Margaret Peterson Haddix grew up on a farm near Washington Court House, Ohio. She graduated from Miami University (of Ohio) with degrees in English/journalism, English/creative writing and history. Before her first book was published, she worked as a newspaper copy editor in Fort Wayne, Indiana; a newspaper reporter in Indianapolis; and a community college instructor and freelance writer in Danville, Illinois.

I read this book in one sitting, and while I found it to be a generally enjoyable story, I think it definitely could have been better.

First of all, not a lot happens - we see a lot of Bethany just sitting in the house thinking. And while some pondering on the part of the main character is to be expected, that's almost all this book was. Something would happen and then Bethany would think about it, and then something else would happen and she would think about that. Her thoughts were interesting, of course, but not particularly exciting, and a bit more action would have been nice (remember, this book is supposed to be an "exhilarating thriller").

I also had some issues with the end. The pacing was okay most of the time, as they slowly revealed more and more of Bethany's true identity, but then suddenly it just... ended, and the author decided to cram the rest of the important details into the epilogue like a child cramming toys under the bed. It would have been far more interesting had other things actually, you know, happened that might've revealed such information instead of just saying, "Epilogue time!" and having done with it.

The character development left a bit to be desired, as well. Dalton Van Dyne might have been a fascinating character had the author bothered to give him any development whatsoever. Instead, he got about ten pages of screen time and a random article (which hinted to me that the author was simply too bored to actually develop the character, and decided to use a cheap trick - like having someone write an article about him that the main character can then find - instead).

All this aside, the book wasn't bad. It provoked thought - what would you do if you were in Bethany's situation? - and was sufficiently intriguing. The characters (aside from Van Dyne) were all very fleshed out and three-dimensional. It kept me turning pages, at least. I hardly think it constitutes an "exhilarating thriller" by any stretch of the imagination, but it was good and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quick, enjoyable read.

Bethany's parents have acted weird for as long as she can remember - making sure she's never alone, not allowing her to attend sleepovers, and generally being overprotective. What do they possibly think could happen to her?

These actions pale in comparison to the way her parents begin to act around Bethany's thirteenth birthday. Her mother is constantly crying, for starters, and nothing Bethany says or does seems to help. This comes to a head when her parents whisk her off on a car ride to stay with an aunt she never knew she had. Her parents disappear, leaving behind unanswered questions and no number at which to contact them.

Myrlie Walker, Bethany's aunt, finally tells her that Bethany is not an only child - her parents had another daughter - Elizabeth - who died over twenty years ago. Suddenly, Bethany realizes why people in town are staring at her as though they've seen a ghost: Bethany isn't just Elizabeth's sister - she's her clone.

Haddix whisks the reader away into this page-turner, following Bethany as she struggles to come to terms with who she is, find her parents, and solve the mystery once and for all.

This book was terrifying and exciting all at the same time. I love reading thrillers, and although this one was a little tame, it had a wonderfully intricate plot and a heartstopping twist that will keep you reading until the end.

This book was AMAZING!! I would totally recomend it to people who like mysteries.
A few weeks until her birthday, Bethany's parents start acting strange. Her mom won't stop crying and this goes on until her father hurries everyone into the car and drives from state to state. They finally reach her Aunt Myrile's house, who she didn't know existed, and leave her there. They don't come back. Her only clue of what's going on is something she overheard her dad say: "She doesn't know anything about Elizabeth". Aunt Myrile finally tells Bethany that Elizabeth is her sister, who died in a horrible car accident almost twenty years ago. But when Bethany finds some old video tapes of Elizabeth, she looks almost exactly like her. How much does Aunt Myrlie know about Elizabeth?

Η συγγραφέας επιδέξια χειρίζεται το μυστήριο χωρίς να καταντάει κουραστική κι ενοχλητική, ενώ σχεδόν πείθει ως έφηβη, παρότι ορισμένα άλματα εκλογικεύσεων και ενήλικοι συναισθηματισμοί συγκριτικών καταστάσεων μοιάζουν υπερβολικοί για ένα δωδεκάχρονο και σε όλη αυτή τη διαδρομή, όπως κάθε άνθρωπος που μεγάλωσε με Χόλυγουντ, παρότι συνήθως δεν ψάχνω να βρω ποιος και τι, είχα τσιγκλιστεί τόσο, ώστε να περιφέρομαι ανάμεσα σε σενάρια για τη Ντόλυ, τη μετεμψύχωση, το μωρό της Ρόζμαρι, ξανά μια σκέψη για ούφο.

Ωραίο μυστηριάκι για Σαββατόβραδο, έστω κι αν μάλλον απευθύνεται σε εφήβους. Τουλάχιστον εκτός από κάτι που λέγεται Ράγκρατς και το Μπομπ Σφουγγαράκη, κάπου εμφανίζεται και το Μικρό μου Πόνυ και μάλιστα σε βιντεοκασέτα κι αισθάνομαι λίγο πιο άνετα, μέσα στα οχτακόσια μου χρόνια.

Λίγο μετά τη σελ 100 συνειδητοποίησα ότι η συγγραφέας κρατούσε στα χέρια της ήδη ένα θέμα πολύ δυνατό και αρκετό ταλεντάκι, να το διαχειριστεί και να φτιάξει ένα κοινωνικά ευαίσθητο βιβλίο, ικανό ν’ αγγίξει χορδές των εφήβων. Σε αυτό το σημείο, σκέφτηκα τη λέξη, ‘’δυστυχώς’’, επειδή επέλεξε κάτι εντελώς διαφορετικό. Πραγματικά λυπήθηκα, γιατί οι συγγραφείς που μπορούν να χειριστούν το φάσμα της απώλειας και των σιωπηλών στιχομυθιών και μυστικών, χωρίς να πελαγώσουν ανάμεσα στην ηλιθιώδη κοινοτυπία και τα φτηνιάρικα πληθωρικά συναισθηματικά λεξίδια, είναι ελάχιστοι και η Χέντιξ αν ήθελε, θα μπορούσε να ανήκει σε αυτούς. Μετά τη σελ 150 που σιγουρεύτηκα για τη στροφή, στενοχωρήθηκα ξανά.

Παρόλ’ αυτά και πέρα απ’ το κοινότοπο θέμα, η συγγραφέας παραμένει απολαυστική και διορατική αφηγήτρια, αποφεύγοντας μέσα στο κοινότυπο πλαίσιο, την παράδοση στην κοινοτυπία, μέσω ανισοεπίπεδων συνδυασμών κι οι χαρακτήρες έχουν υπόσταση, τα συναισθήματα τους αληθοφάνεια και ρυθμό κι οι διάλογοι είναι φυσιολογικοί. Αν μόνο το βιβλίο είχε μείνει σε ζητήματα που άπτονται της γονεϊκής ηθικής, των συγκρίσεων, ακόμη και των ξαναφορεμένων ρούχων και χαμηλών ή υψηλών προσδοκιών.

Το αγόρασα κάτω από 1,50€, άξιζε παραπάνω και πέρασα αρκετά καλά. Ακόμη και με τη στροφή που κάνει, το γεγονός ότι έστω και ξώφαλτσα θίγει κάποια ζητήματα, εξηγεί εν μέρει γιατί πουλιέται τόσο φτηνά και γιατί δεν πούλησε, σε μια γενιά που γαλουχήθηκε αποκλειστικά με μάγους, τέρατα και σειρές.

I feel like if I had read this when I was like 10, I probably would have different feelings about it, but alas, that's not the case. I was incredibly BORED throughout this whole book. I had already figured everything out right after Bethany got to Sandersfield, so there really was no suspense for me, and at the end, I actually thought the explanations and everything was just kind of stupid. Also, unrealistic... If that was the bombshell dropped, there would be no peace for any of them and there would be lab testing out the wazzoo... but nope... it was like nothing ever happened to begin with. I just felt like this could have been done WAY BETTER with a lot more development in the story and characters. Every time something happened, we'd spend the next 10-20 pages going through Bethany's thoughts on the whole thing... that was basically the whole book. All of the exciting stuff (if you want to call it that) happened at the very end, and by then, I was so over it all, that I really didn't care.

