OR my man Erik BLOODSINGER. mkkayy 🤭🤭

The characters, the world building, the magic, the tension and SPICE are all on point. I loved every minute of this book and I NEED the next book immediately. Thank the heavens I don’t have to wait too long because I would have found the author’s address and showed up on her doorstep.

Erik Bloodsinger..Erik fucking Bloodsinger. I don’t have any words y’all have to take my word this man is perfection. Jealous, possessive, morally DARK gray, and the way he calls her “love” 🫠 He pulled on my heartstrings forreals he’s the tortured, scarred hero who needed someone to love him but he has been pushed to be cold and unfeeling. Livia is such a queen. She’s strong, fierce, compassionate and caring. I loved how she stood up for Erik when no one else did. She’s the light to his darkness and I loved how well they compliment each other.
“𝐇𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭. 𝐈’𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞.”

Fav Quotes

“Such a beautiful little bird. What a pity it was that her serpent had come to ruin her.”

“Careful with your threats of my untimely death, love, or you might end up stealing my heart.”

“Hate me, curse me, I cared little, so long as I was the first thought of her day and the last of her night.”

I’ve thought of nothing else other than your sweet legs wrapped around me, your naked body in my hands, and my name on your tongue right before you come apart.” 🥵🥵

Do I recommend? HELL YES!! Run don’t walk 🏃🏻‍♀️and add to your TBR neeooowww

Thank you to my bestie Nunu for the recommendation and for sharing Erik with me🤭♥️

the dumbass fmc has the backbone of a crumbling sugar cookie. she has no ambitions, no cunning, not a shred of common sense and absolutely nothing going on for her apart from the fact that everyone around her just seems to love her even though she has the personality of a dead, rotting fish that has been sitting under the sun for 4 days. of course she also betrays those friends and family that love her and support her at the first chance she gets.
i truly hope she does something interesting someday, like dying.
not that i’d be reading it when it happens.

It took me a second to get invested into the storyline. The beginning was quite slow and I wasn’t sure if I was going to enjoy it. But… at the half way mark I couldn’t stop reading. I was living for the banter and the tension between the main characters and by the end I was scrabbling to pick up the next book.

“Hate me, curse me, I cared little, so long as I was the first thought of her day and the last of her night.”

Okay, I’m obsessed! I loved every second of this! I’ll be inscribing Erik Bloodsinger’s name on my heart right next to Rhysand’s. Honestly, they were pretty similar characters now that I think about it. Both were morally gray leaders who were willing to do whatever was needed to keep their people safe. Erik had to maintain his dark persona as a show of strength and was willing to kill when necessary, but he was very loyal to the people he cared about and didn’t seek out opportunities to be cruel. Oh… and he made her his queen even though his people would be against it and see it as a weakness. Sounds familiar, right? That was sort of a spoiler I guess, but it’s also the title of the next book, so I figure the author already let that one out of the bag. 😆

I wasn’t sure I would like this because it’s listed as Dark Romance which isn’t usually my jam, but this was maybe one notch down on the dimmer switch. 😋 The only reason for this to be labeled “dark romance” is that the FMC was taken and held captive by the MMC. He never hurt her and was actually pretty protective and gentlemanly towards her though. Apart from the first initial underwater kiss, he was careful to never touch her without her consent even when she was lust drunk (magically) and throwing herself at him. He received very little love in his life and had endured terrible things, but he still managed to remain good at his core. Exactly the kind of anti-hero we love to read about!

There are some twists and some things that aren’t quite what they seem. It also ends on a pretty major cliffhanger that left me needing more! The only thing that kept me from diving straight into book two was that I still had to write this review and I didn’t want to risk getting the two books mixed up in my head. I can’t wait to start The Ever Queen just as soon as I wrap up my current read! 🤗 I really hope it’s as good as this one! 🤞🏻

Favorite Quotes:

╰┈➤ Play “Rewrite the Stars”- by Zac Efron and Zendaya

"𝙏𝙤 𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜...
𝘽𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙩𝙩𝙖𝙘𝙠 𝙝𝙞𝙨 𝙦𝙪𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙊𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙 𝙞𝙣 𝙥𝙞𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙨."

