Second reading. I won't rate this again. My memory of the first reading decades ago will have to remain intact. I liked it very much at the time although I found it unsatisfactory for reasons which escape me at this point. It wasn't until The Owl Service and then the dizzying heights of Red Shift that Garner became a favourite writer. There's a good book in Weirdstone trying to get out but while Garner had found his subject matter he hadn't yet found his voice. Some of the narrative sections are

I have mixed feelings, partly because I am an adult reading a book that I would have loved when I was twelve. Garner does a great job in depicting an everyday setting that has become terrifying and strange, and some of the scenes are truly disturbing. The depiction of the children crawling through ever narrowing tunnels deep underground is nightmare territory.

I was so sure I would love this book. I somehow missed it in childhood reading, though I'm pretty sure I watched the Owl Service as a TV series and I'm sure I had Alan Garner books on the family shelves.
I bought this to read with my ten year old son. It took months (I've just seen the date! FIVE months!), because there was never that sense of urgently wanting to get to bed and read another chapter.
