What Members Thought

Before reading this novel, I would have said I disliked Hardy. My previous experiences of his work as a teenager ranged from the tedious to the ludicrous, with the result that I cast him aside for 35 years or so. However, I have to say I really enjoyed The Return of the Native. The characters have more depth than I expected , the story is an engaging one, and the presence of the beautiful but menacing Egdon Heath is skilfully and sympathetically woven into the story.

Thomas Hardy knew the stuff which made good soap operas by modern standards: lots of intrigue, plenty of folks who just can't manage to keep it in their pants, a bundle of miscommunications and a setting as familiar as its own character on which all of the above to occur.
