an oddly liminal book: somewhere in-between novel and graphic novel, somewhere in-between YA and middle grade, somewhere in-between me liking it and me being indifferent towards it.

as a designed physical object, it’s impressive. it’s solid and heavy and fits nicely in the hand, the cover is subtly embossed and the cover image is seductively spooky. all good things. it’s also a breeze of a read, as half of the story is sequential art and the other half is diary entries. oddly enough, the portion

I am so happy someone posted about this book over on Instagram, because it is such a great creepy little story. It's actually two stories that merge at the end. The first, the story of Ella moving into a new house with a view of the old Thornhill Institute, is told through illustrations, while the other takes place in 1982 and is told through the diary entries of Mary. Mary tells of living in the Thornhill orphanage, where another girl has just returned, a girl Mary is very afraid of. Mary doesn ...more

I picked this up "to read for 15 minutes before bed." Couldn't put it down and finished it in one sitting.

This is a wrenching tale, beautifully told. There are two interwoven tales - one is the story of a silent girl, told in her own words. The other is the silent tale of another girl, told entirely through drawings. It's ultimately a story about desperate loneliness and grief. Does it have a happy ending or a tragic one? I'm not sure.

I know I was immediately invested in Mary's diary entries cat

Liked it for the most part. Somewhat disturbing and unsettling ending. Not sure what age group I would recommend this to.

Totally compelling in a scary way. The story is told with words and illustrations so well. The only thing that keeps me from saying five stars is that I imagine it looses its power once you know the secret. (I only give five stars to possible desert island books and I don’t think this would hold up if it was the one book to sustain me for the rest of my life)

DARK. Dark dark dark. It looked a little like a kids book, but newp, this is YA. The bullying in this book is harsh, and there's a lot of darkness here. It was really good; I enjoyed the story told in art in between the text chapters. A very good, very sad, very angry book. ...more
