A Facebook application once told Jesse Petersen that she'd only survive a day in a zombie outbreak, but she doesn't believe that. For one, she's a good shot and two, she has an aversion to bodily fluids, so she'd never go digging around in zombie goo. Until the zombie apocalypse, she lives in the Tucson with her husband and two cats and writes snarky urban fantasy about monsters and zombies. Find out more about the author at www.jessepetersen.net.
I enjoyed this one! I am so glad that I finally tackled this series. It was a lighter listen but had enough zombie action to keep my interest at all times. I really appreciated the humor that was worked into the story. I would recommend reading the series in order if at all possible since details from the first two books are frequently referred to in this installment.
In this installment, David and Sarah are trying to make it to the wall that has divided the United States in half. They have some pretty close calls with other survivors and pick up a couple of individuals to help them on their mission along the way. David is having a few side effects from his close call in the previous book that made things extremely interesting.
I listened to the audiobook and thought that Cassandra Campbell did a great job with the story. I really think that she has been the perfect narrator for this series. She really brought the characters to life and helped to make the story even more exciting. I would definitely pick up more books in the series if given the chance.
We are farther into the Zombie Apocalypse and our loving couple is trying to get to safety and find someone to pass on something they hope will change the world, again. Unfortunately not every one wants the madness to end. Especially those that may have started it. An excellent story that takes humor and horror and mixes them perfectly.
(Spolier Alert: Do not read unless you’ve read the previous two books in the Living With The Dead series.)
If you’re familiar with some of my more recent reviews, you’ll know I’m a big fan of the Living With The Dead series. So I was very excited to sink my teeth into (no zombie pun intended) Eat Slay Love by Jesse Petersen and read it in just a few days.
Picking up where Flip This Zombie left off, Sarah and David are making their way to the Midwest wall in hopes of passing off the vial of the cure they’ve procured. But the journey is much easier said than done since they have to stick to local roads (zombie and car crash filled highways are just too risky) and find supplies along the way. Sarah and David’s marriage, which was rocky when we first met them, is intact but Sarah has a sense of worry over losing David – who was bite, but cured, by a zombie.
Her fears aren’t irrational either. Suddenly David is lifting nearly double his weight, sleeping less and overall is a bit more bad ass than before. While Sarah struggles with this they end up saving a tabloid TV reporter who joins them on their trip to the wall to film it all.
Just when the three think they’ve left the crazy cults behind on the West Coast they run into one down south. A shocking discovery is made about David in the process of their escape from the cult. While Sarah fights to keep the secret of the cure from their TV reporter friend, it becomes harder and harder. Especially when a former rock legend now turned some-what-recovering addict joins them. Now, the four kick it into gear and aim to make it to the Midwest wall before any cults (or zombies) can get a hold of them.
The last 50 pages or so are completely addicting and left me turning the pages at record speed to find out what happens. While the ending gives a bit of closure, enough so that I’m wondering if there will be a 4th Living With The Dead. While Eat Slay Love could work as the final book, I can’t help but want more of Sarah and David’s adventures. Heck I’d even read a “Life After Living With The Dead” book. Who wouldn’t want to see Sarah back at work pulling a gun on a co-worker who sneaks up on her? Overall, fans of Living With The Dead will find themselves loving Eat Slay Love. Which, in my opinon, may just be the best book in the series.
This is the 3rd book in the Living With the Dead series. Zombies, as a genre, isn't where I spend a lot of time, but over the years, I've come across some wonderful zombie books....unfortunately this wasn't one of them. This was just okay for me. I liked the story line about a possible cure and its side effects, but the characters were a little annoying. This had a light and fluffy feel. I guess I was wanting a little more depth but the characters were always fluttering off to the next scene and I never felt I was getting to know them any better. So 2 stars, and I don't think I'll be reading more in this series. It wasn't for me.
Some fun adventures with Sarah and David trying to deliver the cure for becoming a zombie. Plus, some bad ass women in this one. Sarah and someone new they meet on the road, really bring the heat to some bad dudes and situations.