Again, I think if I was 10, this probably would have been different for me... which is why I gave it 2 stars instead of one... that extra star is my own guess that I probably really would have enjoyed this if I was a clueless kid with limited reading experience, but since I am not, I didn't really like it all that much.

For almost thirteen-year-old Bethany, life has suddenly and unexplicably taken a strange turn. For a girl who has never spent a night away from her parents, she's suddenly hustled into the car by her sad-looking father, subjected to listening to her sobbing mother, and unceremoniously dropped off in the middle of the night in a town she's never heard of, at the home of a woman claiming to be her Aunt Myrlie. Her parents are a lot older than her friend's parents, and Bethany is sure that her parent's siblings are all dead. So who is this woman claiming to be her Aunt, and why has she never heard of her before? Why won't her mother stop crying? Why does her dad seem so eager to get away from the house in Sanderfield? And who the heck is Elizabeth, the name she overheard her father and Myrlie discussing?

All these questions and more are only the tip of the iceberg in Margaret Peterson Haddix's newest novel, a wonderful young adult thriller that I thoroughly enjoyed. The twists and turns are unpredictable and unexpected--the conclusion one I never saw coming.

Overall, a great suspensful read for teens and adults alike!

this book had a lot to do with idenitity and who a individual was. there were moments in the book where i felt creepyed out. the protaganist is a girl who loves to swim and do another activties. her parents decide to let her live with her aunt because someone is purpsuing them. the protagainst slow finds out about who she is was a lie. Her parents past is so fulled with corrupt and everyone don't want to tell her the truth. in the middle of the book, she finds out that she had a sister whom died before she was born. but the other side to this was that she is her sister's clone. she has trouble with undertanding this and she tries to dig deeper into the past. the irony thing is that the protaganist love to swim but her sister did not like to swim. where as they like almost the same food. her parents culd not bare loseing their only child, that is why they cloned her. if that was me i would feel really hurt and upset. but i feel if they love her just as much as their other child, that might make up for it.

Bethany, a modest and scared twelve year old girl, is not an ordinary person; she has an identity she can't get from other people that look at her with sorrow, having crying and worried parents that don't explain anything about their moving and left somewhere where she doesn't feel safe. Everyone assumes she's a ghost, especially people who live 20 years ago who stayed at the same place and stare at her as if they've just seen a ghost but can't really tell if she's human. But Bethany has learned to overcome and cooperate with where she is and how people view her. As the book progresses she becomes more familiar with why she was left where she is but you'll have to read to find out what happens...
Imagine being an exact same twin as someone else. This is Bethany's life flipped upside down like a pizza without flavor or like a ferris wheel. This book is enough to coax you to believe something else then what your first impressions were. It impresses reader with an enhancement of beauty and it's richness of continuous events and mysteries needed to be solved. Magaret not only wants you to experience how you reveal yourself or how people view you but how important identity is to all of us. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fantasy or wants to learn how dangerous identity can be.
I vigorously enjoyed reading this juicy book. Before I started reading I thought wow a book about 2 different identities in a person...great... but it turns out that this book is impossible to put down with it's many mysteries. Margaret is an adept and a wonderful author who can make you see the world differently. It leaves readers with an identity of a character that is horrifying and haunting that's vital to not forget. It also leaves readers with many questions such as "Who am I really?" or "What's my true identity?" Go to the nearest shop and pick up this book!

Bethany thinks that she is an only child and normal like everyone else. The only problem is- she’s not. Weird things have happened before her big trip. Her mother is crying all the time and her father is following her everywhere she goes. She wonders, “What is happening?” Suddenly, in one day that all changes. Her parents drop her off at her Aunt Myrile’s house. She didn't even know she had an aunt! Her parents say that she will be safer there and no one will be able to find her. Bethany wonders-who? She feels like something bad is happening and she wants it all to stop. Then her aunt Myrile tells her news that she had never heard before. She has a twin sister and was born in four different places at the same time. Her cousin Joss tells Bethany about what it was like having Elizabeth around. Joss also tells her about what happened to Elizabeth. Everything that happened to her twin sister Elizabeth has happened to Bethany .So is Bethany really human?

I really recommend this book. It is like a thriller and mystery combined as one. She writes so you don’t feel like an observer, nor do you feel like Bethany. You feel like someone on the street knowing everything that is going on. You feel like a person on the street observing.
I couldn’t really relate to Bethany, so it was nice that way. It’s nice sometimes to read books about other people’s lives and see what going on. If you like to relate to a character in this book, I do not recommend this book to you. I recommend this book to people who love suspense and mysteries. It isn’t like Nancy Drew with detectives; it’s like a personal mystery with Bethany and herself.
I rated this book 5 stars because it was very suspenseful and different than most of the books I read. I usually can relate to the character, but this one I couldn’t. I hope that I can read more of her books during the year.

Good, fun, compelling read. I would recommend as well-written juvie lit. Anything I said about the plot would ruin all the fun of reading it.

I had a little trouble imagining all of the reactions as coming from a 12-almost 13 year old, being that I actually have one living in my house and teach a dozen more, but maybe I'm not giving enough credit for what trauma would do, or maybe I'm forgetting the complicated inner life of an almost-teen.

I was also a little surprised at the 3-4 typos in the story. I always find that kind of thing so distracting. Come on, Simon and Schuster!

Δεν είναι ότι δεν μπορώ να εκφράσω αυτά που σκέφτομαι, να περιγράψω τα συναισθήματα που μου προκάλεσε ή να μεταφέρω την ουσία του. Το πρόβλημα έγκειται στο πόσα μπορώ να συγκαλύψω έτσι ώστε να μην 'κάψω' την υπόθεση πριν καν μπει κάποιος στην διαδικασία ανάγνωσης. Ένα από αυτά τα βιβλία είναι και η "Διπλή Ταυτότητα", δια χειρός Margaret Peterson Haddix, μια συγγραφέας με αρκετές διακρίσεις στον χώρο της νεανικής λογοτεχνίας η οποία έχει δείξει ιδιαίτερα καλά δείγματα, ακόμα και σε περιπτώσεις όπως η συγκεκριμένη που από τις πρώτες κι όλας σελίδες του βιβλίου, έχεις μια πολύ συγκεκριμένη εικόνα για το τι συμβαίνει, έστω κι αν δεν έχεις την βεβαιότητα για το τι και με τι σειρά θα συμβεί.

Έχουμε λοιπόν να αντιμετωπίσουμε την Μέρεντιθ, ένα κορίτσι που λίγο πριν κλείσει τα δεκατρία του χρόνια, εγκαταλείπεται, χωρίς καμία απολύτως εξήγηση, από τους υπερπροστατευτικούς γονείς της στο σπίτι μιας θείας την ύπαρξη της οποίας και αγνοούσε. Παράλληλα, ανακαλύπτει ότι μοιάζει εξαιρετικά με ένα άλλο κορίτσι, την Ελίζαμπεθ, η οποία όμως έχει πεθάνει πολλά-πολλά χρόνια πριν από την γέννησή της. Η Μέρεντιθ λοιπόν έχει να ανακαλύψει τα εξής: Πρώτον και κύριον, τον λόγο που οδήγησε τους γονείς της στο να πάρουν την απόφαση να την αποχωριστούν όταν μέχρι πρότινος δεν την άφηναν στιγμή από τα μάτια και την προστασία τους. Δεύτερον, το κρυφό παρελθόν των γονιών της, για το οποίο φαίνεται πως τελικά δεν γνωρίζει τίποτα και που είναι γεμάτο σκοτεινά μυστικά. Τρίτον, ποια είναι η μυστηριώδης Ελίζαμπεθ και πολύ περισσότερο, τι είναι αυτό που την συνδέει μαζί της, κάνοντας την ομοιότητά τους τόσο τρομακτική.

