Personal Demons #2

Original Sin

Rate this book
Luc Cain was born and raised in Hell, but he isn’t feeling as demonic as usual lately—thanks to Frannie Cavanaugh and the unique power she never realized she had. But you can’t desert Hell without consequences, and suddenly Frannie and Luc find themselves targeted by the same demons who used to be Luc’s allies.

Left with few options, Frannie and Luc accept the protection of Heaven and one of its most powerful angels, Gabe. Unfortunately, Luc isn’t the only one affected by Frannie, and it isn’t long before Gabe realizes that being around her is too…tempting. Rather than risk losing his wings, he leaves Frannie and Luc under the protection of her recently-acquired guardian angel.

Which would be fine, but Gabe is barely out the door before an assortment of demons appears—and they’re not leaving without dragging Luc back to Hell with them. Hell won’t give up and Heaven won’t give in. Frannie’s guardian exercises all the power he has to keep them away, but the demons are willing to hurt anyone close to Frannie in order to get what they want. It will take everything she has and then some to stay out of Hell’s grasp.

And not everyone will get out of it alive.

I had to stay up until 2am in the morning to finish reading this. The book manages to make you smile, make you want to cry, make you say WTF and make you want to drop kick several of the characters in the face (repeatedly) over the span of a few pages.

Now I need Book 3 now

First of all,
description
I have problems. A lot of problems with this series. If I can turn back time, I'll hit myself in the head before I can purchase this nightmare. Sure, I might get a bump on my head the size of an egg for a week but at LEAST I could have saved myself some money AND from the trauma and doubt in humanity this series caused me.

Yes, I admitted that this book was written in style that is slightly better than the first book "Personal Demon" (It's really my demon if you get what I mean) so here you go, my applaud.
description

BUT

But my fellow friends, the story line sink even further. I know it should be deemed impossible after the first installment... but like I said before in my first review, the first book was the most bearable of it all. I'm not going to even mention the third book. By the time I was done, I decided to lean it to one of my 'friend' who at that moment I wasn't quite happy with. Needless to say our friendship is kinda rocky at this point.

Now aside from that. Let's get into all the problems I have with characters of this book shall we? Since I strongly dislike most of them and it would take too much of my time to point out every flaws, I'm going to go with the main character which most of my burning passion (cough cough) flows toward.

Frannie Cavanaugh.
description
I don't like the name Frannie, no offence to all Frannie out there. I think my dislike of this name originate (COUGH) from this book. So blame the book not me.

Anyhow, where to start?

This girl bitch is simply the most annoying slash selfish slash is she in heat or something?(I'll explain what I meant in a bit). But this is my reaction to her:
description

I'm known to have low tolerance to stupidity and this Frannie girl had to be one of the most idiotic heroin I ever read about.

She's the type of girl that make us women look bad with her screaming, nervous break down, and the inability to control her emotions and hormones. She had no problem cheating on her 'lover' if she feels horny. Basically if she want kissing someone, she'll kiss them regardless of her relationship status with another guy.

Of course she sees herself as someone really in control and smart but the fact remains that all she seemed to be doing in this story are;

I NEED TO SLEEP WITH GUYS
I'M DEPRESSED
I DON'T BELIEVE IN LOVE
I WANT A NORMAL LIFE WITH A DEMON/ANGEL BOYFRIEND
I HAVE SWANG AND HELL AND HEAVEN WANTS ME
I WANT GABE
I WANT LUC
I'M TRYING TO SLEEP WITH GUYS
OH MATT
TRYING TO SLEEP WITH GUYS AGAIN
I'M DEPRESSED
I WANT LOVE BUT I DON'T WANT TO LOVE ANYONE
TAYLOR NO!
LILITH AND MATT
LILITH AND LUC NOO!
LUCIFER YESS
I WANT GABE
I WANT LUC
TRYING TO SLEEP WITH GUYS
AND EVERYONE GOES CRAZY

I think there's a plot somewhere among her trying to have sex, trying to be pitiful, trying to blaming herself stuffs that she know wasn't her fault but because she 'needed' to be/look depressed.

And of course she tried to convinced herself that she's a pure person (never mind all the sexual shit going on) because she was doing something for other or helped them. In truth her actions were pretty self-serving BUT doesn't matter for dear Frannie, she's too absorbed in herself to really know the difference.

She had to be the victim.

Her demon boy toy Luc has been tricked to have sex with a succubus A SEDUCING SUCCUBUS! (even if I'm straight I don't think I can resist her either).

Let me explain more when I said 'tricked.' The succubus made it so Luc thinks that she is Frannie. So yes he thought he was sleeping with Frannie when in reality it was just one of the succubus's mind trick.

Naturally she got pretty pissed like any person. But different from people with functional brain who would soon realized that he had no chance against her, she did not realize that (why am I not surprised).

What made me pull my hair out even more is the fact that she actually had no right to her bitchy behaviors and declare herself as the victim when she herself is WILLING to kiss and do more with ANOTHER GUY (Gabe, her guardian angel boy toy) the moment Luc wasn't around! Willingly! Without feeling guilty too, her little to non-existing brain can't wrap around the ideal of fairness and that you're supposed to treat people the way you want to be treated.

Did I mention that her decision making part of her brain, specially the part that tells her to notice important things or the seriousness of the situation, seemed to be highly lacking. Frannie is also one of those dumb leads that keep important life threatening information she knew to herself when she should tell it to her protector. I call this type the I-want-to-get-myself-killed-so-badly-but-don't-tell-anyone-that type.

description

Or maybe that needs to happen or else the whole damn thing wouldn't have a plot at all. I hate it when book does that. So transparent. So painful. So predictable. Ughhh.

Oh, and she have a brother who's as stupid at her too, well maybe better at least... and she have 5 other sisters. Well they're probably the only group of characters I didn't hate. Probably because they don't show up much and doesn't seem to be CRAZY in love/lust with someone in the story.

I guess it's like what they say:
YOUR BRAIN STOP WORKING THE MOMENT YOU FALL IN LOVE

BUT still, I just can't understand why Gabe or Luc OR ANYONE would fall for her or more importantly why would that kind of power (very powerful power from GOD, the kind that can destroy/save the world etc) belonged to someone like Frannie in the first place!

