Love, Holly

Rate this book
A young woman tries to heal a rift in her elderly pen pal’s family in time for Christmas, all while falling in love—and maybe even reuniting with her own family—in this dazzling romance from the author of Always, in December and One Last Gift

Sometimes it takes a stranger to bring you back to yourself.

Ever since a car accident tore her family apart, Holly has been part of a lonely-hearts holiday letter–writing club. Each December, she writes to a stranger who is also spending Christmas alone, and receives a letter from another lonely person in return.

Usually, the letters go unanswered. That’s the point—the letters are anonymous, and the senders write whatever is in their heart. But this year, the letter Holly receives is different; not only is the letter full of a grief she knows all too well, but its writer, Emma, mentions a place that Holly has visited. When she realizes that she might actually be able to find the letter’s author, Holly becomes determined to reunite Emma with the estranged grandson, Jack, with whom Emma is desperate to reconnect.

When Holly finally tracks him down, she remembers that she’s met Jack once before . . . and the connection was electric. The spark between the two of them is still there—until a misunderstanding risks their burgeoning romance and his strained relationship with Emma, too. But Holly is determined; if she can fix Emma’s family, she might also be able to fix her own. Though as it turns out, Holly might have less time to put things right than she thought.

“ Some people you know for a lifetime, but they never really make an imprint on your soul – and some people you only have to know for an instant, to know they will be a part of you forever“

Ever since a car accident split her family apart, Holly has been participating in a holiday letter–writing club called “Dear Stranger”. Each December, she writes to an anonymous stranger who is also spending Christmas alone, and receives a letter from another anonymous stranger in return.

Usually, the letters go unanswered which is the point—since the letters are anonymous so that the senders will feel comfortable writing whatever is in their heart.

But this year, the letter Holly receives is different; not only is the letter full of a grief she is familiar with, but its writer, Emma, mentions a place that Holly had visited the last year that her family was to spend Christmas together, a coffee shop a couple of hours away from where she is currently living.

It’s the last place she spent time with her sister, Lily, and also the place where she had literally bumped into a handsome stranger named Jack that she had hoped to see again, carrying out a coffee cup with his phone number on it, that she would lose before she could call.

When she realizes that she just might be able to track down Emma, if she visits the coffee shop again- she sets out on a mission to meet her-and in turn, she may find even more than she expected to.

Emily Stone lost her own mother when she was young, so she knows firsthand how hard the holidays can be for those dealing with loss, whether it’s fresh, or in the past, and she is carving out a niche of tear-jerker Holiday Romances, which deal with loss.

Her signature style seems to include stories that make several jumps in time, endure MANY misunderstandings, and include therapeutic letter writing! ✍🏻

I don’t know if the “Dear Stranger” program really exists but if it doesn’t-it should!

A very entertaining story, full of HEALING and HOPE, but you still might want a tissue handy for the very end!

I read and enjoyed both Always, in December and One Last Gift by this author so when I saw her newest book I couldn't pass it up. I guess it's become a tradition for me to read an Emily Stone book every holiday season. Love, Holly or The Christmas Letter as it's known in the UK is less a book about Christmas though as only two sections take place in December. But what it is about is family, friendships, relationships of all kinds and second chances...not just of the romantic variety.

Our three main characters, Holly, Emma and Jack, have felt a lot of loss and grief over the years and all three are trying or have tried to work through it. It is only when they all come together by chance (or is it fate) that they finally figure out how. These are well-developed characters that have fully fleshed-out background histories that explain their behaviour and decisions. They are very self-aware and learn from their mistakes. I love how Holly uses letter writing to get through her grief and help deal with loss.

I can't bump this up to four stars though. I found it repetitive in parts, there were too many coincidences and some of the plot line was very predictable. Would I read another Emily Stone holiday story next year? You betcha!

Love, Holly is a beautiful, poignant book that discusses grief, healing and fate. It also speaks of forgiveness and second chances. The holidays are such a joyous and magical time of year but we forget the people who are alone or are suffering from grief and/or depression. I appreciate how this book shines a light on those topics we don’t normally see depicted in movies/books during the Christmas season.

(Normally I would add a brief summary but don’t want to give too much away from the story.)