Η ιστορία παίζει σε τρία διαφορετικά ταμπλό. Το ένα από αυτά, είναι εκείνο των οικογενειακών σχέσεων, πόσο δυνατές μπορούν να είναι αυτές, πόση εξάρτηση μπορεί να έχει το κάθε μέλος από κάποιο άλλο και πως η ανάγκη μας να δείξουμε την αγάπη και να προστατεύσουμε τον άλλον μπορεί να γίνει μια καταπιεστική και κυρίως, ψυχαναγκαστική για εμάς τους ίδιους. Το δεύτερο έχει να κάνει με τον θάνατο και κατά πόσο οι άνθρωποι είμαστε έτοιμοι να τον αντιμετωπίσουμε όταν έρθει στον δρόμο μας, κατά πόσο μπορούμε να συμβιβαστούμε μαζί του και όσο κι αν αυτός μας πληγώνει, να συνεχίζουμε να ζούμε με την θύμηση των αγαπημένων μας προσώπων, αφήνοντας πίσω μας τα συντρίμμια που άφησε ο χαμός του. Τέλος, έχουμε να κάνουμε με την επιστήμη, τις δυνατότητές της αλλά κυρίως, τους φραγμούς που αυτή έχει και κατά πόσο θα έπρεπε να τους ξεπερνάμε, εξελίσσοντάς την, παραβιάζοντας ωστόσο την ανθρώπινη φύση και γιατί όχι, τις ίδιες της βουλές του Θεού.

Η συγγραφέας αναπτύσσει την ιστορία της με γρήγορους και καθηλωτικούς ρυθμούς. Θυμίζει θρίλερ επιστημονικής φαντασίας το οποίο συνοδεύεται με αρκετά ισορροπημένες δόσεις δράσης, δεδομένου ότι απευθύνεται κατά κύριο και πρώτο λόγο σε άτομα νεαρής ηλικίας. Η ατμόσφαιρα η οποία χτίζει είναι ιδιαίτερα σκοτεινή, προκαλώντας αρκετές στιγμές, ένα αίσθημα κλειστοφοβίας θα λέγαμε, ακόμα και αγχωτικού πανικού. Ωστόσο, προς το τέλος του βιβλίου φαίνεται πως ο ειρμός της χάνεται και η συγκέντρωσή της αποσπάται καθώς μας δημιουργείται η αίσθηση ότι οδηγούμαστε στο φινάλε με τρόπο βιαστικό ενώ θα περιμέναμε μια σημαντική έκπληξη να μας φτάσει στην κορύφωση τους δράματος. Πιο απλά, δημιουργείται μια αίσθηση προχειρότητας και άνευ λόγου βιασύνης η οποία δυστυχώς αποδυναμώνει την τελική αίσθηση που το μυθιστόρημα καταφέρνει να αφήσει.

Η "Διπλή Ταυτότητα" διακατέχεται από αρκετά μεγάλο σασπένς και αγωνία, στοιχεία που κάνουν την ανάγνωσή της εύκολη, γρήγορη κι ευχάριστη, παρά το γεγονός ότι από πολύ νωρίς υποψιαζόμαστε τι περίπου έχει συμβεί ώστε να φτάσει η κατάσταση στο σημείο όπου ξεκινήσαμε να την παρακολουθούμε. Η Μπέθανι είναι μια συμπαθέστατη ηρωίδα, με το πολύ νεαρό της ηλικίας της να παίζει καταλυτικό ρόλο στο να την συμπαθήσουμε και πολύ περισσότερο, να συμπάσχουμε μαζί της αλλά και με το προσωπικό της δράμα. Αν το φινάλε ήταν διαφορετικό, τότε θα μπορούσαμε να μιλάμε για ένα πάρα πολύ καλό και όχι απλώς για ένα καλό βιβλίο. Ελπίζω ότι στο μέλλον, αν κι εφόσον τύχει να ξανασυναντήσω κάποιο βιβλίο της συγγραφέως, δεν θα έχει παρασυρθεί από την αγωνία του να δώσει ένα τέλος, όποιο κι αν είναι αυτό, καταφεύγοντας σε ευκολίες.

The book, "Double Identity", is told by a 12 year old girl named Bethany. Bethany thinks she is an average girl with two parents, and gets anything she wants. She loves to swim and come up with big words that no one will understand. Not everything is as normal as it seems to the outside world. Bethany’s Mom, Hillary cries every single day and Bethany has no idea why. Everything changes when one day her parents put her in the car and drive for hours. They drop her off at her Aunt Myrlie’s house, an aunt she didn’t even know existed. They leave her there and don’t tell her where they’re going, or why. Bethany is not allowed to call and is to stay by her Aunt’s side at all times. Soon Bethany comes to find out why everyone in Saunderfield, Illinois looks at her so differently and that she is in fact, not an original like everyone else in the world is.

Bethany is 12 years old and definitely acts like she’s 16. She thinks she needs to be apart of everything that is going on that no one should treat her like she’s just a child. There are a few times that she does act like one, like when she throws a tantrum that she wants her parents back. Aunt Myrlie is just a normal older woman. She’s a kindergarten teacher with one daughter and a dead husband. Elizabeth is Bethany’s sister. Although she may be dead, she is still a very important part of the story and as you read you will learn I don’t need to share a lot about Elizabeth because anything I have told you about Bethany, sums up Elizabeth.

The setting of the story mostly takes place in Saunderfield, Illinois.This is very important because this is where Bethany’s parents grew up and also raised Elizabeth. The setting of this story is everything about the story because none of the pieces would have fell together if it did not take place here.

I think the theme in this story is to show that there are a lot of things in this world that are unknown. Things from people's past that we would never guess happened.

I recommend this book to anyone who likes a good mystery. It will really make you think about the possibilities of the outcome. This book is suitable for 7th graders and above.

4.5 stars because I can't agree Biblically with Joss being a female minister, but otherwise I loved it. I intended to just read a few chapters last night. Yeah, that happened. Not. Just a tip, don't start a Haddix book at 11:00 at night. It's a weird book, but weird in a very interesting way. And even though I had a major spoiler (I swear it was an accident!), it was still gripping. So much about identity and family secrets and ethics and how you're more than just your DNA. And I don't want to know how late I was up last night.

So good! My teacher read it to my class and l loved it. It is one of those edge of your seat kind of books! I highly recommend it!!! It is now one of my favorite books. A mystery that enchants you with many interesting things.ONE WORD FOR THIS BOOK: AMAZING!!!!

