My third Austen novel, and close to my favourite, though it was only slightly pipped at the post by Emma. It was slightly denser, and a less smooth read, and a little too focused on class structure and social mores for my personal tastes. Anne Elliot is, however, by far my favourite Austen heroine of the three so far, and I found myself laughing at her being stuck being everyone's sounding board - Austen's wit & snark were in fine form in this book. I was also giggling at her calling someone a d ...more

This was Austen’s last novel, and one would think it would be the ultimate work of a mature author who had honed her craft. But it isn’t. It’s not Austen’s fault. She grew quite ill and was not able to finish it.

There are still many of the elements of a treasured Austen classic here. She is able to turn a critical eye on the social mores of the time and expose the frustration and angst of the young women who were captives of their class and station in life. But the sparkling dialogue of her earl

A re-read of an old favourite. A re-read always, for me, is accompanied by nostalgia… of that first encounter. How I struggled (I was, then, at least a decade younger than Anne Elliot and now I’m a decade older) and how I triumphed (the school librarian too as it was her recommendation). It was still slow at the beginning though I don’t find it as much as a struggle as my first read and that’s because I know the ending and how it all is worth it. I enjoyed the more mature character, Anne Elliot ...more

So far this is my favorite Jane Austen. It was easier for me to read and follow than the ones I have read thus far and the story line kept me interested the whole way through. It didn't hurt that it ended the way I wanted it to. :) ...more

I enjoyed this book. I really liked Anne compared to Austen's other protagonists. She is older, more sensible and keeps a level head. It's a story of lost love and second chances. ...more

This was the first Austen novel I read.... and did not expect to be a fan....and the beginning did not impress me. But I began to appreciate the finely woven, yet simple, story. Then...somewhat disappointed with the ending...everything gets wrapped up so quickly...and we never get to see Mr. Elliot squirm. Too much of a fairy tale ending.