I questioned humanity after that, specially with a lot of good reviews for this book...

I simply do not understand.

THIS SERIES IS HORRIBLE. GIVE ME MY MONEY BACK!!!

Rougher. Naughtier. Less Hellhoundey.

In the beginning, it was just nice to see Frannie and Luc and Gabe again. All seemed well, sort of sweet and hopeful. The horizon was rosy. But of course it can't stay that way. Oh no. They all have to get dragged through a maelstrom of insane crazy twists, so that by the second half of the book you're all, "Wait, what?" and "Oh no. She did NOT just do that." And, "He'd better just straighten up, or I'm gonna burn this mother down."

Needless to say, Original Sin is addictive. It is not short on surprises, and it lays on the intrigue pretty thick, to rev you up for book three.

I'm looking forward to the epic conclusion. It will no doubt lay the smack down. And hopefully have more hellhounds. Because they're adorable.

I want to preface this review by saying that I loved PERSONAL DEMONS, the first book in this series. I thought it was deeply romantic and I loved the dichotomy between angel Gabe and demon Luc and how their love for Frannie manifested itself so differently depending on their nature. I even loved how torn Frannie was between them. But ORIGINAL SIN is like a completely different animal, one that I think may need to be put down.

The first half of ORIGINAL SIN is a good, if not great, follow up to PERSONAL DEMONS. Frannie, Luc, and Gabe are still trapped in a rather unconventional love triangle. Frannie has chosen Luc, but part of her still longs for Gabe. Both guys love Frannie, but think—for different reasons—that she’s better off with the other guy. Added into the mix this time is Frannie’s twin brother turned guardian angel Matt. He’s been assigned to protect her from the demons who still want to tag her soul for Hell.

The POVs shift from Luc to Frannie to Matt and in the beginning this works. Matt even gets his own potential romance and has to struggle with what he may loose—his wings—if he pursues it. The same highs and lows from the first book carry over at first. The romantic elements are still strong as is the writing, but the other female characters are likewise still embarrassingly catty and in full blown slut mode 24/7.

But in the second half of the book, the tone, the plot, and the characters all shift into something unsettling and ugly. There are a number of ‘ick’ moments one in particular involving a girl having sex with a father, son, and nearly with a daughter from the same family. A number of situations that could be construed as rape. And several other ugly sexual situations involving teenagers. The sexual content in ORIGINAL SIN is never graphic but it is pervasive both in description and dialogue with several crude innuendos. It’s a far cry from the very sexy, but still romantic vibe from PERSONAL DEMONS.

I also lost my patience with Frannie. She waffles from Luc to Gabe and back again one too many times for my taste. Her behavior with Gabe is especially rankling as he tells her constantly that if she pursues him sexually, he’ll loose his wings but she is literally on him every second they are alone reaching for the button on his jeans until he has to plead with her to stop. And then just pages later it’s almost the exact situation with Luc. How am I supposed to respect a character like that?

I’m so disappointed by how much of a departure ORIGINAL SIN is from PERSONAL DEMONS. I still enjoyed Lisa’s expressive writing and the first half of this book is good with the same passionate romance that made the debut a favorite from last year, it’s the second half that I wish I could unread. The third book in the Personal Demons series is called HELLBENT and will be published in May 2012. I hope it’s more like this first book than this follow-up.

Sexual Content:
Kissing. Scenes of heterosexual and homosexual sensuality. Non graphic sex scene. Pervasive sexual dialog and references. References to rape.

Oh the bittersweet conflicting agony! Luc – the betrayal still haunts my thoughts and dreams. Gabe – why can’t you fall and choose to be Grigori? Frannie, my heart aches with yours in this second installment of Lisa Desrocher’s (demons/angels) trilogy/saga. This is the first YA paranormal novel I’ve read that contains all the elements of one ‘hellish’, dangerous plot with MCs that will linger in your mind long after you’re done with the last page. Everything from lurking evils to glorious ‘holy’ good sex and its every tantalizing temptation, the innocence of a summer meadow and babbling spring creek, and all the melancholy desires hidden in-between.

Frannie – I thought her Sway would become more powerful, and I truly wanted to see more of her powers. It was intriguing to learn that she was Nephilim which explains her unearthly gifts. I appreciated her need to be strong and independent, trying to face head-on any demons or evil forces that were trying to overtake her and consume all that is good in her essence. Good will prevail! Frannie proves this truth as she overrides any demonic essences yet to overturn Luc, once again. How incredible is she! But oh my G, nothing can give voice to the penetrating hurt, core shaking pain and ultimate betrayal that Frannie endures as the images of Luc and Lili’s intimacy replay in my mind. How heartbreakingly painful that was! Tears fell from my eyes as Frannie realized what she was seeing when Luc was ‘completely lost’– I didn’t want to read anymore after that. I was in so much pain for Frannie.

Luc – Ok, I know that his betrayal to Frannie was not his fault. In no way could he be held responsible for the overpowering temptations of the evil succubus, but still, it would have softened the pain for me had Frannie not seen Luc all caught up in devouring lust for Lili. That B!  And no matter what I say to convince myself otherwise, I was slightly delighted when Luc suffered horrible, inhuman punishment from Lucifer himself. Muah hahaah! *Evil laughter lingers for a little while here...* But, in the end, I still want Luc to be saved again, even if it’s Gabe that pulls him out of hell’s fires. Luc may try as hard as he wants, but there’s no way in hell he’ll be able to stay away from Frannie. And yes, a few tears shed for Luc when he realizes how much he’s hurt Frannie, how much his uncontrolled betrayal has scarred her. And it’s so oh so sad…made me want to turn back time for him. Just so his love for Frannie would be pure…and not tainted in her eyes, in the way she saw him with that FUGLY Lili!

