Name (in native language) : 高屋奈月

Natsuki Takaya (高屋 奈月 Takaya Natsuki, real name Naka Hatake) is the penname of a Japanese manga artist best-known for creating the series Fruits Basket. She was born on July 7, 1973; (Tanabata). Takaya is left-handed and once revealed that she wanted to be a mangaka since first grade, when her sister started drawing.

She was born in Shizuoka, Japan, but was raised in Tokyo, where she made her debut in 1992. She enjoys video games such as the Final Fantasy series or Sakura Wars, or working on her different manga series, such as Fruits Basket, which is the second best-selling shōjo manga ever in Japan, and the top selling shōjo manga in North America. Fruits Basket has also been adapted into a twenty-six-episode anime series.

In 2001, Takaya received a Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo manga for Fruits Basket.

According to Takaya (in a sidebar of a Fruits Basket manga volume), she enjoys drawing girls (girly ones) more than she does boys. Takaya also enjoys electronics and music, but dislikes talking about herself. Also revealed in a sidebar of Fruits Basket, Takaya broke her drawing arm (left) after Fruits Basket volume six was published. She had to go into surgery, and as a result, had put Fruits Basket on a brief hiatus. Takaya made a full recovery, but complains that her handwriting had gotten uglier, due to the surgery. During her hospital stay, she gained an interest in baseball.

🐱 This volume is Kyo! 🐱

In the third volume of Fruits Basket, the story and characters really begin to get into their groove. The illustrations, both chibi and realistic, are just perfect at capturing the feel of this story. During this installment, we follow Tohru as she attempts (and due to certain events fails) to complete her schools endurance test, makes Valentine's chocolates for her friends and all those from the Zodiac she has met, goes on a double date with Yuki, Kagura and the emotionally blackmailed Kyo, and has a nice and relaxing trip to the Sohma hot springs with Momiji, Yuki and the once again, emotionally blackmailed Kyo.

We are introduced to Haru in this volume, who brings a refreshing and very Fruits Basket-esque humour to the story. We get some insight into his past growing up as one of the 12 Zodiac, and are give another snippet into what seems to be a rather lonely childhood of Yuki's. Momiji also appears segnificantly as well, discussing the story of 'The World's Most Foolish Traveller', who was so kind he ended up giving away not only all his posesions, but all of his body until only his blindless head remained. This is used as symbolism as to whether Tohru's selflessness makes her foolish or endearing. When does someone become so kind they are just a fool? Or is it even possible to reach that point? These ideas are symbolisdd throughout this volume, as we see Tohru do countless kind things that make us question whether we should celebrate the sacfrices people make for others or see it as stupidity. Is kindness something to respect? This volume of Fruits Basket makes us question just this. I love you Tohru!

🐶 Next volume is Shigure! 🐶

*Flails* OH MY GOD!!!!!!!! HARU WAS IN THIS VOLUME AND IT EXCITES ME SOOOOOOO MUCH TO SEE HIM IN ACTION!!!! HOW I LOVE THIS MAN! BOY! COW! WHATEVER! YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!!! *Piano falls on head* Oof! @_@ ...thanks. I needed that. I got a bit too fangirly there... heh? *Ahem* Anyway, as you probably already know... I love this volume of Fruits Basket. Mostly for Haru but also because more things were revealed. Seriously, it's painful seeing how slow things get reveled in this manga but that's what makes it so good! You want to KEEP READING until the end so that way you'll be able to find out! Why do you think I've been reading them back-to-back? Because I am dying to know what's going to happen next!

I really enjoyed Takaya-sensei's humor in this volume. I mean, her humor in all the volumes is just hilarious but in this one it really just shot to the roof! I know I've said this before but I love her comments throughout the story. She's always breaking the fourth wall and I really do love seeing that. I don't think I've talked about her artwork before but I must say it's very nice. It's not the most gorgeous I've seen but I think that's what adds to the charm of it. Her art style is so simple and cute and I enjoy that so much. However, she does draw people beautifully. The way she drew Kyo in that one scene where he smiles brightly... I nearly died. He was THAT gorgeous! I was close to losing my head because I wanted to go into the manga and squeeze him to death! Or at least until he started purring~ XD

