Founded by a group of former Navy SEALS, the Alpha Pack is a top-secret team of wolf shifters with Psy powers tasked with eliminating the most dangerous predators in the world. But the gift of their abilities comes at a price…
After a massacre decimates half his team and leaves him crippled, Jaxon Law must relearn how to fight—and battle the anger and guilt threatening to overwhelm him. But when he rescues a beautiful woman who reawakens his primal instincts, Jax is unprepared for the dangers that lie ahead.
On the run from her employer, brilliant lab assistant Kira Locke has evidence that leads the Alpha Pack on a hunt for someone targeting human civilians with Psy abilities. USA Today Bestselling Author J.D. Tyler is best known for her dark, sexy paranormal series Alpha Pack, and the Firefighters of Station Five and Sugarland Blue series as National Bestselling Author Jo Davis. PRIMAL LAW, the first book in her Alpha Pack series, is the winner of the National Readers' Choice Award in Paranormal. She's also been a multiple finalist in the National Readers' Choice Awards, the Colorado Romance Writers Award of Excellence, a finalist for the Bookseller's Best Award, has captured the HOLT Medallion Award of Merit, has been two-time nominee for the Australian Romance Readers Award in romantic suspense, and had one book optioned as a major motion picture.
When she isn’t writing, J.D.’s idea of a good time certainly isn’t cleaning house (sniff), bungee jumping (not in this lifetime, or the next), or camping (her idea of “roughing it” is a slow bellboy). She enjoys reading, being pampered like the diva she is, and spending time with her awesome family. J.D. lives in Texas with her two grown kids, two cats, and a Boston terrier, all of them horribly spoiled. Visit her website at www.JDTyler.com.
There are few things I find sillier than books that haphazardly mix popular romance tropes. The thought process goes something like this: “if readers like heroes that are shifters, Navy SEALs, have psychic powers, belong to a brotherhood of men fighting evil and have fated mates, wouldn’t they love a hero who is/has ALL of the above?” **eye roll** I know it’s fantasy but to take a story seriously, I need to see some internal logic.
Kyra meets Jax after he saves her from an attack. After learning his secret, she’s quickly ensconced to the compound where she’s offered a job. Kyra takes to the paranormal in stride and without any knowledge of the situation, she quickly starts bossing people around regarding the care of some creatures there. Of course, her caring disposition works miracles. *snorts*
This series also has my most hated trope: the man who needs the woman to survive but she doesn’t need him back (meaning, if she doesn’t have him, he kicks the bucket/suffers for eternity.) I don’t know why this is so popular in PNR. I thought in this day and age we all agreed that coercion and enslavement weren’t good things in relationships.
Even though I wasn’t crazy about this book (understatement of the year!), I’m intrigued about the way it ended so I may pick up the next one.
This review appears on Badass Book Reviews in our new Read with Caution feature.
The premise of the story...Five years ago, a group of Navy Seals were out on a mission in Afghanistan and were attacked by a pack of rogue werewolves, the ones who survived became wolf shifters themselves and are now part of a group called Alpha Pack...their job now is to protect the human race from all the naughty creatures that go bump in the night. Apparently everyone in this group of soldiers had some sort of "psy ability" that was enhanced once they became wolf shifters...there is a telepath, a firestarter, a precog, a retrocog, one who can see dead people, etc..
I'm not sure that the storyline was necessarily anything overly unique but it was extremely enjoyable..especially for a first book in a series which can sometimes suffer from "1st book syndrome"...being somewhat boring and bogged down with information overload. This was not the case here. I'll admit, i was not a big fan of her Firefighters of Station Five series, written as Jo Davis...i only got through book two and had no interest in continuing on with the rest, not really sure why...it just didn't do anything for me. For some reason this series, or this book i should say, since i've only read the one so far, was GREAT! It was a fast paced, interesting, suspenseful storyline, it had a few emotional moments and there were a lot of HOT and sexy parts too!!
Jax and Kira, the couple in this book, had a believable and explosive attraction and all the supporting characters were also great..i would love to read a book for each and everyone of them...even Sariel, the Fae Prince!! I love a series that focuses on a group of guys who are like brothers...the camaraderie, their banter and the way they have each others' backs just makes a story that much more fun! I'm also BIG sucker for the whole "one mate for life" story lines too, which is why i LOVE shifters!!
Anyone who loves paranormal romances, especially shifter romances should check this one out! It's good! Definitely good enough that i would recommend it to my friends! You have hot Navy SEALS who shift into wolves, who also happen to have extra special abilities thrown into the mix and a few extra yummy guys that you'll also meet long the way...what more could you ask for!? ;)
Love triangle? Cheating? HEA? Any Descriptive Sex w/OW/OM/Ex? Would I read more by this author/or in this series? Maybe, but not for now. Rating: 1 stars
Review
I really don't like to see H whore through the book!
Being certain that there is something fishy about a secret project being done at her gene therapy company, lab assistant Kira Locke, steals some samples to find out just what. But her escape doesn't go quite as planned and her world gets a whole heck of a lot weirder when she is rescued from certain death by a wolf, who is also a sexy man, Jaxon Law, and is introduced to the the wold of the paranormal since her new knowledge makes her a 'guest' of the former soldiers, now shifters, who comprise the Alpha Pack.
