I really struggled with this book. I thought the beginning was pretty good, but then went downhill fast. Some of the author's writing was lovely, but overall, a lot of detail that in my opinion did nothing for the characters or the story. Glad it is over.

Ho hum. Jane Hamilton is a lovely writer and I throughly enjoyed an interview I heard with her on NPR about apples...BUT, this book was a serious let down. The moral of the story as I read it is: keep your house neat and tidy or your entire life will spin out of control.
I've had this book on my shelf for years but never got around to reading it. Just decided to give it a shot and really enjoyed it, although the story is kind of a downer. I thought the characters were well-drawn, interesting, and complicated. Maybe I'll see the movie now....