This was excellent. I have come to enjoy the humor in this book and the witty comebacks. A secure ready that you will finish in one sitting.
Now that David has been bitten and cured by a zombie they are on their way to deliver the cure. Sarah is upset because David seems fine but he is super strong as a side effect.
I am glad that their marriage was saved by the Apocalypse.
I found the TV reporter a tad annoying, but I loved the addition of the rock star. So funny. They run into another cult could you imagine.
This series just keeps getting better and better. More suspense, more character development, more danger, more heroism—and a satisfying end to it all. I know that there is a fourth book, but I can’t help but think that at one time, this one was intended to be the last.
This is a perfect mix of humor and pathos, of adventure and romance, and of marriage plus zombies. It lives up to the standards set by its predecessors, and then it goes even further. Lovely.
Eat Slay Love is the third outing for Sarah and David—the ever-angsty zombie-slaying couple. At this point in the series, some cracks start to appear. The super-shallow, 21st century cultural commentary begins to fray as the characters advance ever farther into the apocalypse world, and Petersen's world-building begins to get a little cardboard. That said, the wit and jouncy fun retains most of its flare, and makes for another good popcorn-crunching sugar high of a book. I am not going to read further in the series though—it definitely feels like there is little more to fuel future installments but fumes, and it is remarkable that Petersen was able to get this far without running the substance of the books off the road. Reflecting from the perspective of three books in, I would say that Living With the Dead is a far better book series than it feels like it has a right to be. Satirizing modern culture in the context of the ever tropish zombie apocalypse, Petersen manages to mirror some of the commentary on insularity so eloquently explored in H.G. Wells' War of the Worlds but with a thoroughly modern lens. The dialogue is punchy, the zingers are cute, and the action is silly but never stupid. It's really a very decent trilogy of books, and I think many readers would find a lot to like.
This was another fun read - as a conclusion it's open ended... but what do ya know, turns out it's not the last book like I thought, so never mind that. The action was fun, the new characters added humor and conflict. I love where their relationship has ended up, considering where they started in book 1. And it's always interesting the way, despite being funny, this series still throws some unexpected gut punches. Now to look into that book #4 that I didn't realize existed!
2020 I eventually liked Nicole and McCray (he definitely took longer to like), but it had been David and Sarah alone for so long that it was a little weird to change that group dynamic. Eventually, it was weird in a good way. And my like for Nicole kind of flip flopped. Some of the time I like her and then she'd be a little annoying (especially when they met McCray) and I'd start to dislike her again.
Aside from that, it ended pretty well. Which was a bit surprising since there is another book coming up. I mean, McCray has been shot, so that's bad, but he's on his way to get help so you kind of feel like he's going to be alright. You get the news about Sarah's family, but you wish that she got to see them. Sarah and David are almost safe. So freaking close to safe with a bunker full of guns and good people. But they have to go back on the run by themselves, which sucks. But, thankfully, it wasn't this big cliffhanger ending.
The first two books were a little frustrating to read to say the least the whole time instead of being the lead it was like sarah was playing back up for David. She always gets caught or pinned by zombies and ALWAYS needs help. The whole time say "I'm no longer squeamish" then turns around and acts squeamish. Or "I'm no longer surprised by zombies" Then turns around and gets surprised and nearly bitten like she just started fighting instead of months under her belt AND always has excuse after excuse of why she sucks so bad after boasting how good she is.. Finally I thought in this book that you know David seems to have some cool powers, Zombies avoid him, super strength, doesn't feel pain. But wait a minute he's not the star of these damn books! sarah is! but she is so weak and submissive "I know better than to argue when he has a plan..." she doesn't even have a back bone! The first book started out great (If they argues she's stand toe to toe, now she just nods like a dick whipped woman) but got crappier and crappier from there, and by this book its apparent David is the dominate one between them, he makes the decisions, she follows. David gets powers, she gets lamer. This series is lacking in a lot of areas and makes me want to burn em. DO NOT PUT THIS ON A STRONG FEMALE LEAD LIST, it really really doesn't belong anywhere near it.