Where to start... First of all I didn't hate Tyler's new Alpha Pack series starter - just wanted to say that up front before I started with my nits - I suspect that most of my frustration with Primal Law came from the fact that there were seeds of promise here. However, as much as I try to avoid being negative, I had a whole slew of small stuff which, for me, got in the way of liking it enough to give it more stars.
First books in a series - especially ones with one-couple-per-book romances - are notoriously tough, but my biggest nit was that world built here was one of those kitchen sink ones - you know 'threw in everything but'. Tyler's world had potential with shifters (both born and turned), vampires (mention only so far), witches, sorcerers, an exiled Fae prince and an evil company doing gene tinkering with humans but, at least what we've learned of that world so far, lacked the glue to keep it from being a mishmash of psychic powers, magic and technology. All of this could have worked but I really needed an explanation of why and how - maybe a thread with an evil scientist talking about his work to connect the dots for me. The lead in this one has two powers, three if you count shape-shifting into a wolf - one psychic, a post-cognitive gift which allows Jaxon to see the past of people he touches, and a more magical one - the ability to rewind time back a few minutes. There's also another character, Kalen Black - who I liked by the way - who is a sorcerer, who is also a necromancer and can also shift into a jaguar. And then there's Kira's evil company doing gene altering experiments to change humans into shifters. All of this could have worked but I really needed an explanation of why and how – maybe a thread with an evil scientist talking about his work to connect the dots for me.
I think the world building got in the way of the romance as well. There is plenty of steamy stuff - Tyler writes other romances as Jo Davis and erotic romances as Jo Carlise, and her erotic roots are apparent here in the frequency, length, and detail (and a wee bit of language) of the sex scenes. But since the powerful pull of the mating bond does most of the work to jump the romance into the steamy stuff and the fact that in this 'world' it is literally mate bond or die for the hero, I felt the attraction between the starring pair, but I never really connected with Kira and Jaxon or felt the shift from lust to 'love'.
When added to my frustration with the precog leader who for the most part won't use that foreknowledge and my disbelief in the former military Alpha's lax security standards about who they allow to wander about their compound and how they make decisions to set potentially dangerous prisoners free (and an ending that was telegraphed from about midway through the story) and the result was that for me Primal Law ended up being okay. However, even though Primal Law had some rough edges, all that ambitious world building still offers potential for the Alpha series as a whole and I think that Tyler may still pull this together in the next book, and since I am interested some of the other leading men-to-be (Kalen in particular), I will likely give this series another shot.
I loved this book! Yes another shifter book, but I don't care. Jaxon is a shifter with special abilities. I really like the way that they shifters were described in this book. I like that their unique abilities that aren't usually associated with shifter, vamps sure but not shifters. I mean shooting fire out of your hands? Bending time? Loved that all the guys were hot but more in a rough sexy way. Kira was so funny. I liked the way that she spoke her mind and she was compassionate to the other creature. Kira was a little spit fire. Like that they weren't in love in right away. Didn't mate just because it was expected of them .
Yes there is just about every paranormal creature in here. But it wasn't like lets talk about all of them and drag this story on. Nope there were there, they were mentioned and even talked about a bit. Nothing heavy that made this story feel bogged down. I am now more curious about the experiments going and what will happen next.
I enjoyed Jo Davis's firemen series and so when I found out this was her's as well. I had to give it a try. I really enjoyed all the side characters. I hope they all get a book. OMG poor Aric. Yeah now I know why his book is next. Talk about a hard choice to make . But I cant blame Jaxon for what he did in the end. But I bet its eating at him though. Nick better have a book. Im just sayin.. Overall great start to a new series!!
I kind of liked it but.... I listened to the Audible version of this book which I like to do when I have a lot of hands on things to do, like mending, cooking, or laundry. My first complaint was the narrator. I just think she put a lot of the wrong kind of inflections for different characters so they would sound snooty when they were supposed to sound sexy, or sexy when they should have sounded apprehensive. It left me thinking several times during the book "That doesn't sound like the appropriate response."
My second complaint is about Kira's actions. Inconsistencies everywhere. I mean everywhere. One minute she's absolutely terrified of this Shifter and the next she's trying to get a job at his company. Kira's got the super hots for this werewolf then allows another were to kiss her deeply. Finally when she realizes she and Jax have chemistry together she hates the idea of chemistry and denies her mating lust and I guess I shouldn't say any more about that cause it might spoil it for somebody. Jax isn't perfect by far but I think Kira shifts around so much in her actions and thinking I could hardly keep up.
Now the sex in this story was hot and steamy and dreamy and cream**. Plus there were some moments of connection between Kira and Jax that made up for some of the negative parts but I'm still giving it 3 star because Kira just didn't act like the same person all through the story plus having too many answers for too many unanswerable questions.
Jaxon Law is a member of the Alpha Pack, an elite unit of former Navy SEALs turned wolf shifters on a mission. Out on the town one night, he and his fellow pack members come across Kira Locke, a woman on the run from her nefarious employer. Jax and Kira's attraction is immediate and as they get to know one another, the reason why becomes all too clear...
