Hey guys its Jessica. Sorry I’ve been MIA for so long. I apologize for the long overdue wait for Janet’s next book. You’ve all been very patient and loyal fans that she loves. She has been working on this book over the last year and a half while dealing with her battle with cancer. It saddens me to say that she peacefully lost this battle this past weekend while her family was by her side. I apologize if this feels sudden, she was a very private person even to her family. And she truly thought of all of you as her family. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the GoodReads database with this name.

Janet Chapman is the author of twenty-two contemporary and magical romance novels, all of which are set in her beautiful state of Maine. She lives in a cozy log home on a beautiful lake with her husband, surrounded by an eclectic assortment of wildlife that she finds both entertaining and inspiring. Probably best known for her Highlander Series (a saga of twelfth century warriors rebuilding their clans in modern-day Maine that now spans three generations), Janet also has two spin-off magical series (Midnight Bay & Spellbound Falls) and several contemporary family series set on the coast and in the mountains. With over three million books printed in six languages, her stories regularly appear on the New York Times and USA Today bestseller’s lists.

When she’s not writing (well, when she should to be writing but isn’t), Janet and her husband are traveling the state in their camper throughout all four seasons; hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and generally rubbing elbows with Mother Nature while always keeping an eye out for colorful new characters—human and beast—to put in her stories.

3'5 Estrellitas.

Update:
Still a great read even knowing the ending. Matt remains and arrogant ass until he loses his heart and Winter is a sweet and sassy brat that you can't help but love. ...wish I'd done this reread sooner

OMG what a fantastic story... .i couldn't stop squealing for the last 30 pages! Totally out of left field with that twist at the end. Of course full of heat, passion, love and humor as any Chapman books is, but Matt and Winter's long awaited love story was a giant leap above what even i expected. With tons of little plot twists (that really i wish i could see i saw comin' but totally didn't) and glimpses into previous characters that leave you tearing up and thinking "AWWWWWWWW", this book really deserves 6 stars but as that's not allowed... 5 HUGE< GIANT and much deserved stars for "Only witha Highlander"... cant wait for more.

I was into this book right away as the story gets rolling immediately. From the moment she sets eyes on Matt Gregor, Winter is hooked! Line and sinker..

This story is full of interesting, richly written characters. I enjoyed the verbal banter as well as the building of the tension between the two main characters and with the family members. There is humor in abundance as well as a finely crafted storyline. Several different mysteries pop up through the book and will all come together in the end to finally make sense. I hope there will be more on many of the supporting characters in the next book (or two?)..

I didn't realize at first that this was part of a series, but I am now on the hunt to get the others and read the series in order, especially now that I know there is a sequel to this book! Highly recommended reading.

This book isn't up to par with the other books in this series.

The main character, Winter, is supposedly 25 years old, the youngest of 7 girls and has lived away at college. Her parents are very strong characters who have exposed their daughters to a wide variety things in life. Her emotional maturity was more in line with a 16 - 18 year old. The story would have been better with Winter being less naive and insecure.

Yo, nuevamente he caído loca de amor y no me arrepiento. ¡No señor!

This book fulfilled my need for cheesy, unappetizing, embarrassing romance novels for the time being. I understand that this type of romance novel is firmly entrenched in our world--it's the daytime soaps of books--but is it too much to ask for decent plots/characters/romance to be integrated in them aside from in (some) chick-lit and regular fiction? Sometimes I just want to read about the road two people take to falling in love without the pretext of 'other interests' in their lives taking up lots of chapter space. But make it worth it!

First off, I haven't read any of the other books in the series leading up to this one. I was a bit confused at first, then stopped and did a quick scan of the plot summaries (and honestly the book does a lot of recap towards the middle) so that was fine. The magic of it all felt strangely placed in the book because, as a new reader, it felt plopped in rather suddenly from an otherwise innocuous first chapter.

Winter is a bland character. She's 24 and yet completely naive. She's also portrayed as this 'perfect' woman: super compassionate, great daughter/sister, protector of nature, always sweet, lady-on-the-street-but-a-freak-in-the-bed minx, and super powerful druidh to boot. Gag. Also, she must be protected from everything in life by all the big strong men around her because she's just a fragile female. Matt (our love interest) is constantly picking her up in his beefy hands because she's too tiny to climb onto horses and into trucks herself.