Gabe – Forever the white knight in shining wings…that’s Gabe to me. He is beautiful, perfect, glorious! IMO, Gabe can do no wrong. He is the perfect gentleman, the perfect angel, and if he fell for his love/lust for Frannie, it’s all good! He’d still be perfect, even fallen. How could every girl not want him?! He is always there to save Frannie, comfort her and give her the solace she seeks. I’m saddened knowing what would happen to him if he fell – so NOT fair! There goes my heart, squeezing and thudding again, hurting for him. Giving up Frannie the way he does, bringing Luc back to “run interference” so he doesn’t cave into his wildest temptations. How unfair is that?! I just hope that some justice is afforded to him for all that he obliges to Frannie, and I know he is only carrying out his heavenly duties, but he deserves love too. Just saying…I’d want to hold him, forever. 

Matt – I hate him! That’s all I can say. I hope that he gets ‘his’ when the time comes.

Lisa Desrochers has done it again (captured my love for angels and demons alike), and all of you Personal Demons fans, Team Luc or Team Gabe, you’ll want to pick up your copy IMMEDIATELY when it comes out so you can start your roller coaster ride through heaven and hell. Watch out for Luc’s glowing red eyes and Gabe’s splendid wings – they’ll carry you through one page to the next! 10 stars on this one!

Review from Teens Read and Write

ORIGINAL SIN is sinfully delicious! A sexy, adventure jam-packed with tons of fun and excitement starring some of my favorite YA characters!

The demons are back in spades and using every sneaky trick in the book to isolate Frannie and Luc, exploiting human emotions and bringing about the worst. They're so good at their jobs!

Frannie returns as her spunky, strong self. Luc - still sooo super sexy. Okay, I did have an issue about him missing some glaring clues about a particular someone, but he pulls through in the end. Or does he? There's that blasted cliff hanger ending...Argh, I hate those, making me wait!

And Gabe? Gabe is gone forever. Well, for most of the book. I missed him.

Instead we've got Frannie's new guardian angel, her brother Matt, who despises Luc and turns out to be rather unangelic in his attempts to protect Frannie from Luc. But Luc is AWESOME so I'm thinking, What is wrong with you, dude?

With three points of view - Frannie, Luc and Matt - I enjoyed getting into everyone's head. Lisa Desrochers does a wonderful job seamlessly integrating the alternating POV's to keep it interesting without any confusion.

Be aware that ORIGINAL SIN punches up the sex factor. There isn't explicit detail but it's happening and demons use it as a way to tag human souls.

ORIGINAL SIN hurtles you through a crazy batch of surprises and plot twists that had me raising my eyebrows and flipping pages. I can't wait to see how Frannie is going to get through all of it. I mean, I really want to know!

Last September I read an ARC of Personal Demons by Lisa Desrochers and fell utterly in love. The world was so fun, the story stellar, and the tone was really sexy. Recently I got the chance to meet Lisa at an author event hosted by the store I work at. So of course two weeks later an ARC of her upcoming sequel, Original Sin, turned up in my hands. No autograph for me. Bollocks.

However, missing the chance to have her sign the book aside, Original Sin lived up to Personal Demons. The mood carries through to the second book and, shock of shocks, surmounts it. This book is better than the first book.

It's been a few months since Frannie's Sway turned former demon Luc human and everyone is adjusting - Luc to all of the less attractive things that humans have to put up with to survive and Frannie who is astounded by her own ability. Also newly changed is Frannie's dead twin brother, Matt, who is now her guardian angel at the behest of Gabe, who has absconded. Frannie misses Gabe's presence but has enough on her plate. Luc's new human.. ahem... "attributes" prove more than enough to distract her.

These books are very sexy in tone, but I'm more interested in what happens between and behind the sex - at the beautiful interactions that Desrochers has imbued into her characters and the story at large. The sex is nothing when compared to Frannie's guilt, Luc's redemption, Gabe's longing, and Matt's rage. Desrochers cycles through many levels of the human condition in this book. Why stop at lust when you can continue with pain as eloquently as Desrochers does? These are genuinely flawed people Desrochers has created: all of them fallible and all of them awesome.

I try not to do spoilers, especially considering the book releases in two weeks and you won't have enough time to forget it but let's just say this - I did not expect that sex scene two-thirds of the way through the book. Wow. Floored. Bravo Lisa. Brilliant plot point. You've surprised even me. I'm glad I sacrificed a piece of cheesecake to retrieve this from a friend's house that I had left it at.

5 out of 5 stars. Now I want the third book. *whinge*

I Loved loved LOVED Personal Demon's, so when I saw that Lisa Desrochers will be at BEA I knew I needed to see her. And there she was signing Original Sin. I was thrilled, which is why this one is one of the first books I read from my BEA pile....

In Original Sin Frannie and Luc have to deal their new situation. Luc being mortal, Frannie is tagged for Heaven and tries to use her special gift "sway". But, we also have a new important character here: a new/old *smiles* guardian angel that is here to protect Frannie.

SO instead of having two POV (Frannie's and Luc's) we also have a new one which was a bit confusing in the beginning. Espeically since I was sure I'd love him, but I didn't ... so much. He always tried to do the best for Frannie but always went way above this and made things worse. In the end.. I understand, but while reading I was angry!

LOVED kick ass Frannie and I LOVE sexy Luc, those two characters are hot, sexy, strong and so very much in love! So much passion and deep love.

Original Sin is like Personal Demon's hot in a YA kind of way.. Where normal YA novel stop with kissing, Original Sin goes further and teases you a lot with very steamy scenes. It's awesome how Lisa manages to stay YA suitable but always expands the borders a little bit more. I love this.

I had so many emotions while reading this book. Frustration, Anger, Fear, love and so much heartbreak. And yes tears were involved... There were many twists, turns and surprises that kept me reading it faster and faster!

I loved it and can't wait for the next one. If you are looking for a YA book that explores the borders of what YA can take, go for Personal Demons and start reading. Amazing!

I didn't enjoy the first book from this series - Personal Demons - but for some reason I was still interested to see where the author took the characters so I decided to give this book a shot.

A lot of the cheese factor and "smells" are gone from this book which helped. I could never tell if I was supposed to be taking what the characters said seriously in PD or if it was "wink...wink" Maybe both I guess.