Another series that takes every paranormal trope known to man and shoves it all into one book: Navy SEALs and shifters and psychics and fae and witches. The only thing missing is the kitchen sink - not good!
The writing is plodding with dialogue similar in its ridiculousness to J. R. Ward's BDB series, the plot is predictable and the romance feels forced. Wait . . . it is forced because Jax will literally die if Kira doesn't mate him.
Unfortunately, there is little to encourage me to continue with the series.
ETA: Just learned that J.D. Tyler is a pseudonym for Jo Davis. This explains my difficulty with the book as her Firefighters of Station Five series was a flop for me too.
3-3.5 stars. I enjoyed the overall story, but there were things that happened in this book that I felt just happened way too easily & too fast. However, I did like it enough to continue with the series and I enjoyed the secondary characters as well. I'm really hoping it does get better in the future books.
Jo Davis is one of my favorite authors. I absolutely LOVED her FIREFIGHTERS OF STATION FIVE series and I couldn't wait to get my hands on Primal Law and of course, she did not disappoint. Her first Paranormal Romance written under her pseudonym, J.D. Tyler, was just as amazing as the rest of her books. Primal Law, the first book in the new Alpha Pack series had a great plot line, great characters and of course smokin' hot love scenes.
Jaxon Law is man scorned by betrayal and weighed down by the guilt of the death of his team mates and leader. He does not trust anyone outside his brothers, the Alpha Pack and is determined never to mate and trust a woman again.
Kira is a scientist working at New Life Technology. While employed, she starts to notice the suspicious behaviors of her employers and starts snooping around. She steals small canisters of what seems to be of skin samples that she believes and hopes will reveal the horrible secret she feels her employer is hiding and gets chased out side and then caught.
Enter Jax and the Alpha Pack team to the rescue. Jaxon Law (former Navy SEAL) is a Grey Wolf, RetroCog and Time-Bender. Jax hears Kira's screams and immediately responds. He sees 2 men attacking her and his wolf goes crazy. Although he has no idea why his wolf and he are taking the attack so personal, he shifts to wolf and kills both men. Jax then shifts back to man in front of Kira and they take her back to the Alpha Pack headquarters to figure out who is trying to kill her and why, as well as make sure she won't reveal their secrets.
Jax and Kira have an instant attraction to one another. Jax is scared to put his faith and trust into another woman after the last woman he thought he loved was responsible for trapping Jax and the Alpha Pack and killing 4 of the team members while the others struggled and fought for their lives.
Kira is thrust into a world she never could have imagined existed. She discovers she is Jax's mate and does not want to me mated because it's their fate. She wants to be mated because they love each other.
I really loved how they worked at their relationship and it wasn't instant love. They learned to trust in each other and then eventually fell in love.
I also fell in love with all of the men from Alpha Pack.
Nick Westfall - The new Team Leader of Alpha Pack is a White Wolf, Empath and PreCog. Nick carries the burden of knowing the fates of his men, yet because of a tragic past mistake he won’t interfere with destiny or free will.
Aric Savage - Red Wolf, Firestarter and Telekinetic. Aric harbors a terrible resentment of his shifting and Psy abilities, and sees them as a curse.
Kalen Black - is the newest and youngest member of the Alpha Pack. Black Panther, Sorcerer and Necromancer and the only known shifter of his kind.
“Hammer” - Grey Wolf, Tracer—Only Nick knows the mysterious giant’s real name.
Zander Cole - Black Wolf and Healer—Zander nearly killed himself trying to save his teammates in the aftermath of the Noble massacre. Of all the survivors, he’s the one not dealing with the tragedy and is a cause for grave worry among the others.
Ryon Hunter - Silver Wolf, Channeler and Telepath—Ryon is an original team member whose “sixth sense” gives the catch-phrase “I see dead people” a whole new meaning.
Everyone one of these men steals your heart and leaves you anticipating his book. Next up is a novella on Kalen Black and then Aric Savage's book will be released in April.
So, all in all…….I LOVED this book and it was an excellent start to a great new series.
Fun, steamy treat! Primal law introduces a new paranormal world that has everything - from royal fairies to shape shifting alphas and magic wielding hotties. This was my first J.D. Tyler story and I'm already ordering the rest of the series. The author's style is easily palatable, devoid of too many unnecessary descriptions and inter musing, the plot flows smoothly and the characters (although kindly familiar) are light and fun. A great Saturday afternoon read :)
First of all.... look at that cover and tell me you dont want to get that book??!! *waggles eyebrows* The Alpha Pack is home to some extremely alpha males, no pun intended. A group of Navy SEALS who were attacked by werewolves while on a mission and were turned, now continue on their military activities but policing the supernaturals.
But these are no ordinary shifters. They each have a psychic ability, some can go back in time, some are pyrokinetic, some can see the future. Whatever their ability is they are hot sexy males. And you can imagine what happens when you try to put all those alpha males under the same roof. Yeah, my kind of book.
This book was witty and funny, action packed and hella smoking!
Kira finds herself in the middle of an operation that's doing tests on shifters and the Alpha Pack jumps in to save her and maybe use that information to the benefit of their operation.