Η Μπέθανι Κόουλ ζει μαζί με τους υπερπροστατευτικούς γονείς της που την προσέχουν λες και είναι φτιαγμένη από γυαλί και μπορεί οποιαδήποτε στιγμή να σπάσει. Είναι δώδεκα χρονών, πηγαίνει στις πρώτες τάξεις του γυμνασίου, δεν έχει κολλητούς φίλους και λατρεύει το κολύμπι ενώ σε μία εβδομάδα θα γιορτάσει τα δέκατα τρίτα γενέθλια της. Μια μέρα που φαίνονταν σαν όλες τις άλλες οι γονείς χωρίς να εξηγήσουν τίποτα την αναγκάζουν να μπει στο αυτοκίνητό τους, παίρνουν μαζί τους λίγα ρούχα και φεύγουν μακριά από το σπίτι τους και την πόλη όπου ζουν! Η μητέρα της δεν σταματά να κλαίει, ο πατέρας της το μόνο που κάνει είναι να οδηγεί χωρίς σταματημό και να έχει μια ανήσυχη έκφραση στο πρόσωπό του ενώ κάθε φορά που η Μπέθανι από το πίσω κάθισμα προσπαθεί να τους μιλήσει για να καταλάβει τί συμβαίνει το μόνο που λαμβάνει ως απάντηση είναι τη σιωπή τους και αυστηρά βλέμματα. Είναι αργά το βράδυ όταν το αυτοκίνητο σταματά στην πόλη Σάντερφιλ σε ένα μικρό σκοτεινό σπιτάκι με αυλή όπου ο πατέρας της συναντά την ιδιοκτήτριά του. Είναι μια μεγάλη κυρία που κουβεντιάζει για λίγο σιωπηλά μαζί του ενώ όταν εκείνος ζητά από τη Μπέθανι να έρθει κοντά του της τη συστήνει ως θεία Μίρλι, αδερφή της Χίλαρι μητέρας της Μπέθανι. Η Μίρλι κοιτά τη μικρή με έκπληκτο βλέμμα ενώ εκείνη αναρωτιέται γιατί ποτέ δεν της την είχαν γνωρίσει μέχρι τώρα. Ο πατέρας της μετά τις συστάσεις της λέει πως από εδώ και πέρα θα μείνει μαζί της αφού εκείνος πρέπει να φύγει με τη μητέρα της για να την φροντίσει. Η Μπέθανι διαμαρτύρεται και του λέει ότι θα τους ακολουθήσει αλλά εκείνος τη σταματά και με αυστηρό ύφος της λέει να υπακούει στα λεγόμενα της θεία της και εκείνος σύντομα θα επικοινωνήσει μαζί της. Μετά τη φιλά τρυφερά και φεύγει χωρίς να κοιτάξει πίσω του. Και η Μπέθανι μένει μόνη με μια θεία που λίγα λεπτά πριν δεν γνώριζε την ύπαρξη της, σε έναν άγνωστο τόπο μακριά από το σπίτι της και την καθημερινότητά της να αναρωτιέται ''τί ακριβώς συνέβη τώρα''. Ένα σωρό ερωτήσεις απασχολούν το μικρό εφηβικό μυαλό της ερωτήσεις που ψάχνουν απεγνωσμένα απάντηση αλλά ούτε οι γονείς της ούτε η θεία Μίρλι δείχνουν πρόθυμοι να τις απαντήσουν. Γιατί οι υπερπροστατευτικοί γονείς της που δεν την άφηναν ποτέ να κοιμάται σε σπίτια συμμαθητριών της και να πηγαίνει σε πάρτι ή σε άλλες δραστηριότητες ξαφνικά την παράτησαν σε μια άγνωστη θεία;; Τί έχει η μητέρα της και δεν μπορεί να σταματήσει να κλαίει;; Γιατί φύγανε σαν τους κλέφτες τόσο ξαφνικά από το σπίτι τους;; Πού θα πάνε τώρα οι γονείς της και πότε θα επικοινωνήσουν μαζί της;; Για πόσο καιρό θα μείνει με την άγνωστη αυτή θεία και τί ακριβώς θα συμβεί με τη ζωή της από εδώ και πέρα; Όταν πλησίαζε τον πατέρα της άκουσε από τα χείλη του να βγαίνουν οι εξής κουβέντες ‘’Όχι, όχι δεν ξέρει τίποτε για την Ελίζαμπεθ’’. Ποιά είναι η Ελίζαμπεθ και τί είναι αυτό που δεν ξέρει η Μπέθανι;; Γιατί η θεία Μίρλι την κοιτά τόσο παράξενα;; Τί συμβαίνει τέλος πάντων και τί ήταν αυτό που προκάλεσε αυτή την ανατροπή στην καθημερινότητα της;; Η μικρή δεν μπορεί να ησυχάσει και τα πράγματα χειροτερεύουν ακόμα περισσότερο τις επόμενες μέρες όταν βγαίνει έξω στην πόλη και οι κάτοικοι την κοιτούν το ίδιο έκπληκτοι όπως η θεία Μίρλι. Μα γιατί;; Τί έχει το πρόσωπο της;; Γιατί κάποιοι την αποκαλούν Ελίζαμπεθ;; Τί τρέχει με αυτή την κοπέλα και ποιά είναι η σχέση της με τους γονείς της και την πόλη;; Η μόνη της ευχαρίστηση είναι όταν πηγαίνει στο κολυμβητήριο όπου εκεί ξεχνά για λίγο τις πολλές αναπάντητες ερωτήσεις. Λίγες μέρες αργότερα οι γονείς στέλνουν ένα δέμα που περιέχει τέσσερα διαφορετικά πιστοποιητικά γέννησης με διαφορετικά ονόματα και χιλιάδες δολάρια σε μετρητά. Το μυστήριο μεγαλώνει ακόμα περισσότερο και η Μπέθανι αποφασίζει να αναλάβει δράση και να βρει μόνη της τις απαντήσεις που ψάχνει από τη στιγμή που οι γύρω της αρνούνται να τη βοηθήσουν. Η κατάσταση περιπλέκεται με την εμφάνιση ενός μυστήριου άντρα, πρώην κατάδικου που για κάποιο λόγο την έχει βάλει στο μάτι και την κυνηγά. Η Μπέθανι είναι αποφασισμένη να σπάσει το γόρδιο δεσμό που ενώνει μυστικά πολλών χρόνων και να αποκαλύψει την αλήθεια όσο σκληρή κι αν είναι για εκείνη. Είναι αποφασισμένη να βρει τί είναι αυτό που τη συνδέει με την Ελίζαμπεθ και γιατί μοιάζουν τόσο πολύ. Είναι αποφασισμένη να ανακαλύψει το μυστικό των γονιών της και της θείας Μίρλι και να βρει το λόγο που αυτός ο κατάδικος την παρακολουθεί και θέλει να την πλησιάσει. Είναι αποφασισμένη να βγάλει την αλήθεια στο φως ακόμα κι αν αυτό σημαίνει ότι θα πρέπει να πει αντίο στην εποχή της αθωότητάς της και στην προηγούμενη ζωή της. Είναι καλύτερο όμως να αντιμετωπίζεις τη σκληρή αλήθεια και να δέχεσαι το παρελθόν και τα όποια λάθη έκανες ή έκαναν οι γύρω σου από το να την αποφεύγεις, να τρέχεις μακριά και να ζεις μια ζωή μέσα στα ψέματα. Ήρθε η ώρα για τη Μπέθανι Κόουλ να σπάσει τη φούσκα στην οποία την είχαν βάλει οι γονείς της και στην οποία ζούσε όλα αυτά τα χρόνια προστατευμένη και να αντιμετωπίσει την αλήθεια που αφορά την ταυτότητά της και τον λόγο ύπαρξης της. Θα βρει τη δύναμη και το κουράγιο να φτάσει μέχρι το τέλος ή θα δειλιάσει και θα τρέξει να κρυφτεί;; Θα δώσει απαντήσεις στα ερωτήματά της και θα ανακαλύψει το λόγο της δημιουργία της;;