Toujours aussi drôle et déjanté. David est "surprenant", et le couple rencontre 2 nouveaux personnages dont la dynamique est assez amusante. On a toujours notre lot irrévérencieux de petites références musicales, people, geek.
I really liked this third novel in the series. I think the characters are definitely growing and I like the idea inclusion of the governmet and the wall. I don't want to give anything away, but I think how the story ends is definitely the way it should have been. I couldn't imagine it working well if it ended another way. Overall I think it's a fun series and I enjoyed it.
This one had all the potential to get crazy. Only...it just never really did (for me). Now, that said, there is enough here to continue with the series for me. I just felt a bit disappointed with this one. I thought that it fell back on some of the weaknesses from the first book.
Probably 3.5 stars. I enjoy these books. They’re funny and silly and a bit cheesy at times. But very enjoyable. Now I just need to figure out how to get my hands on book 4…
I love this series and hate to see it end especially the way it ended. I was so not happy with that. I would have given it 5 stars but there are so many unanswered questions.
Sarah and David are still fighting the zombies, and are continuing their journey towards the wall and safety, if the wall really exists, dividing human people from the roving zombie hordes. Author Jesse Peterson manages to keep the story fresh, in spite of the continuing battles with the zombies. But don't expect the story to end with this installment, or for things go well with our hero couple. It IS the zombie apocalypse, after all, and Sarah and Dave have more zombies to conquer before they can rest on their laurels.
In Flip This Zombie David and Sarah fight off bionic zombies created by the evil Dr. Kevin who regardless of his reasoning behind creating these 'super' zombies also managed to invent a cure (or vaccine... maybe) for the zombie infection!
Since the Zombie Apocalypse went down, there have been rumors about the Midwest Wall (WIN... that means I'm safe!!!) Sarah and David are slowly making their way toward the Wall, with the zombie cure- hoping that it actually exists!
In route to the Wall, they happen across Nicole Nessing (a TV star from before) running from a pack of zombies. After checking to make sure she hadn't been bitten, Sarah doesn't like the way Dave is practically DROOLING all over her and contemplates throwing her back... Only for a minute though.
They get BACK on the road, heavy one blonde, pre-zombie apocalypse TV star and they are immediately bombarded by trucks, inhabited by freaks racing toward them demanding they come to their "camp", because "This here road is our territory." type stuff. They have no choice...
"Unfortunately, I felt like we were lambs going to a slaughter, not about to frolic in a field or something." -Sarah
The leader of this 'town' (ahem... cult) decided as punishment for trespassing on their road- Dave has to go into 'The Pit' or...you know an in-ground freaking swimming pool filled will 30 zombies! Sarah and Nicole get to go free in order to spread the word to everyone else NOT TO COME NEAR THEIR TOWN. Dude- duh! Make a freaking sign you psycho!
"All's fair in love and zombies." -Sarah
Okay... so now this is the tricky part. Too many details/not enough... spoilers... UGH! Here we go! I'm opting for vagueness, because I HATE to spoil this book! It was SO AMAZING!
Does Dave make it through the Zombie Pit of Death??? I'll NEVER tell... But, Sarah finally tells Nicole about the cure that she's got hiding under her shirt... just in case and they pick up ANOTHER stow away ex-rockstar guy!
They make it to the famous Midwest Wall, which is actually a HUGE fence, surrounded by heavily armed guards, topped with razor sharp wire and oh- surrounded by a horde of zombies bigger than they've ever seen before. I know.
This book is a ROLLER-COASTER ride of crazy zombie AWESOME. Seriously, I was constantly GASPING for breathe, doing the whole "Oh my god! Oh my God! Oh my God!" thing the ENTIRE time. I'm telling you- I love this series more and more with each and every book!
I really enjoyed the first book in the series, ‘Married with Zombies’ and thought it was a unique take on the genre’s leading characters. Dave and Sarah are married you see, and just before the zombie apocalypse they were on the verge of divorce. But nothing brings you together more than the world around going to shit and Sarah and Dave found their love for one another growing again, and surprisingly they made a pretty good team.