And of course, these wolves mate for life and Jaxon recognizes Kira as his mate. Kira was funny and for the most part a very likeable heroine, and Jaxon, well there are just no words. He's perfection. Larger than life, alpha, possessive male. Growling and punching included.
My favorite part of the book (and the series) was the dynamic and personality of the whole team. Those guys are awesome together!!! Each has their appeal and I want them all to get their own books. I can't wait to read more about all of them, even the new additions. And I really can't wait for Aric's book, and not just because of the hot cover.
I guess I read this book back in 2014 and to be honest I couldn’t remember it at all. And listening nothing really jogged my memory of it. So it felt like a completely new book to me.
That being said I rated it a 5 then and today I am going to rate it a 4. I really enjoyed the book don’t get me wrong but there are things I am kind of scratching my head about. Jax and Kira, I love that she challenges him and that she isn’t afraid of him, well she was that her instinct about him really was spot on.
I am not a fan of the doctor and I get it she has a past but her attitude got me all protective of Kira. And I know she didn’t need it because she actually liked the doc but for me, something about her just rubs me the wrong way.
Jax getting his feeling hurt when Kira was venting out her emotion I wanted to smack him and be like ‘dude, this whole thing has tilted her world upside down, give her a freaking break’ but of course I can’t smack characters lol.
Overall I enjoyed the setup, and all the new secondary characters and what the books based on. Think I might have to do book 2 to see how it’s all is coming along. Because of this book just kind of sets up the series. I did like how smoken hot the scenes were not going to like I love that about shifter books the hotter the better I say.
The narration was good it took a little bit to get used to be she does a great job keeping you engaged in the story.
*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*
Alpha males, different kinds of supernatural creatures and powers, action, humor, romance, kick ass organizations (I have a soft spot for modern compounds, big groups of badass guys, dangerous missions and such - I'm an action movies girl!)... the whole package! I was a bit annoyed with the ending, I felt the story could have been more plot-wise, and the characters needed a bit more depth and layers (I know it's unfair but I've been ruined by Nalini Singh's stories and everything else seems lacking) but overall, I really enjoyed this book.
Reading paranormal romances has become my go to reads when I am just exhausted. They are normally fun, entertaining, easy reads that I can get through quickly.
This one though...OMG. I could not help myself making notes on my ebook version everything something was inconsistent, didn't make sense, or an example of sloppy research (read "no research") by the author.
My first note was on page 16, and in 240 pages I made 45 notes. That is one note every 5.3 pages!!! Yeah...at a certain point (like page 50 maybe?) I thought to myself, "I should just stop reading this..." and instead chose to hate read it. Thus the notes.
My notes ranged from questioning the plot, the characters actions, the characters psychic powers, the characters shifter powers...even the date of publication of the book due to the horribly dated slang and references...(DOES ANYONE EVEN REMEMBER ADAM LAMBERT?? Cause this book sure does.)
Questions/Issues I had... 1. Why are they Navy Seals? That never comes into play. Granted they were turned into shifters while serving in Afghanistan, but they could have been army, marines, air force...at no point is their background as a Navy Seal come up. Also the heroine is "lab assistant" but with NO specialization working at a world class pharmaceutical company. The author couldn't even take the time to flesh that out a TINY bit?? Like even just to mention what her overall specialization was?? It's not like she had to describe the tests the heroine did, but come on, give me something! (Also live tissue samples have to be kept cold or they die...you can't just steal them and throw them in your purse and leave them there for 24 hrs and then hand them off to a scientist, whose specialization is also unclear, for nondescript testing. This is lazy writing at its worst.
2. Why does the heroine have to refer to another women the main character sees (BEFORE the hero and heroine are together) as a skank? Why does the heroine call the idea of a woman who is sexually active a slut?
3. Why is the hero's psy powers (which he had prior to becoming a shifter) affected by taking on a mate? These things are not connected in ANY other way, so why this way? Why are the shifter's mental psy powers completely nullified by putting handcuffs on them???
4. Where did these psy powers come from? The universe this book is set in is basically ours, and the general population is not aware of the existence of the paranormal. Yet, these men how extraordinary powers that even a 9,000 year old Seelie prince says is impossible.
5. How are the shifters able to shift so damn much?? At one point they are shifting back and forth 3-4 times in the middle of a fight! Doesn't that take time and energy, and oh I don't know, slightly distract you from the people shooting at you?
6. Why is the heroine TSTL? There are several examples of this but most are spoilers...
7. Why do people allow total strangers to wander all over what is supposed to be a top secret military installation unescorted, and why are their no guards anywhere in the place? THERE AREN'T EVEN LOCKS TO KEEP YOU OUT OF "RESTRICTED" ZONES. The characters figure they are the only ones there, so why put up anything beyond a sign??? I wonder if the gov't really thinks that way...if so I should pay a visit to Fort Knox and just walk through the front door like I own the place.
8. One character kisses her against her will and just NO. That whole scene. He is trying to intimidate her, trying to push her buttons, she gets pissed, tells him to back off, then he forcibly kisses her. But instead of kneeing him in the balls as I expected her too (because she has done it to another character) she is instead "insanely curious" just goes with it. And no, the guy who forces her tongue down her throat is NOT the hero.