My problem is with Frannie. She loves Luc. Luc loves her. Their relationship really progresses in this book but only because Gabe isn't around most of the time. Once he shows up on any number of occasions she's all over him. I get the attraction to him. He's beautiful, he calms her but I just can't wrap my brain around Frannie declaring her undying love for Luc in one paragraph then practically crawling all over Gabe in the next. Maybe if she hadn't decided on Luc I would be able to go along with this better. Or if there was a clearer explanation for her draw to Gabe.

There are a few twists but few revelations when it comes to the BIG things so for me this book felt pretty much the same as the first.

Looking through the reviews I can see I'm totally alone on this so if you enjoy love triangles and angel/demon type of stories then you'll probably enjoy this series and book.
I think it's time for me to admit that it's just not right for me and move on.

3.5 out of 5 rating

Original Sin is the second book in the series, with Personal Demons being the first one. And I'm a little conflicted with my feelings about the book. Like in the first book, I got tired of the whole love triangle. I usually like love triangles, I do. But this one took it too far. It's almost like Frannie is in a relationship with two guys and that just bothers me. You can't keep running back and forth from one guy to another, with both guys being okay with it for the most part.

But I did like the plot. It was fast paced with lots of action and story. And I really like the characters (by themselves, not in the love triangle :) ) Frannie is such a kick-butt girl. I love that she can stand up for herself! And the two guys are pretty great too. I would choose Luc though. There's something a little off about Gabe to me. He's a little too cold and kinda controlling in a way. I dunno.

Anyways, the book leaves off on a definite cliffhanger and it will be interesting to see what happens next!

HUGELY ANTICIPATING THIS.

Who will Frannie end up with? Luc? Gabe? Or…*gasp* NEITHER OF THEM?

Will Hell takeover Frannie in this book? Or will Heaven keep her? Or even better, she turns un-tagged again?

Lisa Desrocher, I beg you, release this book earlier. Please, for the sake of my sanity.

Just because Luc got away once doesn’t mean that King Lucifer is ready to give up. Hell wants Luc back and they’re prepared to do whatever they can to bring him back and make an example of him.

But with Heaven standing in their way, they will have to pull out all the stops to tag his soul once again. And that means going after the only person that Luc cares about. Frannie Cavanaugh.

And if Frannie is too strong and too protected then they’ll just have find someone close to her who isn’t – one of her friends or maybe her new Guardian. Whatever it takes. Because not everyone can resist a demon’s lure, not even an angel.

***

Original Sin is the absolutely riveting, seductive and irresistible sequel to Personal Demons. In this second book in the series the story is even more gripping, with a new character that will keep readers on edge, the intensity is elevated to a whole new level, and the ending is an exquisite torture.

Even though Frannie loves Luc, enough to have saved him from Hell to keep him with her, she is still torn. She still loves Gabe. She still needs the peace he offers, his comfort and his protection.

But even Gabe knows that she should be with Luc. As much as that thought tears him up inside, he knows that as a Dominion he and Frannie can never be. And so he chooses someone to be her Guardian. Someone he knows cares about Frannie and will make sure to protect her just as he would.

Just because her Guardian is new doesn’t mean he can’t protect Frannie, even with Hell’s demons coming after her to get to Luc. But Gabe never expected King Lucifer to send the most prized weapon in his arsenal.

And he never knew just how wrong things would go or he would have stayed, no matter the risk to himself. Because being claimed by Hell would have been far less great a price to pay than the one that was exacted.

Lisa Desrochers has absolutely done it again. Original Sin is even more intense, more provocative and more electrifying than Personal Demons. The story is a nail-biter and will keep readers tied in knots, long after they’ve reached the final page.

The story switches between each of the main character’s perspectives, giving readers the greatest insight about what’s going on. The author drops enough hints to make readers aware of all that is happening while the characters remain in the dark, building tension and making this an even more torturous and anxiety-filled read.

The story ends in a major cliffhanger that will keep fans of this series in torment until the final book in the series is released.

Original Sin is an absolute must read for fans of stories about dreamy angels, delicious demons, steamy love triangles, and ones that will keep them on edge from beginning to end.

On a personal note:

“Oh, for the Sin of Satan.” Lisa Desrochers is trying to kill me. Absolutely kill me. I would have thought that reading this book twice would take away some of the tension and make me just a little less tortured at the end. Yeah, that didn’t happen.

This book was fan-freaking-tastic. The first time I read it I devoured the book in one night. It was so worth the sleep sacrifice. And with this second read, which I savored over the course of a couple days, I loved it even more.

I don’t know how I’m supposed to wait another year for the next book in the series. Talk about leaving me hanging. That ending is so totally demonic.

Through both reads I was in complete agony. Because the story is told from the different character’s viewpoints, it made it even more torturous. I had all this information and there was nothing I could do about it. I don’t know how many times I screamed for certain characters to just reveal what they knew so that they could figure out what I already had.

It was easy to put the puzzle pieces together to figure out something it took the characters a while to do, but the author dropped a major hint fairly early on, which I caught both times I read it.

I cannot believe how cruel the author was with that ending. If it was just the one part that was left hanging that would be bad enough, but in the last chapter she added in a completely new surprise element.

I could go on and on and on about the ending, but I’ll stop now. And I don’t want to talk about the story itself as anything I mention will be spoiler-y, but I have to talk about a few of my favorite characters. But before I go into a full on ramble, I have to warn you that I am a Luc Cain fan all the way.

I was really nervous before I started this story that Luc would be missing some of the charisma he had in the first book. Even lacking some of his demonic powers, he was just as delectable as ever. And every single moment reading from his viewpoint was a total thrill. He may have been a tormented soul, but he was sexy, brave and still so totally hot.

Frannie was still frustrating, but I love her. But by the end of the book I really felt like I understood her a lot better. What I love about her is that she really tries to do the right thing, usually fails along the way, but comes out on top in the end. She’s not perfect, but she is both strong and fragile and she loves her family and friends.

She got herself into some pretty “interesting” – and by interesting I mean eyebrow raising – situations in this book. And I’m dying to find out about this one thing the author hinted about her, which is yet another total teaser for the next book in the series.

