What Members Thought

When Lillian was a teenager she was expelled from school because she stepped in for her roomie and took the rap for the cocaine found in their room. Now fifteen years later she is working for her former roommate in Tennessee, as governess for twins who have a tendency to spontaneously combust when upset. They burst into flames. Haven't you heard of this happening, most stories brushed aside with some sort of reasonable explanation? The kids here, though, really do it, sometimes multiple times a

Funny, clever, sweet, snarky, this is exactly what I needed during COVID summer. This was an odd book. I liked the unpredictability and the sarcastic wit of it but I felt emotionally removed from it. I liked it but it had the potential to be much better than it was. It was certainly an interesting combination of realism and the fantastical.

I've seen this all over on book lists and never selected it. It was the most interesting of the audiobooks available so I commutes with it. If I'm not being clear, I didn't think I would like this and I didn't even know what it was about.
But after judging the book by its cover, I really did enjoy it! It's just a fun story. ...more