9. The Hero also has some super Neaderthal/rapey moments as well. At one point he even refers to women in general as "willing sheaths" when looking to get laid to try and push the heroine from his mind. He doesn't care who it is as long as it gets him off. UGGGGG.
10. There are sooooo many plot holes and inconsistencies in this book. At one point, literally in the last 20 pages of the book, the author casually mentions one of the characters have another psy power, that is NEVER mentioned before that. Why couldn't she have taken the time to go back in her draft and add that in the very beginning when she outlined his other power??
Yeah...I do not understand how this book is 1 of 10, and 3.88 stars. I just don't get it.
Can I give a book more then a 5 rating? No...hmmm...well that kind of stinks cause I want to give this one more! This book falls in my top 5 favorite shifter books ever and I read a lot of shifter books!
Fast, fun, emotional, and hot, throw in some sexy as hell shifters and a kick ass heroine and oh my...you have yourself a good time *wink*
I absolutely loved every aspect of this book. It has very intense in depth characters that will suck you in from the beginning. Jaxon is amazing. He is a tortured hero who has done everything in his power to protect the ones he loves. When a mission goes bad, he takes it very personally and he needs the love of the right women to heal his emotional hurt along with the physical. Kira...well, Kira just simply rocks. She is strong, determined, smart, and able to stand her ground in a house full of alpha power. She definitely knows how to put Jaxon on his knees. She didn't freak out when she found out about everything, nor did she turn into a whiny cry baby who needed to be coddled. NO..she stepped in and made her place in Jaxon's world and I respected her all the more for that.
I don't know about you but I feel that there has to be just the right balance of dialogue and thought to make a book flow well. Too much of either and you are either confused or bored. Not the case here, there is a lot of dialogue and banter between all the characters and just enough thought and back story for you to completely understand what is going on.
Ms. Tyler has created a world unlike any other I have read about. This book has all the things that I need in a romance novel for it to be complete. It has a strong H/H, a lot of amazing secondary characters, witty dialogue that will have you smiling, a great plot that flows well and is well thought out, and an ending that makes you crave more. Oh and did I mention this book is HOT! Oh my! The intimacy is just the right balance of heat and emotion, and will have you fanning yourself by the end.
Ok , I am gonna quit now. I could go on and on about how amazing this books is but I won't. I am gonna trust that you will follow the link below to buy the book and see for yourself. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.
This read was overdone and not thought out. Kira, a lab chick, thought something hinky was going down at her job, so she stole some lab samples. While trying to get away she was caught by some goons. She screamed. In comes the Alpha Pack who are having a weekend off in Vegas. Jax, a cripple leg human/wolf hears Kira scream and goes into wolf protective mate mode and saves her, thus inducting her into their club where she is accepted, offered a job rehabilitating broken paranormals, and sexing Jax within 48-72 hours. This authors used ploys of convenience, such as pre-cog, necromancy, and timebending to manipulate the story. A sometimes reader will find this appealing due to all the testosterone and pretty man-colors, but for a seasoned reader like me: the 'I'll accept anything as long as it's paranormal' concept is long over. Just an okay read. Not recommended~
4.5 Stars I love Ms. Tyler's new world of Alpha Pack! Exciting world of Shifters who are Primal to the bone! This book is full of hotness, suspense, action packed and at the end, I was lelft me panting for more! I highly recommend this to any readers who crave Alpha Males in thier reads!
Kira Locke, who discovers something vile about her employers, decides to steal certain documents and is on the run, but then a wolf saves her life, and kills those that would kill her. Jax, has psychic abilities and is a shifter, along with other members on his team. Ever since his team was attacked, he was crippled and his leg still brings much hindrance to him. When he ends up saving a woman in danger, he never realized that Kira would be his mate and that his primal instincts would go into overdrive. But he has no choice but to take Kira from her previous life and to their sanctuary. Kira is outraged at first to being abducted, but she realizes the logic of it. She knows there is no place she would be safe except by Jax's side. As Jax and Kira are around each others presence more and more, their bond strengthens, and their mating is close at hand. Only one thing keeping them from completing their bond....true love. Kira refuses to mate to a man that doesn't love her, she wants him to want it more than just physical desire. When danger threatens Jax and Kira, only by using every one of his abilities, will Jax be able to secure a future together....
Primal Law is the first installment of the Alpha Pack series. Now I have seen this series quite a bit but had yet until now, tried it out. When I was able to get the audio book for under $5 at Audible, I couldn't resist. I knew I needed to try this one out. Especially when I love a solid shifter romance, and this one completely sold me. It was all having sex like bunnies or anything, there was much more to the plot and I enjoyed the unique setting and how Jax and Kira met. One of the things that I really liked about Primal Law, is that is begins with a more in depth story of Kira's ex employers and what they are trying to do with anything supernatural. There is quite a bit revealed, and it was quite a thrill listening to this audiobook. The narrator was pretty talented in her inflections of the emotions and tones of the characters throughout the story.