Bear with me, this review can seem a little messy.

"𝙎𝙪𝙘𝙝 𝙖 𝙗𝙚𝙖𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙛𝙪𝙡 𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚 𝙗𝙞𝙧𝙙. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖 𝙥𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙞𝙩 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙝𝙖𝙙 𝙘𝙤𝙢𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙧𝙪𝙞𝙣 𝙝𝙚𝙧."

Erik Bloodsinger also known as Serpent and King of the Ever is literally the hottest mmc I have ever met. He calls her Songbird and Love like that’s so cute. He’s a morally gray and broken pirate with a tormented past. He has trust issues after something that went down with her family and people. He was captured on her land as a child and during his days in the dungeon she would come down and read to him a story she wrote where the characters were a Songbird and a Serpent. Let me tell you, he literally remembered the story and the characters all those years. Not only is he a sexy ass pirate but he’s got an accent, humor, and literally he’s the funniest guy I’ve ever read about. I forgot what the red flags were when I was with him. My guy literally kidnapped the fmc and made it so hot lmfao I need therapy (it’s the nicknames I swear). Erik was known for being this brutal, cold, ruthless, and hellbent guy on avenging his father, (did I mention his blood is poisonous?) Then later discovers that his vengeance does not have to be at the cost of annihilating a bunch of peoples lives.

"𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙫𝙚𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙚, 𝘽𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙙𝙨𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧,
𝙔𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙙 𝙞𝙨 𝙨𝙚𝙩, 𝙨𝙤 𝙙𝙤 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙢𝙪𝙨𝙩, 𝙗𝙪𝙩 𝙄 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢.
𝙄 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙣𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙗𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙥𝙖𝙬𝙣 𝙩𝙤 𝙝𝙪𝙧𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙢. 𝙄'𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙡𝙞𝙩 𝙢𝙮 𝙤𝙬𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙧𝙤𝙖𝙩 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩."

Livia, also known as Songbird, struggles with panic attacks and anxiety. She is marked, which forms a bond with Erik. She kinda has a backbone, she is pretty stubborn and strong, she doesn’t really take anyone's shit. I do like how at times she did stand up to him. I will say she’s a bit annoying and dumb in the middle, my girls always getting herself into trouble I swear- it’s like at that point Erik had to watch her constantly 24/7 in case she fell into the ocean or walked into a wall. I do wish we could have known more about her character, I wanted to know more about her powers and abilities like it was never really explored it was just “look she can do this” which I wished it was more like give me more scenarios or powerful scenes where she displays more of her powers because they tell us she is very powerful but it's never really shown.

"𝙃𝙖𝙩𝙚 𝙢𝙚, 𝙘𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚 𝙢𝙚, 𝙄 𝙘𝙖𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙡𝙚, 𝙨𝙤 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙨 𝙄 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙨𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙙𝙖𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙡𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙣𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩."

Their relationship literally reminded me so much of Klaus and Caroline. Morally gray mmc who was only evil because of his traumatic and troubled past which ultimately made him the way he was but inside he was only broken and needed someone to show him his ways in life and someone to comfort him. The hate to love relationship, the sexual tension and attraction was there, no matter how many times they were supposed to hate each other and despise one another, they couldn’t fight off the attraction. There's forbidden love since their families/realms hate each other, so they feel like they have to despise one another. So that push and pull comes in when she tries to tell herself that she can’t fall for him, and she can’t be with him because of the things he’s done but ultimately tries to find the good in him as well and can't help but fall for that side of him despite what others might say.

➳His humor I swear- pirates are so hot🥵

I very much enjoyed this novel and I was sure I found another romantasy series to binge on. Unfortunately, the 2nd volume was a total disappointment for me but I will write about that one in the proper place.

The Ever King is a spin-off from the Broken Kingdom series. I did not read that one but it was not a problem. There are some characters from those books, such as the parents, and there are allusions to certain events. However, it did not dilute the enjoyment of the novel.