Though Luc is my first love, I do also love Gabe in all his angelic glory. He is not immune to Frannie and is always at risk of a big fall, which makes him much more swoon-worthy. Who wants total perfection? Not me. But as much as I like Gabe, I still really want her to ditch the angel and pick Luc. Sorry Gabe.

Then there was the new Guardian. Can’t say too much about him without being revealing, but I am not a fan. He’s supposed to be a protector. Well, hello epic fail.

I will definitely have to re-read this as I don’t think I can wait a whole year before diving back into Luc, Frannie and Gabe’s world. But I think I’ll start from the first book so I can experience it from the very beginning.

This story is definitely not all full of sweetness and innocence. But, as long as you are prepared to fall in love with a demon and don’t mind a little heat and a little violence in your stories, then this is an amazing book and a definite must read.

3/5 estrellas

A few months ago I read Lisa Desrochers’ book “Personal Demons” and I wasn’t that impressed. Yes, it was ok, and yes it was entertaining (which I guess is actually the point of a book) but it just didn’t have that spark that makes me A. Run out and tell everyone I know to read it, or B. Add it to my “Paranormal Bucket List.” I read it, I smiled a few times and then I put it down and forgot all about it. No harm. No foul. Then…one day at the end of June I came home from work and found a package from Tor Books. “Hell Yeah!!!” was my first thought (because, of course, at my core I am a 13 year old girl) and then (just as quickly) my excitement evaporated (Cue very dramatic music) inside this beautiful white bubbly package was NOT the book I was expecting, instead it was “Original Sin” book #2 in Desrochers’ series. Being the dedicated bookworm that I am however, I buckled down and gave it a chance. Without guts there would be no glory, and if Tor was gracious enough to send me the book by damned I was going to read it!

Now, before I go any further, I want to stress a few things. First… I have (since reading Original Sin) added this book to my “Paranormal Bucket List” so if you are needing a new series to sink your teeth into, I now (unabashedly) give you my blessing. Second…In an effort to not be TOO spoilery I am going to copy the publishers product description instead of writing my own. That is not to say (however) that there WON’T be spoilers so…if you HAVEN’T read “Personal Demons” keep reading at your OWN RISK. (I swear if I get one nasty comment calling me a “book ruiner” I will punch the first bunny I find… you have been warned.)

“Luc Cain was born and raised in Hell, but he isn’t feeling as demonic as usual lately—thanks to Frannie Cavanaugh and the unique power she never realized she had. And not everyone will get out of it alive.”

Ok, semantics out of the way, lets get down to business.

Unlike in the first book, “Original Sin” had depth. As with many “firsts” in a series the author is trying to establish the characters. There is (of course) a plot but at moments it will disappear while the author takes a moment to present a flashback or a few pages of internal dialogue (meant to inform the reader of the characters personality) All of these are necessary, but like I said before can draw attention away from the “action.” In OS this was NOT the case. As a matter of fact OS was completely plot driven and (ultimately) action packed from page 1. There were a few new characters, (again…natural for a series) but unlike in “Personal Demons” their background was built-in to whichever predicament the heroes/heroines found themselves immersed.

Another, VERY IMPORTANT aspect of this book (vs. PD) was Desrochers’ ability to write pain. As a person who thrives on being tethered to the worlds I am reading about, I find it difficult to rave about a book that I didn’t feel emotionally attached to (whether it be through humor or hurt.) If the writing is unconvincing in its genuineness it will fall flat and no matter how hard you try you will (more often than not) miss the entire point of the book. OS was the poster child for “emotional rollercoaster” and in being so made me feel like I was reading about someone, (whose life) I cared about versus just a bunch of words on a page.

Were there flaws in “Original Sin” of course, no book is perfect…Matt (the brother) tended to repeat himself more than necessary, Luc’s angst got a little wild in points, and Frannie’s (somewhat sporatic) whining made me want to stick duct-tape over her mouth, but none of these were enough to make me throw the book across the room, or roll my eyes, (which translates into: guess it wasn’t that bad.)

All in all… a FANTASTIC second book in a series I felt was doomed to a bad shelf-life.

This one is a para-junkies dream folks!

Happy Reading my fellow Kindle-ites and remember: It’s not just big brothers that are a total pain in the ass.. the little ones have their own share of problems.

As many of you probably already know from my constant swooning, I fell head over heels in love with Personal Demons (and Luc) and had been dying to get my hands on the sequel since the second I finished book one. I'm so grateful to Lisa for sending me a copy so I could start my fangirling early. I knew that Original Sin was going to be absolutely amazing, but oh my goodness, this book surpassed all of my expectations.

I can't say enough how much I love Lisa's writing. She flawlessly captures a believable teen voice and manages to do this for more than just one character. We're able to see through Frannie, Luc and now Matt's eyes and it's such an amazing experience. They see things completely different from one another so it's like having an all access pass into their world. I was able to understand why Frannie loves Luc so much, how Luc will do anything for her and Matt's not approving thought's on his sister, Frannie's, life.

Frannie is just such a kick butt main character. Just like the first book, she grows tremendously as a person in Original Sin. I love how she doesn't take crap from anyone and is secure enough in herself to know what she wants. Even though she does have her strong characteristics, Frannie also has things she struggles with too just like every teenager, which makes me love her even more. She is definitely a fantastic role model for any teen.

Okay, now onto Luc who is the definition of everything any girl could ask for. One of the main reasons I love him as a chracter so much is because even though he's a hot-demon-now-turned-human I can still relate to his feelings and situations. Luc was more conflicted in book two about his relationship with Frannie and he also transformed into this tremendously selfless person. Don't get me wrong, he still has his bad boy moments, but his gentleman side shows even more in this book. He treats Frannie so sweetly and he wants nothing more than to keep her safe. Their relationship is just absolutely amazing.

In Personal Demons I couldn't see how there was any competition between Luc and Gabe, but in Original Sin there were so many moments where I found myself thinking Go for Gabe! I got to see the more human side of Gabe, which made me really like him and see how Frannie is sometimes conflicted in her decision. I loved how Lisa really put me into Frannie's shoes and had me loving both of the guys.