Speaking of characters... OH MY GOD!!! DID YOU SEE HOW AWESOME HARU WAS IN THIS VOLUME BECAUSE I DID AND I JUST WENT ALL MAD FOR HIM BECAUSE HE IS BEYOND SEXY AND CUTE AND WAH!!! IT PLEASES ME TO SEE HIM BE SO GUTSY! HE INSPIRES ME TO BE MORE OUT THERE! HOW CAN ANYONE NOT LOVE HIM!? ILOVEYOUHARUPLEASEMARRYMEYOUSICKFREAK!!! *Anvil falls on head* Oof... okay... @_@ ...I'm back. Well, yes. I do think Haru is a fracking awesome character!!! <--- My failed attempt at not cursing. Haru is crazy! No really... he's crazy. Split personality and whatnot. He's so sweet when "White" then so twisted when "Black," it's amusing! Personally, I like him better when he's "Black" but that's only because he's so kickass! So... I can't even properly say how much I love Haru. My words will not show how badass he is. And this is nothing. He gets even more badass as time goes on, i.e. future volumes. Seriously, read this manga so you can see how amazing this character is.

Okay... I ranted about Haru and he's not even the main character so my review is a bit out of order this time around but... I can't help it... we'll get back on track now. Okay... let's see... Tohru is still awesome/sweet/cute. Her ability to accept everyone is out of this world. I don't know how she does it but she does. Yuki reveals more about himself towards the end which is nice. Kyo... awwwwww!!! My baby Kyo! He's going through such a rough time. I want to give him big hug!!! Wait... didn't I say that already? O_o Anyhow, you might be a bit confused as to the way he acts towards something but it's simple enough to figure out that your head won't hurt much. We get introduced to a new character and she's... weird. XD I like her! Okami-san is just funny. I love how she over-reacts to EVERYTHING!!! Momiji... so adorable! Though we still don't know much about him in this volume, you get to see that he has a very keen insight. A character that we do get to see more of that we haven't really known is Shigure! Finally, right? I do love him but... there's something about him... something he's planning that we do not get to know until WAAAAAAAAAAAAY later on in the series. ACK!!! It's driving me insane not knowing what is going on! I need to read more to better understand him because I refuse to believe he's really bad. I know he's doing some questionable things but... there must be a reason to it, right? Hatori makes a cameo! Talking to Shigure and if he's not his enemy then... neither will I be! Oh, and fuck Akito. <--- Failed at keeping review clean. So we don't know him per say but... I just really can't stand him. -_-" Whatever... I'll try not to hate him too much... no promises.

Yeah... I ranted a lot in this review. I'm sorry for that... not the ranting just that I couldn't structure this into a better review! XD It's difficult writing a review for a series you love so much about characters you love so much. It's nearly impossible. For me, completely impossible but you know what I mean. XP I tried. I know for a fact my future reviews for this series is not going to get any better so... you've been warned. Just save yourself the trouble and go read this manga! It is worth your time and effort and love and money! However, I feel that I must warn you. This is published by Tokyopop and since, I'm sure you know, it's out of business, you should probably get your hands on it soon before it's OOP. I know that's what I'm going to do the moment I gets me my money (Parents buying it for me, in case you wondered). Go buy it now! It needs to be on every manga lover's bookshelf!

So cute! I adore this series! In this volume we really get to see just how kind and caring Tohru is. How she puts others' happiness before her own. She really is super sweet. Yet still naive! Shigure I was really liking but this volume I am really arching my eyebrows in his direction. He is up to something shady... Adds new intrigue as well to this series. It is starting to have a darker edge... Join Tohru and the Sohma's as they celebrate Valentines day and a spa vacation! And get some great insight from Momiji while you read!