The blurbs says that: “For years Erik, the scarred king of the Ever Kingdom, has thought of nothing but vengeance against the man who killed his father and trapped him beneath the waves, making him a prisoner in his own realm. Until his enemy’s daughter, Livia, unintentionally breaks the chains on the Ever, and Erik makes her the unwitting pawn in his vicious game of revenge.” He kidnaps her in order to recover a magic artifact which he thinks will help him with some issue the kingdom faces. Little does he know that the thing he seeks no longer exists and its power now resides in Livia. Or something like that

It was a fast paced fantasy, an enemies to lovers with pirates, sirens, witches and faes. It has a bit of darkness in it but nothing too excessive, I would say. Erik is a bit inclined towards murder and torture but I like them a bit vicious, when there are reasons for violence. In books, obviously.

I also enjoyed the dual narrations which went very well as an audiobook as it was performed by two voices.

3.5⭐️ Spicy pirate Fae romantasy?? In. But to be COMPLETELY HONEST… there wasn’t anything special about this, like nothing really happened until the 70% mark but I still somehow managed to have a good time?? I was really in need of something light hearted and fun so I could turn my brain off after reading an emotionally taxing book before this, and this did exactly that. I can’t say it was anything memorable yet I immediately had to jump into book two after that ending!

I really loved the captor captive aspect of this, but the enemies to lovers was WEAKKKKKK. Our MMC however was scrumptious and I loved him. The FMC was pretty bland, I liked her but she didn’t give me much.

This is for those who like romance with a side of fantasy, the focus was definitely on the relationship between our two main characters. And they definitively delivered on tension, chemistry and banter! But I do personally like my fantasy romance books to not be as romance heavy.

The world building was very simple I think this was be great for people wanting to get their feet wet in the Romantasy genre or who are just look for a fun time. The magic system was poorly explained but for some reason that I simply cannot explain, I didn’t care. I think this book just found me at the right time when I was in the mood for it and I’m not mad about. But I could also 100% see people being very bored by this as well, so take with that what you will 😭

I wanted this to become a new favorite romantasy so badly, but it just didn't hit how I wanted it to. This was supposed to be an epic pirate romance, but so much of the pirating happened OFF PAGE. They get into this huge pirate battle, but it's from the heroine's POV and she's belowdeck for 90% of it. Seriously??? And the romance was good, but nothing that left me swooning. They met when they were kids and it felt like the connection was just supposed to be there instead of actually feeling it build. We got dumped into the story and it was definitely hard for me to get into it for a bit with how much we just were supposed to kind of know about the story and take for what it was. For me, I felt like most of it was told and not shown and it was just hard for me to believe the epicness of the romance or how action-packed and intriguing the plot was. Everything just felt *fine* and I wasn't obsessed like it seems everyone else is with this story. The ending did have me intrigued and I probably will pick up the next book, but my expectations will be a bit lower.

Sea fae with pirate vibes and magic — sign me up!

After being imprisoned in his own realm beneath the sea, the Ever King seeks revenge by kidnapping his enemy’s daughter—the very one who unknowingly breaks the spell on the chasm that was keeping him there.

The story started off a little slow, but that’s something I’ve come to expect from the first book in most fantasy series, since there’s a whole new world to introduce and a lot of characters to learn.

Once I settled into the story, I really enjoyed it—especially the second half. I just wish there had been a bit more action and a stronger focus on the plot rather than the romance.

This book ends on a cliffhanger, but thankfully book two is already out since I’m curious to see what happens next. Erik Bloodsinger gets all the stars, but the book itself is 3.5 stars rounded up.

** I started with the audiobook but switched to reading on my Kindle pretty quickly since the female narrator’s voice for the MMC felt overdone and distracted me from the story.

If I had known this before starting, I probably would have skipped this one based on this piece of information only (yes, I am that petty):

Bloodsinger (mmc) - 109 times;
Songbird (fmc) - 105 times;
Serpent (mmc) - 76 times;
Fox (fmc) - 26 times.