It's so hard to say this because all the characters are amazing, but by a teeny, tiny, bit I think Matt was my favorite character in this book. He was such a unique and dynamic character. I loved where his actions took the plot and then of course the jaw dropping factor he brought. One of my favorite times that I spent inside Matt's head is when he was with Lili, Luc's new next door neighbor. It was really awesome being inside of a guy's head while he fell for someone.

The plot in this book was insane. I mean there were tons of twists and turns but there was never a moment where I felt I was being rushed. Lisa gave me enough time to pick my jaw up off the floor, then just have it drop right back down there again. I loved it!! Almost every surprise that came out of this book I had NO idea that it was coming. I mean I am still in shock and I read it for the first time months ago!

The only problem I had with the book was the ending. Why, oh why did it have to end!? Seriously, can we just have a never ending book that follows Frannie and Luc's life that will last our lifetime? The ending was full of suspense and left me flipping out!

Awesome Quote:
"There's this guy, Alexander Graham Bell. He invented this thing called the telephone. you really should get one. They're all the rage."

Characters: 5/5
Creativity: 5/5
Voice: 5/5
Plot: 5/5
Impact: 5/5
Overall: 5/5

Original Sin is an incredibly written book that takes you into the lives of three teens in very uncommon circumstances. Lisa Desrochers' writing is authentic and mind blowing, which is just one of the reasons this book is one of my favorites. The plot is full of surprises and the ending will surely shock you. Absolutely everyone must read this book, it doesn't matter your age or gender, I guarantee anyone who breathes will love this book!

Original Sin is a story that beautifully escapes the snare second books in a series sometimes fall prey to, increasing the emotional intensity and physical action while also answering some of our lingering questions from book one before forcing us to ask new ones. While Personal Demons had a bit of a lighter feel and some rather spectacular romantic waffling on Frannie's part, this second installment shows us some significant character growth while introducing new elements that never let us forget we're reading a story that deals with demons. There are darker and more serious undertones this time around, trapping us in a bubble of tension and unease as every character's most minute action proves to have a serious ripple effect on those around them. We devour the pages as the divide between good and evil becomes not so clearly delineated, and decisions are made that cause fissures to form in our hearts, waiting for the slightest of provocations to crack them wide open and send us reeling.

Frannie, a difficult young woman to like in the first book due to her constant indecision with regard to Luc and Gabe, is remarkably more mature in majority of Original Sin. Content with her relationship with Luc, we are spared her incessant pining for Gabe and her frustrating habit of shedding clothes whenever in the presence of either one of them. She attempts to better understand her Sway while also coping with the difficulties and dangers of her new celestial and demon-tainted existence. Toward the end some of her newfound growth does begin to dissolve under the emotional onslaught of certain events, and though she resorts to some familiarly bothersome behavior, we are able to take comfort in the thoughts and actions we've witnessed throughout most of the book, hoping we'll only see more of them in the future.

Ms. Desrochers spares us no drama in this story, spending the beginning hundred or so pages getting us reacquainted with the characters and allowing us to bask in the warmth emanating from Luc and Frannie, their incandescence spreading from the pages to our tingling fingertips before those crackling sparks are doused with a deliciously painful turn of events. Their relationship in Personal Demons was superficially enjoyable and full of angst, but Ms. Desrochers manages to draw us under the surface in Original Sin, ensuring we have a vested interest in their happiness before unleashing a barrage of tests that threaten everything we've just come to hold dear. This unpredictability is welcome despite the pain it causes, and we find ourselves appreciating the new darkness as it obscures our vision and keeps us on edge wondering what torment might come next.

One small drawback in this installment is the addition of Matt's point of view to both Luc and Frannie's, his selfishness and disregard for his sister's wishes slightly off-putting until we reach the end and better understand the role he is to play, but up to that point we read his scenes quickly in the hope of returning to Luc and Frannie as soon as possible. In spite of that drawback as well as some continuing issues with Frannie, Original Sin is a highly entertaining read and one full of interesting twists that have us looking to the future with guts clenched and muscles held rigid as we wait to see what Heaven and Hell hold in store for those of us on the mortal coil.

I go back and forth on this series. My first reaction is to roll my eyes. The plot and characters are over the top and a bit silly at times - although not purposely so. I especially find the use of Hell cliches to be overdone and somewhat annoying. I also hate that Grandpa says "Ya" instead of "You." That being said, if I put my surface-level level frustrations aside, I really like this series. Personal Demons was a fast paced story with a steamy romance between Frannie and Luc and a potential one between Frannie and Gabriel. Original Sin is just as interesting and the romance goes up a notch.

Frannie has a new guardian angel, her brother Matt who died as a child. Everyone is thrilled about this. Frannie gets to be with her brother for the first time in 10 years. Matt has a cush angel job. Gabriel and Luc know that Matt will watch Frannie like a hawk. Or will he? It seems that being in the human world is fraught with challenges for a newly-minted guardian angel. Matt can still hate, love, lust, and envy. Those combination of emotions make for a much more compromised guardian than anyone expected. I love how the author has created angels who are not always angelic. We see this somewhat with Gabriel who can barely keep himself away from Frannie. But the capacity for human emotions and mistakes is much more apparent with Matt. A nice twist on standard angel mythology.

Luc became human at the end of Personal Demons. Hell is less than thrilled about this. Hell bent on revenge, you might say (eek...even I'm starting to use the Hell cliches). We get to know the various demons better. We see just how devious they can be in enticing people to sin.

I love Luc. I do miss the arrogant demon, but as a human, he's such a sweet guy - so devoted to Frannie. Unfortunately, King Lucifer didn't become lord of Hell by being stupid, so he knows just how to concoct a scenario that has the potential to bring down Luc and destroy his relationship with Frannie.

And then there's Gabriel. I like that he's an angel, but seems human as well. I wish they'd explored the history between Luc and Gabe better. I hope future books do that. Gabriel is actually gone for much of this book. The love triangle was more of a straight line. This was different from many second novels, which is where love triangles often develop or strengthen. I like that the author did something different. I also like that this isn't exactly a love triangle. Frannie isn't torn between Luc and Gabe, but there's still something there. More intriguing.

