Amish of Lancaster #1

Fields of Corn

Rate this book
Shana Slater doesn't realize that her life is about to change when she pulls into the Lapp farm in Leola, Pennsylvania, to inquire about renting a small apartment over a mule shed. Yet, the price is right and the rolling fields of corn present a peaceful place for her to retreat when she is not working in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Her curiosity about the Amish way of life is piqued when she befriends Emanuel Lapp, the son of her landlord. As she learns about the Amish through his eyes, she quickly realizes that the Amish way of life is more than just religion and a plain way of living. She also discovers that the more she learns, the more she is unexpectedly falling for much more than their plain and simple lifestyle. When two worlds collide, which will survive and at what cost?

Based in part on the author's experience living on an Amish farm, Fields of Corn presents a sweet and authentic love story.

I really, really enjoyed this book. I loved the interaction of the 2 main characters in the book, and how the author shows the differences between their worlds, and both learning to accept the differences in each other while trying to fit in each others world. The love story is great, but so is the story of acceptance, and forgiveness. I highly recommend it.

Love in this relationship between an Englischer and an Amish, proved true, amid the many differences in their cultures, and religion.Learning to forgive, is not an easy thing to do, neither is letting go and moving on. A beautiful story-loved it!

Loved this book! The story didn't end with "I Do". It continued on and gave you a very good perspective of life afterwards. I experienced many emotions while reading this book from Shana's perspective... Can't wait to continue the Lapp story with the next book!

Don't laugh. I know it's a romance novel. I grabbed it thinking it was a novel about the Amish way of life.

And it is, so I'm not disappointed I read it. There is a romance theme to the book, but it's not a steamy, sexy romp that characterizes most so-called romance books today. It's the story of a gentle developing love between two very selfless young adults who learn to deal with their differences before becoming one.

But more than this, it is a description about the Amish faith and way of life. It describes how a group of people who we outsiders would view as moralistic legalists live a life that is centered on their families, their community of fellow believers and their earnest desire to walk in God's ways.

If I learned anything from this book, it is that I shouldn't shy away from a book just because of a label someone puts on it.

The only part of this book that I didn't care for was the intimacy that the author included when Shauna and her Amish groom married and spent their first night and the following morning together. It wasn't too descriptive but it's not what I'm used to from this author or when I read Amish Fiction. There was one other instance when the newly married couple where together in the barn milking the cows. Other than that I truly enjoyed this book. It took a chapter or two to get into the story but after that I was very much drawn into it.
Most of you have probably already read this book. Because of the few areas of intimacy I can't recommend it to readers of Christian Fiction. But I did enjoy the story very much.

Enjoyable Amish story. I just wish the author would've used the better grammar. If an author is not sure of how to pluralize a word, look it up. Daughter-in-laws is not correct. It should be daughters-in-law. Other grammatical mistakes with subjective and objective misuses annoyed me. May sound picky but these are details I would expect such a seasoned and prolific author to know the correct usage.

I enjoyed this book about Shana Slater. She moves into a house on Amish property while managing a
Restaurant near by. While there she and Emanuel Lapp start a friendship that blossoms into love.

This is their story.... Does Shana turn Amish or does Emanuel turn English? How do they meld the two worlds?

I had a little of a hard time following all the people in the book but that could be just me, my only real issue wasShanas parents and the part they played in is book.

Fields of Corn is not your typical Amish book. While I did enjoy parts of the story, I didn't care for it as much as other Amish books I've read in the past. I had a hard time connecting with any of the characters. The romance between the main characters seemed to progress far too quickly and quite a few things just didn't seem that realistic to me. A one-time read.

I was really surprised by this Amish themed book by Zimmerman, a new author. It sets the story from beginning (meeting) to end (marriage) and shows the adjustments & lessons learned by combining two different worlds. Zimmerman did an excellent job with this. I sure hope she writes more soon!

The hero changed part way through the book and so I enjoyed the book less and less. He became disapprovingly harsh, stiff and judgemental. Not the type of husband any woman needs Amish or not.

First -- I enjoyed this book. I find the Amish books that I enjoy always have some thought-provoking words that I always highlight. Sometimes it's a Bible verse; sometimes it's just a well written phrase that speaks to me. And occasionally I learn something new (hopefully it is accurate) about the Amish.
"...it is easy to adjust when one has no choice." [I don't think it is EASY but sometimes we need to be reminded that 'adjust we must'.]