Jax is everything you enjoy out of a domineering male, that sends shivers down your spine. He definitely has the whole alpha male pride aspect going on. He definitely is full of heat and passion, but is very tender with Kira. He is full of intense emotions and Kira handles him quite well. Kira manages learning of paranormal creatures quite well, and she adjusts to her new set of circumstances better than I even expected of her. She isn't a fighter by any means, but you see her other talents that complete her relationship with Jax quite well. I had such a fun time getting to know other members of Jax's teams, and I am just dancing on my feet in anticipation for their stories. There is a loyalty among the team, and a jovial teasing that is almost contagious, and make the reader almost envious of the close relationship between them.
Primal Law is a thrilling paranormal romance, that sets your heart at a faster pace. It is packed with a suspenseful plot, a mystery to be solved, a fierce desire that turns into a flaming love story that stirs up rich emotion and heartfelt feelings that overflow in tidal waves. STUNNING!!
Book Description: Meet the Alpha Pack, a top-secret military team of wolf-shifters fighting the most dangerous predators in the world, human and nonhuman. After a massacre leaves Jaxon Law crippled, he must relearn how to fight-and battle the anger and guilt threatening to overwhelm him. But when Jax rescues a beautiful woman who awakens his primal instincts, he is unprepared for the dangers that lie ahead. Soon he must decide if the deep connection he feels with Kira is worth defying the ultimate shifter law.
My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this story. It faintly reminded me of BDB, Psy-Changeling, Dark Hunters feel too it only they were shifters and other. I liked Jax and Kira together and separately. As tiny as Kira was, she had the heart of the warrior with a strong sense of right and wrong. But, her empathic abilities allowed her to feel for and care for others which was apparent in how well the residents of Block R responded to her. Jax *sigh*...who doesn't love a strong, protective alpha male. He was fiercely loyal to the Alpha Pack and to Kira. Jax's suffering as a result of the mating bond was honorable and sexy. He didn't want to force the bond onto Kira if she didn't want it. He wanted to give her the time she needed to love him and accept their bond *dreamy sigh*.
The pacing of the story was very well done. Characters were well thought out and developed and the plot was interesting and suspenseful. I loved the secondary characters too. Sariel, Kalen, Nick (who reminded me of Acheron from the Dark Hunters) and even little Chup made the story wonderfully detailed. I look forward to seeing what happens next for Sariel and Kalen. It broke my heart when Jax bended time and the hurt, dejected look that Aric gave him as he was captured. I was hoping that Jax could somehow pull off saving Kira and Aric. I hate Beryl...just gonna put it out there. I could feel how hateful of a character that she was even though we only got brief glimpses of her in the story. It was a shocking reveal to find out that she and Aric were related. That should be an interested story once it is unraveled.
Primal Law by J. D. Tyler is the first book in her Alpha Pack paranormal romance series.
Kira Locke knows that the scientists at the lab where she works are up to something shady, so she decides to steal some lab samples to prove it. Too bad for her that she is discovered and is forced to flee from the lab. The men guarding the lab catch up to Kira and almost kill her before Jaxon Law intervenes. Jaxon is part of Alpha Pack, a secret group of soldiers who can shapeshift and have other abilities. Jaxon and his friends take Kira to their compound, where she encounters even more strange beings. Kira finds herself attracted to Jaxon, who feels the same way, despite the fact that a past lover betrayed him and the rest of his team. The stakes get even higher when the samples that Kira stole from the lab turn out to be related to a secret project involving shifters like Jaxon and his team, but the members of Alpha Pack are determined to get to the bottom of things -- no matter how high the price might be ...
I liked the idea of Alpha Pack, and it was interesting to read about the world and headquarters that Tyler has created for her characters, along with the various creatures that she populates it with.
Kira and Jaxon are both likable enough characters, as are the other members of Alpha Pack, and there's some amusing banter in places, especially between the guys. However, I thought that Kira accepted the idea of shapeshifters and everything else that she encounters way too easily, and I thought the pack accepted and trusted her way too easily as well. Basically, Kira almost immediately becomes part of the pack's inner circle. That just didn't seem all that believable to me, since the group is supposed to be so secretive and tight-knit.
Also, I would have liked a lot more forward movement on the conspiracy plot. Kira and Jaxon figure out that someone is trying to create a breed of super-shifters, but there are definitely more questions than answers at the end of the book, which I thought was frustrating.
Overall, this book didn't work for me, but if you like paranormal romance with shapeshifters, you might want to give it a shot.
This one just had a juvenile feel to it. Our heroine, Kira, sees Jax shift to kill people in pursuit of her and then he loads her on a plane and takes her back to his home. No hesitation on her part. All the encounters with each character just felt forced and generic. For one thing, there were simply too many characters introduced at once. Because of this they all had a "card-board" character fell to them. Not a single person in this read felt genuine or realistic. I didn’t care for any of these characters, nor the plot. This won't be a series I continue.
Usually, I start my reviews with how amazing a book is...well I'll get to that soon but first...my fav quote from the book that had me laughing my laugh ass off!!
Favorite Quote:
“What are Syfy and TV?” Sariel asked in confusion. Everyone had forgotten him as he tried to follow their conversation.