*now I know not all of them were used in a nickname/term of endearment kind of way BUT MY POINT STANDS*

❗️❗️Cliffhanger
❗️❗️This series is a spinoff from The Broken Kingdom, and there are some (very) mild spoilers about the first 3 books of the original series. It is possible to read and enjoy this book without reading the original series, though.

She was never theirs anyway. Not really. From the moment the songbird tried to appeal to a serpent, she was mine.

A decade ago, the war between the land faes and the faes of the Ever ended with the victory of the land faes. To make sure that there was no more violence between their people, and to punish the people of the Ever, the Chasm was created. It is an impenetrable wall in the sea that prevents people from leaving the Ever, that is, until Livie unexpectedly weakens the Chasm and allows the Ever King, Erik Bloodsinger, to come to land and abduct her to ransom her to her father, the fae King. Livie has heard rumors about the Ever people her whole life. She knows how violent and ruthless they are, but she also shares a past with Erik and remembers him as just a boy. Erik also remembers Livie and the kindness she showed her, but he cannot let these memories get in the way of his plan to give her back in exchange for his father’s magical mantle that would allow him to become more powerful and finally be able to help the people of the Ever.

The beginning was engaging, and it was easy to get into the story. The world-building was kept simple, especially since this is a spinoff series, so most readers are aware of the layout of the land and the politics at work already. I only read the first 3 books of the original series, but it was enough for me to understand most of the references to past events. For someone who has not read the original series, this book can still be enjoyable, but the first third might feel a little overwhelming at times with casual mentions of characters we never met in this book, or vague references to events that happened in the previous series.

“When I claim that moment of bravery, it will not be sudden. It will be slow. It will be well thought out. I will wait until I have you in my grasp. You may not even realize it has happened. In that moment, I will strike and watch you bleed.”

Livie is a strong main character, without being the “kickass warrior princess” or the one who is “not like the other girls” we see too much lately in romantasy books. While I find that her romance with Erik could have progressed more smoothly, I love that she was willing to stand up for him and that she realized that there was more to it whenever someone dropped a bomb about Erik. There were plenty of opportunities for a good old miscommunication trope, but the author didn’t go there, and I like the maturity it showed in Livie. She was willing to talk to Erik and to listen to him, instead of jumping to conclusions. It also shows a different type of strength: she was willing and able to stand for herself and Erik, even though she was scared, or among dangerous people she didn’t know.

“Ah, love. You think your peace was won with gentle morals? We all have a darkness within us, and desperation to survive can reveal the cruelest pieces.”

Erik is layered and morally gray, and I like him. He is the King of the Ever, and his people are desperate for him to save them and heal their lands, making him feel helpless at times. He has a dark past and trust issues, making him a very lonely king. He hates Livie’s people and promised to kill them all, but at the same time, he has a good heart and does not want to kill everyone indiscriminately. He would die to save his people, yet he does not hesitate to kill anyone in his way. He is full of contradictions, and I like that the author showed his good side just as much as his ruthless side. We can see that there is darkness in him, but he is not inherently bad because of that.

“I am in your hands, I am at your command, for you have made me love you, and you will be my destruction because of it.”

“Hate me all you want, but don’t regret me. Promise me that.”

The romance is good, but it is not the best hate-to-love I’ve read. It is clear from the start that Livie and Erik are physically attracted to each other, but they come from enemy nations and hate each other. Livi hates Erik because he abducted her, and Erik hates Livie because of what her family did to him and his people in the war that ended 10 years ago. It got a little messy near the middle of the book, when Livie was suddenly feeling mad ans sad that Erik wouldn’t engage in sexual activities with her, when he didn’t do much to show her that he was a “worthy” love interest and that he was not the heartless monster she believed him to be. Things got back under control after that, and the rest of the relationship development felt smoother, but those first steps that crossed the line between Livie wanting to escape and hurt Erik and Livie desiring him and wanting his attention could have been better developed, so it didn’t feel as sudden. That being said, overall it was a good hate-to-love romance, and it was a slow burn enough for it to be believable.