Things I Loved
♥️The LETTERS(I love any books with letters) it’s so intimate and gives you an old time feeling
♥️Dialogue of grief and death
♥️Glimpses of Holly and Lily from the past
♥️Found family 🥹
♥️the romance part gave me Serendipity vibes and I absolutely LOVE that movie
♥️Dual POV(however I wish other characters had a brief chapter POV)

I’m a huge believer in fate and the universe aligning people/events for the perfect moment. There are NO coincidences in life imo and this book has plenty of moments where things happened at the right time(it wasn’t overly done to me). The people we meet are brought to us for a certain reason and some people are only meant to be with us for certain seasons not forever.

Possible Triggers
-Loss of a child
-Cancer

Favorite Quotes

”It wasn’t always easy, to see yourself the way others saw you, especially in art—it was unforgiving, at times, even when the artist didn’t mean it to be so.”

”Some people you know for a lifetime, but they never really make an imprint on your soul—and some people you only have to know for an instant to know they will be part of you forever.”

”Please don’t spend too long mourning me. Miss me, occasionally—I like the idea of having someone who cared for me enough to miss me—but don’t mourn, if you can help it. I don’t want you to be like me—I don’t want you to spend your life mourning, instead of living.”
😭

Overall thoughts
If you are wanting to read a sentimental holiday read that discusses heavy topics and also has a smidge of romance this is the book for you 💚♥️

Emily Stone has wowed me yet again! This book had all the feels. Love, Hollyis heartbreaking, hopeful, full of love, loss, guilt, friendships, grief, connections, romance, self-image, and so many other things. I felt for the characters, I rooted for them, cried with them, and felt joy with them. One moment can change things in one's life. One moment can change relationships in either good or heartbreaking ways depending on what that moment is. Just like one letter can also change lives...

Holly and her pregnant sister, Lily, were involved in a horrific car accident on Christmas Eve. The accident caused great loss, guilt, anger, and pain. From that day, Holly and her sister have been estranged. At a friend's urging Holly began participating in a letter writing group that sends (and receives) letters during the holidays. Holly receives a letter and feels a connection to what a stranger (Emma) has written to her. Holly recognizes a place that is mentioned in the letter and decides to reach out, traveling to the place where a handsome man gave her his number. It was also the last place she laughed with her sister prior to the accident. Both Holly and Emma are just what the other needs even if they don't initially know it.

This was such a hard to put down book for me, so I didn't. I sat and read this throughout the course of one day. Emily Stone writes characters that I care about. She has a way of transporting me into her books as silent observer. This is dubbed as a holiday book, but it can be read year-round in my opinion. This book touches on serendipity, second chances, forgiveness, guilt, relationships, grief, healing, letting go, love, friendship, family, loneliness, and second chances.

This well written and hard to put down book takes place over the course of several years. I enjoyed how it showed how the characters changed over that time. It also showed how one moment can change so many things, how lonely people connect, how friendships are formed in unlikely ways, and how time has a way of bringing about change.

When your name is Holly, why not read a Christmas book in July? I haven’t previously read a book where the main character shares my name, so this was a fun first (even if I did want to shake her sometimes 😆). Holly the book character was an interesting mix of contradictions. She was stubborn, yet tender hearted. She wanted to help others but had no idea what to do with her own life. Now that I think about it, that also describes me at around the same age.

Even though this is a holiday-oriented read, there are some serious topics so check the triggers below. Without spoiling things- this was a touching story about forgiveness, found families, and of course a bit of romance.

Trigger warnings (some of these are spoilers):

This one is scheduled to be published on September 26 but I was lucky enough to get an ARC from Netgalley (this did not impact my review).

Happy belated book birthday 📚🥂

Each time I embark on another Emily Stone novel, I don layers upon layers of sweaters, mentally bracing myself for the powerful punches the author may deliver. However, I am acutely aware that even the sturdiest steel vest cannot shield me from the emotional turmoil that awaits, as emotional blows often inflict deeper wounds than physical ones.
This semisweet yet heartwarming book is best savored with a fine bottle of wine, accompanied by your favorite snacks or a comforting cup of tea, all while nestled on your comfiest couch. If the weather is less than favorable—much like this year's unexpected rainy and cold climate in Los Angeles—snuggling under a blanket would be an ideal accessory.

While I found the main character to be somewhat blunt and at times a touch unlikeable, her blossoming relationship with Emma became the most heartfelt aspect of the book, igniting a strong sense of empathy and making me wholeheartedly root for their characters. I often found myself wondering where the romance would emerge within the story, and thankfully, Emma's grandson, Jack, stepped in to save the day. Jack is a sensitive and caring man burdened by his own emotional struggles and the demands of his job. The sweet and genuine romance that develops between Holly and Jack is not only endearing but also remarkably plausible.

