It's time for bed, but the little Mouse Baby has no intentions of calling it a night. He hides in the garden, hides in the kitchen, hides his little whiskers anywhere he can. Anything to keep from going to bed. But daddy is right behind him --"Mousebaby mousebaby, where can you be?"-- trying to get this little scamp all tucked in and ready to sleep.. Who will win at this adorable game of hide and squeak? Only time will tail...tell.
Daddy Mouse chases Mouse Baby around the garden and through the house trying to get him to head to bed. Mouse Baby hides in the kitchen, in the bathroom, and the living room with his father right behind. Until finally, Daddy manages to grab his tail just before he runs off to a new hiding place. The pace of the fast-moving book changes to a slow bedtime story as Mouse Baby is tucked into his matchbox bed. This is an adorable bedtime story with just enough running and romping to keep it lively and fun.
Frederick’s writing incorporates repetition and rhyme. Daddy Mouse has a rhyme he says again and again in the book, making this a great choice for small children:
Mouse baby, mouse baby, where can you be? I can’t see you. Can you see me? It’s time for bed. It’s time for sleep. No more time for hide-and-squeak.
The tone of the entire book is playful with the added fun of a chase and hide and seek. Payne’s illustrations have a nice timeless feel to them that adds warmth to the book. They also have the added charm of coming from a mouse-high perspective that children will enjoy. The relationship of father and child is highlighted in both the illustrations and the text.
A great bedtime pick, this book just may become a favorite night time read for your family. Appropriate for ages 2-4.
Well, I really wanted to like this book more than I did. With Hide and Squeak though, I just felt like it was trying too hard or something. I like the bedtime story twist, and I love the interactions of the baby mouse and the daddy. The text is written with great voice and the rhyme is nice, I just didn't feel that this book was a homerun.
Little Squeak is not ready for bed and proceeds to play chase with his daddy and hide. Their chase ends in goodnight hugs and kisses, but just lacked the luster of other great bedtime tales.
Baby Mouse leads Daddy Mouse all over the place as they prepare for bed, running and hiding behind a tree, in the garden, up the curtains until finally, he settles in for a good night's sleep. The patience of the father and the mischieviousness of his offspring are revealed through the rhyming text and pen and ink, acrylic and colored pencil illustrations. The patience of parenthood shines through every page. This one will be great fun to read aloud to children who will surely relate to the merry mouse chase of this furry baby.
Hide and Squeak is a warm and super cute tale about a baby mouse trying to scurry and scamper away from his Dad and bedtime.
Who hasn’t tried to wiggle out of going to bed? With repeating calls and sounds, this could be the cutest telling of the chase and hunt on record. I am not a big “awww-isn’t-he-cute” type gal, but this mouse is adorable!
Readers won’t be able to hide their smiles after Mouse Baby cannonballs into the bath tub! :)
Darling bedtime book! Baby Mouse isn't quite ready to settle down for the night and sends Daddy Mouse on a wild hide-and-squeak game all over the house. Only time will tail...tell...if Daddy can catch Baby! Large, expressive illustrations and the rhythmic pattern of the text makes it a fun, sing-song story that will be perfect to get the little ones snuggled in!
Kids will enjoy seeing Baby Mouse enact the sort of bedtime escape they can empathize with. The rhyme flows beautifully and the pictures are fun, with mice that look reminiscent of Garth Williams illustrations.
Baby Mouse and Daddy Mouse are playing hide and seek before bed. Baby Mouse keeps running from dad, climbing over everything and going everywhere! Daddy finally catches Baby by his tail, and gives him a big hug and a kiss. He tucks him into bed for the night. I thought this book was very sweet. I feel like I haven't seen many books about a father and son, where they are showing emotion in a gushy way. I of course support this one hundred percent. Boys need to know that it's okay to be mushy and show emotion! It is a natural and good thing to do. I also really enjoyed the rhyming and repetition in this book. That would be a great resource in the classroom when working on student reading and writing fluency. The text interacts with the illustrations, bending and twisting along Baby Mouse's path. The sound of the clock is emphasized with the large footed "TICK TOCK" mid-book! There weren't really any important social issues being addressed in this book. But it did contain some fun and important themes that could be useful in and out of the classroom.
I like the story Hide and Squeak, I would give it a 4. A dad is trying to get his little one in bed. He chases his son around the house, through the garden, behind three, and under the curtains. The son is not ready to go to sleep, at least not without a game of hide and seek! When dad catches up to the mouse baby, they show their love with a hug and a kiss then he is tucked under the blanks like a bug in a rug. This story shows the patience and love of a parent for their little ones. When a younger student is missing their parents, that is when they can turn to this book for comfort. It is an example of the parent's love for the son. I could also use this book to introduce fantasy fiction books because the aminals have human qualities.
Even though it's time for bed, adorable little Mouse Baby doesn't want to go to sleep. Imagine!
Could this be a horror story? A mystery?
Okay, hardly. "Hide-and-Squeak" is part of the vast literature on child stalling. Hiding from parent may not be original, but it can buy the child some stalling time.
This book is cute. Heather Votel Frederick has told her story adventurously, and illustrations by C. F. Payne are outstanding.