There is mild smut, mostly in the second half of the book, but sadly, there is also one of my pet peeves: having sex in the middle of a very serious conversation or a very inappropriate moment. There is one instance where Livie and Erik are having a serious conversation, with shocking revelations that could change everything between them, yet they put it on pause to have sex… I mean, I get that they are attracted to each other, but couldn’t it have waited for a few more minutes? And how does one go from being shocked, stressed, and angry, even, to suddenly wanting to have sex *at this very moment*? Am I a boring adult who does not understand passion anymore, or are they acting like hormone-driven teens whose brain shuts off as soon as they brush against each other?

If you enjoy the found family trope, you will like where this series is going. It’s not quite there yet, but we can see that it is coming. I do think that Livie made friends with some of her so-called enemies a little quickly, though. I would have expected more suspicion and reserve from both sides. Still, I loved seeing her grow close to Celine and the other crew members, and I know I will enjoy the found family Livie will end up with at the end of this series.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and will be reading the sequel soon. The romance is a slow-burn, but has some moments that are a little too fast-paced, but besides that, I cannot really complain about this book. There is magic, faes, pirates, some scheming and politics, as well as action, and the beginning of a found family trope. I would recommend it to romantasy lovers looking for something with a hint of pirates.

I am freaking hooked, omg. The amount of tabs I put in this book is unreal.

This is EXACTLY what I needed when I said I was in the mood for a fantasy romance with pirates. Enemies to lovers, morally grey fae MMC, an ending that makes me immediately want to read the next book? CHECK!

I do think this book started off slightly slow - but it's obviously just the world building! I know for a fact I will devour the next one coming out at the end of the month.

I LOVED this.

Ohhhhh this was a really good romantasy. And I CANNOT wait for The Ever Queen.

I had a couple smaller issues with this, and I have to say I called the ending, but I'm still so stoked because it was what I was hoping would happen as it's gonna make for a kickass sequel.

I wouldn't say this is SJM or JLA level, but this was incredibly entertaining and I know I'm about to get sucked into the LJ Andrews Verse ❤️‍🔥🤘🏻

this was so much fun !!! i was a bit skeptical at first and think there were some pacing issues for both the plot and the romance, but overall it was a very enjoyable read. the last third had me in it’s grip and i couldn’t put it down!

erik… yeah. i’m sat. i think he’s the most interesting character in the book and has so much more depth than i originally thought.

i wanted pirates and i got pirates so i’m a happy girl !! (though i wish it was a little more pirate-y, but beggars can’t be choosers and all that jazz)

now i just have to wait for my libby hold on the ever queen to come through.

Okay, but seriously, Erik can kidnap me any day of the week and whisk me away to his kingdom. 😏 This pirate x viking fae fantasy world will have you swooning over Erik Bloodsinger while low-key hating the FMC because, let's be real, she’s not you.

"𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒐 𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒕𝒆𝒓, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒅𝒐. 𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒓𝒖𝒊𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑰 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒄𝒂𝒓𝒆. 𝑹𝒖𝒊𝒏 𝒎𝒆. 𝑫𝒆𝒔𝒕𝒓𝒐𝒚 𝒎𝒆. 𝑨𝒔 𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒔 𝑰 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 𝒚𝒐𝒖."

The writing is a bit rushed, I won’t deny it, but honestly, that’s how I like it—my brain can only handle so much. As my first LJ Andrews book, she did not disappoint! The plotline is simple and easy to follow, and Erik Bloodsinger’s obsession with revenge is absolutely captivating. When destiny intertwines with Livia, the daughter of the kingdom, it’s definitely a wild ride. ⚔️🔥

I am not well in the slightest. This was one of my favorite reads of this whole year. This love story was absolutely gorgeous and I am literally sick over it (positive connotation).

We’ve got pirates, we’ve got star crossed lovers, we’ve got a great plot…. Just absolutely amazing!