I am hardcore shipping Tohru and Kyo and it's only VOLUME THREE. I have no shame!! (This from a previous Tohru x Yuki shipper til like the very end too) Every time they have one of their deep conversations and get to know each other better or Kyo does something really nice for Tohru, it makes my insides go all gooey <3
Something is going down with Shigure and Akito. They are conspiring to do something with the curse and it somehow involves Tohru, Yuki and Kyo. I hope to find out more in the next volume, because it was pretty vague in this one, but I was fascinated. I don't want any of my precious babies to get hurt.
I also love seeing these new characters come in such as Haru and having Momiji come back and visit. The growing relationships Tohru has with all the members of the zodiac are awesome to watch and I love seeing the other zodiac members comment about how Yuki or Kyo have changed for the better because of Tohru. <3

I loved this book! It’s such a delightful read, with warm and fluffy vibes that make it feel like the perfect escape. The addition of supernatural elements of the Chinese zodiac shapeshifters, brings a fun and unique twist to the story, adding layers of magic and intrigue. Each character feels wonderfully vibrant, and the story’s charm shines through every page.

It’s also a fantastic cure for reading slumps—you can breeze through it in a single sitting, making it both satisfying and refreshing. If you're looking for something cozy with a bit of magic to lift your mood, this book is a must-read!

That was very enjoyable! And a very fast read. Finally, things started to make sense for Tohru and us readers because there were so many mixed signals.

In my previous Fruits Basket review, I advised anyone reading to take caution. If you haven't already seen the anime (in which case you should) or read the previous volumes (in which case you should), I'd highly advise avoiding this particular review too.

...You're welcome.

So anyways, Volume 3 of Fruits Basket!

After being briefly introduced to Hatsuharu Sohma in the previous volume when Shigure makes a trip to the main house for New Years, naturally we want to know more about the guy and this volume give it to us in the opening chapter.

Hatsuharu is perceptive and younger than both; Kyo and Yuki Sohma. We find out a little about his relationship to those two which involves some comedy and some seriousness too... enveloped in comedy. Nonetheless he was an enjoyable addition and I enjoyed learning more about him.

We also got to see a perhaps more vulnerable side to Kyo in this volume. Shigure teases him to the point where he runs off and whilst he sulks, Tohru gets the feeling that there's more to why he gets upset than he gives off. It's nice to see a vulnerable Kyo so early on in the series because it gives hope of some serious character development.

We also see what Shigure gets up to and some mystery behind his relationship with Akito (the head of the Sohma House). This is by far the most interesting thing yet since this part of the plot for FB was definitely not explored in the anime due to the length of the series. (Much like the cap that Tohru has as a precious keepsake from the boy who helped her find her way when she got lost as a child).

Valentine's day also occurs and unlike in the anime, Kyo, Kagura, Tohru and Yuki go on a double date to see a movie! It was nice to see both girls interacting.
Naturally, Valentine's Day has to come hand-in-hand with White Day which after a little Google search...I found it is held one month after Valentine's Day in many of the East Asian countries.
It is a chance for the boys to give the girls gifts and yes our lovable Tohru gets to go to the hot springs with Momiji, Kyo and Yuki as her White Day gift.

The readers are then revealed to the fact that Momiji and Hatsuharu are the same age (both a year younger than Kyo and Yuki) and will be attending the same high school as them in the following term!

I had no qualms with either the art or plot. This will be my favourite series of all time for a long long time to come.

I look forward to volume 4!

Oh I adore Hatsuharu too 💗 The way he randomly challenges Kyo to a duel and then turns himself into a cow by hugging Tohru so that he can carry sick Yuki back home are just too funny. But it’s clear how much he cares for Yuki especially (well, pronouncing how he’s in love with Yuki in front of Tohru definitely helps too).

Tohru is meeting more Somas in this volume, and I love how everyone’s view on her change right away the moment they meet her. She has this really gentle vibe that calms down everyone around her, including Kyo who tends to get angry a lot.

There is a part where Yuki kind of flirts with Tohru (who wouldn’t fall in love with him if he smiles and plays with your hair 🥲💗) and before I watched the anime, I used to ship Tohru with Yuki because of these kind of moments. But knowing that Tohru and Kyo is the end game, I’m seeing these moments in a new view. Yuki is simply being Yuki; he treats Tohru gently because he’s able to be comfortable around her. And I’m noticing more of the small interactions between Kyo and Tohru that will soon develop into something deeper ❤️

I love that we are getting to meet other members of the zodiac sign while still focusing on the relationship of our central characters. These boys and their love for Tohru will be the death of me! It's so refreshing to get sweet, kind, and considerate love interests in a manga. Usually it's just the side love interest who's kind while the main guy ends up being a jerk.

