I think I read this, or part of it, when I was about ten, but as I remember nothing I suspect I didn't get very far. It wasn't what I expected at all, more of a farce than a travelogue, and I'm guessing it would pass the test for an accurate portrayal of a specific time and place (and vernacular) in American history.

I read this in high school but the only things that I had any memory of were the existence of a raft and a black guy who was referred to with a controversial term so it was like reading it for the first time. I thought it was better than The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, which I also read recently (for the first time). It was more grown-up, exploring things like the conflict between society's morals and what you think is best. Tom Sawyer still had a stint in this book with his manufactured adventure