“Jeez, what do they do for fun in the Seelie High Court?” she teased.
The Fae prince made a face. “Fun? Very little. My existence there was all about pomp and proper behavior. I believe humans call it ‘kissing ass.’ “
Hahahahahahahah......Every time I read this, I crack up again! Anyways, on to my review!! Here it is..
*****Some very minor spoilers, you wont even notice them*****
First of all....the cover! *sigh* Tell me, that the guy on the cover doesn’t knot your stomach in good ways??!! And considering the main character in the book....I think it’s safe to say “That is what Jaxon Law would look like!” The Alpha Pack is home to some extremely SEXY males, who leave you breathless and whom you would probably bend over and have your wicked ways with given the right moment! LOL ;p Reading just this should make you want to buy the book...if not then...read on!
So...these males were part of a group of Navy SEALS who were attacked by werewolves while on a mission and were turned, and now they play the role of jude and jury to the supernaturals in the world who wreck havoc and create misery.
Now, the thing about these shifters is that...they’re not ordinary shifters. They each have a psychic ability, some can go back in time (our boy Jax), some are pyrokinetic (Aric, Mr. Redhead), and some can see the future (say hello to Nick...leader of the sex...srry...alpha pack!). The point is....the guys are HOT, strong, funny, they can shift, and all have rockin bods with just the right amount of special powers thrown in...!! Yeah...you want to read it now???
This book was witty, funny, action packed and just plain HOT! I really don’t know what else to say!?? I mean..I could probably go on dictionary.com and find you all the synonyms of the word sexy...but that pretty much describes this book!! And truth be told...when someone says a book has it all....you have to pick it up! There’s no going around it! =)
Let’s meet our heroine...Kira. This girl is incredible! In just one day, she finds herself in the middle of an operation that's doing tests on shifters which just happens to be lead by her boss, then she steals samples from her job of these shifters, then gets caught, then gets cornered by lab goons who rough her up and then gets saved by the Alpha Pack who use that information to the benefit of their operation and discovers that..well HELL...shifters are freakin real!! *WHEW* And I have to say...she handled the situation considerably well for an innocent human..in all the sense! She didn’t know about shifters and only wanted to do the right thing but got dragged into a bigger mess than she had anticipated. So...yeah you could say I admire her! I mean..what’s not to like...she’s beautiful, has a great personality...she’s compassionate, funny and she is not only strong-willed but also strong-minded! :p
And of course, then we have Jax...well there are just no words. He's perfection. Big, alpha, possessive male. Growling and your everyday roughness included! Our hottie of the book...you kinda get a sense of his personality just by reading “alpha male”! That should be the warning sign, but poor us we jump in anyway!! LOL ;) But to be honest....he has a softer side (ahem..only when Kira or his friends are around..LOL) So, we know that these wolves mate for life and it just so happens...Jaxon recognizes Kira as his mate. It was so nice to see their relationship bloom into something that can’t just be described by saying, “Oh it was love!” It was way more than that. I can’t describe it...but it was intense, sweet, funny, crazy and an overall roller coaster ride that I wouldn’t mind taking a ride on! And throughout the entire book, you see both characters change into strong characters that you would enjoy reading about over and over again!
Overall, I really enjoyed the book and loved all the fun and unique characters! I loved the idea behind the book and just simply LOVED it! I can't wait to read more about all of the different guys, and am anxiously awaiting for their books!!. I am looking forward to reading Aric's book, especially with some information we find out at the end of Primal Law! So, yeah I wouldn’t mind the new book coming out...like yesterday....but until then...*sigh*
Quick & Dirty: Psychic Navy SEALS turned wolf shifters. Need I say more?
Opening Sentence: Jaxon Law crouched behind a Dumpster at the rear of the old brick building, wishing he’d worn gloves to protect his hands.
The Review:
Jaxon is an ex-Navy SEAL who, along with some of his fellow teammates, was attacked during a mission in Afghanistan and turned into a shifter as a result. Turns out that becoming a shifter, besides letting him take the form of a wolf, also enhanced his previous psychic gifts. The man can bend time, physically going back a few minutes into the past, and can also read a person’s past by touching them. Jaxon now belongs to team of psychically gifted shifters called the Alpha Pack.
While on a weekend off in Vegas, Jaxon interrupts an assault on a woman, instinctually shifting into his wolf form to protect her. After the fight that ensues, he and his team must perform clean up duty, which this time also involves taking on a new house guest, Kira, the very woman he saved, who also happened to witness his dramatic change from human to wolf.
Kira is an assistant at a pharmaceutical lab in Vegas. When she begins to notice some unusual activity among some of the labs doctors, she feels a need to investigate. When she finds out that there has been some genetic testing outside the realm of the legitimate. She decides to steal some notes and some samples to have examined by her friends at another lab. And now Kira is a woman on the run, though not very good at it, since she is caught in the parking lot of the building that she has just stolen from. She does make it to her car, but in a huge stroke of bad luck, it dies during her getaway. When her assailants catch up with her, and she finds she is too weak to fight them, she does what any smart woman would do, she screams, and luckily is saved rescued by our very own Jaxon.