The kicker came for me when, on what was her second day of knowing Matt, he lifts her into his truck then proceeds to buckle her into her seat. Is she a toddler? Is she a paraplegic? Broken arms? Why the hell was this added in the story? Winter, who up until now has been trying to act all 'I am a strong women who won't fall for your hotness' doesn't think this is ridiculous in the slightest. I felt like I was reading Twilight for a second because I'm pretty sure this happens in that crap book, too.

Look, hold the door open for me, hold my hand over puddles, whatever, but this is taking chivalry just a tad too far. The book, for me, just got worse from there.

I know these books aren't on the same level, but my first introduction to the 'Scotland Highlander' archetype was Outlander by Diana Galbaldon (which I loved). Claire was a 'modern' day woman with an 18th century Scotsman, Jamie. He tried to pull the 'over-protecting the little woman' thing at times, but she always pushed back. When she did take his protection, it never felt like it was because she was so incapable of defending herself, but she loved him and, well, he was a warrior. She was still a fully-realized adult and character who got out of other messes by herself. That is what is missing in this book.

I liked the twist with Talking Tom, but the ending with the pinetree whining and magic-stuff bored me, and I skipped quite a bit. It seemed like a whole of fuss throughout the book for no reason since

Well. Great book, but I am really getting annoyed with the out of the blue "Oh I am in love with him and would die for him" from who knows where. No building, just there. However, it was a great read! Love this series. I also love the fact when I read one of these it says present time, and the next present time book is 50 years later! Gotta love it!

Sooo... Winter, the seventh daughter of the seventh daughter of the seventh son, meets a hottie highlander who happens to walk into her gallery. She is going to be druidh. Something is up with him, can't say what. THEN, more things are up, and a big mess to fix & parents to schmooze. Just a cute story. Everything is a spoiler.

*** Read in order if you can, but it doesn't ruin it if you read out of order.

I need to make time to review this book and series properly. I adored both!!! This is my favorite from the series. after reading these books I added "fantasy" to my list of favorite genres.

I must at least say this book aced the features I most look for in a novel:
Originality/non-predictability
Credibility in characters: (I should 'feel them'. Their emotions and reactions as well as the plot must fit the person. I should forget its fiction.
Pace: Don't put me to sleep waiting for something to happen.
Anticipation: I like to be on the edge of my seat tempted to skip pages to end my suspenseful misery. (I seldom read thrillers. I like all my books to hold my interest.)

I totally fell in love with Matt... and his real identity was a surprise for me. And Winter is very lucky to have him.
I would liked to have them both kill the druid but heck we cannot have everything LOL

the 4 stars are because of Tom... I didn't like it the ending so much.

Onto the next one!

Too bad there are only five stars because this book deserves so much more. The passion and love in this book for family and tradition is so strong that you will find yourself smiling as you read. The seventh daughter of the seventh child (supposed to be son but was a daughter) was destined to be a wizard but is that what Winter really wanted. She was passionate about everything and right before her twenty-fifth birthday (which was the same day as her six sisters) she was told by her parents that she had a destiny if she wanted it but they also told her that she would have to choose between her destiny and a husband and family. By this time she had met Matt Gregor and had fallen hopelessly in love. This is a wonderful story about her and Matt's journey through this test and how they overcame the hardship. Greatest read.

We skip ahead from Book 4 (Robbie's story) to Winter's story... We know from Book 1 that Daar (Pendaar) needed to bring Greyland MacKeage forward in time from the 13th century so that he could find his true "mate" in Grace Sutter. Daar knows that their 7th daughter (all daughters born around the winter solstice) is to be his druid replacement -- that he is to teach her how to use her magic to keep their clans alive and healthy. But Daar has always maintained that Winter won't come into her powers until she's an old woman of at least 70.

