I read this book because I came across it at the library the day after Krystl had told me she really liked the anime. I was glad I did, because I quickly discovered that this is fantasy of the best sort. It has fun taking traditional fairy tale conventions and turning them on their head, particularly the "youngest child receives the best fortune" convention. This would make a great read aloud for older kids. Quirky and fanciful and surprisingly intricate. It's worth a slow, careful read. Perceptions and assumptions veil the truth. Self-doubt and a curse turn the young protagonist into an old woman, but this transformation actually liberates her to go out and seek her fortune. The evil wizard just might be the hero of the tale....
