To call this book effed up is an understatement. The drama that comes from living in a small town, particularly one where there's a huge dichotomy between the very rich and the very poor, breeds discontent of all kinds here. I had read some reviews here on Goodreads, and someone partially spoiled it for me (it was a misleading spoiler), but I sort of had an inkling what was going to happen from about the midway point. I'm not sure what kind of commentary this book is making, though, because it s

At first, I found the writing style to be cheesey and affected, like it was trying too hard to be one of those old school noir films, but it didn't take me too long to get very sucked in. Although there were a lot of things about the story I did not enjoy - particularly the main character's self-destructive and dark attitude towards sex - I gave this story 4 stars because I wound up staying up WAY too late as I simply could not go to bed without knowing the truth about the murders. this book was disturbing, in a very excellent way (i think). it's not really a "trashy" thriller - it's more complex than that, but it's also. . . not very realistic. even though i had figured out who had done it early on - i didn't REALLY figure it out - the last three pages have a little twist that give this book four stars.

I really wanted this book to be as captivating and as gripping as Gone Girl....but it just wasn't. While I did find the main character, Camille and her backstory, to be intriguing, she was really the only character that held my interest. I found the character, Amma, her half sister, to be especially problematic. One minute Amma is portrayed as a very sexualized and cruel teen (in a way that just doesn't read as believable for a 13 year old) and the next minute she's obsessively playing with a do

I have conflicting feelings about this one, but overall it was a good read. Gillian Flynn has a really crazy imagination - her stories are full of so much pain, ugliness, and insanity. But she also imbues her characters with humanity that makes you want things to be better for them, even if they don't want it for themselves. I read her books in reverse order of publication, which is probably a good thing because this one is so much darker and creepier than the others - I might not have wanted to

Weird! That's all I have to say.