"...a person's inner strength, their inbred values, and their entire character won't change."

"Too often, people stress the unstable qualities of a relationship rather than the constant and more important characteristics..."

"It is easy to find religion; it is salvation most seek."

So why the 4 stars..

Loss of a star for two errors that should have been caught by the editor -- and jumped off the page to me.

» In Chapter 20 Shana uses a "straight back chair" at her bedroom window to feed her baby yet it was established that her husband had made her a rocking chair & she loved to use it. Trust me -- no woman would trade out her rocking chair for a straight back chair to breast feed. And just 13-14 pages later, a rocking chair is in place again.

» Toward the end of the book "...a car crept up behind them". There was no car involved -- it had been a pickup. And just a few paragraphs later the car suddenly becomes a pickup.

While not huge errors, they should have been caught by an editor. And yes, I've edited books and the above errors are exactly the thing that can happen during several rewrites. And in this case a lost of .5 per error moved a 5 star book to 4 stars.

Note: This book was read for free under a 30-day trial of Kindle Unlimited.

Great story about an Englischer woman who falls in love with an Amish man. He has not been baptized, so he chooses to leave the Ordnung to marry her, but retains essentially the same attitudes and lifestyle, so she finds herself in a marriage where compromise is usually AWOL and she must do all the changing and accommodating, in other words, a realistic plot! I used to read a lot of bonnet romances because they were generally clean until I realized that most involved stock characters in a generic romance novel plot with a bonnet perched on top to try to hide the lack of imagination and originality. Therefore, I cannot help but really love this book written with unique, fresh, and original characters and story. What a delightful difference! I rate a book according to the degree that I find authentic or clever dialogue, three-dimensional characters who can speak, behave, and think like real human beings, more originality than a re-hashed generic plot, and no plot holes, inconsistencies, solecisms, anachronisms, or TDTL heroines within it. This novel meets all those criteria as our heroine discovers through very hard ways that adopting a lifestyle is not the same as the fundamentally deep changes that take place when a faith truly takes hold in the heart.

Fields of Corn is very enduring love story written by Sarah Price. When two very different worlds come together there is a lot to be discovered and at what cost. Shana discovers a very different side to the Amish when she rents an apartment from an Amish man and meets his son Emmanuel. As they navigate a a blooming friendship they discover there may be more than just friendship involved. As feelings start to deepen they are both faced with big decisions. Where their friendship leads them is truly a gift from God. I enjoyed this storyline and I look forward to reading the next book in this series. The characters are very likeable and realistic.

I was not given a complimentary copy of this book to read and review. I was not approached to post a favorable response and all opinions are my own. I have rated this story with five stars for meeting my expectations of a wonderful story that I can highly recommend to others.

This book was a good read. Shanna, an Englisher, falls in love and marries Emmanuel Lapp an Amish raised man. This book really goes into the details of what a transition between worlds really means. Emanuel can not join the church unless Shanna does. Shanna and her family and Emanuel's family
struggle with this couple's decision. Shanna over time transitions into the Amish world but her struggles are described with clarity. I found this a very thought provoking book. I hope the rest of this series is as good as the first book.

I was told about Amish Fiction by my Aunt/Godmother #2. I have always been fascinated by the Amish having spent summers in an area in North Central Minnesota with an Amish community surrounding it, and my grandfather only purchasing his harnesses from the local Amish.

I loved this book. I not only enjoyed the book, but learned a lot about the Amish community. I was fascinated by the interactions between the Amish and the Englishe(sp).

This has got to be one of the best stories I've read by Sarah Price about the Amish culture and how it interacts with the Englishe Community or should I say how it doesn't interact! I had a hard time putting this down, kept wanting to know what would happen next!

An Englisher comes together with an Amish family and what happens is a tremendous story!

I would recommend this to anyone that loves reading about the Amish or just loves to read about different cultures!

Maybe 2.5 stars.
This just wasn't my cup of tea. I hated Emanuel. Seriously. Asking so much from Shana and not willing to give in to anything for her?!!?! I just can't even.
This was my first and probably last book about the Amish. I love learning about new cultures but this was just too much for me to enjoy.

Englisher, Shana, moves into an apartment on the Amish Lapp farm. A transfer in her job, at a restaurant, lands her near Landcaster, PA. Emmanual Lapp starts talking and taking an interest in her. Going to various events in the area, gets them closer together. How can it ever work between them? Love Sarah Price's books!