However, with the second book ‘Flip the Zombie’ the humour was missing for me which made the book a little darker. Normally I love dark and gritty urban fantasies but since I fell in love with the snark and Dave and Sarah’s lighthearted married couple banter I was disappointed when I found it lacking.
Unfortunately, "Eat Slay Love" has gone the other way. There is way too much snark, innuendo and jokes that I felt saturated by it. Nearly every paragraph Sarah is making some quip or smart alek comment and after a while it just had my eyes rolling and started to get on my nerves.
But despite this irritation of Sarah’s I still liked her, she is kinda funny and sometimes the comedic moments were spot on and brought a smile to my lips. There’s also plenty of action and suspense, and with the addition of two other characters, Nicole, a reporter and McKray, a washed out rock star, there are lots of great interactions and the dynamics between these four was great to read.
After being bitten by a zombie at the end of book two, David is finding that he isn’t quite the same – he’s slightly different. Sarah is noticing all sorts of things such as his increased hunger, increased strength and the fact that the zombies don’t seem to want to eat him. While dealing with these disturbing revelations, their small group is also taken by another cult, which of course they have to escape from as well as avoiding the zombies who want to munch on their brains.
VERDICT:
“Eat Slay Love” is fun reading and great for a quick entertaining read. It’s not quite up to par with the first book, but definitely better than the second. I’m sad to hear that Orbit have now dropped the series, I think Sarah and Dave still had quite a few stories to tell - at least the series ended on a high note.
I knew nothing about Jesse Petersen, nor had I ever heard of this book. I didn’t know her style, what she wrote about, or anything else she had written.
Ten pages into Eat Slay Love and I was absolutely kicking myself that I had not discovered her earlier. What the heck had I been doing that I was completely oblivious to this funny, witty, absolutely delightful series about a married couple living through the zombie apocolypse?? This is the third book in the Living with the Dead series, and as soon as I had finished it, I was on the phone to my local bookstore ordering the first two. The remarkable thing is that while this is the third about David and Sarah, I had no troubles at all following it. I wasn’t confused or lost, not having read the first two. You can definitely read this without having read the others.
Sarah would probably be my favourite kick-ass heroine to date. Seriously. She has no special powers, no superstrength and she doesn’t talk to ghosts – but by god, she can kick zombie ass when she needs to.
David and Sarah are my new heroes. I just adored them. And here we’ve got a bit of romance, but there’s no love triangle between the lead heroine and two broody alpha males – they’re married! I can’t tell you how refreshing that was! Snarky, sarcastic, funny….honestly I can’t say enough good things about this series. The characterization is absolutely spot-on. I actually laughed out loud in quite a few places. Seeing the zombie apocolyptic world through Sarah’s eyes almost had me hoping for the real thing – cos believe me, I’d be trying to channel Sarah if it happens!!!
This is a book I will award 5 out of 5 to, and that’s rare. It’s only happened to me a couple of times this year so far – I’ve read a lot of fantastic books, but to go all out and give it the Big 5 Stars doesn’t happen very often at all. But this book….oh peoples, go out and BUY it…NOW!
If you love zombies, if you love strong tough independant and FUNNY heroines, if you’re tired of the same ol’ same ol’ kick-ass heroine with the issues and baggage and having to decide between two alpha males…you are going to LOVE this series.
The Living with The Dead series should be a sitcom. It’d be the anti-The Walking Dead. I don’t know what it is about these books, be it the current pop culture references or that Shaun of the Dead/Zombieland kind of feel, but I really like them. The lines are genuinely funny, there’s plenty of action and zombie gore, and it’s a perfect length for this kind of story. In short, it certainly packs a punch (or in this case, a shotgun). If you want a departure from the usual drama-filled and highly sexualized urban fantasy series, then this one comes highly recommended. Peterson writes in prose, making it very easy to visualize what’s happening so that the comedy translates better. What’s also good about these books is that you don’t really need to read the previous novels to understand the story. Sure, it does enrich the experience, but Peterson throws reminders out there at just the right time so that it isn’t a distraction or an annoyance. This helps a lot with flow and decent plot progression.