Το βιβλίο Διπλή Ταυτότητα της Margaret Peterson Haddix κυκλοφόρησε στη χώρα το 2008 από τις εκδόσεις Πατάκη και εγώ το ανακάλυψα τρία χρόνια αργότερα εντελώς τυχαία ψάχνοντας στη σελίδα των εκδόσεων στην οποία προωθούν όλα τα παιδικά- εφηβικά τους βιβλία. Να πω την αλήθεια αποφάσισα να το αγοράσω γιατί πρώτον εκείνη την εποχή το ηλεκτρονικό βιβλιοπωλείο από το οποίο παραγγέλνω συνήθως το είχε σε προσφορά και δεύτερον γιατί το εξώφυλλο του μου έδωσε την εντύπωση ότι θα διάβαζα μια ιστορία με εξωγήινους και το βρήκα ενδιαφέρον και ιντριγκαδόρικο ως θέμα. Δεν μου πέρασε από το μυαλό εκείνη τη στιγμή ότι μπορεί το εξώφυλλο να ήταν παραπλανητικό ή ότι εγώ φανταζόμουν πράγματα που δεν ίσχυαν. Έβλεπα δύο ανθρωπάκια που στα ματιά μου μου θύμιζαν τον τρόπο που το Hollywood βλέπει τους εξωγήινους και το μυαλό μου χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη πήγε σε αυτούς. Τελικά έκανα μεγάλο λάθος! Το εξώφυλλο του βιβλίου είναι παραπλανητικό και για μένα μεγάλη αποτυχία. Δεν έχει καμία σχέση με το πρωτότυπο ή με άλλα εξώφυλλα του εξωτερικού τα οποία σε παραπέμπουν στη σωστή κατεύθυνση. Το έκανε και πάλι το θαύμα του με λίγα λόγια ο Πατάκης και πάλι κατέστρεψε μόνος του ένα βιβλίο τα δικαιώματα του όποιου αποφάσισε να αγοράσει για την Ελλάδα. Δεν μπορώ να καταλάβω το σκεπτικό και τη λογική πίσω από αυτό το αποτυχημένο εξώφυλλο. Δεν διαβάζουν αυτοί οι άνθρωποι την ιστορία πριν καταλήξουν στο εξώφυλλο;; Δεν ξέρουν τί διαπραγματεύεται και τί αφορά;; Μόνο τον τίτλο κοιτούν και με βάση αυτόν αποφασίζουν το θέμα του;; Ναι η ιστορία αφορά την Μπέθανι και την Ελίζαμπεθ δύο κοπέλες που είναι πανομοιότυπες εξωτερικά και εσωτερικά, έχουν λίγες διαφορές αλλά δεν μιλάμε εδώ για κάποια εξωγήινη επίθεση που προκάλεσε αυτό το πράγμα, το θέμα του βιβλίου αφορά την κλωνοποίηση! Γιατί μου παρουσιάζεις την βασική πρωταγωνίστρια μια ξανθιά όμορφη νεαρή κοπέλα με μακριά μαλλιά και ωραία χαρακτηριστικά προσώπου με αυτό τον τρόπο στο εξώφυλλο;; Δεν την καταλαβαίνω τη λογική τους το μόνο που μπορώ να πω είναι πως απογοητεύθηκα πλήρως από αυτή τους την απόφαση για αυτό και όποιος δει το βιβλίο στα βιβλιοπωλεία να μην σταθεί καθόλου στο εξώφυλλο να γυρίσει αμέσως στο οπισθόφυλλο και να διαβάσει με προσοχή την περίληψη η οποία δεν είναι παραπλανητική και η οποία μπορεί να τραβήξει την προσοχή κάποιων. Μην κάνετε όμως το λάθος που έκανα εγώ και αγοράσετε το βιβλίο εξαιτίας του εξωφύλλου χωρίς να έχετε ελέγξει προσεκτικά πρώτα την περίληψη και να νιώθετε ότι θέλετε να ανακαλύψετε το μυστήριο που περιβάλλει την Μπέθανι…

Η Διπλή Ταυτότητα αφορά κατά κύριο λόγο άτομα στην ηλικία της πρωταγωνίστριας. Έχει γραφτεί με σκοπό να τα φέρει σε μια πρώτη επαφή με την κλωνοποίηση και τις όποιες συνέπειες της. Θέλει σε πρώτο επίπεδο να τα ενημερώσει και σε δεύτερο να τα προβληματίσει. Τα θετικά και αρνητικά της κλωνοποίησης και το ποιοι πραγματικά είμαστε είναι τα βασικά θέματα με τα οποία ασχολείται η Peterson Haddix, ένας έμπειρος αναγνώστης όμως μπορεί να διακρίνει και άλλα πίσω από αυτά. Μέσω των ιστοριών της Ελίζαμπεθ, των γονιών της Μπέθανι και της Μίρλι η συγγραφέας εξερευνά το φαινόμενο του θανάτου και το πόσο διαφορετικά οι άνθρωποι μπορεί να το αντιμετωπίσουν. Κάποιοι θα πονέσουν, θα κλάψουν, θα νευριάσουν, θα ζήσουν για καιρό στη θλίψη και στη μελαγχολία και δεν θα ξεχάσουν ποτέ το αγαπημένο τους πρόσωπο αλλά κάποια στιγμή θα υπάρξει μια μέρα που θα δεχτούν το γεγονός και θα προσπαθήσουν να προχωρήσουν χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει ότι δεν θα θυμούνται αυτόν που έφυγε. Αλλά ο θάνατος του δεν θα τους σταματήσει από το να συνεχίσουν εκείνοι να ζουν όσο δύσκολο και επώδυνο κι αν είναι. Αυτό κάνουν η Μίρλι και η κόρη της η Τζο. Υπάρχουν όμως και κάποιοι άλλοι σαν τους γονείς της Μπέθανι που το σοκ και ο πόνος της απώλειας είναι τόσο ισχυρά που δεν μπορούν να ηρεμήσουν και να βρουν πουθενά παρηγοριά, δεν μπορούν να συνεχίσουν και αυτό τους οδηγεί σε επικίνδυνες αποφάσεις που θα έχουν συνέπειες στο μέλλον. Συνέπειες που ο πόνος της απώλειας τις αγνοεί εκείνη τη στιγμή. Η επικίνδυνη απόφαση που πήραν οι γονείς της Μπέθανι χωρίς να τη σκεφτούν ουσιαστικά ή��αν να κλωνοποιήσουν την νεκρή αγαπημένη τους κόρη, να την αναστήσουν βασικά μέσω της Μπέθανι. Κράτησαν κύτταρα της και ο πατέρας της την κλωνοποίησε. Και έτσι γεννήθηκε η Μπέθανι ένα κορίτσι πανομοιότυπο με την Ελίζαμπεθ ίδια σχεδόν σε όλα με μόνη βασική διαφορά το κολύμπι. Εκείνη το λατρεύει, η Ελίζαμπεθ το φοβόταν. Το γεγονός ότι οι γονείς της ήταν υπερπροστατευτικοί, δεν την άφηναν λεπτό μόνη της, δεν της επέτρεπαν να ζει όπως τα παιδιά της ηλικίας της, της έκαναν όλα τα χατίρια αρκεί να ήταν εκείνοι πάντα δίπλα της οφείλεται από τη μια στο φόβο ότι μπορεί στα ξαφνικά να τη χάσουν όπως συνέβη με την Ελίζαμπεθ και από την άλλη στην αργή συνειδητοποίηση ότι η κόρη τους είναι ένα κλωνοποιημένο παιδί και πως αν το ανακαλύψουν οι αρχές θα αρχίσουν τα πειράματα πάνω της. Για αυτό και αλλάζουν συνέχεια πόλεις, για αυτό και η Μπέθανι δεν γνώριζε τη ύπαρξη της θείας Μίρλι αφού στο Σάντερφιλ δεν ξαναπάτησαν μιας οι κάτοικοι εκεί γνώριζαν καλά την Ελίζαμπεθ, ήξεραν την ιστορία και θα άρχιζαν οι ερωτήσεις αν την έβλεπαν ξαφνικά και πάλι μπροστά τους ζωντανή. Επέλεξαν να ζουν ως κυνηγημένοι στην ίδια τους τη χώρα και να κόψουν κάθε επαφή με συγγενικά τους πρόσωπα για να προστατέψουν την Μπέθανι. Και επιπλέον είχαν και το θέμα με τον Ντάλτον Βαν Ντάιτ τον τύπο που τους ψάχνει και τους κυνηγά, τον πρώην κατάδικο. Ο συγκεκριμένος είναι αυτός πους τους έδωσε τα λεφτά για την κλωνοποίηση και τώρα χρόνια μετά που βγήκε από τη φυλακή τους ψάχνει για να του δώσουν αυτό που του οφείλουν. Η αποφυλάκιση του ήταν αυτή η πέτρα που τάραξε τα ήρεμα νερά της προστατευμένης ζωής που ζούσε μέχρι τώρα η Ελίζαμπεθ και έβγαλε την αλήθεια στο φως.. Ομολογώ ότι η Peterson Haddix ασχολείται με πολύ σοβαρά ζητήματα και το κάνει με έξυπνο τρόπο. Στήνει μια ιστορία μυστηρίου και θρίλερ αρκετά σκοτεινή σε ορισμένα σημεία της και επιχειρεί με αυτό τον τρόπο να τραβήξει την προσοχή των παιδιών, να τα κάνει να διαβάσουν την ιστορία και μέσα από την λύση του μυστηρίου που καλύπτει τη ζωή της μικρής πρωταγωνίστριας να έρθουν σε μια πρώτη επαφή με θέματα όπως η κλωνοποίηση, ο θάνατος, η οικογένεια, η αγάπη των γονιών προς τα παιδιά και των παιδιών προς τους γονείς. Εγώ μπορεί να έβαλα δύο αστεράκια και να μην μου πολυάρεσε ως βιβλίο αλλά νομίζω ότι είναι αρκετά καλή επιλογή για τους γονείς αν το αγοράσουν και θελήσουν με τη βοήθεια του να ενημερώσουν σε μια πρώτη φάση τα δωδεκάχρονα ή δεκατριάχρονα παιδιά τους για τα παραπάνω θέματα.. Θα είναι σίγουρα μια καλή αρχή..