Erik is 100% going to be apart of my top book bf’s of all time, this man is thorny, hard headed, cruel, but also loving, caring and gentle. I love a fictional man who is covered in barbs from afar, and then you get a closer look and they’re all ooey-gooey, sweet hearts. I LOVE THIS MAN SO MUCH.

Livia is one of my fav FMC’s I’ve ever read about. She’s brave, smart, and open-hearted, but also can be vicious, clever and hard when she needs to be. She had incredible growth over the course of this story, and I CANNOT wait to see how she continues in book 2.

This love story is truly SO GOOD, it’s bone chilling. 10/10 recommend, a 5 star read.

Hear me out,I can tolerate a morally grey MMC but THAT'S FREAKING PITCH BLACK. I swear to God every time this man open his damned mouth I want to freaking gag. He's so vile OMG 🤢. And don't let me start with the FMC like she KNOWS BETTER she FREAKING KNOWS BETTER. HE kidnapped her, threatened to let his entire crew of men R@PE her and she's like omg he's so handsome. GIRL......GIRL ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND!!!! Maybe if someone told me it's worth continuing I'll reconsider picking it up but for now I'm out, bye 🫡

Something about the chemistry didn't feel right to me. I'm not talking about the fact that he kidnapped her, weirdly I don’t think that played into it. I'm also not talking about the fact she could have Stockholm Syndrome because he’s a hot pirate, it’s inevitable. I just think the angst was missing for me.

It had quite a slow start and honestly, I was confused why so many random pieces of information were shared all at once. The info dump that occurred was overwhelming. I like a gradual sprinkling of info at a time, this felt like a downpour ⛈️

I initially liked the FMC, she was confident and brave enough to take chances, but very naive. Most likely due to her being shielded from the world (metaphorically and literally 😅). I will say in the beginning chapters, I did enjoy reading about the bond that she and the other royal heirs shared, it was sweet.

Now the MMC was a morally grey villain, who had obsessive and possessive tendencies. I would usually be downing this MMC like a jug of sangria, but because the relationship felt so flat to me, he also felt boring (especially when you compare him to characters like Sewell, who was anything but boring).

Also, I understand he was a dominating character, but why did he have to constantly threaten the FMC with being SA’ed by the crew? It just put a bad taste in my mouth. Yes, these were empty threats, but saying she would be ‘given to the crew’ or that she would become the new ‘ship wife’ tainted him for me.

——-/——-
Unnecessary side note:- Speaking of ‘tainted’ there is a character called ‘Tait’ (which I think is pronounced Tate), but every time I read his name I would say ‘Taint’. Not the verb, the slang meaning. Honestly, I couldn't get it out of my head and it was so distracting 😅
——-/——-

I do love a pirate read, but this one just didn’t hit the way I expected it to. Despite the hype, it seemed pretty average (to me).

After DNFing at 70%, I realised this author also wrote Curse of Shadows and Thorns and let’s just say me and that book have a … strained relationship. For entirely different reasons, but maybe I just don't get on with this writing style.

This was really good! I loved Erik Bloodsinger. There is also a great cast of side characters (LOVE Sewell). I love that Livia has such a great family with parents who love her and a funny inner circle. I want Livia and Erik's inner circles to have more interaction in the next book. The romance is really well done, and there's a good plot twist at the end. I can't say I was surprised because I correctly guessed who the traitor was, but it was still exciting when it was revealed. This book ends with some tough cliffhangers for Erik and Livia.

While this was a really great fantasy romance, I'm giving this 4 stars because there were times when the writing was a bit clunky. I had a hard time following the world-building. There was also a lot of room for interpretation during some of the dialogue/big reveals. I'm still not really sure who tortured Erik as a boy, but I think you're supposed to know the truth now. Why was Erik imprisoned where Livia could read to him if he was actually invited to stay with the earth fae after saving her uncle? I was confused and continue to be. It was hard to follow or figure out what happened during the war. Also, it feels like everyone is related to everyone, and it got a bit confusing. I'm confused as to why Erik kidnapped Livia in the first place or why he wants to start a war when clearly there are larger issues going on in Ever and it seems like Livia's parents aren't really his enemy.