I was also really touched by Momiji's foolish man analogy and its parallels to our heroine. That he recognized how hard she works for the Souma family and that its driven entirely by love for them speaks a lot to his maturity. Momiji might be a brat at other times, but I appreciated that he took the time to educate the boys on what it means to care for someone and did it with such finesse! The main highlight, though, was definitely Tohru bringing her mom's portrait to the springs! My baby's heart is just so precious and must be protected from all harm!

This volume covers chapters 13-18. 3 stars.

Continues to be readable. But still too hard for me to keep track of who is whom. I liked the trip to the Hot Springs and the hostess, though not when she when all crazy monkey. I'd like the book better if it was more detailed, more chance to see the setting. And if so much of it wasn't repetitive. And on to the next one.

Volume 3 aka HEY MOMIJI MY LOVE MY SUNSHINE MY EVERLASTING JOY IN LIFE. Also Hatsuharu...who is 15. I must keep reminding myself of that because when he goes "Black" its kind of sexy (I blame most of this on the anime, the English Voice Actor had a hot voice).

Welcome to what happens when Yuki over extends himself, Kyo doesn't QUITE understand his feels and Shigure is...:sigh:

Oh! And though we don't know WHO she is quite yet, we also meet Ritsu's mother, who runs the Sohma Inn.

So we (formally) meet Haru, who seems to have a crush on or just a lot of naughty feelings for, Yuki ("Black" Haru is more then a little suggestive about what they can do...but he makes pretty much the same offer to Tohru soo...). His normal personality is laid back, mellow and kind of spacey. His "Black" personality, which comes out whenever he's really upset (he had anger control issues as a kid and it more or less fractured his personality...), is aggressive, lewd and combative. His target? Kyo. To protect Yuki? Or something? Anyhow he's not as skilled as Kyo.

Not that it matters. Yuki collapses, Haru breaks off the fight and they all rush to Shigure's.

Meanwhile Hanajima, my hero for life, is kicking everyone's ass at cards instead of running. That my friends is how you do gym class.

Momiji shows up again to treat Tohru to a spa day at the Sohma Inn (which everyone gets invited to). Giving Tohru a shock of her life to find out he's only a year younger then her. I'm pretty sure its not a GOOD shock either. He tries to take a bath with her, sleep (literally) with her and in general is so gosh darn cute its hard for me to think he has nefarious reasons. Tohru is so MOTHERING and well. We find out why Momiju would be attracted to that kind of attention next book.

Plus some itty bitty tidbits about Yuki's ongoing issues from childhood, Kyo's ongoing issues with his feels and Shigure avoids his editor (that poor lady), is perceptive about Kyo (poor Kyo) and doggedly determined to be swarmy.

Hatsaharu's epic bike sceneis a great opening to volume 3. The fact that Yuki just stuffed negi (Leeks) into Kyo's mouth is absolutely hilarious. The dramatic and hilarious fight between Hatsaru and Kyo... It's definetaly amusing. Ahh... And the sudden encounter with Kyo's 'Love', Kagura. She's really funny and made me want to read even further to the book. Not forgetting my favourite panel: Shigure with the maid dress to 'repay' Tohru for the lovely chocolate. And Haru's comment on his gift was absolutely hilarious.

Ah, drawing that very hot picture of Kyo at the front just makes you want to pick it up when you see it in the shops or one of the booths in an anime convention. Haha~

3.5 stars - Spoilers

-Pretty good but not as enjoyable as the previous two volumes.

-Tohru was still as likeable and ditzy as ever.

-Yuki was blah. Definitely not a fan of the potential Yuki/Tohru pairing.

-Loved Kyo and Momiji. Haru was pretty good too.

-Liked the onsen tour, and the double date with Kagura/Kyo and Yuki/Tohru.

-The only thing that was disappointing was the dialogue/story didn't always flow well or make sense. — it made for frustrating reading.

-Hoping volume 4 will be a bit better.

Another great addition to this series. Again, we meet more of the family, but most importantly the subtle larger plot continues to grow and we find out who is pulling which strings. I loved this and cried during it, as seems to be normal for me during this series. I look forward to the next volume!
