‘He never realized how much cleanliness mattered’ – a wise mother’s tactics!

Author Stacy Mitchell earned her degree from UCLA and is serving as a teacher, specializing in early childhood education, using play and humor as effective forms of teaching. HAVE IT YOUR WAY! is her initial publication, and she is joined by Ekeocha Nnaemeka, the fine illustrator.

Adding to the unique aspect of this delightful story is Stacy’s choice of presenting the tale – and message – through the use of chinchillas as her characters. Her lyrical writing pattern flavors the story well: ‘It was Monday night, and the sky was dark: It was bedtime when most chillas play. Little Aidan was having lots of fun until his mother approached him to say. “Aidan, its bed time, which means you have two tasks. We have to brush and scrub those teeth and finish off with a bath.” Aidan rebels, and surprisingly his mother lets him ‘have it his own way.’ Through the days of the week (a fine adjunct to the learning experience of the story) Aidan does not bathe and by the end of the week both his friends at school and his bedclothes reject the smelly little fellow. By Saturday Aidan asks, then pleads, for a bath – and his mother consents – ‘the things you think are a waste of time I do them all FOR YOU!”

This is a fun story, told – and illustrated – beautifully, and one that will appeal to youngsters while underscoring the need for hygiene. A very impressive children’s book debut!