Nonetheless, this is a really great fae king/pirate fantasy romance. I'd recommend.

FMC: Livia (aka “Songbird”). Earth fae. Daughter of an earth king who is at war with the sea king. Full of compassion but not too soft. Can heal the earth.
MMC: Erik Bloodsinger (aka “Serpent”). Fae King of the Ever Sea. Pirate/Viking. Hard on the outside. Brutal in battle (especially when Livia is involved or in harm’s way). His blood has p o w e r. Loyal to his people (maybe to a fault).
Location: Fictional realm
POV: Dual first-person
Spice: Several open-door spicy scenes
Tropes: enemies to lovers (kind of), morally gray MMC, touch her and die, cliffhanger, forced proximity, bonds
Triggers: kidnapping, violence, coercive power dynamics, anxiety, grief (death of parent), betrayal
Representation: culture divide (sea vs. earth fae)

➼ Tales about pirates, like Pirates of the Caribbean or like a dark Peter Pan
➼ FMCs in romantasy that aren’t combative, like in Shield of Sparrows by Devney Perry, Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross, or what I'm assuming Elain's book in the ACOTAR series will be like (though Livia's not as aloof or demure as Elain has been so far)

🎯 My Thoughts:

You know when you like a book, but the narrators do NOT jive with what you are envisioning in your head and it takes you completely out of the story? That is unfortunately what happened here. But if I take away that, this book was very good. I haven’t read much about pirates or vikings and now I MUST.

The Good:
Erik Bloodsinger. END OF. He gave Rhysand meets Kingfisher meets Dorian Havilliard. So, yes, please. And as someone who’s first crush was on Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid (yes, I’m trying to play that off as a flex), I appreciated this “grown up” version of a royal Erik(c) who knows the difference between aft, port, starboard, and leeward (had to Google those terms haha). He sure is yar.

➼ I honestly LOVE an FMC in romantasy that is softer or more naïve. Livia was the heart of this story. She wasn’t weak or too demure by any means, but she was the epitome of healing that offset Erik’s dark, tortured nature.

➼ The spice wasn’t too slow, but it wasn’t immediate either. It wasn’t “let’s get it out of our systems” or “rage-spice”; it built over several scenes and emotional connections. And it wasn’t too serious or heavy.

➼ I need to find more pirate/Viking romance/romantasy. I really liked the setting and the world building felt manageable. The magic system was confusing to me, but the world and setting was refreshing.

➼ THAT PLOT TWIST. Did NOT see it coming.

The (Maybe) Not So Good:
➼ There were stretches of the story that felt boring. I’m not sure if this was due to pacing or just what I felt was filler. It also very well could have been due to my issues with the audiobook version.

➼ I also found some of the details of each character confusing. There are blood singers, sirens, tide makers, mist walkers, earth fae, sea fae…and I could not tell you what each one does.

➼ The audio version. And it’s not that the narrators were “bad,” I just couldn’t stop picturing Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth for this 20-something FMC (which came across WAY prissier than her character was) and Danny Dyer for this deeply broody MMC (and I can’t keep a straight face when Danny Dyer tries to be serious). Sigh.

Some of my favorite quotes:
╰┈➤ ❝You ruined everything, and I don’t care. Ruin me. Destroy me. As long as I have you.❞

╰┈➤ ❝You, Erik Bloodsinger, are the kind of darkness I would follow across the skies and seas.❞

╰┈➤ ❝Ah, love. You think your peace was won with gentle morals? We all have a darkness within us, and desperation to survive can reveal the cruelest pieces.❞

╰┈➤ ❝Love can be the most violent, the most powerful of weapons, Bloodsinger. Power can be taken away, but that kind of love—that lives beyond the Otherworld.❞

I got about 30% of the way into this, and even though the premise was different from other fantasy romances I've read recently ...

the combination of a Pirates of the Caribbean vibe meets Acotar Fae wasn't quite engaging enough. On to the next series to try I suppose.

NOTES:
- definitely more adult with topics like non-consensual sex discussed etc.