I'm not a huge fan of Frannie. I'm not sure why. I like that she's a forthright, take-charge girl in most parts of her life. She does what she feels to be right and isn't purely stuck on a guy. At the same time, she seems so wishy washy in her feelings for Luc and Gabe. This is understandable, but still annoying.

Overall, Original Sin is just as fun as Personal Demons. It moves the plot of the series along nicely. It does drag at times, but mostly it's a good pace. I really like how the book diverges from the typical paranormal path in many areas. It shows the importance of choice as well as the consequences. I was also pleased that the book answered some of my questions about Frannie's family - quite interesting. The ending leaves us ready and waiting for Book 3.

Personal Demons was a steamy, passionate ride and Original Sin perfected it. Frannie, Luc, and the gang are back and flourish with an unique and page-turning plot. The enemies are deliciously bad, the good guys are flawed and the dual points of view were just as good the second time around. Original Sin is everything I wanted in a sequel and more!

Frannie continues to be a capable heroine in this next installment of the novel. I liked in the first novel that she was strong and able to hold her own. In this newest installment, Frannie is in a transitional stage. She's learning about her new found powers and is struggling to come to terms with what they mean for her life. While she still has her physical strength, Frannie is incredible lost and therefore, she is emotionally weak. I found myself wishing she believed in herself a bit more and was able to control her emotions. She tended to make reckless decisions in her emotional state which frustrated me at times because she knows better. However, most of her plans seem full proof to me at the time she's hatching them so I can't say too much here.

On the same note, Luc made several bad decisions but his overall journey was a pleasant one for me. I liked seeing him venerable. It's interesting to see a character that has had so much power for so long be wrought almost helpless in that sense. I liked seeing how he reacted even without his super powers. He did his best and it was admirable. His chapters really worked to balance out Frannie's overly emotional ones and it was interesting to watch him struggle not to succumb to some of the traps their new enemies laid for him.

Matt's perspective was essential and frustrating. Luckily, it seems that Ms. Desrochers was striving for this and in that, she succeeded. Matt provided a nice low note to Frannie and Luc's high. But what's more, his path was so completely sad. Without saying too much, I wanted what Frannie wanted for him and even though his love interest seemed almost too good to be true, I wanted it for him because I wanted him to be happy (though I mostly wanted him happy so he'd butt out of Frannie's happiness).

For some reason, I was expecting the same old enemies under a barely new hat but what I got was drastically different. These new enemies that Ms. Desrochers threw at her characters were devious in a whole slew of new ways. While I found their powers infuriating at times, it definitely helped weave a fast paced plot. By the time I reached the halfway point in the novel, I found it impossible to put down and needed to know what happened to these characters, good or bad. We are also greeted with the same charmingly sarcastic and witty writing as the first novel. Derochers manages to steamy up the page even further, taking "hotter than Hell" to an entirely new (and welcome) dimension.

No doubt about it, Original Sin is sinfully good, hitting all the right notes. Combining the same characters we feel in love with the first time around with an entirely new breed of bad and a plot that whips around the reader at every corner, it's hard to put down. Like Luc, the ending will leave you wanting more and I'm willing to bet the next installment will absolutely deliver!

The word epic is not enough to describe how much i loved this book!

In personal Demons we are back in Frannie still beeing in a dangerous situation but having more allies to her side now : Luc, as human, Gabe even that he is leaving (no no dont cry he will return much later) and the return of a familiar face her brother Matt.

It all begins when a new character called Lili (sounds familiar?) comes and stay to the appartment next to Luc. At the same time that Gabe left (you will get your answer later) leaving Matt as Frannies guarding angel to be there instead... and then the beautiful ride begins.

I loved Original Sin but Personal Demons was beyond what i was expected : It was awesome!

It has much more details in the surrounding characters such as Frannie's family, her friends, more details about Gabe and Luc relationship, more steamy scenes more action scenes.. How many times i will use more?It was awesome!

I wish i could be able to write more without revealing too much about what happend but i simply cant!

Lisa Desrochers is pure genius. I don't think I can muster up the words to express how much I loved and enjoyed reading Original Sin. The Personal Demons series is smokin' hot and a must read for YA lovers! Original Sin makes you feel sad, happy, angry, shocked, and excited all in one book! Lisa's writing is truly amazing and I felt every word and scene as the characters did.

I'm team Luc all the way, but when Gabe left Frannie it was sad, because she loves Gabe too. Although Frannie knows that nothing can come between her and Luc, she still has that connection to Gabe and she feels as if there is a piece of her missing. I really enjoy the emotion Lisa brought into Original Sin. You feel more of the sadness and pain than you do in the first book, and although you don't WANT sadness and pain, it adds so much to Luc and Frannie's incredible journey.

A couple new characters are introduced. There is Lili, a shy and reserved type of girl who moves into Luc's neighborhood, and Rhenorian, a demon set on bringing Luc back to Hell. Then there is Frannie's new guardian angel, whose name must not be spoken of because it will spoil the first book. This angel is happy to be helping Frannie and Luc...or maybe just Frannie, until he meets Lili and even he can't seem to focus on what his duties are.

I loved all the characters, new and old, in this book. There were plenty of demons and I love how they are described in such detail...so much I feel like I am in the book facing them myself! Sometimes I think its hard to picture a character as the author would see them, but when it is done with Lisa's precision, its perfecto!

I also don't know if I've mentioned that Luc is totally hot *swoon*. I'm a sucker for bad boys and if you were team Gabe in Personal Demons, I think that Original Sin will give you a run for your money...well part of the book anyways, just wait until the second half!!

Original Sin is filled with steamy relationships, crazy twists, action, and shocking outcomes. I really rate this book a million stars out of 5, haha, but 5 is all I can fit! I CAN'T wait for the next book and I hope you YA lovers pick up your copy of Personal Demons and Original Sin (releases July 5, 2010)!!!

This isn't a review. I just couldn't write one.

