In fairness, 3.5 stars, but still quite fun and a good distraction. Great for sci-fi/ fantasy readers and excellent for a long plane ride or spring break entertainment. I'll be reading the sequel...

This was just okay for me. I was excited by the concept of the 3 parallel Londons but when the story played out as "we must take this magical object to a dangerous place in order to save the world as we know it" it left me cold. I felt the well drawn fantasy world depicted was wasted on this tired plot. On the positive side, I thought the writing was very good and I liked the three protagonists; Lila, Kell and Rhy. I really, truly wanted to like this. I almost DNF'ed but was urged to carry on. It was interesting but didn't mesmerize me. I don't think I'm going to continue on the series.

3.5 stars — Hmm. This should have been a 4 or 5 star book for me. Schwab's prose is excellent and I love reading about magic and parallel worlds. I really wanted to like Delilah; she is a survivor, capable and scrappy, but I found it too easy for me to put this book down and too hard for me to make myself care about the characters and their fight. The world and magic system is fascinating enough that I'll see if book 2 can hold my interest.

Parallel Londons filled with magic? Yes, please! I enjoyed the characters and setting in A Darker Shade of Magic, though I find I've already forgotten how it all ended...This is quite possibly due to the fact I listened to the audiobook, and those tend to stick with me less. The pickpocket pirate girl (Lila?) is exceptionally likeable, and I hope we see lots more of her in future books.