Εγώ δυστυχώς έχω περάσει εδώ και καιρό την ηλικία αυτή είμαι πλέον στη δεκαετία των είκοσι. Θέματα όπως ο θάνατος και ο πόνος της απώλειας με έχουν απασχολήσει στο παρελθόν από τότε βασικά που έχασα τις γιαγιάδες μου με διαφορά ενός έτους. Δεν είναι το πρώτο βιβλίο που εμμέσως προσπαθεί να με ενημερώσει και να με προβληματίσει για αυτό. Το ίδιο και με το θέμα της οικογένειας, της αγάπης των γονιών προς τα παιδιά και το τί γίνεται όταν η αγάπη αυτή τα κάνει να ασφυκτιούν. Είναι θέματα που έχουν απασχολήσει και άλλους συγγραφείς βιβλίων που έχω διαβάσει. Τα μηνύματα που κρύβονται πίσω από τις λέξεις τα ξέρω ήδη εδώ και καιρό, με έχουν προβληματίσει και έχω διαμορφώσει γνώμη και άποψη. Έτσι η Διπλή ταυτότητα δεν μου πρόσφερε κάτι περισσότερο. Ήρθε αργά στη ζωή μου. Είναι ένα καλογραμμένο βιβλίο, η Peterson Haddix είναι μια συγγραφέας που ξέρει τον τρόπο να κερδίζει την προσοχή των μικρών παιδιών αλλά για τις μεγαλύτερες ηλικίες και για αναγνώστες που έχουν ήδη ασχοληθεί με τα ζητήματα που θίγει το βιβλίο υστερεί και δεν προσφέρει αυτό το κάτι που θα με έκανε να του βάλω υψηλότερη βαθμολόγια και να το προτείνω και σε ενήλικες βιβλιόφιλους. Ο τρόπος εξέλιξης της πλοκής και η ροή έχουν πρόβλημα. Ξεκινά καλά με αρκετές δόσεις μυστηρίου και θρίλερ, σου κερδίζει το ενδιαφέρον αλλά καθώς τα κεφάλαια περνούν και αρχίζεις να καταλαβαίνεις τί παίζει το ενδιαφέρον αυτό μειώνεται. Έχει σαράντα κεφάλαια και κάνει μια μεγάλη κοιλιά γύρω στη μέση. Ο έμπειρος αναγνώστης θα λύσει γρήγορα το μυστήριο γύρω από την ομοιότητα της Μπέθανι και της Ελίζαμπεθ θα αποκωδικοποιήσει τα στοιχεία που πετά στις σελίδες η συγγραφέας και θα φτάσει εύκολα στη λύση πριν η μικρή πρωταγωνίστρια την ανακαλύψει. Δεν μου ήταν δύσκολο να καταλάβω ότι η Μπέθανι ήταν κλωνοποιημένη. Στην αρχή πήγε το μυαλό μου στο ότι ήταν δίδυμη της Ελίζαμπεθ ιδέα που απορρίφθηκε αμέσως αφού δεν είχαν γεννηθεί την ίδια χρονιά, μετά μου ήρθε η τρελή ιδέα της απαγωγής από εξωγήινους για να μουντζώσω τον εαυτό μου λίγες σελίδες παρακάτω και να συνειδητοποιήσω τί πραγματικά ισχύει. Από εκεί πέρα δεν μου ήταν δύσκολο να καταλάβω το κίνητρο των γονέων, γιατί υπήρχαν τέσσερα πιστοποιητικά, γιατί άλλαζαν συνέχεια σπίτια και ήταν τόσο προστατευτικοί. Το μοναδικό μυστήριο που με απασχολούσε ήταν αυτό με τον άντρα που κυνηγούσε τη Μπέθανι. Είχα καταλάβει ότι σχετίζεται με τους γονείς της και με το μυστικό τους, είχα καταλάβει ότι τα λεφτά ήταν δικά του αλλά απέτυχα να βρω την αιτία που τους έψαχνε. Το μυαλό μου είχε φτιάξει ένα άσχημο σενάριο τον θεωρούσα τον κακό της υπόθεσης για να με εκπλήξει η συγγραφέας και να ανατραπεί η θεωρία μου με τα τελευταία κεφάλαια όπου η ιστορία αποκτά και πάλι ενδιαφέρον. Ενώ κάνει κοιλιά στη μέση και η πλοκή προχωρά με ρυθμούς χελώνας αργά και βασανιστικά και το μόνο που θέλεις είναι να φτάσεις στο τέλος για να προχωρήσεις στο διάβασμα κάποιου άλλου βιβλίου ξαφνικά είναι σαν να ξυπνά από το λήθαργο της η συγγραφέας εμφανίζεται το άτομο που έγραψε τα αρχικά μυστήρια και ενδιαφέροντα κεφάλαια και με μια αρκετά καλή ανατροπή μας παρουσιάζει την ιστορία του Βαν Ντάιτ και το γιατί κυνηγά τη Μπέθανι. Μου άρεσε η ανατροπή που αφορούσε τον χαρακτήρα αυτόν. Μου άρεσε το ότι ενώ πίστευα ότι είναι κακός και άθλιος τελικά αποδείχτηκε ότι δεν ήταν και τόσο κακός. Ναι έκανε τρομερά λάθη και το ότι ήθελε να κλωνοποιήσει τον εαυτό του για να ζήσει καλύτερα από ότι έζησε εκείνος τα παιδικά του χρόνια είναι κάτι το τρομερό αλλά ποιός μας λέει ότι το ανθρώπινο μυαλό δεν μπορεί να κάνει αυτή τη σκέψη;; Το άσχημο παρελθόν και οι άσχημες εμπειρίες μπορεί να οδηγήσουν τον άνθρωπό στην τρέλα ή στη λήψη επικίνδυνων για εκείνον και τους γύρω του αποφάσεων. Από όλους τους χαρακτήρες εκεί μέσα ο Βαν Ντάιτ και το σκεπτικό του γύρω από την κλωνοποίηση ήταν αυτό που μου τράβηξε περισσότερο το ενδιαφέρον και την προσοχή. Και είναι κρίμα που η συγγραφέας δεν τον εκμεταλλεύτηκε και δεν στάθηκε περισσότερο στον χαρακτήρα αυτό. Η Μπέθανι εμένα δεν με κέρδισε το ότι ένα δωδεκάχρονο κορίτσι μιλούσε σαν ενήλικο ολοκληρωμένο άτομο με απώθησε. Δεν τη συμπάθησα. Ήμουν ένας αδιάφορος εξωτερικός παρατηρητής που παρακολουθούσε αποστασιοποιημένος το πρόβλημα της. Το ίδιο και με τους γονείς της οι οποίοι δεν εμφανίζονται όσο θα έπρεπε. Νομίζω ότι έκανε λάθος εδώ η συγγραφέας θα έπρεπε να είναι περισσότερο παρόντες στην ιστορία για να εξηγήσουν καλύτερα το σκεπτικό τους και τους λόγους γύρω από την κλωνοποίηση. Η θεία Μίρλι και η Τζο τα μόνο ουσιαστικά υγιή άτομα εκεί μέσα με τράβηξαν για λίγο όχι όμως σε σημείο να αγαπήσω τους χαρακτήρες και να τους θυμάμαι για καιρό μετά το κλείσιμο και της τελευταίας σελίδας του βιβλίου….