Background: Grace Sutter, Winter's mom, is from a large family born all around the summer solstice. She was "supposed to be" the 7th son of the 7th son, except she was, of course, born a girl. Her sister is Mary Sutton, Robbie's mom who shortly after he was born; Mary is also a Guardian, and her soul now lives in the a snowy owl that follows Robbie and the MacKeages and MacBains around on TarStone mountain. Robbie MacBain is the "official" Guardian over the MacBains and the MacKeages. In Book 4, he had to go back to the 13th century to get the taproot from the Tree of Life guarded by Curam de Bain, a "young" wizard (in comparison to Daar) who is Daar's rival; Curam is supposed to be very cunning. Curam and Daar were both "fighting" over the heritage of the next druid heir, although *why* they should have to fight or manipulate the blood lines was never made clear. Daar needed the taproot to replace his book of spells needed to make permanent the spell that brought back Greyland MacKeage and 3 others (including Robbie's father, Michael MacBain) forward in time; without this "book", Grey and the others will be hurled back through time and space into their own time, ripping the families, and who knows what else, apart. Since Daar's original, most powerful staff was broken in two in Book 1, he's been training a newer staff, which blew up his cabin and his own book of spells. Robbie did locate the taproot and Daar did make the time travel spell permanent, but by taking Curam's taproot, Robbie destroyed Curam's Tree of Life - thus his source of power and spells. (Or so we've been told.)

So... in this book, Daar finds that the "new" Tree of Life growing from the stolen taproot is dying. Some disturbance has affected all living Trees of Life for all living druids; the trees are fighting the disturbance, which is draining them of their magic, power, and lives. Daar tells Grey and Grace that Winter must assume her druid role now; she's the only hope to restore the balance of power. But for Winter to take on her druid role, she'll have to give up a husband and children, because husbands are only in the way, and having children will take away her powers.

Except that no one's told Winter anything about her "role" or what the rules are. She's become a successful artist who primarily paints scenes of nature that are both whimsical and a little other-worldy spiritual. Her gallery is doing well selling her works, as well as those of Talking Tom, a 70-something year old man who appeared about 2 years ago and who carves figurines of nature, often crows. Tom is quite secretive about who he is and his story, but he's a good friend to Winter and to most of the folk in Pine Creek.

Into Winter's gallery comes Matheson Gregor, or Matt -- a wealthy, successful businessman who's company manufactures private jets with fighter pilot mach speed. Matt purchases 2 of Winter's paintings immediately and commissions her to help him choose the site of his new home and create renderings to show what the house looks like, drawings that architects will use to create the home. Oh, and 2 years ago, he purchased Bear Mountain, next door to TarStone Mountain. AND Matheson means "son of bear" in Gaelic, while Gregor is Scots.

Matt also clearly has designs on Winter, herself. But just why is he so anxious to make Winter his own? What does he know about her powers? What does he know about Gesader, the black panther that Robbie brought back from the 13th century as a cub and gave to Winter as a pet? Only the family knows about Gesader (Gaelic for "enchanter"); everyone else thinks the black panther is just a myth.

Winter is falling fast for Matt. But will she choose love and family over her druid powers? Must she choose? And can she save the Trees of Life or is it the End of the World for mankind? And who the heck is Talking Tom, and why does he seem to have such a vested interest in all these goings on?
-------------------
I liked the light banter of old-fashioned romance between Winter and Matt in this book. I enjoyed allowing the story to enfold, and I wasn't as tempted to read ahead. It was nice to see major chemistry without the two people jumping into bed at the first opportunity, as has happened time and time again in the earlier books. It was fun to learn more about the MacKeage girls - who they are, what they've become, and how close they are. And I really liked knowing that Grey and Grace still have a close, loving, sexy relationship!

A lot happens in this book, and at times, the various parts feel disconnected from the whole. But the pieces do come together... maybe a bit too neatly at the end?

Fun read. Good bringing together of all the events up 'til now in the series in this book. Glad to know that stubborn women like Winter can find a way around the "rules" and figure out how to have it all.

This novel is not nearly as good as the others in the series and the ending is both abrupt and slightly confusing. At least one major issue is not satisfactorily resolved and this was quite disappointing.

Given the build-up to this installment, I was expecting a lot more from this novel and it did not come close to meeting its potential. Overall, a shallow story where the characters all lacked depth

Terrific

I loved Gaseader. The dream sequences were interesting. The big reveal - there were several actually - well timed. The characters fascinating. The storyline solid. I would definitely read the books in order. Make sure to start with the correct series sequence. There are 3 series within this 'world'. The characters are all interelated. The stories and series' will flow much better if read in the proper order, though they can be read independently.

This book is about the oldest McKeage Daughter Winter. She's the one all this basically started for way back in the 12th century. There are some surprises in this bookAnd some of the characters you start not rooting for and then rooting for again. It's a good go

Love this series

The seventh daughter, Winter, finally gets her story. Also, the druidh everyone was afraid of in previous books comes to light. This is such a fun story and a culmination of one of the early story arcs. Wonderful.