Little Mouse is being chased by his daddy. Daddy needs to catch Little Mouse to put him to bed, but Little Mouse keeps running all around and wants to play hide-and-squeak.
The story is adorable, but the illustrations of the mice are amazing. The illustrator absolutely captures the emotion on the little mouse...the joy, happiness and delight literally made me smile.
It’s bedtime but little mouse would rather play “hide and squeak”! Gentle rhyming story for bedtime for little ones, and parents alike who will be able to relate to bedtime antics. There’s something about the illustrations that I don’t love. The mice are skinny? Not overly cutesy? I can’t quite put my finger on it I guess.
Repetitive, rhyming text shows Daddy mouse playing hide and seek with baby mouse. (It seems like it's always Daddy who plays this game in picture books). Sweet story with steps leading up to bedtime.
In this rhyming bedtime picture book, a daddy mouse is trying to get his little one off to sleep - "It's time for bed. It's time for sleep. No more time for hide and squeak." But of course, the little one is running and hiding all over the place! Great book for bedtime for toddlers.
I loved reading this book because it had such a cute rhyme to it. I think this would be such a fun book to read to younger children. I loved the illustrations and thought they went perfectly for each page and what the story was all about. Such a fun read!
Ooooh...I just loved this book! With its Karma Wilson-esque bouncy rhyming narrative and adorable illustrations, this was such a fun book to read aloud. The narrative has a big font and is short enough to hold the attention of even the youngest toddler. And the thoughtful expressions on Daddy mouse and the mischievous grin on baby mouse are terrific. I have loved C.F. Payne's illustrations from the back covers of the Reader's Digest, but I think he's really got a hit here. This book gets a rare 5-star rating from me. We've borrowed this one a couple of times.
It's time for bed, but the mouse baby isn't done playing yet. With Daddy finding and baby mouse hiding, they have quite an adventure before bedtime.
What I thought: Cute! The repetitive text will appeal to children. The story is sweet and I love the illustrations. They're so colorful and filled with action (as is the story). Daddy Mouse's glasses are great. My favorite illustrations are mouse baby in the tub and daddy tucking baby in (My mom used to tuck us in and say "snug as a bug in a rug"). I look forward to using Hide & Squeak at story time.
Really cute pictures. The text was ok. Fun to see the dad search for his son. Just not sure it's what I'm used to using in preschool storytime. Worth a try....
9/21/16 & 9/22/16 Used as opener in toddler Mouse theme. It held enough attention. There just wasn't much more I could do with it to get the kids involved. I'm still on a learning curve with this group, and I was never fully behind the book as a read aloud. But it was nice to have this book with the couple of dads who bring their kids to storytime.
It seems I ended up with quite a few mouse-themed books in this group. I rather enjoyed this one. Father mouse is pursuing his wayward child trying to rescue him from certain peril. There's a loving, joyful relationship between the two characters. Wonderful read for parents who might have a hard time getting kids to settle down and go to bed at night.
Another title that I'm looking forward to sharing in my bedtime stories storytime...a mouse runs from his daddy as it's time for bed, playing hide and "squeak". Dad is able to get him corraled and into bed to sleep. Sweet illustrations, gentle rhyming story and I'm confident this will translate swell as a readaloud.
It's time to go to bed and the mouse baby is still out and about. His dad goes searching for him and chases him around. He never gets angry as the mouse baby hops from one place to the other, hiding an d squeaking. Finally, his dad grabs him by the tail, gives him a big hug and a kiss and then tucks the mouse baby in bed. A playful story that is fun to read because of the rhymes.
It's bedtime and Mouse daddy chases Mouse baby through the garden and the house. Told in rhyme, it's a cute little book to read at bedtime, although I didn't like the page where Daddy catches Baby by the tail (don't we tell kids not to pull a dog's or a cat's tail?). The illustrations show the love between a father and child.
Sweet rhyming book with equally appealing illustrations. Text is short enough for toddler stoytime and rhymes are fun, not forced. Baby mouse leads his dad on a game of hide-and-squeak around the garden and the house at bedtime. Children will have fun looking for mouse baby, and the chase ends with a satisfying hug. A great follow-up/companion to Good Night Moon.
Little mouse should be going to bed; instead, he leads his father in a game of "hide and squeak."Father mouse eventually grabs mouse by the tail and swings him in or a great big hig and kiss before tucking his little one into bed. This is one of my favorites to read at story time. Simple, large illustrations and I love that it's a dad with his little one, very sweet story!
Fun to read aloud - will use with family storytime and have the parents chime in/repeat the refrain "No More Time for Hide and Squeak!" Charming illustrations and I like that the parent mouse is Daddy :)
Pro- Cute depiction of a father relationship, nice use of the game hide and seek as a frame
Con - a little long for my taste, not much of a arc to the story ( they run and play until they stop), and I'm a little weirded out by the dad pulling his tail to catch him.
This is a funny book about a child mouse not wanting to go to bed, so his dad chases him around the house and garden to try to get him to bed. There are simple rhymes in the book, which makes it easy for younger readers.
It's bedtime but Little Mouse doesn't want to go. As he runs around playing Hide and Squeak, Daddy chases him. The illustrations are the star of this story - absolutely adorable! The story is just okay, I'm not a fan of books that teach kids to misbehave and this one walks that line very closely.