I liked Personal Demons a lot. Especially because of Luc and Gabe. I didn't really care that much for Original Sin though. I'll try to explain my jumbled up thoughts here:

1. I couldn't connect with Frannie. At some point I started to get really annoyed with her. Frannie made stupid, reckless decisions that would hurt her friends for no reason besides that she wants it. (Like with Gabe...)

2. I liked the clever Luc that had me laughing out loud. This Luc didn't really make me feel anything. He was a bit (and I hate thinking this) boring. He was so in love with Frannie and so good that I couldn't believe he was a demon. What happened to my bad boy?

3. Matt... He was the initial reason I didn't like the story. Everything about Matt's storyline had me not liking him. I thought he really should have known better since he's been training for so long. Not just with the Lili thing, the Luc thing too. I also found it funny that near the end no one even mentions Matt anymore.

4. As not to spoil, I haven't include the name. This character is meant to be a twist but I suspected the twist very early on so the rest of the story was me waiting for everyone else to catch on. This is probably a me thing though. I'm not sure how it would affect others.

5. Was it just me or was this book dripping in lust? Nothing was really graphic and some points were needed but I felt like there was just too many kisses for any of them to be shocking or special. I know- demons dude. That means they're tempting and naughty and usually I'm fine with that. I have no idea why I didn't like it in Original Sin. It was certainly much darker than Personal Demons.

6. I'm not sure if I saw any character growth. We only got to know the main characters who's point of views the story was narrated in with the exception of Gabe so other characters were basically not explained much. Frannie's best friends felt like strangers to me.

I'll stop there. Original Sin wasn't really a bad story. It just wasn't a story that appeale to me personally. I've seen many glowing, happy reviews and I wish I also felt that way. There were good stuff. The romance was done well with the Gabe and Luc thing. I really like Gabe's character. The premise is still addictive. I'll probably read the next book out of curiosity. And because these books are a guilty pleasure.

More reviews at A Reader Under The Sea

NOTE: This is a second book in a series. I advice you to check out my review of the first book (click here).

Pure genius!! It's one of the most marvelous sequels in book series' that I have ever read. It brings out all the emotions. There were tears, happiness, and laughter. But overall, it will make you want the third book in a heartbeat.

I actually read this book in one sitting because I NEEDED to know what was going to happen! It was a super quick read. There are just so many twists and turns that keep you guessing 'til the last page. And there was such a shocking scene that was too much. It had me bawling my eyes out!! It was frustrating. It made me want to toss the book to the wall. But I don't do that to my books.

I did enjoy reading about Frannie, Luc, and Gabe again.

Frannie has come a long way since the first book and she continues to be a favorite main character of mine. Luc is still sexy as hell but I wanted to throttle him. And he just made things complicated. But I know that he is not to be completely blamed. But still. And then there is Gabe, the sophisticated protector and sexy too.

We meet a new character named Lilith and I didn't like her one bit. And I knew she was going to be a problem. Her act of innocence was not something I believed. And I'm sure maybe most of you will figure out who she is because of *cough* her name *cough.*

The ending is such a big cliffhanger. I was just glad that the third and sadly, final book in the series was already out. Because I needed it so bad. It's just completely madness and addictive. You'll definitely want to give this a go!!

Review originally posted at The Starry-Eyed Revue.

First things first, don't do like I did and read all the teasers the author posted on her blog and ruin the first half of the book for yourself. [To avoid temptation, I'm not linking to the author's blog. :)]

That said, once I got past all of the stuff that I'd already figured out based on the teasers, the story really did attain 'un-put-downable' status. The Personal Demons books are light, quick reads with a touch of smuttiness that makes them all the more fun to read, but that's not to say that they don't have an intriguing storyline. There's plenty of action, betrayal, and general lustiness to keep you reading and wishing that the third installment was already out.

The second book in a series is always good for some new characters, and Original Sin definitely delivers in that department. Frannie is still trying to decipher her feelings for Gabe while she's joined at the hip to Luc, but the author has now thrown in Frannie's twin brother Matt as her guardian angel, Rhenorian (Luc's, ahem, friend from the Fiery Pit), and new-to-town Lili to shake things up. If you thought the love triangle was trying before, just wait...it's more like a love PENTAGON now.

However, with these new characters comes another narrator in the form of Matt and yet another reason to have to keep flipping back pages to see who's talking now. It did get confusing at times because the switch in narration happened rather quickly, often within a chapter as opposed to at the start of each new chapter. Just a word of warning to those who dislike narratives told in this fashion.

If you don't like love triangles or flips in the narration, this series might not be for you, but it's one of my guilty pleasures. It's fun and definitely worth a look if you're in the mood for something light and fluffy.

I cannot write this review without saying WOW about five hundred times. WOW! Original Sin was just...WOW! If you thought Personal Demons was good, just wait until you get your hands on Original Sin. It's definitely for a much more mature audience. I would say for readers ages sixteen and up.

I kept reading reviews where everyone basically said how "hot and steamy" this book is. They are not WRONG! I was actually shocked at how "HOT and STEAMY" Original Sin is. I loved it! Every single thing about it! I loved how it was from Frannie, Luc, and Matt's point of view. It was so nice getting inside their heads. I am so TEAM Luc! I love everything about him.

There is nothing this book lacked. It gave me every single emotion I look for when reading a book. It was sad, funny, suspenseful, shocking...everything! I read Original Sin in one sitting. I could not put it down. And when I did put it down, all I did was think about it. I am still thinking about it and it's days later.

The only issue I had was the love triangle. I wasn't a huge fan of the love triangle in Personal Demons, and I wasn't a fan of it in Original Sin. Though I will say that Desrochers didn't focus as much on the love triangle in Original Sin as she did in Personal Demons. So it was a bit bearable this time. I felt that Frannie was punishing Luc for something she was practically doing too. You have to read the book to know what I am talking about. But their relationship is just so heart breaking and heart warming at the same time. Love it!

I am so sad I have to wait til next year to find out what's next! This book is just WOW! One big ball of EVERYTHING! If you haven't read Personal Demons, I recommend you do. Then buy Original Sin and come back here and let's talk sexy demons! This series is A MUST READ!