Though the relentless and somewhat intrusive meddling within the story occasionally crossed the line, veering into the realm of irritation, I still found myself rating this book higher than its predecessors, rounding up my 3.5 stars to a solid 4-star rating.

Prepare your napkins, as you will undoubtedly find yourself succumbing to moments of raw vulnerability and letting your emotions run free.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to NetGalley and Random House Publishing/Ballantine/Dell for graciously providing me with this digital reviewer copy in exchange for my honest thoughts.

4.5⭐️ After an accident leaves Holly and her sister Lily permanently estranged, Holly looks to a letter writing group to find some sense of connection and comfort during the holidays. When a connection forms between her and fellow letter writer, Emma, Holly sets out to find her with very surprising results.

Emily Stone writes the saddest, yet ultimately hopeful, books and every year, I cannot wait to dive in. This years Love, Holly is easily my favorite. With themes of loneliness, trauma guilt, overcoming grief, second chances, finding meaningful connections, and a bit of romance thrown in, this story has everything you could want in an emotional holiday read.

I always love Stone’s examination of what it means, on a visceral level, to lose those we love and the gut wrenching emotions that accompany it. While this usually gives her books more of melancholy feel, it also adds a great deal of depth that is usually lacking in your cutesy holiday reads. And no matter what topics are tackled, she always leaves readers feeling uplifted, a la Frank Capra’s It’s A Wonderful Life.

‼️There are very heavy topics addressed. Please check your content warnings if sensitive to certain triggers.

I haven’t had a book make me tear up in a long time. And this book is a tear jerker. Yes, it’s predictable, but that good kind of predictable. This book could trigger you if you lost a baby, been in a bad car accident, and/or had someone die in a car accident. I loved the characters and the story, and I really love the Dear Stranger letters idea. I will say that I was angry with Lilly, and especially the parents.y heart hurt for how they made Holly feel for something that was going to happen regardless. Their parents immediately said to give space and created a boundary where Holly didn’t feel welcome. So, I honestly didn’t like that she felt at fault for the loss of a relationship. And it brought up a lot of feelings that I have with my own sister and our lack of relationship.

I don’t like sad books, but this one hit me differently and I’m so glad I read it.

I willingly went into this knowing it was going to destroy me emotionally—and I loved every minute. Ever since an accident tore her family apart, Holly has been participating in a Dear Stranger program, writing (and receiving) an anonymous letter each December. But when a particular letter from a woman speaks to her own pain, Holly can't help but meddle and sets out to find her.

This story was one glorious, twisted game of fate. My heart was screaming in the absolutely clever ways the lives of Holly, Emma, and Jack were intertwined. Who is Jack, you may wonder? If you haven't already, skip the book synopsis and jump in for the surprise! Bound by similar circumstances, I loved how they each pushed each other through feelings of grief, loneliness, and ultimately finding forgiveness.

The romance was subtle but impactful, coming in at perfect moments to balance out the overall heaviness of the story. And it's all tied with a bow in the most bittersweet, heartwarming ending. Let me tell you, I sobbed.

This is definitely Emily Stone’s best book!!

After a Christmas Eve car crash, Holly’s life is turned upside-down. Little did she know that joining a Dear Stranger letter writing program would be just what she needs to bring a joy, happiness and fate into her life.

If you are looking for a heartwarming and emotional Christmas book that will probably make you cry both sad and happy tears, do not skip on Love, Holly. It is a story about accidents, blame and grief and finding yourself as you learn to accept and forgive. Emily Stone does a great job exploring the power of fate, which is one of my favorite themes, as well as second chances not only with love but also with family. The main characters, as well as the supporting, were multi-dimensional and complex, with flaws that felt authentic and allowed for great character growth. Also, all the letters written throughout the story melted my heart.

Read if you like:
-Raw and emotional romances
-UK setting
-Timelines that span across a year
-Stories about fate and timing
-Holiday reads
-The process of grief, acceptance and forgiveness

Thank you Random House for the ARC. Pub date 6/26!

•Emotional romance
•Contemporary fiction
•Some spice

After a tragic accident causes a rift in Holly's family, she joins an anonymous pen pal program. When she receives a letter from Emma, an elderly woman dealing with grief of her own, Holly is compelled to help, and tracks Emma down in a place all too familiar. In the process of helping Emma heal, Holly reconnects with a man from her past, and might just be able to heal her own heart in the process.