But, this rescue comes with a bit of fine print. Because she has just witnessed an act of supernatural power, she is being required to return to the compound with the team, and be debriefed by the team’s leader. But, what seems at first like a kidnapping turns out to be quite serendipitous, because these samples are from people right up the Alpha Pack’s alley, humans bearing genetic alterations giving them animal like characteristics.
Also, as an added benefit, there is this overwhelming attraction to her knight in silver fur, and his apparent attraction to her. Phew…this one is a hot one. All sweaty limbs and steamy goodness, fated love and destiny fulfilled.
Ok, so back to the action, not that there wasn’t any of that action. So, it turns out that Kira’s former employer is into some bad business, and is also involved in some past stuff that went on with Jaxon’s old teammate’s, and the betrayal by one of his former lovers, who makes yet another appearance at the tail end of the novel.
There is just so much going on in this story, it is impossible to cover it all in one sitting. An interesting premise, intriguing characters, an evil bad girl whose face you just want to punch in, and at the end, a hint of a conspiracy so heinous it will curl your toes. An exciting beginning to a series I have every intention of keeping up with.
Notable Scene:
Jax ran, his limp slowing him down. But the copter was lifting. Kira tried to get to Bowman, who sat on the other side of Beryl. Desperate, Jax shifted to human form and yelled over the noise. “Kira, jump!”
Turning, she saw her opportunity to escape slipping away. Making the decision to let them go, fight another day, she shifted to human form and braced herself in the doorway.
“Jump!” he yelled again. The copter was pulling away, a gap forming between it and the roof.
Kira tensed to make the leap—just as Beryl grabbed her from behind, holding her back. The gap between the building and the copter widened even more. There was no way Kira could make the jump now. Then Beryl raised a booted foot and kicked her hard, between the shoulder blades. Jax could only watch in horror as his mate lost her grip.
“Kira!”
She was flung from the helicopter.
Eyes wide with terror, reaching for the lip on the edge of the building.
And missing.
Her scream pierced the night. Shattered his heart.
Then silence.

FTC Advisory: Penguin/Signet provided me with a copy of Primal Law. No goody bags, sponsorships, “material connections,” or bribes were exchanged for my review.
I started this series with book five, Cole's Redemption, and enjoyed it so much I've started over at the beginning with this book.
Shifters books always appeal to me and so do military books which makes this one a total win. Navy seals that were bitten while deployed in Afghanistan. Mix their new shifter abilities with the psy ones they already had and you have the go to group for dealing with the paranormal. It's an interesting world that I quickly loved.
The story is spiraling as it ends up where it started and expands from there. It had me thinking, trying to figure out what was going on and how everything fit together. I enjoy those kinds of books a lot. Mixed in with the mystery of what is really going on is the bonding issue that needs to be settled between Jaxon and Kira. The author does a good job of weaving both pieces together.
I liked both main characters. Jaxon is a tough guy that's been through a lot. He struggles with an injury and questions his ability to still be part of the team. He has no desire for a mate and tries his hardest to not be drawn to Kira but the draw is there and he can't resist it. The idea of mates and that pull between them always makes me happy. I enjoy them resisting and then figuring out that the other one makes them the happiest they can be. Just makes me smile. As for Kira, she's a daring, strong women who takes risks for things she believes in. Her questions about her employer led her to some important finding. I was pretty proud of her stubborn tenacity.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story. It filled in the overarching story line for me after jumping into this one mid-series. I'm definitely reading on with this series.
Kira barely made it out of her previous employment with the lab samples before getting shot by security. Now they have her cornered in the parking garage and she knows that this will mean her death. They can’t risk their secret getting out, the secret Kira was willing to risk her life for. But just before she’s murdered a freaking wolf appears out of nowhere to kill her attackers. Then, if that wasn’t shocking enough, that same wolf morphs into a handsome man. Turns out he’s a part of a secret military task force and he’s offering her his protection.
Jax is a wolf shifter having been infected with the change while on duty for the military a few years back. Now he and his pack contain the paranormal species of the world who are a threat to the human population. When he smells the female in trouble, he can’t stop himself from saving her and in the process, revealing himself as a shifter. Now she needs to come with him to the compound for safe keeping as well as to keep their secret safe.
He never expected the woman to turn out to be his mate but just as he thinks they have found true happiness, fate is being a bitch and may put a end to that.
I’ll keep this short and sweet. Dull characters. Even duller plotline. Just a massive disappointment from start to finish. This book can easily be a part of what seems like a million other military secret shifter series. It’s completely unimaginative and copies so many other books by different authors without adding anything what so ever to make it unique or rememberable in any way.
Was going to give it a 3 1/2 stars but the ending brought it down to 2 1/2 stars, both for the cliffhanger, not for the main characters but for the storyline which didn't get very far at all. Just a beginning. Knowing there is government traitor but nothing more.
Along with the poor ending, the story is good but not great. There was some sort of chemistry of characters missing, like all of them were only drawn... superficially. I never trusted any of them and kept waiting for anyone but the main character to be the traitor. The only character I kind of trusted was the fae character.
It was OK and good enough that I might see if it improves on the second book. If the characters are as flat in the second book, I will quit altogether.