I will say that if you’ve read the prior novels, it is starting to become a tad predictable in terms of their companions that they meet along the way. It’s no longer a “will they disband?” rather it’s now a “when will they disband?” I do rather like some of the characters we’ve met so I don’t always want to see them go. The point is clear that this is all about Sarah, Chris, and the zombies. Thankfully, that's still good enough.
This is the third (and last) book in the Living With The Dead series by Jesse Petersen. And after enjoying the hell out of the other two, I couldn't wait to get stuck into this one.
Sarah and David now have a new mission--they've got the zombie cure and are making their way towards the Wall to make sure it gets into the right hands. Sure, there might not even be a Wall, but it's worth the effort. So they continue to trek across the country, stumbling on other survivors along the way. Here, they meet up with an annoying reporter on a mission, and a doped-up rocker. But not before nearly being killed by some radical rednecks who want to teach them a lesson.
Oh, and there's the David-having-super-strength thing. And the zombies-don't-detect-David thing. Both seem to be side effects after receiving a dose of the cure himself, and definitely prove to be very handy.
This is another hilarious, fast-paced addition to a series that I've grown very attached to. It's got a bit of everything--hungry zombies, lots of zombie shooting, plenty of funny banter, some sad moments, some happy moments, and some darn-scary moments. Besides, Sarah and David are so likeable, I'm very sad to see them go. I can't believe the publisher dropped this series. I'm seriously bummed about it. :(
At least I can buy myself a copy of this Kindle book, featuring short stories set in the same world but featuring other characters.
Eat, Slay, Love is the perfect continuation of Flip this Zombie . The story automatically picks up from where it left off with David just barely being saved from becoming a zombie himself.
The same funny comments that I’ve become to expect from Jesse Petersen did not disappoint either; however, I do wish that she would change up the story a bit. It’s always: keep heading towards the Wall, pick up supplies, kill some zombies, find some weird random human that will eventually die, find crazy people and get kidnapped, escape from crazy people, continue heading towards the Wall.
Nicole’s character, well… I kept hoping she’d hurry up and get eaten. She was obviously some dumb blonde bimbo and what was up with her constantly doing sexual favors for everyone? It was just weird and didn’t seem to mesh well with the rest of the story.
Overall, I still remain happy with the series and will continue to read whatever Jesse Petersen writes.
At the end of the second Married With Zombies novel, Flip This Zombie, the unthinkable happened: during a fight with a zombie, Dave was bitten on the hand. Fortunately it happened at a secret research facility headed up by a mad scientist and Sarah showed up in the nick of time with a cure to the infection. Now, armed with a vial of the cure, which they hope can be used to end the Zombie Apocalypse, they travel to what may only exist as a legend: The Midwest Wall, beyond which people are said to still be living normal lives (emphasis on the Living!)
But travel during a Zombie Apocalypse is far from easy, and between fighting off crazy zombies and even crazier humans, Dave and Sarah have plenty to do to keep busy!
I really like Dave and Sarah. They're a great couple, and they really depend on one another to watch each other's back. They both risk death numerous times to keep the other safe, and they are definitely stronger together than either one would be alone.
Humorous and scary at the same time, a real zombie adventure. This book takes you places you never hope to see and it does it with a sense of humor. The main characters are a couple just out of couple therapy, full of witty comments and love for each other. Dave and Sarah race across the US to reach the safe zone in Illinois. The world has been eaten by brain craving zombies. They shot, cut and blow there way along their path meeting some a few unique characters along the way. My favorite being a drugged out rock star. They stubble into bad luck and then more bad luck. Ah, but there is a tricky surprise with Dave that may help them survive after all. It was a slow start for me but by the end of the book I was so hooked ! I really like the character and want to know how it all ends for them. I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
Loved this book! Jesse Peterson does the Zombie Genre very well. Her splash of humor makes me snort with laughter. Highly recommend this entire series, can't wait for the next one.