I loved this so much! It's heartfelt, tender, and so beautifully written. With themes of love and loss, healing and forgiveness, family and found family, this one ticked so many of my boxes. Its a romance at its core, but also leans heavily into contemporary fiction. And while it's being marketed as a holiday romance, it takes place throughout the year and doesn't have strong holiday vibes. Heather Long is a phenomenal narrator and performed this just brilliantly.

You won't want to miss this one!

One of my newest favorite holiday reads!

Love, Holly is the kind of book that will fill your cup while simultaneously pouring it out. It is a lovely story with themes of forgiveness, family, love, and how small choices can create huge life consequences. If you love books with found family relationships...this one is brilliant.

I loved Holly from page one as she navigates her life and how a huge accident change the trajectory of her family relationships. This push and pull of grief and loss was very touching. It's the kind of book that made me want to go hug my sisters and cling to the love we share.

Holly and Jack find and lose each other by chance, but it's fate that pulls them back together after tragedy. I loved the romantic dynamic and how they used each other to heal and seek forgiveness from the past. I was really impressed with how the author handled their romantic growth while not ignoring the emotional baggage they each carried.

This book was absolutely delightful. I cried, I swooned, I wanted to hug it because I fell in love with the characters. All in all this isn't the most Christmasy read but it captures the FEELINGS of Christmas which in all honesty might be my favorite vibe anyway.

**one fade to black scene, some strong language.

For some reason, I went into Love, Holly thinking I had previously read a book by Emily Stone, but it turns out this is my first and I feel like I need to remedy that immediately. This is only the author's third novel but between the writing and the way it hits, you would think she is a veteran at it. This novel revolves all around grief and loss, so if you're looking for a light and fluffy holiday read, this isn't going to be it. There is a touch of humor in it, but the overall vibe is very melancholy and reflective making this a tearjerker if there ever was one.

If you are looking for an audiobook rec, I would definitely say that is a great way to go with Love, Holly. Heather Long did a fabulous job as the narrator, and I honestly have no idea how she voiced this book without crying because I know I would have. There are a few surprises along the way including one that comes at the end, and I was completely in shock with each one. There is a romance in these pages as well, and I found myself hoping with all my might that families would reconcile, and Holly and Jack would end up together. The emotion in this book cannot be beat, and I have a feeling I just might listen to this again next year!

On their way home for the holidays, sisters Holly and Lily stop at a cafe/art studio to get a snack and Holly is mesmerized by a beautiful painting she sees and then bumps into Jack and spills coffee on him. They talk for a bit and he gives her his number and Holly and Lily head on their way. Soon after, they’re involved in a crash that devastates their lives and severs Holly’s relationships with her family. While feeling lonely at the holidays one year, her friend Abi encourages her to start writing letters to the Dear Strangers club, where you can reach out anonymously but still have someone to connect with. She receives a letter from an elderly lady who she feels a kinship with and soon finds that there are invisible threads tying their lives together.
Although this is a holiday read, it does cover some serious topics, but it does so with grace and kindness but you should be aware that there are some triggers: miscarriage, death, cancer.

Warning: If you are looking for a light holiday read - this isn't it. Emily Stone knows how to grab hold of your heart and give you ALL the feels: love, loss, guilt, hope, anger, forgiveness.

This is so much more than just a holiday story. It is a story of love, family and friendship. It is a story of loss, grief and healing. It is a story of anger and forgiveness. It is a story of second chances and healing. I loved it!

The story takes place over several years and we see how one moment has such lasting effects on the lives of all those that were part of it. I love how Emily wove in the magic of serendipity throughout the storyline. How moments act as tethers to people, irregardless of time, pulling them together.

If you are looking for an emotional but heartwarming holiday read - run to grab this one. I listened to the audio (thank you for the complimentary copy prhaudio) and think Heather Long did an outstanding job narrating. She easily made me feel like I was listening to a friend. The narration brought with it so much feeling, I felt emotional too.

❄️closed door

🌚Я не люблю троп right person, wrong time.

Despite its title & cover, this is not the straightforward Christmas romance one would expect.
There is such depth of character & feeling in this book, and romance, and good conversations about the difficulty of forgiving others & yourself, and also, somehow, really good plot twists? And it all worked perfectly.
Heather Long was a great audiobook reader as well, and I will definitely be reading more of Stone’s work in the future.
Highly recommend.

This was a very emotional read, which was something that I wasn't expecting but ended up really enjoying. This book is not overly Christmassy, in fact most of it takes place outside of Christmas, so for those that don't like super Christmassy books, you might enjoy this one!