Το τελευταίο κεφάλαιο δεν μου άρεσε. Περίμενα ένα πιο δυνατό φινάλε. Εντάξει χαίρομαι που η Μπέθανι αντιμετώπισε την αλήθεια, κατάλαβε ποια είναι πραγματικά, συνειδητοποίησε την ταυτότητα της και το πως θέλει να συνεχίσει από εδώ και πέρα, χαίρομαι που οι γονείς και οι συγγενείς της είναι δίπλα της και την υποστηρίζουν αλλά ο τρόπος αποκάλυψης της αλήθειας στο κοινό, στα μέσα και στις αρχές και ο τρόπος αντιμετώπισης αυτής δεν με έπεισαν. Δεν είναι ένα βιβλίο αυτό στο οποίο ο κόσμος του είναι συνηθισμένος στην κλωνοποίηση και οι άνθρωποι ζουν ξέροντας ότι ανάμεσα τους υπάρχουν κλωνοποιημένα άτομα. Η Μπέθανι είναι το πρώτο ουσιαστικά κλωνοποιημένο παιδί μιλάμε για κάτι τρομερό και φοβερό που αν συνέβαινε στην πραγματικότητα θα μιλούσαν για μέρες τα κανάλια, θα γίνονταν συζητήσεις επί συζητήσεων για τα αρνητικά και τα θετικά και πάει λέγοντας. Εδώ ζώο κλωνοποίησαν και έγινε χαμός φανταστείτε να συνέβαινε αυτό με έναν ανθρώπινο οργανισμό! Ο τρόπος λοιπόν παρουσίασης της αντίδρασης του κόσμου στο φαινόμενο Μπέθανι δεν με έπεισε. Πολύ χαλαρά το πήραν. Εντάξει λέει η συγγραφέας ότι υπήρχαν κάποιες αντιδράσεις στην αρχή, ότι την παρακολουθούσαν, ζήτησαν και δείγματα του ιστού της αλλά και πάλι δεν έγινε ο χαμός που περίμενα να γίνει. Παραήταν ευτυχισμένο και ευχάριστο το φινάλε. Το ήθελα πιο προσγειωμένο στην πραγματικότητα, πιο ρεαλιστικό, πιο αληθινό…

Η Διπλή ταυτότητα είναι ένα βιβλίο που αν ήμουν δώδεκα χρονών θα μου άρεσε και θα με προβλημάτιζε σε σημείο να μην σταματώ να ρωτώ τους γονείς μου για φράσεις, προτάσεις ή παραγράφους που μου έκαναν εντύπωση. Δεν ξέρω αν κάνατε το ίδιο και εσείς όταν ήσασταν παιδιά και δεν καταλαβαίνατε κάτι ή σας έκανε εντύπωση ένας διάλογος ή κάποια φράση αλλά εγώ όταν μου άρεσε κάτι ή με προβλημάτιζε το σημείωνα με μολύβι και έτρεχα στον μπαμπά ή στη μαμά μου τους διάβαζα το επίμαχο σημείο και τους ζητούσα να μου το εξηγήσουν. Το είπα και ��αραπάνω αν οι γονείς θέλουν τα παιδιά τους να έρθουν σε μια πρώτη επαφή με τα θέματα που θίγει η Margaret Peterson Haddix να το αγοράσουν και να τους το δώσουν. Για τις μικρές ηλικίες είναι ένα ελκυστικό βιβλίο. Δεν το συστήνω όμως στους ενήλικες βιβλιόφιλους. Κατά τη γνώμη μου δεν θα τους κρατήσει, οι χαρακτήρες θα τους φανούν λίγοι και αδιάφοροι, η ιστορία αργή και βαρετή ενώ λίγα σημεία της θα τους κάνουν να μην το παρατήσουν και να το ολοκληρώσουν. Τα θέματα του είναι επίκαιρα και πρέπει να ασχολούνται με αυτά οι συγγραφείς αλλά το κοινό του είναι δεδομένο και ��εν είναι δυστυχώς από εκείνα τα βιβλία που λες ότι έχουν γραφτεί για τους εφήβους αλλά άνετα τα διαβάζουν και ενήλικες αναγνώστες...

Just randomly picked this up and read in one sitting. Interesting story, the 1st part I was sitting there like... oh so their daughter is their granddaughter, that's pretty obvious. Wasn't ready at all for the actual truth of the MCs life. Not a whole lot happened and mom slowly slipped into being crazy and had a snapback but it doesnt explain how. The "bad" guy definitely could have been filled out more, one dimensional. He was so Interesting and could have had a great story but it was basically, here he is. He's bad. He called the house. Gasp* Overall good read, even better for the younger age range it's supposed to be for. Creepy in its own right and easy read. Trying not to spoil to much 😅

Double Identity is a very good book. It has a twisty plot, but it’s very interesting. Bethany and her parents seem to be in a great deal of danger. She is very curious. Her parents take her to stay with an aunt that she has never heard of before. Her life before this situation was perfect. She was spoiled, home schooled, and got whatever she wanted. Her parents were very protective, and know they just leave her with someone she has never met. She wants to know what is going on, but there is no one for her to talk to, and she has no way of getting in touch with her father. Throughout this book, I was curious as well. I wanted to know why her parents were acting so strange, and who this Myrlie is. I wanted to know who Elizabeth was, and why it was all such a secret. This book is full of fear, trust, and life-changing situations. I loved the suspense as I read, and it made me actually want to read it. It is interesting to think that this could be a real-life situation. This book really made me think, and kept me interested. The lesson that I got from it, was the fact that you should be yourself no matter what. Bethany did not know what was happening, but she stood strong and never gave up. As many questions as she had for Myrlie, she did not ask and she was never rude. She trusted her, and she had faith, that her parents would do everything that they could possibly do, to keep her safe. At first the story was slow, but before too long I was hooked. I usually don’t read, but I really enjoyed this book. It kept me wondering, and I really seemed to connect with Bethany. I would recommend this book for any teen; boy or girl. I think adults would enjoy it, as well. It is full of thrills, and a question is being answered non-stop. The end of the book was not what I expected but it was okay. Elizabeth turned out to be someone that I never imagined. The whole time I was reading, I was thinking of all the possibilities. Nothing seemed to turn out like I thought it would, but it was good. The idea of “being yourself” stuck throughout the whole book. Anyone who reads this, will definitely be curious, and ask many questions. If you like mysteries and suspenseful stories, this is the book for you. In the end, I was just as surprised as Bethany was and throughout the book, and was just as confused as she was! All of her questions were answered, and everything fell into place. I can not wait to read another book by Haddix, and I hope that I will be just as satisfied.

"Double Identity" by Margaret Peterson Haddix is a mystery book that has its good and bad things. It has some plot twists that leave the reader wanting to find out what happens.

The book starts out with Bethany, the main character, on a drive to visit an aunt she didn't even know existed. Her mom has been crying the whole ride there and she is shocked when her parents tell her that they are leaving her with this aunt. Her mysterious aunt is then introduced as her aunt Myrlie. Bethany’s dad calls once a day, but his number can’t be tracked and Bethany has no idea what’s going on. She starts hearing the name of a girl named Elizabeth, and so many people start staring at her and asking if she really is Elizabeth, that she no longer wants to go out in public. She's desperate to find out who Elizabeth is and what her family was been keeping from her for such a long time.

*Spoiler* I think that the title "Double Identity" relates to the book and it's plot well because when Bethany found out that she was actually a clone of her deceased sister, Elizabeth, she learns about this whole different side of herself, almost like she had a double identity this whole time. In the book, the line "the truth will set you free" , and I believe that this is the theme. This theme can be seen when she found out the truth to questions she'd been wondering about herself and her family, and in the end she let others know that truth about herself too. Her family came together like never before, and even the "bad guy" was able to be set free and go on with his life,

In my opinion , this was good book but a lot of things could have been better. This story lacked the action it had potential for. The whole book is mostly about Bethany wondering about who she is, but she never really does anything about it. The main I liked about this were the characters because you could tell as the reader that they all genuinely cared about each other. I liked the way the author brought her family all together at the end and everything was peaceful but there could've been a lot more action.

