Ronald Mathias Lockley, known in his published works as R. M. Lockley, was a Welsh ornithologist and naturalist. He wrote over fifty books on natural history.
It's not great writing and this collection from other books isn't particularly well-structured, but it is very interesting to read an evocation of a past time and to reflect on changes in farming, wildlife, social relationships, national organisation, the place of war in our economic policy - all of these have changed so much. Changes for the better mixed with changes for the worse and caused by all sorts of things - war, politics, human nature and sometimes odd specific details of place, time and culture. He tried to find a way through the issues of his times and we need to find a way ahead now! I most enjoyed reading about a particular area, which I have visited - sense of locality is another interesting area of change - and his knowledge of birds and his attempts to make a farm work.