On the scale of 1-5 , I would rate this book a 3.5 because like I said, it could've been more intense, especially towards the end. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mysteries that aren't really severe. Overall, I think this book is decent but it isn't something I wouldn't say it's one of my favorites.

Definitely not my favorite Book Talk book ever, but not the worst either.

Pros:
*Ms. Haddix writes quite well.
*I really enjoyed Joss's character and the way she helps Bethany wrestle with some of the ethical/religious aspects of human cloning.
*The meaning behind Bethany's name was really quite clever.

Cons:
*Bethany's voice. She was just shy of thirteen. Yet for all that she freaked out about what was happening, her thought process, reasoning skills, and voice all sounded way too mature. Normally I'm not bothered by characters that sound older than they actually are, but it really got to me here, maybe because I'm not used to reading middle grade. Plus, she was pretty well adjusted for all that her parents' spoiled her.
*Sluggish plot. I think the book was supposed to be thrilling and it...wasn't? It was obvious from almost the beginning that Bethany was a clone, so that kind of let some of the tension out of the story right from the get go. But there also wasn't really enough action to pull me along at the heart-pounding pace the way a really well-done thriller does.
*The ending just fizzled. who would have thought Dalton Van Dyne was nothing more than a lonely, misunderstood, ex-con teddy bear?

I'd like to start by saying that this book didn't really do anything for me proving why I rated it thusly. That being said it was a cute story about a girl who is dropped off at her aunt's house that she had no knowledge of and her parents take off leaving her in this unknown woman's care. Bethany the little girl is left dumbfounded how her perfect family was ripped to pieces in a matter of moments. Bethany's aunt lets slip that she looks like a girl named Elizbeth who has some sort of connection with Bethany. Later on, we discover that there is some sort of relationship between these two girls that furthers Bethany's struggle in life as she discovers who she is and why her parents have marooned her on the island of aunt nobody. I would think despite my opinion of this book as a whole I'd love to use this book to show how great dialogue can lead a story forward and develop characters without the use of multiple life changing events.

This is one of my favorites! It involves a great mystery with a little science. I thought I had it figured out until I found out the real truth, and I was shocked! Great page turner!

Summary: As the novel opens, Bethany is anxious; her father has barely let her out of his sight and her mother has been weeping for months. Now, a few days before her 13th birthday, her father has put the two of them in the car, headed West. He leaves Bethany with her Aunt Myrlie and drives off with no explanation. The only clue Bethany has is what she heard her father say to her aunt, "She doesn't know anything about Elizabeth." Bethany is determined to learn why she has been left with an aunt she never knew existed, and what the mysterious Elizabeth has to do with it all.

With out a way to contact her parents, the 12-year-old tries to figure out the reason behind their strange behavior and learns some family secrets and process. It turns out that she's the clone of her sister, who was killed years earlier in a tragic automobile accident, and she is being hunted by a man who wants to expose her secret existence for his own benefits. A really thrilling story and makes the reader want to keep going and not put the book down!!:D:D

In the novel “Double Identity” by Margaret Peterson Haddix, Bethany, a 12 year old girl faces the challenges of her parents who are slightly older than most of the parents of her friends being over protective. Bethany’s mom will not stop crying and her dad is acting super weird around her. They are going on a super long road trip and her parents will not tell her where they are going. All of a sudden, they pull up into a driveway of an unknown town, and an unknown neighborhood that Bethany had never been to before. Her dad unloads her out of the car with her suitcase and told the unfamiliar old woman named Myrlie to take good care of Bethany until they get back. Little did Bethany know , her parents would not be returning to get her anytime soon. It turns out that Myrlie was Bethany’s mothers sister which made Myrlie her aunt. This experience mad Bethany wonder about her whole life, whether it was a whole big lie or a whole big truth. When Bethany went to the Y for a swim in the pool with Myrlie, a woman looked at her and said you look exactly like someone I knew years and years and years ago. It made Bethany wonder even more. Little did Bethany know, her parents had had a daughter named Elizabeth years ago when they were young and Bethany looked like a clone of Elizabeth. Elizabeth died the day she turned thirteen years old. It was so tragic and that’s why her parents were so over protective towards Bethany. It also turned out that Bethany had tons of different last names and it was so bizarre to everyone because Myrlie knew Bethany’s dad as Walter Krull and Bethany’s last name was Cole, it made Bethany wonder once again. Bethany was in danger and she didn’t even know it. Everywhere she went everyone would stare at her in astonishment and tell her that she looked like someone that they knew years upon years upon years ago. And they couldn’t take their eyes off of Bethany. It was the strangest experience that Bethany had ever had in her entire life. Bethany was most worried about her parents when the sent her ten thousand dollars through the mail and there was no return address on the envelope. They tried to redial phone calls from Walter but there was no answer and all the phone would say was. This number is incorrect. Something astonishing happens at the end but I shall not reveal

I have read every single book by Margaret Peterson Haddix, and this book is still one of my absolute favorites, a reading stand-by that never gets old.
Bethany's parents put her in the car, drive for days, and won't answer any of her questions about what's going on. Her mother has been crying for no apparant reason for the past few months. She's frightened, and doesn't know what's going on with the parents who usually take such good care of their one and only darling. Then they drop her off at a house with a woman claiming to be her Aunt Myrlie, without saying when they'll be back. She must learn what is going on with her parents, and why everyone who sees her acts like she's supposed to be dead (note: not a living-dead book! Thought I should say that . . . ), and who is this Elizabeth she heard her father mention to Myrlie (i.e. "she doesn't know anything about Elizabeth")? Also, who is the man who seems to almost be stalking her, and what does he want with her parents? Bethany struggles to find answers, but the more she gets the more she doesn't know if she really wants to know the answer to her questions.
I've read this book at least five times, and I know the big ending. I still love to read it anyway. The characters are lovingly crafted and engaging, big questions are raised, and I just love the big advice theme in the novel - Don't ask why did something happen, just ask what you're going to do next. I totally reccomend this to any and all who are considering it, I think it might technically be called a thriller ('m not clear on that, thought), but it is very appropriate, the violence is practically nonexistant, and the main struggle is a phsycological one. A wonderful book all around, and maybe you'll even consider picking up one of her other books!

I started the book and I loved it because this book showed suspense. The first sentence that the book started with was "My mother is crying." The first thing I thought was "Why is she crying?" The more that I read the more I had understood why she was crying. The main character in Double Identity is Bethany who is about to turn thirteen. In the beginning of the book her parents take her to her aunt Myrlie. Bethany never knew she had a aunt so she was confused. Every time Bethany would ask a question, Myrlie would pause and not finish answering the question. She would hear Myrlie and her father talking about a girl named Elizabeth.

Who is a Elizabeth? Bethany wanted to know so bad but she didn't know how to find out. Myrlie wouldn't talk to her about it because she would always pause. One night it was about 2:00 am and Bethany heard the phone ring. She got right out b of bed and answered the phone. It was her mom. Her mom screams in the phone "Elizabeth?" She was kind if confused because she has been trying to figure out who she is. Her mother tells Bethany on the phone that she had this horrible dream about her birthday at Sinclair Mountain. Her dad then grabs the phone and she just keeps screaming Elizabeth. Her father told Myrlie to tell her about Elizabeth.

Elizabeth was 13 years old when she died. She had a cousin Joss who is still alive. They were best of friends. They both loved the Olympics. On the way to the Olympics, they got in a car crash. Bethany's mom blames herself for the accident. Later on in the book Bethany meets Joss and she brings over a bunch of videos with Elizabeth. Bethany and Elizabeth look a little similar. At the end of the book her parents come back and they all end up changing. They see Myrlie more often.

I loved this book. It was so good! The beginning blew me away because I didn't think this book would be so great. This is the first book that I have read from the Author Haddix. She is now my favorite author because all of her books start with suspense and you cannot put her books down because they are so amazing!
